The book is dedicated to Lauren's dad. With the honesty and innocence of an 11 year old, she proudly tells you of the courage both her dad and mom showed in facing the disease. Together as a family, they share a strength, both physical and spiritual, with readers of all ages. A tremendous resource for anyone facing these challenges in life. A "must have" book for parents, schools, support groups, hospitals, churches....This is an amazing faith journey written and illustrated by a very gifted young lady.

and he's been asking me to read it to him every night.
He likes to look at the colorful pictures and ask questions
about the characters. The story is a little overly simplified
for the pre-K kids, so I usually go into a little more details
to satisfy his curiosity. However, I like the style of the
writing. Its use of rhythms and repetitive phrases makes the
message easy for the kids to memorize. I'd like to get another
bible with more story telling for him.

The illustrations in MY NUMBERS/MIS NUMEROS are spectacular. They look as if they were made using cutouts of construction paper, and combine overall simplicity with some fascinating detail. For example, for the number one the illustration is of a salamander with little round ends to his toes. My son puts his finger out and traces over the shapes with fascination. Each of the ten illustrations is excellent.
My 10-month old son loves MY NUMBERS/MIS NUMEROS. It is one that he will pull out of the book basket and look at at on his own. A good friend of mine, an artists and former teacher, loves it. Her 2 year old son also enjoyed reading this book, enough that we read it over and over when I recently babysat him. I am also enjoying MY NUMBERS/MIS NUMEROS as a way to brush up on a bit of my Spanish.
The vocabulary: 1 salamander, 2 leaves, 3 strawberries, 4 hearts, 5 carrots, 6 snakes, 7 stars, 8 bumblebees, 9 ladybugs, and 10 butterflies.

The best romance everReview Date: 2008-06-29
simply the bestReview Date: 2006-01-24
The Rosary takes you to delicate gardens of England mansions in 1900s and tells a story about two most loved people of the British high society. They are Jane Champion and Garth Dalmain who are in love but face a great obstacle. The story is about those two and their struggle to come together. It also gives a taste of lives of British socielites at those times. The language of book is especially delicious, and it has its own sense of humor. I love this book!
A Timeless RomanceReview Date: 2003-02-08
The story revolves around Jane Champion and Garth Dalmain. Jane is talented, smart, good-natured and independent. However she is a unique heroine because unlike the female protagonists in many romance stories, Jane is described as homely-looking. She is also older than the hero, Garth - a vibrant, energetic, gifted, and extraordinarily handsome man.
The title refers to a popular song written in 1898 by composers Ethelbert Nevin and Robert Cameron Rogers. Garth realizes that he is in love with Jane after hearing her sing the song at a public performance. When he declares his love to Jane and wants to marry her, she turns him down, although she also loves him; Jane doesn't believe that Garth will be truly happy living with a plain-looking woman for the rest of his life. Broken-hearted, the two part ways but reunite, later, under sad and unexpected circumstances.
How do Jane and Garth finally accept each other? Writer Florence Barclay writes a story that makes you want to keep reading till you find out how the lovers reunite.
I first heard about THE ROSARY, a few years ago, on a T.V. program that reported a true story of a woman who always mentioned the book. A relative of hers decided to search for the then out-of-print book and give it to her as a surprise gift. Through what could only be described as a miracle, the relative eventually found the book. Fascinated with the story of the woman's attachment to the book, I decided to look for it. I couldn't find the book anywhere. Years later, I happened to mentioned THE ROSARY to a friend. Guess where she found it? On Amazon.com! I think it's great that anyone can find the book (and many other things) here!
If you like stories like Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion, and Sense and Sensibility, you'll enjoy this tale. Reading THE ROSARY is like taking a breath of fresh air.

A love story that's bigger than lifeReview Date: 2005-05-29
Love stories often disappoint these days, perhaps because the characters seem smaller than life, but The Rosary satisfies because the characters are larger than life. When I first read this story many years ago, even though I wasn't old enough to fully understand or appreciate it, since I didn't even know what a rosary was at the time, I do recall that it stirred me deeply. Now, having just re-read it for the first time in decades, I am amazed at its continuing power to touch emotions and inspire ideals, even though it was written almost a century ago.
Admittedly, the author is no Charlotte Bronte. The writing is weak in places, and sometimes the dialogue drags. But it doesn't matter; the hero and heroine are so appealing, you have to keep reading. The heroine Jane Champion is on the surface a plain Jane, somewhat like Bronte's Jane Eyre except that she has a larger frame than Eyre's and a far more assertive personality. Indeed, she has such great inner strength and beauty that one wonders how so many men can overlook her. When an unlikely man unexpectedly catches a glimpse into her soul, he responds by falling deeply in love with her. But having so little experience with love, she doesn't recognize it, or trust it, when it finally comes.
The hero is the opposite of Bronte's Mr. Rochester. He is extremely goodlooking, youthful, lighthearted, artistic, and in high demand in society. Surprisingly, it turns out that he too has great depth of character. His love, once given, appears irretractable and untarnishable.
The Rosary is a reminder that the love between The One Man and The One Woman, as the author expresses it, can be an ennobling sacrament that, if given the opportunity, can empower them to become the full persons that God has created them to be.

Herb Gravitz has done it again!Review Date: 1999-11-05
A much needed book for family members who live with OCD.Review Date: 1998-12-01
New Hope for the Families should be read by all professionals to reminded them that OCD is a family illness; professional must treat the entire family, not just the individual with the OCD. Herb identifies the pain and frustration of the family as they deal with the uncomfortable issues of this disorder and offers great suggestions to help families move beyond the influence of OCD.
This book is a must read for every family living under the web of OCD. Order your copy now.
Helpful in dealing with any disorder, not just OCDReview Date: 2006-03-28
Many of these books explain clearly and sometimes even eloquently the manifestations and treatment issues related to AD/HD, OCD, bi-polar disorder, anxiety, depression and the host of comorbidities that are often traveling companions. If your loved one has any or several of these disorders, part of taking care of yourself and your family is learning the facts so you can "come out of the fog" -- the confusion and disorientation that living with a person's mental disorder can often bring. Some touch on how the brain conditions affect loved ones.
This book, however, is the only one that deeply, directly and specifically addresses the needs of the person whose loved one has a brain disorder. That it does so not with pithy platitudes and tales of woe but with profoundly wise, compassionate, and practical concepts strikes me as pretty rare. Not to mention life-changing.
The writing is clear and engaging, but I especially appreciate the way the book is organized. By the time people find a book like this, they often need all the cognitive clarity they can get, and this book provides it. No ponderous narratives to wade through here. Instead, each chapter is organized by questions the reader might have and that Gravitz inspires, starting at the simplest concepts and progressing to the more complex. For example:
--How will you know if your loved one has OCD and if it is severe enough to warrant professional attention?
--What causes OCD? Is it a biological diseases? Is it genetic? Is it just in the person's mind?
--What is home like in a familiy under the influence of OCD?
--What needs to occur in order for the family to recover?
--What strategies can you use to help yourself?
--What can you do when your partner refuses treatment?
--How will you know if you are enabling?
If you're looking for "tips and strategies" to deal with your family member's disorder, you'll find some of that here. But for people who are ready to grapple with the core issues and move towards deeper healing, this book delivers like none other I've seen. It is an inspiration.

A guide to a new musical worldReview Date: 2008-07-22
Broaches a vast subject in an engaging and refreshing wayReview Date: 2006-02-21
There is a similarly-titled double CD which came out to accompany the book, but I can't see it on Amazon. It is as eclectic as the book and features a lot of the artists interviewed and mentioned - Sun Ra, Aphex Twin, and others. I have played the CD to death and would recommend it. You gotta respect a compilation that puts The Beach Boys right next to African Headcharge, or My Bloody Valentine next to Brian Eno - and makes it work so well.
The book also features a list of albums and artists in the appendix, which I found useful as a way of doing further research.
Another book in a similar vein is Kodwo Eshun's "More Brilliant Than The Sun", though it focuses solely on the innovators in electronic music.

Fascinating and frustratingReview Date: 2001-09-13
Ultimately, however, I leave the book feeling a bit underwhelmed. Ironically, it is the book's very eclecticism that works against it. I personally did not see the connectionsbetween, say, the music of Kraftwerk and Toop's (admittedly fascinating) discussion of the sound of the Amazon jungle. These disgressions ultimately make the book useless as a survey. Of course, I doubt that it was meant to be so, but Toop fails to make the kinds of connections that have given books by Greil Marcus and others a fascinating unity.
Perhaps, though, this is the point. Much like the ambient music that serves as the centerpoint of the book, this book simply floats by, not asking you to make any conclusions. It is probably best read in bits, before bed or in the bathroom, where the individual moments of brilliance can be better appreciated. Very ambient, indeed.

On Cloud Nine: Weathering the Challenge of Many Generations in the WorkplaceReview Date: 2007-07-16
I think that this little tale is a very effective way of showing both the challenges and benefits of the various generations of workers. Not only is this understanding extremely important in today's business world where Matures, Baby Boomers, Generation Xers, and now Millennials are now working together but also in the general population where the different morals, attitudes, and work ethics appear to be so very different between these different groups of individuals.
Avoiding an Office StormReview Date: 2006-05-25
Robert W. Wendover and Terrence L. Gargiulo present their wisdom in a fable format that addresses the current clashes between the way things have always been done and adjusting to the newest technology available.
As old and new clash, the authors invite all the "clouds" to a meeting to talk about their differences rumbling before the storm. Eldon Dedini provides humorous cartoons throughout that enliven the story and keep you smiling from start to finish.
Chapter eleven is an explanation of the story and explains what can be learned from the fable: "Sometimes, listening and quietly facilitating can be the most effective means for developing relationships among different groups."
Questions and Answers and a special section for Frequently Asked Questions gives the story practical applications for all work environments and encourage all employees to reconcile the differences that abound as life moves forward at a rapid pace.
