I read this book, thinking I had people in my life that would fit the description of porcupines, and that I could pick up a few pointers on how to handle them. Imagine my horror and dismay when I discovered that I'M a porcupine!!! That is, I have a goodly number of the characteristics that the author uses to define porcupine behavior. I was stunned to see that many qualities that I saw in myself as being "helpful" to people are in fact toxic and painful. When I looked at these traits from the point of view of "would I want someone to treat ME that way?" the answer was a definite "No." *sigh* Thus, reading the book became one of the most painful experiences of my life. Now I have to say that I think that I'm one of the nicest porcupines you'll ever meet. Nonetheless, I saw traits in myself that need to be changed. Mr. Lund gives you steps to take if you want to eliminate these behaviors, and it has been my daunting task to work on this ever since. It took me about three years (!!!!! NO, I'm not kidding) to complete the assignment of going through one twenty-four day without saying anything negative at all. Try it before you roll your eyeballs into next week. It's (MUCH) harder than you think. I'm not sure a truly toxic person could take this book. But it does give good strategy suggestions for protecting yourself from such people.
All I can say is good luck.
All I can say is good luck.

This book is great when dealing with all kinds of personalities. But what I liked most was being able to identify and cope with the different types. And yes even finding that there were tough to love spots in my reflection. Really a good book for relating to parents, children, spouses and self and anyone you have a close working relationship with.

I think the general approach and specific techniques advocated in How To Keep Your C.O.O.L. With Your Kids is excellent. I especially endorse the emphasis placed on the parent/adult effecting change in their own behavior as a means of not only increasing their own effectiveness, but avoiding making the situation even worse. I am not aware of any other resources available that adopts this approach and I'm sure this book will prove to be a valuable tool for parents. A. Mitch Cooper, Ph.D.

One of the best books I have read in the last twenty years...first of its kind...applications are universal...great benefit to me, my administrators, teachers, parents and ultimately the students that are served in my school district.. an effective informational vehicle to educate parents...I particularly liked the sample exercises and the protocols from which individual and group work might be initiated...very powerful...It integrates behavior and stress management techniques with practical parenting strategies. I believe that this melding will prove useful to many conscientious parents with school age children. Frank Cranley, Superintendent of Schools

This book helped me look at some of my own situations in a new light and I almost cried when I realized that I had been sending some very negative messages without ever intending to to my children. It taught me to see how I would react if someone was sending those very same messages to me -- and I found out that I would have probably reacted the same as my children did (defiantly, angrilly). The author reminds us that our kids are not perfect and we can't expect perfection from them at all times. And that kids who are harder to be around can cause us to tense up even when they just walk into the room (a nonverbal sign that we don't mean to send, but the kid probably picks up). I have done better around my kids and have had at least two or three encounters that really, really tested me and would have sent me through the roof in the past, but I was able to get through with great results without screaming. Of course, I still slip up, I'm definitely not perfect, but the book says that is all part of the learning process. And I know I've gotten better and hope to keep on working on what the author has taught me.

Informative and Enjoyable book on Early Christianity

"In The Fullness of Time" is an updated version of a trilogy on early Christianity written by the historian Paul L. Maier. Part I covers the Christmas story, Part II covers Easter, and Part III takes readers from Pentacost to Nero's persecutions. I had previously read and enjoyed a number of Maier's fictional works and I had high expectations for this non-fiction work. I was not disappointed.
The book is a fast read and the author kept my interest. Each section was concise though informative. Information about the region's climate and background stories of some of the key players helped flesh out the familiar story. The book also contains numerous photographs to help the reader visualize the places the author is writting about. Maier avoids sensationally radical theories or over-literalism that mar many works on the same subject. Overall, an enjoyable book about the rise of Christianity.

Pail Maier, a expert in ancient history, has written a great book. from my understanding is that, this book was three different books now put into one. If you are a new Christian, you need this book. If you read this book as a new believer, you will have a better grasp of the background of the NT in reading this book, than going to a expositional preaching church for two years. It will lay a great foundation for your walk with the living Christ. If you a long time believer, and have not read this book, you should, for it will open your eyes, to the NT. Dr. Maier goes into the Christmas story, Easter Sunday and the early church. Great book.

Maier does a good job putting Christmas and Easter into their appropriate historical contexts. Lots of good information that helps to place both into perspective.
The third part of the book, on the early church, is not as well done. There is less historical and archaelogical information brought into play. It was still pretty good, just not as good as the first two sections.
Still, I would recommend this book as one to help build a foundation.

Paul Maier is a truly gifted lecturer. I've had the pleasure of watching two of his videos and if I lived anywhere near Western Michigan University, I'd sneak into the back of his classroom (he is a member of the history faculty there) on a regular basis - he has a gift for making the First Century A.D. accessible.
"In the Fullness of Time" continues this tradition. Maier has basically consolidated 3 other books into one larger volume (with a few changes) and he discusses the first Christmas, the first Easter and the ministries of the early Apostles, especially Paul and Peter.
Maier does a great job of bringing actual documentation that supports the stories of Christmas, Easter and the Book of Acts. He includes the works of Roman and Jewish historians, explains Roman and Jewish religious and political practices and deals with alternate theories that have been proposed. While this could be dry reading, Maier makes it lively and this volume reads more like a novel than a textbook.
So, who is this book for? If you are a well-read Christian who has looked into many of the facts that back the New Testament as it is written on your own, you won't find much new ground covered in this book. The internet has lots of this information scattered about. However, you are unlikely to find sources as concise and as well-written as this one. Plus, if you are interested in further research, it is well-documented with tons of footnotes.
If you are a new Christian or are newly interested in the history behind Christianity, this is a powerful introduction.
I give this one a grade of "A"

Maybe it's because I enjoy reading historical literature... or maybe I am facinated by the notion the Gospel accounts are historical in nature. Paul Maier has done a wonderful job combining backround historical context, archeological artifacts, and a clear logical approach into a credible and refreshing look at what is was like to: experience the first Christmas, the first Easter, and what it was like for the early Christians after the resurrection. This is surprisingly enjoyable read.

The book is amazing!! The author beyond words and all in all is equal to an amazing reading and great learning. Noah is the best elephant friend, a person can ever relate to. He talks in a very human language about how the world had presented to him.I enjoyed every minute. And will advise anyone to read it, is worth the trip. As as someone said: " You can't judge a book by its cover." Don't let the elephant in the front fool you. The book is terrific.

And as someone siad " you can't judge a book by its cover" don't be fooled by the cover and how many pages you will have to read. For it is worth it.

I believe we all need a little dose of something that fills the spirit. In The Way That Elephants Do, you travel the road of life with Noah the Wanderer and feel his triumphs, heartaches, and at times deep pain. I found myself indentifying with Noah as he met the various challenges in his life ranging from coming of age, to the death of a loved one, to the betrayel of those closes to him. This is a must read for those that are real "feelers" and enjoy characters in a novel coming to life. I found myself laughing and crying, as will you.

I just finished reading "In the Way That Elephants Do." My mother read it, and immediately ordered copies for my sister and brother and me.
The story of Noah the Wanderer teaches the reader many things, from patience, perserverence, and practicality, to strength, stamina, and stability, and all the wonderful qualities in between. I laughed with Noah at the antics of his wonderful friends and at himself; I cried with his disappointments and trials; I rejoiced with him during achievements and successes.
As soon as my mother-in-law finishes the book, I will read it again. This time with my children.
A MUST READ!

Touching, thought-provoking, and beautifully told, the story of Noah, and that of mankind, is one that will linger in your heart and your mind for a very long time.
In The Way That Elephants Do by David Kilpatrick is a deeply moving epic tale of one elephant's life. Although the story is told from the perspective of an inquisitive and nomadic pachyderm, you're drawn into his world with ease. Danger, love, history, the world, and the connection between humans and animals are deftly combined in the portrait of Noah, the Wanderer.
Noah tells his story to a boy, one of the few "Keepers" who can understand his tale. The story isn't just about him, it's about elephants, man, our relationship through history, and it's done in a way that our history books will never allow. History, the good and the bad, is revealed without revision. No excuses for bad behavior, only the understanding that this is simply how we humans, and elephants, are.
There is something here that rings so true and pure. Moving, even haunting, without ever becoming preachy. The story of Noah, and of all elephants, isn't that different from that of humankind. Perhaps the story flows so well and with such clarity because it's told simply. Maybe it's the honesty and the "no excuses" manner in which the tale is related. Or, possibly, the magic of this story is in the relationship between man and animal and our desire to be the chosen one. The one to whom this story is told. Because of the way the book is written, the reader does become the chosen one. We're taken into Noah's confidence as one who will understand.
I can't imagine the months of research put into this book. I don't know how David does it, but he blends the history of man and animal seamlessly into a thought-provoking tale that turns the way one views the world on end. Man's stewardship of animals is examined, and exposed - warts and all. Our failings and our successes, painted in loving strokes on the canvas that becomes one of the best books I've ever read. I will never look at animals the same again. I bet you don't either.

She gives very detailed information on the history of IGs, different personalities and problems (both behavioral and health wise) you might run into, and great training and healthcare tips, along with information needed if you decide you have interest in showing a dog. It's helped us work well with our new IG. Very educational, and it's a recommended read by the Italian Greyhound Club of America [...].

This is a wonderfully complete and detailed book, written by a person who knows iggies. If you are thinking of getting an IG or have one or more of the little precious furry creatures, then this is a must book. It is not a fancy book with glossy pages full of color photos. But it does have a good deal of photos, mostly black and white, of a number of IGs. Most of the photos are of iggies being shown at a dog show, but many many others of the precious sighthounds in all types of places, doing a lot of different things.
There are chapter after chapter of interesting discussions on a wide variety of issues and events that could occur during the life of an Italian Greyhound. IG parents are a special group of individuals - you have to be to live with an iggy or two or three or more. They are like potato chips - you can't have just one.

Once again, Sandra Glahn has outdone herself. Her insights are outstanding, and the questions she provides in this study provoke further insight from her readers. Like others in the series this may used individually or with groups. Her inclusion of Scripture, including that which is relevant other than the book of Judges alone, adds the element of convenience.

Sandra Glahn's new Coffee Cup Bible Studies are a delight! Sandra brings out interesting details and insights in this book. The day divisions and chapters seem very workable for today's busy woman, and having the scripture text included in the book is very convenient...D.J.Martin, Ladies' Bible Study Teacher.

I'm just finishing up this study and am looking forward to getting my hands on the rest of the series! With three young children at home, finding time to stay consistently in my Bible is a challenge. But Sandra's style keeps me eagerly seeking to carve out time in the Word on a regular basis. Daily lessons are short enough to feel "doable," yet deep enough to satisfy my thirsty soul. With Scripture text included in the easy study format, this book is not only fascinating but also portable enough to fit it into my lifestyle wherever rare moments of quiet occur. Great study for seasoned Believers or those newly exploring Faith!

For the woman who is desires a more in-depth study in the Word of God (specifically the book of Judges), but with practical/devotional applications--look no further! In a book of the Bible where failure to do the right thing is commonplace, Sandra's insightful commentary challenges the reader's own personal relationship with God. The book is perfect for small a group of women who want to start a Bible study, a Sunday School class, or just for the individual wanting to gain a further understanding into Judges. You will be blessed.

What a tremendous resource Java with the Judges is! I'd read through Judges a bit perplexed, thankful to study the book in depth through the lenses of Glahn's impeccable research and warm writing style. I'm forever thankful for her insights, particularly this: "Even our flaws can't thwart God's purposes." She presents the judges as flawed, earthy folk and rightly points out God's sovereignty and power, despite loving a people prone to stray. I particularly enjoyed Glahn's discussion of women, how she debunks some common myths and elevates women in the process. An overall refreshing Bible study!

Image is everything right? But is hard to stick a dollar sign on to "Image" or better yet "Brand". Detailed case studies of real world products help put things in perspective. Some of the early choices of companies like Coke and Nike have really helped maintain the integrity of the brand through the test of time. By using brands that are all around us, Kellogg on Branding brings it all to your doorstep. I recommend this book to marketing/advertising industry people just as much to fans of books like "The Tipping Point" and The Long Tail.".

Branding is so powerful that it touches upon more disciplines than other branches of marketing. Figuring out why branding works and where it might go in the future requires insights from several fields, including anthropology, advertising, management and psychology. Thus, this anthology takes the perfect approach to presenting the latest information about branding. A single author would have difficulty keeping up with so much multidisciplinary research. This worthwhile book ranges from the basic to the esoteric, and from the practical to the theoretical. It offers numerous case studies and advice about brand building in particular industries; it also includes an interesting discussion of the anthropology of branding. We recommend this book to marketing managers: Even experienced, knowledgeable branding practitioners are likely to encounter new ideas and strategies in these pages.

I picked up "Kellogg on Branding" from Amazon because my company was embarking on a branding exercise. As part of the team, I wanted to get well-versed in the theoretical and practical implications of branding and brand management. Little did I realize that I have picked up a gem.
First and foremost, this is an academic book, some of which may cause a reader to gloss over, especially if they are just looking for easy bullet point overviews. Nonetheless, I found this to be a goldmine of information.
A collection of articles and research by some of the by faculty at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University covering a range of issues. Specifically, the book covers branding concepts in the first three chapters, strategies for building and leveraging brands, strategy to implimentation, and branding insights.
I found the last chapters (14 through 20) to be the most interesting as they were written by senior executives at firms. Whether it was a discussion on there individual companies leveraged their brand, to using their brand internally, it was the more "Practical" section of the book.
Thats not to diminish the other sections of the book. In one collection we have a guide for branding in the tech sector, to managing a brand portfolio, to design and positioning. Each with a wealth of information for anyone looking at their own companies and trying to make sense of branding, brand strategy and brand management.
Needless to say, this volume armed me quite well for our branding initiatives.
Again, this is a detailed book, and not a gloss over. If you can read this with the attention to detail "Kellogg on Branding" offers, then you will be well rewarded. If not, you may want to look elsewhere.
Regardless, I highly recommend.

Melanie's adventures will make you laugh out loud, shake your head in disbelief and occasionally wipe a tear.
When reading, I went to exotic places, tasted exotic foods (among them delicious "mud" pie) and enjoyed many adventures. God bless her Saint of a mother, who taught her the lessons to be learned from her adventurous nature. If Melanie had not been the 5th and last child, she "might" have been the 1st and last! She was quite the little spitfire then and is now a beautiful, intelligent, caring woman - with beautiful teeth! And I am truly blessed to have her as a friend.
This book can be read to children, enjoyed by adults and given as very special gifts.
Be sure to experience Ladybug's world - you will not be sorry.
I have only one criticism of this book - it simply ended too soon.
Now waiting "patiently" for book #2!

Ladybug is a whimsical delightful little book. Written from a child's point of view but with a grown-up twist - it is about all the things that happen when growing up -- though most of these tales are in a foreign land and are so entertaining and quite surprising. Its not your average short story book. More delightful and entertaining as you learn things about cultures and plants and things you wouldn't even imagine! Its a great entertaining read for adults and delightful for the children - especially at story time. All in all, check out this book, you are sure to be delighted with a tale or two!

Disclaimer: The author of this wonderful little book is a friend, but I learned more of her background by reading these autobiographical snippets of her childhood spent living outside the U.S. There are some painful lessons learned, such as how a trusting little girl discovers prejudice only when she returns to the capital of our own country. Chapters are easily read as Melanie breaks each into different story lines. This book will appeal to both adults and children. I am hoping the children in my family will be inspired to read further about the exotic locations in these poignant stories.

I loved it! I would highly recommend this book for children or adults. Great insights from such an intelligent, adventurous and brave little girl. It was very discouraging that the first taste of prejudice she experienced was just a few miles from where I live. But tales of her life in Africa were great reading. This would be a perfect gift!

I like the book but the back and forth with the previous books makes it little bit borring because if you already read the previous book you know what happened and it is not relevant to the new book. Even if you have not read the previous book it could do without the inserts or comments from it. Other than that I love the book and the stories. I actually want to meet this doctor.

GRACIAS DR. WEISS!!!
