An excellent book for both adults and children. Lauren presents an altruistic view of events preceding, during and after the loss of her father Mark, to cancer. The simplicity and clarity of her thoughts are expressed so vividly, I cried and laughed by the profound reality of the precious memories surrounding this 11 year old girl and the bonds which loving families are made of. Supported by the loving committment of her mother Kenda, all readers will experience the comfort they share with God in dealing with such a tragedy. A "must read" for hospice families, schools, churches, the community and those who try to comfort loved ones in the wake of life's inevitable end and the memorialization and celebration of a new beginning.

This book helped me so much. It made me not feel like am the only person to lose a parent. Lauren writes honestly and openly, and the book is filled with helpful ideas to help those grieving. I wish I had had this book before my loss. It would have helped me a lot, and it would have helped my parents too. I recommend this book to EVERYONE! It is a wonderful gift to give to anyone who is facing the loss of a loved one!

With the innocence of childhood embracing her, Lauren allows us all to accompany her and her mom and dad on what can only be termed a most incredible journey. A book is filled with beautiful, original illustrations, poetry, and hopeful insights into what it is like to lose someone you love. It offers very genuine reflections, in detail, of the good things that happen when someone dies. It also describes what is not so helpful at that time.
The book is dedicated to Lauren's dad. With the honesty and innocence of an 11 year old, she proudly tells you of the courage both her dad and mom showed in facing the disease. Together as a family, they share a strength, both physical and spiritual, with readers of all ages. A tremendous resource for anyone facing these challenges in life. A "must have" book for parents, schools, support groups, hospitals, churches....This is an amazing faith journey written and illustrated by a very gifted young lady.

Everyone has faced the death of a loved one. This story of a young girl's (11 years old) journey after the death of her father to cancer is uplifting, inspiring, practical, and encouraging. She tells her story, and then gently guides the reader to reflect on "their story" and to live their life in a way that honors their loved one. Although written to help children (specifically) with grief,I can think of dozens of adults I know that need to read her wisdom! She writes, "I am Daddy's legacy. This means that I am a part of him that lives on. Daddy was very courageous. If I live my life in a way that honors him, then he lives on in honor. Daddy wouldn't want me to become bitter and withdrawn over his death. He wanted me to have a good and happy life when he was alive, and he wouldn't want that to change now. So even though my life has changed, the values that Daddy taught me haven't. Daddy's death was a tragedy. But, it doesn't mean that my life is over. His life inspired me. His determination inspired me. I am so proud that he is my father." This book lifts the spirit. It is a treasure!

This book is an excellent Christian-centered perspective from a young girl about the death of her father.

Her life changes since her father's death are felt through her upfront and frank discussions about how a young child can cope and what helps and what doesn't. An excellent book for children or parents of children who have had a parent or close friend die.

Our two year old loves this bible. The lessons are short enought to hold their attention and the pictures are great plus there is a hidden Night Light on the pages that she loves to find!
What a great way to begin emphasizing the importance of Gods word.

This is the BEST bible for families wanting more than story time... You will make memories with your kids as you sing the opening song to set the tone, read the bible story, look for Night-Light and talk about the story with the questions given. If you are new at this, don't worry, there are even sample prayers you can pray with your children every night. After story time and prayers, singing the closing song just completes this special time.

I got this book for my almost 5-year-old son about a month ago
and he's been asking me to read it to him every night.
He likes to look at the colorful pictures and ask questions
about the characters. The story is a little overly simplified
for the pre-K kids, so I usually go into a little more details
to satisfy his curiosity. However, I like the style of the
writing. Its use of rhythms and repetitive phrases makes the
message easy for the kids to memorize. I'd like to get another
bible with more story telling for him.

She loves it too! She has worn the cover off!

This one is by far the best out of this series. I don't know who enjoys these books the most, my 10-month old son or my husband who is learning Spanish. The beautiful graphics in all the books in this series keep them both engaged. After he outgrows these books, we are looking forward to utilizing them as a resource for art projects. This particular book contains no errors per se, but keep in mind that the Spanish language is very rich, and there are different words (used in Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America) that mean the same thing.

Whether you're introducing Spanish to your child, or wanting a nice review, this book is GREAT because of the bright, simple pictures, its sturdiness, and its perfect size for younger children through upper elementary.

I pull out this book when I need another way to drill numbers in my Spanish classes. It goes great with the numbers lesson in the workbook Flip Flop Spanish!

A enjoy looking at this book just as much as my children do. I am a mother of 4 and a preschool teacher. The colors in this book are simple and bold. It is a great resource for teaching Spanish/English and numbers in the classroom. I like the fact that the Spanish words are not the simplest choices. It challenges the Spanish learner in me. I use this book with pre-schoolers mainly 2 year olds. It is easily adaptable to the older classroom learning Spanish.

MY NUMBERS/MIS NUMEROS is a simple, fun book. There are two pages for the numbers one through ten. The first page shows the number, with the name of the number in English and Spanish. On the facing page is a picture, with as many instances of that object as go with the number.

The illustrations in MY NUMBERS/MIS NUMEROS are spectacular. They look as if they were made using cutouts of construction paper, and combine overall simplicity with some fascinating detail. For example, for the number one the illustration is of a salamander with little round ends to his toes. My son puts his finger out and traces over the shapes with fascination. Each of the ten illustrations is excellent.

My 10-month old son loves MY NUMBERS/MIS NUMEROS. It is one that he will pull out of the book basket and look at at on his own. A good friend of mine, an artists and former teacher, loves it. Her 2 year old son also enjoyed reading this book, enough that we read it over and over when I recently babysat him. I am also enjoying MY NUMBERS/MIS NUMEROS as a way to brush up on a bit of my Spanish.

The vocabulary: 1 salamander, 2 leaves, 3 strawberries, 4 hearts, 5 carrots, 6 snakes, 7 stars, 8 bumblebees, 9 ladybugs, and 10 butterflies.

This book is a superb compilation of the complexities of the fields of neuropeptides. Portions of it are general enough to be of real value to any neuroscientist who wishes to understand more about this complex field. In its entirety the book offers an excellent summary which can be of use to anyone no matter how specialized or advanced in the neuropeptide field. The book begins with an excellent summary of the origins of neuropeptide theory, the discovery of the first of these transmitters, and a general summary of where we are today with the identification of this enormous group of peptides. For those beginning a career in research concerning neuropeptides, there is some excellent generalization of the techniques which are involved in discovering, quantifying and manipulating these neurotransmitters. The section on biosynthesis and action of neuropeptides is extremely well done and simple enough for anyone interested to understand, as is the description and localization of neuropeptides. The neuroendocrine system is presented in a very simple but complete form, and the section on the blood brain barrier brings anyone up to date in the function of the barrier transport system. Recpetors are described generally and then individual classes of receptors are described in great detail. This allows any specific group of receptors and any specific system to be investigated thoroughly. The book is well referenced. The illustrations and especially the schematic figures are exceptionally well done. All the pituitary peptides are thoroughly discussed and the literature surrounding them summarized. The section on the opiate neuropeptides is also well done, and then a number of peptideswhich are much less well known, particularly those that involve gut and other visceral functions are thoroughly discussed. The book is an invaluable resource. Anyone casually interested in the field can learn much by superficial perusal, but the real value will be in the thorough review of each topic which makes each individual chapter a valuable source for anyone wishing detailed information. This is really "must reading" for the graduate student interested in this field.

Given the complexity and rapid growth of research in neuropeptides it is perhaps not surprising that few texts have attempted to give an overview of this field. We should, therefore, be grateful to Fleur Strand for her well-written and comprehensive monograph. The author is an experienced neuroscientist who has been actively involved in research and teaching on the subject of neuropeptides, and the book is a coherent and readable volume that provides a great deal of valuable information to advanced students and others who are interested in neuropeptides. The book is well prepared with clear illustrations, and a comprehensive bibliography and index. The author provides an easily understood review of the many different experimental approaches needed to study the genes, receptors distribution, biosynthesis, release and actions of the neuropeptides. These include molecular neurobiology techniques, immunohistochemical-mapping procedures, the use of genetically engineered animals and studies of peptide actions at the cellular and systemic levels, using neurochemical, neurophysiological and behavioral analyses. A section on the relationship between neuropeptides, stress and the immune system is particularly well prepared, as is the explanation of the physiological roles of neuropeptides in the broader context of biology and evolution. Each chapter concludes with a detailed summary of the conclusions drawn, highlighting the main concepts, which makes for easy review. A concluding section on invertebrate neuropeptides again mixes peptides of neural and non-neural origin but provides a valuable overview of the evolution and biological importance of peptides as chemical signalling molecules.

The Book "Neuropeptides: Regulators of Physiological Processes" is terrific. Not only does it provide the most comprehensive review of the field available anywhere , but it does so in an elegant style that remains amazingly easy to read. Moreover, the material is put together in such a way as to provide sophisticated new insights into the field.

The Rosary was in my grandmother's library when I was a young teenager, and it's been my favorite book since then. The heroine inspired me to name our daughter, Jane. In my retirement years, I dreamed of writing romance novels as pure and memorable as Barclay's. Steeple Hill has published four of my books. The Rosary is simply the book I love most, if I had to choose one book from my library, to have till the end of my life, this would be the Rosary. I read it every few months.
The Rosary takes you to delicate gardens of England mansions in 1900s and tells a story about two most loved people of the British high society. They are Jane Champion and Garth Dalmain who are in love but face a great obstacle. The story is about those two and their struggle to come together. It also gives a taste of lives of British socielites at those times. The language of book is especially delicious, and it has its own sense of humor. I love this book!

Written in 1910, THE ROSARY still proves to be a very successful story in the year 2003. By today's standards, it may be described as quaint but still very enjoyable. The writing is lyrical, descriptive, and charming; the love storyline is ageless.

The story revolves around Jane Champion and Garth Dalmain. Jane is talented, smart, good-natured and independent. However she is a unique heroine because unlike the female protagonists in many romance stories, Jane is described as homely-looking. She is also older than the hero, Garth - a vibrant, energetic, gifted, and extraordinarily handsome man.

The title refers to a popular song written in 1898 by composers Ethelbert Nevin and Robert Cameron Rogers. Garth realizes that he is in love with Jane after hearing her sing the song at a public performance. When he declares his love to Jane and wants to marry her, she turns him down, although she also loves him; Jane doesn't believe that Garth will be truly happy living with a plain-looking woman for the rest of his life. Broken-hearted, the two part ways but reunite, later, under sad and unexpected circumstances.

How do Jane and Garth finally accept each other? Writer Florence Barclay writes a story that makes you want to keep reading till you find out how the lovers reunite.

I first heard about THE ROSARY, a few years ago, on a T.V. program that reported a true story of a woman who always mentioned the book. A relative of hers decided to search for the then out-of-print book and give it to her as a surprise gift. Through what could only be described as a miracle, the relative eventually found the book. Fascinated with the story of the woman's attachment to the book, I decided to look for it. I couldn't find the book anywhere. Years later, I happened to mentioned THE ROSARY to a friend. Guess where she found it? On Amazon.com! I think it's great that anyone can find the book (and many other things) here!

If you like stories like Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion, and Sense and Sensibility, you'll enjoy this tale. Reading THE ROSARY is like taking a breath of fresh air.

A love story that's bigger than life

Review Date: 2005-05-29
The book is the story of how, with the help of God and godly friends, a seemingly star-crossed couple face misunderstanding, heartbreak, and tragedy.

Love stories often disappoint these days, perhaps because the characters seem smaller than life, but The Rosary satisfies because the characters are larger than life. When I first read this story many years ago, even though I wasn't old enough to fully understand or appreciate it, since I didn't even know what a rosary was at the time, I do recall that it stirred me deeply. Now, having just re-read it for the first time in decades, I am amazed at its continuing power to touch emotions and inspire ideals, even though it was written almost a century ago.

Admittedly, the author is no Charlotte Bronte. The writing is weak in places, and sometimes the dialogue drags. But it doesn't matter; the hero and heroine are so appealing, you have to keep reading. The heroine Jane Champion is on the surface a plain Jane, somewhat like Bronte's Jane Eyre except that she has a larger frame than Eyre's and a far more assertive personality. Indeed, she has such great inner strength and beauty that one wonders how so many men can overlook her. When an unlikely man unexpectedly catches a glimpse into her soul, he responds by falling deeply in love with her. But having so little experience with love, she doesn't recognize it, or trust it, when it finally comes.

The hero is the opposite of Bronte's Mr. Rochester. He is extremely goodlooking, youthful, lighthearted, artistic, and in high demand in society. Surprisingly, it turns out that he too has great depth of character. His love, once given, appears irretractable and untarnishable.

The Rosary is a reminder that the love between The One Man and The One Woman, as the author expresses it, can be an ennobling sacrament that, if given the opportunity, can empower them to become the full persons that God has created them to be.

It's a Lovely, Lovely Book!

In the five years that I have been involved in support groups for the partners of people with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD), I have read maybe 150 books on mental health.

Many of these books explain clearly and sometimes even eloquently the manifestations and treatment issues related to AD/HD, OCD, bi-polar disorder, anxiety, depression and the host of comorbidities that are often traveling companions. If your loved one has any or several of these disorders, part of taking care of yourself and your family is learning the facts so you can "come out of the fog" -- the confusion and disorientation that living with a person's mental disorder can often bring. Some touch on how the brain conditions affect loved ones.

This book, however, is the only one that deeply, directly and specifically addresses the needs of the person whose loved one has a brain disorder. That it does so not with pithy platitudes and tales of woe but with profoundly wise, compassionate, and practical concepts strikes me as pretty rare. Not to mention life-changing.

The writing is clear and engaging, but I especially appreciate the way the book is organized. By the time people find a book like this, they often need all the cognitive clarity they can get, and this book provides it. No ponderous narratives to wade through here. Instead, each chapter is organized by questions the reader might have and that Gravitz inspires, starting at the simplest concepts and progressing to the more complex. For example:

--How will you know if your loved one has OCD and if it is severe enough to warrant professional attention?
--What causes OCD? Is it a biological diseases? Is it genetic? Is it just in the person's mind?
--What is home like in a familiy under the influence of OCD?
--What needs to occur in order for the family to recover?
--What strategies can you use to help yourself?
--What can you do when your partner refuses treatment?
--How will you know if you are enabling?

If you're looking for "tips and strategies" to deal with your family member's disorder, you'll find some of that here. But for people who are ready to grapple with the core issues and move towards deeper healing, this book delivers like none other I've seen. It is an inspiration.

As an eager but somewhat overwhelmed newcomer to the world of ambient music, I've found this overview to be informative & invaluable. It's constructed like many ambient pieces: layers of information & exotica that overlap, shade into one another, and in many ways recreate in prose the experience of the music. Yet at the same time, there's a clarity & focus to the writing, which becomes apparent as the reader flows from one topic to the next. By the end, I'd not only gained some real knowledge & understanding, I'd been given some excellent starting points for further exploration. An exemplary volume, highly recommended!

I love to read about music, but there are so few good music writers it seems. This book approaches the development of incidental, ambient, experimental, avant garde, and world musics in a way that mimics the music itself - with random bursts of observations, anecdotes, interviews, and just plain bizarre missives. I encourage anyone with a sense of adventure and an open mind to grab a copy.

There is a similarly-titled double CD which came out to accompany the book, but I can't see it on Amazon. It is as eclectic as the book and features a lot of the artists interviewed and mentioned - Sun Ra, Aphex Twin, and others. I have played the CD to death and would recommend it. You gotta respect a compilation that puts The Beach Boys right next to African Headcharge, or My Bloody Valentine next to Brian Eno - and makes it work so well.

The book also features a list of albums and artists in the appendix, which I found useful as a way of doing further research.

Another book in a similar vein is Kodwo Eshun's "More Brilliant Than The Sun", though it focuses solely on the innovators in electronic music.

If you like ambient, or....atmospheric music of any sort you should give this book a chance as it a nice erudite survey of the various genres and musicians that are linked to..or been influenced by ambient music. It is not a linear survey thru time, but rather this book reminds me of a map which Toop rolls around visiting here and there with a few jumps now and then as he discusses how in the last 100 years "music has reflected the world back to itself and to its listeners". The writing is enjoyable, and full of poetry, such that I kept finding myself underlining odd bits and pieces every few pages and I wound up compiling them for myself for future reference. There is also a nice bibliography and discography at the end of the book.

Fascinating and frustrating

Incredible in many ways, Toop's book attempts to trace a quiet revolution in twentieth century music. One cannot deny the impressive breadth of his knowledge, from Stockhausen to Miles all the way to Future Sound of London and their ilk. His writing is quite often beautiful, if occasionally one feels like he is writing too many words to actually say anything.

Ultimately, however, I leave the book feeling a bit underwhelmed. Ironically, it is the book's very eclecticism that works against it. I personally did not see the connectionsbetween, say, the music of Kraftwerk and Toop's (admittedly fascinating) discussion of the sound of the Amazon jungle. These disgressions ultimately make the book useless as a survey. Of course, I doubt that it was meant to be so, but Toop fails to make the kinds of connections that have given books by Greil Marcus and others a fascinating unity.

Perhaps, though, this is the point. Much like the ambient music that serves as the centerpoint of the book, this book simply floats by, not asking you to make any conclusions. It is probably best read in bits, before bed or in the bathroom, where the individual moments of brilliance can be better appreciated. Very ambient, indeed.

David Toop is both a musician and writer, having done ambient music, dub music with the likes of Prince Far I, and of course numerous written articles on ambient and experimental aspects of popular music. I'd have to say that this book is perhaps one of the definitive studies on this musical genre, covering the aesthetics, listening practica, concepts, influences, directions, and so on of this growing musical field in a very inclusive and insightful style. This is perhaps one of the best written companions to everything ambient, as well as influences on ambient music from as far afield as Sun Ra and Karlheinz Stockhausen. Anyone interested in knowing more...either in scope, or deeper within...on ambient should obtain a copy of this book.

On Cloud Nine: Weathering the Challenge of Many Generations in the Workplace

On Cloud Nine is written as a fantastical tale of a man who just been appointed as Director of the Weather Customer Satisfaction Bureau. As the newbie, he immediately starts to make changes with the assumption that the old system isn't working and needs to be scrapped. To his surprise, however, he finds out that once in place his ideas create an even bigger mess that not only threatens his job but those of many others as well. In trying to find a solution to his problems, this man learns much about working through the challenges of having several generations in the workplace and using the best of all of these individuals to make a more successful plan.

I think that this little tale is a very effective way of showing both the challenges and benefits of the various generations of workers. Not only is this understanding extremely important in today's business world where Matures, Baby Boomers, Generation Xers, and now Millennials are now working together but also in the general population where the different morals, attitudes, and work ethics appear to be so very different between these different groups of individuals.

"Wally shuffled over to his laptop and started fiddling with his presentation. He was so preoccupied that he did not notice the huge swarm of clouds beginning to gather around the mountain's snowy peaks." ~ pg. 39

Robert W. Wendover and Terrence L. Gargiulo present their wisdom in a fable format that addresses the current clashes between the way things have always been done and adjusting to the newest technology available.

As old and new clash, the authors invite all the "clouds" to a meeting to talk about their differences rumbling before the storm. Eldon Dedini provides humorous cartoons throughout that enliven the story and keep you smiling from start to finish.

Chapter eleven is an explanation of the story and explains what can be learned from the fable: "Sometimes, listening and quietly facilitating can be the most effective means for developing relationships among different groups."

Questions and Answers and a special section for Frequently Asked Questions gives the story practical applications for all work environments and encourage all employees to reconcile the differences that abound as life moves forward at a rapid pace.

I love this book. It is so well written, humorous and the book really hit home with me. In my profession, I deal with people that all have different points of view and agendas: buyers, sellers, other agents, lenders, vendors, contractors - and they are of all different ages. I found the story so very pertinent to my business. It inspired me to work harder to move towards teamwork solutions rather than to give in to all the different personalities. And I absolutely love the cartoons by Eldon Dedini - they make me smile.

I enjoyed this book very much; particularly because of it's quick read, hunorous presentation of the subject matter, and because it helped me to do my job better! I train large groups of "twenty somethings", and being a Boomer myself, I find some of their actions and responses confusing. This book encouraged me to adjust a portion of my material, and the way I deliver it, to bring a more effective learning environment to these people. That's a Win-Win for everyone. Thanks.

Robert Wendover & Terrence Gargiulo's ON CLOUD NINE: AN INSPIRING TALE reads like fiction but provides an involving vignette about age-related differences in the workplace which hold great meaning for modern workforces. From young people who think they know it all because they have more energy to elders who are more experienced but resist change, and customers who see their satisfaction with the results eroding, ON CLOUD NINE makes a fable out of the first part and leads into real tips on how to improve communication and foster teamwork in a multigenerational workplace. Whether you're a workforce manager or a worker, ON CLOUD NINE offers many coping tips.

Pam's family "journey" was similar to mine. My children lost their father when they were ages 6 & 4. I was pregnant with my third. I wish Pam's book had been available at that time, for it was so difficult to explain everything to my children. The way this book is split into sections for the benefit of children and adults alike makes it a great tool to have at a time when everything in the world seems so confusing. My children are now 18, 16 & 11, and all three of them thoroughly enjoyed the story. My advice to readers is if you've experienced a loss, purchase this publication for your child and yourself!

Wonderful, helpful book.

Pam Adams has written a book that will help both children and adults in grieving a lost loved one. There are activities for a child to complete alone (recording special memories of good times with their loved one) as well as activities for the adults in the child's life to complete with him. There are sections that explain the grieving process and tell the child what he might expect to feel, all the time reassuring him he is not alone or different in the ways he responds to the loss. There is also assurance that life will get better and the child will be able to cope and function.
I bought my first copy as a gift to a 10 year old child at my school who recently lost her mother; I intend to buy another copy as a donation to my church library.

Very helpful book.

This book will be very helpful for adults working with children who have suffered a loss, as well as for children themselves. There are sections to record special memories of the child's lost loved one, as well as inspirational stories of others who have lost important people in their lives and have gone on to live positive lives. Although it was written for a boy, it is also useful to girls. I bought mine as a gift to a child at my school who recently lost her mother; I intend to buy another as a gift to my church library.

I think this book could be good for both grieving children and adults. It contains materials to help encourage and inspire, such as stories about others who have dealt with loss, as well as writing exercises to encourage children to let their feelings out.
It is designed to help anyone dealing with any type of loss realize that they are not alone in the feelings that they experience.

This is a great book for helping kids to deal with grief.

I must write to recommend this book. Pam Adams did a great job in writing her son's story and struggles in dealing with his grief over losing his father to suicide without dwelling on the gory details of suicide. It is a book of hope and is very uplifting while giving excellent advice to children for dealing with their feelings of grief. It can be used to deal with grief over many things - it is not specific to suicide. If you work with children, you simply must have this book!

Let me say flat out that this is one of the most flat-out useful reference books for anyone who cares about writing. (Yes, I checked that first sentence in the book!) It deserves a place on every writer's shelf. Concise and easy to use. Gilman's 3-page introduction answers a couple of nagging questions, and then it's off to the races with over 14,000 words and phrases. This book is still being published by the National Court Reporters Association. Get it. You won't be disappointed.

Otherwise, a great book.

Obviously, more people *need* this awesome book! :) Editing medical transcription, I use it all the time and see instances multiple times daily where others should have...Great also because it's jam-packed but a really thin, space-saving volume.
