My husband and I are senior citizens, and we just finished reading Larry Tyler and the Planet Buksdahuda prior to sending it on to younger family members. We thoroughly enjoyed it. What a delightful yarn it is, and educational as well: It incorporates technical electronics information, and also illustrates the values of leadership, teamwork, responsibility, learning of skills, concern for others, love of famly, among others. This book is totally appropriate for young people of all ages, and we highly recommend it.

A Terrific Kinder Literacy Resource!

Review Date: 2007-06-02
This teaching resource is definitely a keeper! My kinders loved making their own alphabet books. I copied the letters onto tagboard. Then, the kinders completed their letter art projects. Next, I cut the letters out and glued them to another piece of tagboard. Underneath the letter, the students completed a fill in the blank statement about each of the letters related to the art projects they completed. Finally, all of the letters were bound into a book. Wow! The kinders loved reading and sharing their books over and over with each other! This resource was a wonderful reading, writing, and tactile experience all in one! It's important to note that there's flexibility if you want to change what each letter stands for when you complete the art projects and there are additional teaching tips for each letter too!

As a childcare provider I love this book it is a creative way to learn the alphabet a great resources if you make up your own curriculum. You may photo copy it for many years of use instead of purchasing a boxed curriculum every month for a certain number of children. Parent's are always interested to see what their children have learned. With each letter of the alphabet it is always different and interesting. But most important children have fun as they learn.

I used this book with my 2004-2005 Pre-K class. It's very easy to incorporate the lessons into your daily/weekly calendar. My students particularly enjoyed the letter bag game (put mystery items into a pillowcase that begin with the letter you are teaching. Pass it around and have the children grab out 1 item and try to guess what it is). I incorporated it into show-n-tell Fridays. IE: Bring in something that starts with letter B. I would put those show n tell items into the letter bag & the kids loved seeing their item pulled out of the letter bag by other children.
Be sure you collect the work pages in an organized fashion because at the end of the year, you'll find yourself overwhelmed! I'd recommend creating the books as you go rather than at the end of the school year. I used pipe-cleaner to bind my books and it worked quite well.

A wonderful story with a great message for children. Lydia, a little ladybug, goes in search of someone who can perform magic to make her more "appealing" in others' eyes, but in the end discovers that the true magic lies within herself to create her own happiness and make her dreams come true.
This charming little heroine also teaches children the value of believing in one self, (even if others doubt you) and in living life with a positive mental attitude.
I also liked the sense of connection that is weaved throughout the story in Lydia realizing the importance of other living beings that she comes into contact with, and showing concern for the world around us.

I bought this book as a Christmas present for my niece - I have always liked ladybugs and was convinced by the positive reviews I saw on Amazon. Upon receiving the book, I was definitely not disappointed! The story was enlightening and funny, as well as meaningful. It shows children that they can succeed despite obstacles, or other's disapproval, and fulfill their dreams when they remain true to their ideals. A really charming book! In a society that discourages individuality, this book underscores the concept that individual differences don't have to be a negative, they can be a positive in achieving one's goals. It clearly illustrates that it is okay to be different, and often times essential in fulfillment of one's true destiny.
I also think the book can enrich a child's vocabulary - there are a lot of excellent words used and a small dictionary in the back. A history lesson is woven throughout the book as well.

This is a story you will read to your children or grandchildren again and again because the timeless message it conveys applies to every stage of development. Due to the subtle rhyme pattern, before you know it the little ones will be ending the sentences as you are reading to them.
When it becomes time to read it themselves, they will remember Lydia is not an ordinary lady bug and she will have taken on a life if her own in your child's imagination.
As a teacher, it is my experience that one of the hardest things for kids to live with is their differences--in size, looks, family, skills, talents--and one of their most urgent needs is to fit in with their peers. Lydia teaches them that the feeling of belonging comes from inside and from a choice to give and share of ourselves.
Together with the friends she makes on her journey, Lydia drives home the values of courage, determination, kindness, vision, hope, generosity, can-do mindset, friendship and joyful celebration of life.
There is also a subtle message of reverence for nature and our planet, and the importance of taking care of each other as well as of our natural environment if we want to find fulfillment and peace of mind.
Lydia's story is an illustration of one of Antoine de St-Exupéry's (author of Le Petit Prince, a French children's classic that is just as much for adults) most famous quotes: "On ne voit bien qu'avec le coeur. L'essential est invisible pour les yeux." Translation: One can only see well with the heart. The essential is invisible to the eyes.

What a delightful and benevolent story! The combination of humorous rhymes and charming illustrations had me smiling from beginning to end. The theme of this story, at least as I see it, is the power of optimism. The message is that an affirmative response to life can help lift us to the height where dreams are beckoning. Reading this book is a happy experience and I recommend it to everyone who wants to help young children build self-esteem.

Remember when Harry Kemelman's Rabbi Small tales were about all there was of Jewish crime fiction? No longer, as editor Lawrence W. Raphael makes clear in "Mystery Midrash: An Anthology of Jewish Mystery and Detective Fiction." Some familiar wordsmiths and characters are to be found in these pages, from Stuart M. Kaminsky (whose Chicago detective, Abe Lieberman, here takes a confession from a lapsed and irate Jew) to Ronald Levitsky (contributing a story in which civil-liberties lawyer Nate Rosen faces a truly unique First Amendment case) and Howard Engel (providing P.I. Benny Cooperman with a light-hearted locked-room puzzle). Although Raphael's selections often deal with Jewish issues, fans of this book will likely stretch across the religious spectrum. ...

A Yiddishe Kop, I know... but a Yiddishe Cop? Will dvar mysteries replace dvar torahs on Shabbat morn? Will parents stop hoping their child will be a doctor or a lawyer, and hope for a Jewish cop or detective? What is midrash? Isn't it a deep investigation of the text in order to learn more about it, and piece things together, to compare various texts and clues? Isn't that what a P.I. (Private Investigator) does, too? In this book are original stories by notable mystery writers. Batya contributes "Kaddish", a mystery about a secular Jew who must console a dead rabbi's family by helping them focus on the rabbi's goodness and not the alleged, scandalous events surrounding his death. In "Bread of Affliction" by Michael Kahn (author of the Rachel Gold series, Sheer Gall, Grave Designs), Chicago Attorney Rachel Gold must use her knowledge of Pesach to solve a mystery surrounding a contested will. Richard Fliegel, creator of the Jewish detective, Shelly Lowenkopf ("A Minyan for the Dead"), writes in "A Final Midrash" about four rabbi's who help a detective solve a murder that one of them has committed. If I had a sack of cash, I would certainly option the film rights for "A Final Midrash"! For not only is it an interesting short mystery, but it is a well crafted allusion to the 3 rabbis who entered Pardes with Rabbi Akiva, as well as the four ways to create a drash, namely Pshat, Sot, Drash, and Mysticism. Other contributors include: Toni Brill, Howard Engel, Stuart Kaminsky, Faye Kellerman, Ronald Levitsky, Ellen Rawlings, Shelly Singer, Bob Sloan, Janice Steinberg, and James Yaffe. I was not used to reading mysteries prior to reading this book, but I think this anthology has sparked that "Pintelye Mystery".

Lawrence Raphael has edited a collection of short stories that allowed me to do two of my favorite things at the same time: reading mysteries and reading about Jews. The collection is a great delight. It combines the comfort of familiarity with the intrigue of the mysterious. The stories span the spectrum of the religious to the assimilated; there's something for everyone. I'm looking forward to Volume II.

Clever, funny, humane, with a nod at the dark side of the human mind, Mystery Midrash is just what it says: the exploration and development of a common theme, in this case, the mystery short story. As with all midrash, each different take on a story tells us something new; as with all good midrash, that something new returns us to the innate unchangability of the human dilemma, and to humankind's steady relationship with the forces of order in a world of chaos.
Even readers who are not sure why a cheeseburger is a moral decision for a Jew will love this feast.

I can verify that the bacteria is there and can tell you that if you stimulate that part of the brain, like dust and debris, the bacteria will come off! I can't make claims about what will happen for others, I just know that I have been able to clear it out of those who have gone before. Time for my own research. If Lawrence Broxmeyer is right about his theories on the possible causes of Parkinson's disease then a cure could follow. Who is looking further into his theories? It's scary to realize that a lot of possible causes to many diseases are dismissed and possibly controlled by the multi-million dollar pharmaceuticals that only look for what they want to find. Michael J. Fox needs to see this. Maybe his clout could initiate some action. My brother has Parkinson's and I can't stand watching him deteriorate, all possible causes and cures need to be pursued.

I prefer Bartlett's for one major reason: You know where what you're looking for came from. There's plenty of good material in here, don't get me wrong, but if it's a Shakespeare quotation, I like to know *exactly* where it came from in MacBeth, so I can find it and cite it!
It does have an interesting organization-- by theme-- which is different from Bartlett's and can make flipping through it amusing. In that way, you can actually pick this up and just browse instead of reading 16 pages of lines from Paradise Lost, all together.
However, if you're looking for something practical, something you can use to give people an answer if they ask you, "Hey, that was interesting, where did it come from, exactly?," you're not going to be able to answer the "exactly" part. Just be aware of that.

A lot of quote books focus on the timeless and famous or the "witty" and not-so-meaningful. Peter's Quotations is a clasic among public speakers and essayists because it focusses on what these people are likely to need. It addresses broad, abstract topics such as "kindness" but also lays out the lawyer jokes. The topics are a good mix of the immortal and the current and, while often witty, are never ridiculous or campy (well, almost never campy). I've used it for years as a debater and public speaker, as a coach, and as a teacher. The best indication I can give you of its outstanding usefulness is that I buy a new copy for my speech team every year because a graduating senior always steals the old one. I'm on my third personal copy because I've worn two others out.

Not a "real" quotation reference like, say, Bartlett's, but a great compendium of mostly modern quotes. The book has a sharp, sassy, punchy, pointed sensibility (which only lags, unfortunately, in Dr. Peter's own added asides which are uniformly below the standard of the rest of the book). This is a quotation book that you will read cover to cover. Organization is handy so that when you want to find that pithy bon mot that struck you the last time you read the book, you'll be able to locate it easily. Highly recommended.

I got this and some other books to get my son ready for HS Honors Chemistry over the Summer. It is just the right level. The many detailed worked examples are clear and there are lots of extra problems to practice on. I looked at quite a few others including Schaum's more general "General Chemistry" and this was the best.

Over the passed few months, I have been buying a lot of chemistry help books to help me survive college chemistry. I have bought the more popular ones like Chemistry for Dummies and the Complete Idiot's Guide to Chemistry. Both of these books are ok, but the part that they really lack is that they didn't adequately help me in the math of chemistry. In fact, it's actually kind of misleading to read these books, and then take a chemistry class. Because these books brush over the math of chemistry so much that I was led to believe that chemistry didn't have that much math in it. But nothing could be further from the truth! When I took my first chemistry class, I felt like I had more math than I did in my actual math class. And, unfortunately, both Chemistry for Dummies and the Complete Idiot's Guide to Chemistry didn't help out too much in this area (and to make matters worse, the FEW examples of math based chemistry problems they had were ridiculously easy.)
I was fed up. I had spent money on two chemistry books that were near worthless as far as helping me out with the math. And when it came to chemistry 102, Chemistry for Dummies might as well have been cast into a fire.. as it doesn't seem to cover much of anything passed chemistry 101 (just look up "enthalpy" in the index... it doesn't even merit a mention in Chemistry for Dummies!). After I told my professor about my problem, he showed me Schaum's Outlines for College Chemistry. I thought, "Oh great, another worthless chemistry book." But then when I flipped through it, it was like a dream come true. Not only does it cover just about every single topic from chemistry 101 AND 102, it also has page after page after page of examples of math based chemistry problems, and it breaks the problems down so that I could teach myself how to work the math problems.
And incase anyone is wondering, yes it does explain the main topics in chemistry. So it's not just a straight math book. The explanations are a little dry compared to Chemistry for Dummies and the Idiot's Guide to Chemistry, but this book is so infinitely awesome in every other way, that this is easily forgivable (besides, the Dummies and Idiot's book may be more fun to read, but they do so at the sacrifice of information, and are often overly simplistic).
As far as I'm concerned this is a TRUE chemistry help book. It is by far the most complete chemistry help book I have ever seen. Remember this: chemistry is not a spectator sport. It is a lot of math, and math must be practiced over and over until it is mastered. Chemistry is not a subject like biology where all you have to do is "read it and memorize it". If you're looking for a good chemistry help book, then I don't think you have to look any further than Schaum's College Chemistry.

This has got to be just about one of the best Schaum's outlines available, and that is saying a lot, since there are many good ones. I picked up a copy for self study due to a domino effect - I was attempting to learn molecular biology, which caused me to review my college biology, which in turn meant remembering my college chemistry.
I bought this book and read and worked through the exercises from chapter one on quantities and units through chapter 17, acids and bases. At no time did I need to seek out another textbook to solve the problems. Everything you need as far as "lecture" is in the outline. All included tables, figures, definitions, explanations, and example problems are complete and excellent. None of the mathematics involved in chemistry calculations is difficult, but the rules can get involved and you need a good book like this one to explain all of the variations involved in solving problems.
Chapters 1 through 14 cover what you would normally learn in a two semester sequence of college chemistry. From that point on in the outline there are a series of miscellaneous topics. Of course, the one I appreciated the most was chapter 15 on organic chemistry and biochemistry, because it directly relates to what I needed to know so I could read the references to chemistry in the biology books without scratching my head. There are also additional chapters on thermodynamics and chemistry, acids and bases, metal ions, electricity and chemistry, and the chemistry of nuclear processes.
Whether you are a college chemistry student, or someone like me who needs to review the topic, I strongly advise you to pick up a copy of this inexpensive yet extremely clear and complete Schaum's outline. It also serves as a great reference after you finish your studies.

A few years out of high school, I was working construction and decided that it was time to go to college. After doing an agonizing reappraisal of my finances, I realized that I could not afford to either take the time off work or pay a great deal for tuition. I had recently read a brief article in an issue of Reader's Digest that described the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) tests. Realizing that this would be an option for college credit and then discovering that there was a CLEP test for chemistry, I purchased this book and began studying.
It was very hard at first, balancing the chemical equations was a form of algebra problem far beyond those I was familiar with. Nevertheless, I persevered in two ways. I managed to work my way through the book doing nearly all of the problems and I also passed the CLEP chemistry test with flying colors. I then went on to get a chemistry major and only once did I slip below an A.
While I don't belittle the amount of time and effort I put forth, it was the quality of this book that got me through. While the problems were hard, they were still doable and once done, you have learned the material. No higher praise can be given.

I recently purchased this book and have enjoyed reading it. Although I am a bit confused as to why the prayers to the Saints seem so short in comparison to others I have read about. Oh well, I suppose I will learn that in due time. For now, I just enjoy this book as it was written...interesting, informative and a great help.

I have sent this book to several people who cherish it. It has a Novena for most liturgical seasons of the year and prayers for all our spiritual, physical and emotional needs. Tresaury of Novenas also contains prayers to invoke the assistance of various, powerful saints in the church: St. Joseph, St. Therese of Lisieux, St Peregrine and others.

There are also lots of illustrations, maps and other helps for anyone on any level who is reading God's word. It is easy to understand, but goes deep enough for the serious student.

The Bible Reader's Companion is a very nice concise overview of the Bible with numerous black & white drawings. The comments are interesting and the conclusions are generally conservative and traditional. If you like this book you may also enjoy THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO THE BOOK OF PROVERBS by Cody Jones. Numerous biblical characters are pointed out who illustrate King Solomon's witty observations on human nature.

The book is well laid out, with commentary and application. It is written in a down to earth way, making it easy for anyone to understand. This is one book I would NOT be without! I love it!

The thing I love about cookbooks like this is that they tend to demystify the cooking process for people who would otherwise be too timid or intimidated to try cooking anything more than basic pasta or boring soup.
The recipes in this cookbook run the gamut, but I didn't see anything in here that looks too hard to tackle or too time consuming to want to start. I like the Nigella Lawson-type of approach to cookbook writing - adding a healthy amount of narrative to give background on a recipe or explain why it's a hit - and there's plenty of that here.
Also nice to have a section on drinks, which many people forget or are, again, too daunted to try when hosting a dinner party.
David has a nice easy style to his writing and the recipes are all winners. Well worth it!

There are old favorites with a new twist and some really wild new ideas. This is a great cook book for both the new cook and the accomplished entertainer, with main dishes and lots of appetisers and unique side dishes. For you campers out there, try the "some'or" cocktail. All of the nuances you remember from the famous campfire dessert that was everybody's favorite with a healthy dose of adult flavor enhancers, all in a glass! This is a keeper book for every kitchen.
