First come, first served.5.09207861772685662005-04-22Unshrouds the mystery with facts, not speculationsThe Life, Legend, and Madness offers an in-depth view into the secretive life of Howard Hughes. Unbiased in its writing, the book focuses on all of Hughes accomplishments and successes, as well as some of the darker aspects of his life. After reading this book, one can really see that Hughes is one of the few "larger than life" characters that ever lived.

Hughes played an integral role in shaping this country, a role unknown to many of today's younger generations. Donald Barlett and James Steele do an amazing job detailing both his accomplishments and private life. Some of his endeavors are less obvious today than others, such as helping transform Las Vegas into the resort town we know today. Many people are unfamiliar with the Hughes Medical Institute or the creations from the Hughes Aircraft Company. Although the book does show his odd lifestyle behind the darkened windows and closed doors, it is fair in that it also accurately focuses on his important business dealings.

The popular movie "The Aviator" seems to be scripted largely from the first half of this book. To fully appreciate the movie, I recommend reading this particular book first. Not only will it help clarify references that may slip by in the movie, but this book shows that Hughes was much more than a movie producer who flirted with Hollywood's divas of the day. He was a master engineer, expert businessman, and defender of Democracy (he furiously fought Communists). Innovative people like Hughes is what America is all about.
0786177268513152004-11-30Excellent Insight into the Life and Empire of Howard HughesAfter reading other books on Howard Hughes, I thought this book would be a waste of my time since I'd "read everything else" but little did I know that this book went into such detail of his life, exposing in great detail specifics that other books briefly mentioned.0786177268526302004-06-05Howard Hughes, NakedThe story of Howard Hughes, told superbly in this classic bio, is simply magnetic. How else could you describe a tale that begins with young Howard Robard Hughes, Jr. being born into one of Texas's wealthiest oil families (his father's company, Hughes Tool Company, held a virtual monopoly on drill-bits for many years), moving to Califoria to become a movie mogul, pioneering aviation, heading TWA, and then slipping into degenerative obsessive madness that rendered him completely in the hands of his manipulative underlings. Thus in this book we confront both the young, energetic Hughes (romantically linked to both Jane Russell and Katharine Hepburn) and the old, sick hughes - a nudist who left his hair and fingernails uncut for years, chronicly addicted to codeine, flitting between vacuum-sealed hotel rooms in diffent countries (Bahamas, Nicaragua, Toronto, London, etc.), yet whose name continued to command terror and respect among presidents and governors.
As I read this book, there were many Hughes habits that I found deeply endearing, even as the weird details mounted. How can you not like a guy who, in the pre-VCR era, decided to buy the local Nevada TV station, just so they'd play the movies he wanted? Who - upon installing his home entertainment system - had an obsessive-compulsive need to watch the epic 1968 thriller "Ice Station Zebra" over and over again? (It's a good movie, after all.) Who bought up half of the real estate of Nevada in a doomed expectation of a world gold shortage? Or who lent his name to the ocean-dredging vessel, Glomar Explorer, to aid the CIA's covert attempts to refloat a Soviet sub? And there was something genuinely visionary about the way he built his aircraft and electronics empires. Indeed, despite the piles of carefully-compiled evidence of financial disasters at TWA, RKO, Air West and Summa Corporation, somehow I want to believe that Hughes was not the bungling sicko that emerges from these pages, but so what if he was, the story remains magnificent.
As a postscript, every time you see a DirectTV advertisement, remember that it used to be a Hughes company.0786177268537422003-05-01The Demise of an EmpireDonald Bartlett and James Steel's book, "Empire: The Life, Legend, and Madness of Howard Hughes" is an excellent example of journalistic reporting converted into book form; the book is simply fascinating to read. The authors accomplish the gargantuan task of separating fact from fiction in the very complex life of Howard Hughes. "Empire" is impeccably researched and documented; It is a bona fide biography that reads more like fiction than real life-such was the world of Howard Hughes.

"Empire" traces the rise and tragic fall of Howard Hughes; a man who wore many hats, he was an aviator, Hollywood movie producer, Las Vegas hotel/casino owner ... and a recluse. For one brief shining moment, Hughes was considered one of America's premier aviators, breaking flying records, but then falling out of grace with government and the aviation industry for breaking contract deadlines. In the long run, Howard Hughes would become a grand failure in the world of big business.

Bartlett and Steel show the reader a man who had everything to live for, good looks, fame, fortune, power and prestige, but he was unable to triumph over his social and physical phobias that led to psychological, emotional, and physical illnesses and to his final descent into the dwellings of the insane. Hughes' deep mistrust of all people-even family, worked against him and led to his demise and the lose of his billion dollar empire by the very people whose job it was to safeguard him and his empire.

By the time I finished reading "Empire: The Life, Legend, and Madness of Howard Hughes, I was much more accepting of my status as a non wealthy individual. Although Howard Hughes had everything a man could possibly wish for, he was underprivileged in peace of mind.... The authors do a superb job in separating fact from myth in the life of Howard Hughes. The book is worth reading.
0786177268512142001-07-24The best book on Howard Hughes"Empire: The Life, Legend, and Madness of Howard Hughes" is indeed an empire within itself. This book manages to expose the life of a very seceretive and private man of power who lived in his own unique way in the world. An incredible book about an incredible man...Howard Hughes lived one of the greatest, most heroic, misunderstood, mysterious, bizarre, and tragic lives in American history. In this brilliantly documented biography, the mythology that surrounded that life is disentangled from the truth. Hughes had always been different. Certainly his riches set him apart, but he was also tough. Orphaned and a millionaire at eighteen, Hughes repudiated his relatives, seized control of the Hughes Tool Company, the linchpin of his fortune, and went on to become a flamboyant movie producer, holder of many world aviation records, principal owner of Trans World Airlines, a critically important defense contractor, Hollywood's most pursued and elusive bachelor, and partner of the United States government. This is an epic biography of an epic figure who bestrode the world like a colossus yet could not master himself.Though he rose to fame after a record-setting flight around the world and the construction of an unprecedented fleet of airplanes, aerospace industry icon Howard Hughes wasted millions of dollars in production, swindled taxpayers through self-serving philanthropy projects and regularly lied to stockholders. In his spare time he worked for Joe McCarthy, was an avid supporter of segregation and nearly destroyed himself through drugs. In this biography of Hughes, authors David Barlett and James Steele reveal the dark, often unlawful, existence that can accompany an American success story.B000LSA8SAHoward Hughes: The Untold Story0767919343Citizen Hughes : The Power, the Money and the Madness0312329970Howard Hughes: The Secret Life1413408753The Asylum of Howard HughesB0001PBYGIHughes: The Private Diaries, Memos and Letters2375General2Biographies & Memoirs1000Subjects283155Books2420Business2419Professionals & Academics2Biographies & Memoirs1000Subjects283155Books886494Rich & Famous2396Leaders & Notable People2Biographies & Memoirs1000Subjects283155Books917054Hughes, Howard916944( H )916928People, A-Z2Biographies & Memoirs1000Subjects283155Books2612General3Business & Investing1000Subjects283155Books69725Biographies & Memoirs69724Books on CD368395011Audiobooks504358Formats251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books1038346General69726Business69724Books on CD368395011Audiobooks504358Formats251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books15853961General69724Books on CD368395011Audiobooks504358Formats251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books618076011Books on CD618075011Audiobooks618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books0552110280http://www.amazon.com/Fair-Blows-Wind-Louis-LAmour/dp/0552110280%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D0552110280Louis L'AmourPaperback9780552110280Import0552110280EnglishEnglishCorgi Childrens288Book1979-04-27Corgi ChildrensCorgi ChildrensFair Blows the Wind111600USD$6.000100005.09205521102805002008-04-07Well worth itFor the first few pages, perhaps the first chapter and a small way into the second, I found this a difficult read. It is my policy, however, to read at least the first 100 pages of a book, and then decide whether to read on. I am very glad I did! This is a fine tale of a boy growing into adulthood, and all the trials he faced. It rings true with what I know of the period, and is a wonderful example of good literature. It is not a light read, but it is certainly worth reading, if you are interested in the period, sword play, sailing, history, or a good tale. Enjoy!05521102805002006-11-10Early exploration of AmericaI am a die hard Lamour fan having read all of his novels (several times).

I bought this novel as it puts a lot of history and philosophy of the early exploration of America in a good context. You will get a good feel for life in England during the early days when England, Spain and France were fighting over imagined gold.

I bought this for my 14 year old son so he would learn the times of early exploration really were and the forces in play at the time.05521102805112006-09-20have read it a million times!!!louis lamour is easily my favoritest author - and this is my favoritest book of his.

superlative action, adventure swashbuckler.

the story of an irish prince who becomes a fugitive, becomes the greatest swordsman of his time and wins back what is his by right.

action, adventure, romance, a little bit of history, mystery, drama, sentiment, earthy philosophy - this book has it all!

pity that lamour never got to writing a sequel to it - though apparently he did desire to do one.05521102805662003-07-07My Personal FavoriteMy grandfather collected and owned every original Lous L'Amour western novel. When I was 15 he passed the collection onto me. While this is not the best example of L'Amour's work it is certinaly my favorite. Another favorite of mine is "Last of the Breed", but "Fair Blows the Wind" is the book that I come back to read over and over time and again. I would recommend this book to anyone. No book collection is complete without this.05521102805112002-10-22A Very good read!!I thought that this book was very well written. I really liked the way Lamor described the fight scenes and the characters in extreme detail. This really gave me the idea of what it was like in those times. People made a lot of money through trade just like Chantry. If you like the art of fencing, this book is for you.0553280406The Walking Drum0553280422Last of the Breed0553247662Westward the Tide055324762XHanging Woman Creek0553280813Down the Long Hills10177Historical10134Genre Fiction17Literature & Fiction1000Subjects283155Books400272011Paperback394184011Mass Market401237011Trade394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books0618024956http://www.amazon.com/Field-Hummingbirds-America-Peterson-Guides/dp/0618024956%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D0618024956817991http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51P6MQQTKAL._SL75_.jpg7546http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51P6MQQTKAL._SL160_.jpg16099http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51P6MQQTKAL.jpg475294Sheri L. This book is working out very well for us so far. Already we have learned that what appeared to be a 'baby' hummingbird with the naked eye, was actually a moth via binoculars and the moth was shown in the book~! The book is well made, very nice pictures, small enough to leave on a kitchen counter or drawer for easy access and user friendly. I recommend this book for anyone looking to learn about Hummingbirds.06180249565002008-08-05well photographed and handsomly laid out bookGreat book for learning about these little birds and identifying them. The photographs are nice and help in the identification process along with the wealth of additional information. This book helped me identify more species south of Tucson when I went to photograph and videotape the 10 different varieties near the Mexican border.06180249565332007-07-04ADD THIS ONE TO YOUR BACKPACK!As stated, it is difficult to go wrong with and of the Peterson Field Guides. This work is certainly no exception. Do be warned though, if you are a beginning birder, that NO field guide can meet all needs. This guide, like others, must be supplemented with as many different guides as possible. In this case, I might recommend Howell's wonderful work.

That being said, you certainly need to add this one to your collection. This work covers the thirty or so species found in the U.S. along with several that may or may not be seen. The range maps are great, but again, another warning to the newcomer to this wonderful pastime. The range of many of birds found in the U.S. in changing, almost at a yearly rate. We can go on forever as to why this is occurring, but it never-the-less is. As the natural habitat of these amazing creatures is shrinking, so are the bird populations.

The photographs in this book are a bit small and the quality is not what I would like, but the photographs are quite adequate, particularly if they are supplemented with other guides. The information found in the text is quite informative and accurate, as are the range maps, as far as we know (see above paragraph). There is much good information in this book concerning behavior, nesting habits and feeding patterns. This is certainly a book I would not want to be without when out in the field specifically looking for this particular family of birds. Recommend this one highly.
06180249565002007-05-13Hummingbirds - one of my passions....Great book to teach us how to correctly identify hummingbird species. I can now identify several species easily & that's fun with about 30 some birds being fed by me in my garden. Great source of information.06180249565002007-01-10A Field Guide to Hummingbirds of North America (Peterson Field Guides)Excellent Guide to Hummingbirds! I bought the book for my sister's birthday. She loves it!Covering 31 North American species, with more than 250 color photos and 33 maps, this is the most comprehensive field guide to hummingbirds. Introductory chapters cover the natural history of hummingbirds, ways to attract and feed them, and major hot spots in the United States and Canada for observing these fascinating birds. The 31 color plates illustrate 28 species, 7 hybrid combinations, 3 forms of albinism, and 4 species of sphinx moths often mistaken for hummingbirds. Species accounts provide in-depth information on plumage, molt, songs and calls, wing sounds, similar species, behavior, habitat, distribution, taxonomy, and conservation concerns. Detailed, up-to-date range maps show breeding, non-breeding, and year-round distribution, migration routes, and records outside expected areas of occurrence. For a few widespread migratory species, separate maps illustrate expected spring arrival dates.0316817155Stokes Hummingbird Book : The Complete Guide to Attracting, Identifying, and Enjoying Hummingbirds0691116032Hummingbirds of North America: The Photographic Guide1886679002The Secret Lives of Hummingbirds0793835801Attracting and Feeding Hummingbirds (T.F.H. Clocking in a 242 pp. (inclusive of Notes), "Finding a Fallen Hero" is a real page-turner, one easily gotten through even by a slow reader like this reviewer in one sitting. Not only is the story told engagingly (we'll come back to this shortly), but Korkuc is also a talented writer who conveys his prose with an economy of words. Too many historical authors - even some of the better ones - get distracted with side stories and irrelevant facts, not so with Korkuc. It's refreshing to read a book centered on happenings of the Second World War that stays on track and is contained but still grows the reader in having read it.

The basic story told in "Finding a Fallen Hero" is that of Staff Sgt. Anthony (Tony) Joseph Korkuc's (the author's uncle) final flight as a ball turret gunner in a B-17 Flying Fortress (42-37786; unnamed) in the 532nd Bomb Squadron/381st Bomb Group. Tony Korkuc was KIA near Willmandingen, Germany on 25 Feb 1944 while returning from a bombing run to Augsburg, Germany. Although initially buried in Willmandingen, his remains were later relocated to the U.S. Military Cemetery in Saint-Avold, France, and finally interned in a group plot with three other men in Arlington National Cemetery (Virginia). While the story itself is relative straightforward, the path taken by Bob Korkuc to bring his uncle's story to life was far from effortless and took several years of diligent research and some personal discomfort to accomplish. The author's trek to discover the why's and how's surrounding his uncles death and multiple internments began simple enough on a trip to Arlington National Cemetery with his father in 1995 when the latter asked: "I wonder how Tony's remains got from Germany to Arlington?" With this simple question Bob Korkuc embarked on an adventure of investigation and discovery that was to finally bring peace and closure to a long mystery, both for the Korkuc family and possibly the families of the other five men of Staff Sgt. Korkuc's flight who perished that winter day over enemy territory. Thankfully for the reader Bob Korkuc has documented this journey for us to enjoy.

"Finding a Fallen Hero" is much more than a piece of Second World War non-fiction: it's a detective story that reads like an Arthur Conan Doyle novel; a tale of strong brothers-in-arms camaraderie; a story of self- and familial discovery; and a touching account of rememberance and healing of a handful of men who gave much of their youth in defense of their country. Few books this reviewer has read in the WWII genre ever come close to touching so many facets of life then and now. "Finding a Fallen Hero" should appeal to a broad swath of readers, not just those interested in history. Moreover, Korkuc shares with the reader how he went through his process of discovery and exposition in such a way that others can take similar treks if mysteries in need of solving exist in their family histories. Thanks Bob for your insights and thoughtfulness!

In his researching and writing of "Finding a Fallen Hero" Korkuc appears to have found what he was looking for and in doing so has given us insight into his life, his family and glimpses of war in the air over Germany during the Second World War. This reviewer cannot recommend this book highly enough - 5 HUGE stars, two thumbs up.
08061389205002008-07-13Finding A Fallen Hero - IncredibleI am not a huge history buff, but I do enjoy learning about the past and the effects on the people of the time. After reading this book, I felt like I was the one who tracked down the facts and met the people in this book. The author did an amazing job describing not only his path to locate facts and data, but the individuals that were affected by this piece of history. It was a great read and I'd recommend anyone who is interested in either WWII, the people of the time or trying to locate a past individual involved in the military to read this book.08061389205002008-07-12This search opens a lot of doors to anyone who has lost a service manOn a B-17, Flying Fortress, the hottest hot seat aboard was usually filled by the smallest member of the crew. That would be the ball turret Gunner. On this particular B-17, on his last mission, on February 25, 1944, was a ball turret gunner, Anthony "Tony" Korkuc, who at 27, was the oldest man in the crew of ten. His was the squadron's only plane shot down that day.

He is reported missing in action. It wasn't until 1995 he was reported to be interred in Arlington National Cemetery.

This is the story of Tony Korkuc, as seen through the eyes of his curious nephew, Bob Korkuc who went on a seven year quest to find what happened to Uncle Tony.

The book is a fine blend of World War ll combat in the air, leading up to Tony's death and the education and growth of his nephew, who learned compassion and understanding while interviewing the various survivors of the flight. Both Tony and Bob grew in stature. In a manner Bob finished Tony's last mission.

This search opens a lot of doors to anyone who has lost a service man. There are fewer veterans to interview, but the trail is still inviting, and Bob Korkuc points the way.

Richard N. Larsen
Reviewer
08061389205002008-07-03The perfect tribute to a fallen warrior Few books are done this well.

This is an example of superb reporting, the painstaking attention to meticulous detail to create a great story that soars above any slips in writing or inattention in editing.

I've flown in a B-17, roaming from the nose to the waist gun positions. I didn't have the nerve to get into the ball turret or the tail gun position. On the ground, a B-17 looks huge; inside, it's as cramped as a coffin. Unlike a coffin, a B-17 has no smooth edges or soft surfaces; it's as raw an airplane as was ever made.

Crew members must have felt they were on a ducking chair at a county fair, being blasted by unseen shotgunners. There's nowhere to duck, nowhere to hide, nowhere to run for shelter or safety. Korkuc does a great job explaining the nature and nerve of those who did mission after mission.

Thus he describes the raw guts of war. But the gem of his book is his seven-year search through official records and sometimes still shaken memories of airmen and civilians in Germany and the U.S. about the fate of the specific B-17 on which his uncle served and died. This is Ken Burns style of reporting at its very best.

It's a superb story, something almost never seen in today's news reports. It's great history; we already know who won the war, this explains what it took to win. It provides a very human touch to otherwise often impersonal records.

If I were teaching journalism (or history), this book would be mandatory reading. Students would need an "A" to graduate as a reporter or history major. This is as good as it gets, for history or news reporting.

One minor point: If I were editing, I'd want to know how anyone would know a person's final thoughts just moments before death. It's a minor glitch, one I've seen even seasoned journalists make. Nonetheless, Korkuc makes it sound believable because of the detail he gathered.

To sum up, seldom has a better tribute ever been written about the victims of war.

There's a good reason it's received unanimous (as of July 4) reviews -- they are well earned and deserved.

Korkuc tells a beautiful story.

08061389205132008-06-05Research and poetry go hand-in-handYou might read the last chapter of Bob Korkuc's book, Finding a Fallen Hero, and think 'but how does he know? What gives him the right?' The right, that is, to re-create the last day and last minutes of the crew of his uncle's B-17 Flying Fortress, as it goes down in flames over Germany in 1944. But aside from his disclaimer, that this is his own "dramatic portrayal," he has done the work and he has earned the right. Years of exhaustive research, correspondence with surviving crewmembers and their relatives, government records studied, and personal interviews, have brought him as close as anyone could be to the last moments of that plane and that bomber crew. He has taken all the research, all the facts, and masterfully tempered them with poetry . . . his take-off point is a poem written after the war by one of the surviving crew members who was haunted by the deaths of his crewmates. But Korkuc generates his own poetry in his re-creation of the last day. He does it with such sensitivity, such a light touch in the chaos of the plane's final minutes, that if I were a family member of one who died, I believe my overwhelming reaction would be "thank you. . . . thank you for that gift." The research detailed in the twelve chapters that precede that last poetic chapter must have been daunting to do . . . and can sometimes be daunting to read. But Korkuc ties it all together in such a moving way that you can't help but feel the poignancy of those lost lives, and the relevancy to what's happening in the world today. Finding a Fallen Hero is a compelling story that blends a wartime drama with a primer on specialized research. Author Bob Korkuc initially set out to learn how his Uncle Tony came to rest at Arlington. In the process, he also unraveled the mystery of what occurred over the skies of Germany half a century ago.
Korkuc dug up military documents and private letters and interviewed people in both the United States and Germany. He tracked down surviving crewmembers and even found the brother of the Luftwaffe pilot who downed the B-17. Dozens of photographs help readers envision both Tony Korkuc's fateful flight and his nephew's dogged search for the truth.
A gripping chronicle of exhaustive research, Finding a Fallen Hero will strike a chord with any reader who has lost a family member to war. And it will inspire others to satisfy their own unanswered questions.0743235452Masters of the Air: America's Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany1932033858MAGNIFICENT DISASTER: The Failure of the Market Garden, The Arnhem Operation, September 1944B001E96KK0Escape from the Deep: A Legendary Submarine and Her Courageous Crew1591145112Contrails Over the Mojave: The Golden Age of Jet Flight Testing at Edwards Air Force Base1932033882KORSUN POCKET, THE: The Encirclement and Breakout of a German Army in the East, 19442393General2376Historical2Biographies & Memoirs1000Subjects283155Books2424Military & Spies2419Professionals & Academics2Biographies & Memoirs1000Subjects283155Books886496General465244Military2396Leaders & Notable People2Biographies & Memoirs1000Subjects283155Books5014General5011Military9History1000Subjects283155Books465308General5031World War II5011Military9History1000Subjects283155Books394181011Hardcover394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books684270011Military468230History468206Humanities465600New & Used Textbooks251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books712989011General AAS468230History468206Humanities465600New & Used Textbooks251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books712982011General AAS465600New & Used Textbooks251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books713014011General AAS319654011Qualifying Textbooks251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155BooksB0007K5ZSKhttp://www.amazon.com/Flight-Arras-Penguin-modern-classics/dp/B0007K5ZSK%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB0007K5ZSKAntoine de Saint-ExupéryUnknown BindingEnglishEnglishPenguin Books168Book1961Penguin BooksPenguin BooksFlight to Arras (Penguin modern classics)371USD$3.711995USD$19.950110005.092B0007K5ZSK5112008-06-13One of The Great BooksA unique blend of introspection, philosophy, WWII adventure, and aviation.

In this autobiogrpahical tale, Antoine de Saint-Exupery ruminates at length upon the situation of men within mankind, France's gallant but failing war effort, and the general context of a life lived meaningfully. He includes relationship to God. He provides specific illustrations within the context of his occupation as a pilot in the French air corps. AND . . . incredibly, he narrates most of this story while at the controls of a French military reconnaisance aircraft on a seemingly hopeless mission to Arras and back.

As St-Ex is wont to do, he flits back and forth between his reflections on life, and the current situation piloting the aircraft. The effect in fascinating, dealing with his inner thoughts while on this hopeless mission, for example describing his feeling of old age as he starves for oxygen at high altitude, fighting against his frozen controls. There is tense combat, described at one point as, flying into a "wall of brass".

On a few occasions the heavy introspection came close to losing me. I suspect that the translation from the French contributed to this, although the Lewis Galantiere translation that I read was generally nicely done.

Great writing . . . adventure . . . thoughtfulness . . . history. Does he make it back to home base? I won't ruin it for you. His writing indicates that in a way, he "found himself" while on this sortie. I will add that, as recorded in history, Saint-Exupery died when his P-38 reconnaisance plane went down in 1943, returning from a mission. B0007K5ZSK5112007-09-01Itself princelyHow can an author do better than "The Little Prince"? He can't. And once the dull reader--myself--accepts that, Saint-Exupery's other wonderful books become what they are meant to be: special gifts from a memorable writer.
Read "Flight to Arras" to learn about the nature of warfare, the nature of defeat and, in the midst of all this overwhelming distress, the importance of the individual.B0007K5ZSK5332007-05-10Difficult to Read -- Had to be in the right place, first. It took more than one try for me to really get into Flight to Arras. Saint-Exupery is not the easiest of writers to follow, despite a superb writing style, because of being so deep into philosophy. And, once I did finally reach the point of being ready for this book, I was astounded. Absolutely! As always, St-Exupery taught me So Much.

To anyone who likes Saint-Exupery and wants to read this, I would say: Go for it. Don't force yourself through it, though. Wait until you're really at the place where this book will take to you, on its own.
B0007K5ZSK5552004-09-05excellent philosophy and a look at a slice of history the book is st.-ex's thoughts and reflections as he flies a suicide recon mission during WW2. it is not an action novel, but does have some exiting parts to it. it is a thoughtful look at life. the book is not just an interesting look into the mind of someone on a doomed mission, but is motivating, thougth provoking and insightful, and has some great lines to live by. i liked it better than his other book wind, sand and stars, and my copy is all marked up and highlighted and i refer back to it often. i would reccommend this book without hesitation. B0007K5ZSK5442001-12-03What's the point? In this autobiographical story, Saint-Ex tells of the already lost battle he found himself in during 1940 in desperate, war-torn France. He and his crew get sent on a hopeless reconnoissance flight mission over the burning City of Arras. Faced with almost certain imminent death, he is brought to the point of where he can't help but ask himself: "Where's the sense in all this? What am I doing? Why am I doing this?" And as we live through the harrowing experience with him, he lets us see into his heart and mind as he tries to find some answers.. What he comes up with is defined by solid thought resulting from acute observation (Metaphysics my foot!) of man and mankind, certainly more poignant now than ever and therefore surely timeless... And since it's Saint-Ex who relates all this in his unique humble-but-not-so-humble and profoundly human style, this is not only an exciting read about a dangerous time, but it is infused with charme and humour like some superb wine with its unique flavour and aroma. A great little book by a great man.A recollection of the shattering days during World War II when, though the fall of France was imminent, a handful of French pilots continued to fight on against the Germans. As next of kins, their wives must now take on the duties. Problem is that these four redheads (well, one is blonde and colors her hair red) have absolutely no clue how to do the jobs! Satan wants to retire, but cannot until she finds someone else to take over her position. (Yes, Satan is female. No man can be bitchy enough to do the job well. Trust me on this.) So Satan not only hands the four women their new duties, but also hands over a contest. Whichever of them does the best job in their new positions will have Satan's job and all its perks when she retires.

(First story is War's, written by Linda L. Donahue.) Bunny is the new "War". Since Bunny is at a disadvantage with the other ladies, Satan gives her a bit of help in the form of an unlimited expense account and a bit of advice: No matter how it starts, no matter how it ends, a war is a war. All you've gotta do is start something. So Bunny goes Earthside and crashes the UN Security Council Meeting in progress. Unfortunately, Hell's accountants are less than pleased with the results.

(Second story is Death's, written by Rhonda Eudaly.) Zoe is the new "Death". If nothing else, Zoe is the busiest of the four. She has to show up, on schedule, to collect the dead. When she fails to show up to a huge car wreck, everyone (miraculously) survives! To say that the Grim Reaper, Zoe's Chief Minion, is upset is putting it lightly. So Zoe becomes determined to get better and win Satan's job! She is sick to death (pardon the bad pun) of having to deal with dead people. Reaper can have the job once she gets Satan's office!

(Third story is Plague's, written by Dusty Rainbolt.) Butterflye Plague-Pestilence is the new "Plague". She had been an attorney back when she was actually alive. So you would think that Butterflye would have read the fine print on her document before marrying Ossy. Alas, she did not. To make matters worse for her, Butterflye has a fear of bugs! Every time a cockroach rubs against Butterflye's leg in a show of affection, she cringes! This gives her extra motivation in winning the contest. But it is hard to get things done when her minions keep quoting rules and regulations from the various Unions they belong to. She finally decides to create a modern day plague, a computer virus unlike any before. The results thrill Bill Gates!

(Now comes Famine's tale, written by Julia S. Mandala.) Sara Lee is the new "Famine". She never had a weight problem until she became Famine. Now she has constant hunger pains and, if she is Earthside, everything she touches turns to dust. Sara Lee's minion is a too perky and cute little girl named Debbie who is constantly handing Sara Lee sugary snacks. It seems that every time Sara Lee comes up with an idea to spread famine Earthside, it backfires. Worse, often the backfires seem to HELP the other three Horsewomen.

***** I found this to be an over-the-top comedy with the quirky flavor of a Mel Brooks film. I highly enjoyed it! There are many pros and cons for this novel though. As for the cons, the book is less than a hundred pages and it is all in fine print. The cover art shows all four women with champagne glasses (and I could tell which woman was which Horsewoman by what is within the glass) but I had to look closely because the black and white photo makes it hard to tell what the item within each glass is! Lastly, this book is not bound by glue. Instead, staples hold it together. Yet the price is still high. As for the pros, each story is so hilarious that I could not help laughing long and loud while enjoying it. The bad puns are so good (pardon my oxymoron pun) that they would make Mel Brooks proud! My husband read the short blurb on the front of this book and told me to be sure to give it to him when I finish reading it. One of my co-workers, who happens to be a huge fan of Mel's, wants it after my husband is finished. The people who asked for it after that were told (nicely, of course) to go get their own copy. Also, if you happen to be lucky enough to know the author/publicist Selina Rosen, then you will enjoy Satan's character. I kept picturing Selina as Satan while reading and was tickled when I later found out that Selina is exactly whom Satan's character was based upon! (Kudos to me!) All-in-all, I highly recommend this short novel to all fans of comedy who are over the age of seventeen. Killer story! (Groan. I did not just say that!) *****

Reviewed by Detra Fitch of Huntress Reviews.18936877085112006-10-27A Wicked Sense of Humor * 4Words cannot begin to describe how funny this book is, I could not put it down! Very much looking forward to the sequel!18936877084112006-09-23The New Face of War --- is Bunny! This chapbook is a marvelous mixture of writing and performance art, with pictures of the writers standing in for pictures of their characters, and working together to meld four fun stories and prologue and epilogue into a terrific short work.

The premise is that the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (who apparently weren't the sharpest tools in the box) died in an accident and the contract binds their widows to take over their husbands' jobs (does it really surprise anyone to learn that Hell has a first-rate legal staff?) And the one who does the best job has the opportunity to take Satan's job while she (again, does it surprise anyone that Satan is a woman?) retires to a little volcanic island.

So the new face of War is Bunny, whose plans, such as they are, tend to be defeated by their own flaws. Butterflye, the new Pestilence-Plague, is businesslike but squeemish, not a happy start for someone whose clothes are constantly emitting an army of bugs. Zoe, the new Death, is the only one who seems to have a real aptitude for her new calling but is almost as squeemish as Butterflye, and Sara Lee is to famine what George Bush is to comedy.

This is a very funny little book. The only problem I had was whether to give the book four or five stars. This little volume did its job -- to entertain the reader -- with verve and panache. On the other hand, writers like Zelazny and Crowley raise the bar for everyone, but I had no problem at all with giving it four stars, not can I disagree with those who gave it five.18936877085222006-09-16A Wild Romp thru HellThis is a fun book. Take four spicy redheads who inadvertently survive the deaths of their hapless husbands and inherit their jobs...as the new Horsemen of the Apocalypse. But Butterfly hates the bugs that come with being Plague-Pestilence, and Sara Lee is not cut out for Famine, Bunny would rather make love than War, and Zoe looks pasty in black...but it's whats expected of Death. What's a girl to do? Scheme for a way to take over the Boss' job. Who will be Satan's successor? Only time will tell.

These four ladies have written a series of intertwining plots that will leave you laughing and thinking that maybe Hell wouldn't be that bad a place...to visit. Spend some time there with them.
18936877085112006-09-16Wicked humor4 Stories all woven into one. Even Hell has rules you can't break! "The Franchise Fraud: How to Protect Yourself Before and After You Invest" is a guide for investors who are contemplating purchasing a franchise. With wound and practical advice on avoiding the pitfalls of the contracts, identifying and establishing your rights, and how to utilize a contract to personal advantage, "The Franchise Fraud" is very highly recommended as essential reading to anyone contemplating the purchase of a franchised business.04712537155002008-08-08The MUST read for those interested in franchising..Mr. Purvin's book is an outstanding review of the history of franchising and the current state of the franchisor/franchisee relationship. It is a must read for anyone involved in the business of franchising, particularly those who are considering investment in a franchise system.
It's words ring truer today than when they were first published over a decade ago.

04712537155112007-05-28The dark side of franchising revealedI am researching some business opportunities, including franchising. I was put off by some of the terms of the franchise agreements that I had reviewed, and so ordered some books on the subject. "The Franchise Fraud" is a must read for anyone considering "renting" (you don't buy a franchise, they all have a limited term). Mr. Purvin exposes many of the traps and pitfalls that can befall a franchisee when they don't understand what they are getting into. He also debunks many of the rosy statistics about success rates quoted by franchisors. In many cases, the franchise company holds all of the cards, and the franchisee has very few rights under the typical franchising contract.0471253715519202002-07-05Truly outstandingThe most intelligent and well reasoned business book I have read in a long time.
As an aspiring entrepreneur, and like many others, I considered purchasing a franchise as one possible route to business ownership. Not having owned a business previously, I figured this could be a lower risk way to learn about business through the benefit of a pre-existing, "proven" business method. For the price of the franchise, I would enjoy a symbiotic, cooperative relationship with the franchisor, for a cut of my revenues in exchange.
In short, I was prepared to buy into the franchise fraud.
Robert Purvin knows his subject. He spent the better part of his career as an attorney representing franchisors. With so colorful a title, I was expecting a rant against franchises in the broad language of most business books.
I was pleasantly surprised. Mr. Purvin, in summary, details the many ways in which franchisors, well with the law as it currently exists, target and bleed their middle class franchisees. With citation to court cases, government publications, and other authoritative material, the autor picks apart the myth that "95% of franchises are successful". He details the powerful legal and contractual methods through which many franchisors, far from helping and coaching their franchisees, use franchisees' capital to test unproven markets, saturate existing ones and take over the cream of the crop.
Not wanting a single book to shape my opinion, I confirmed with actual franchisees their opinion of the industry. Their complaints read like a checklist from the book. Needless to say, purchasing a franchise has sunk to the lower rungs of my list of opportunities.
Don't get ripped off. We used this book to identify a luna moth and a douglas squirrel within days of arriving in Washington. Although not as thorough as a field guide, the format makes it very accessible (and therefore more likely to be read) to children.

I highly recommend both books and look forward to purchasing more in the series.15597168435002007-03-16Great for HomeschoolersThis book has the perfect amount of information for elementary age children; my kids won't put it down. It is the best science resource book that I've found so far- a must have for homeschoolers or kids that are constantly discovering new creatures in the yard. The craft ideas are fun too!15597168434232002-12-19Where's the Turtee's, Mommy? My son is 2 years old and has been looking through this book for months. He likes to see all the animals. I highly recommend it for anyones study into the truth of god and his word.18812291655002008-07-07Wow!Excellent, in depth look at how the Bible was put together and passed down through the ages. Lots of church history included that shows how some of the divisions of Christendom came to be.
This book should be part of every person's reference library.
There are tons of footnotes and references to other works on both biblical and non-biblical subjects.
This book is much more comprehensive than other volumes out there that give a brief overview of biblical development.
Must reading "to give an answer for the hope that lies within you..."

18812291655112008-02-20A Useful Reference Tool for all ChristiansChristians should have a good reference book at arm's length on the subject of bibliology (the study of the nature, origin and reliability of the Bible). A General Introduction to the Bible by Geisler and Nix does a great job in filling this need.

The book is not a small book (it weighs in at a healthy 724 pages). However, it is a great resource. In addition to the chapters themselves, there are plenty of charts, photographs, indexes, a glossary, and a well annotated bibliography.

The book is divided up into four major parts,

Part one: Inspiration of the Bible

Part two: Canonization of the Bible

Part three: Transmission of the Bible

Part four: Translation of the Bible

You will find the authors articulating the traditional evangelical view of verbal plenary inspiration. Their chapters on the claims of inspiration in the Old and New Testaments are particularly helpful. They also interact in some detail with the divergent views on revelation and inspiration.

Canonization tends to be a bit of a blind spot for evangelicals. The authors do a terrific job in articulating a God-centered and historically consistent view of canonization. This is obviously quite helpful in light of the contemporary fascination with Gnostic writings. One quote that is particularly helpful:

"Canonicity is determined by God. A book is not inspired because men made it canonical; it is canonical because God inspired it. It is not the antiquity, authenticity, or religious community that makes a book canonical or authoritative. On the contrary, a book is valuable because it is canonical, and not canonical because it is or was considered valuable. Inspiration determines canonization, and confusion at the point not only dulls the edge of authority but it mistakes the effect (a canonical book) for the cause (inspiration of God). Canonicity is determined or established authoritatively by God; it is merely discovered by man." (p. 221)

A General Introduction to the Bible is a great resource to further equip and encourage you as to the ways and means by which God has given us his world.18812291654562006-02-25Good introduction to the mechanics of the bible we have todayI have had to study this book in depth as part of an MDiv program. It is extremely detailed and covers many things in depth. For example the list of English translations runs to over 30 pages. The authors view the current Holy Bible as the end of a chain involving the divine inspiration of scripture, the collection of inspired autographs (Canonization), the transmission (covering textual criticism) and finally translation.

The take a strong, conservative approach to scripture that should satisfy all bible believing Christians and they give more than enough detail to act apologetically towards any that have doubts as to the accuracy of the information in our hands.

One caveat: the authors are extremely pro modern (lower) textual criticism and the Nestle-Aland text. Those that prefer the Majority or Textus Receptus text and especially those that favor the KJV are likely to find much of the latter two sections to be at variance with thier beliefs. That doesn't mean the work doesn't have value - but some of the blatant denigration of the KJV and Textus Receptus can get a trifle old.

All in all a good book for those interested in how the Word of God came to us today.188122916558102005-04-01Don't be Fooled by the titleThis book claims to be a general introduction of the bible. It is general in the sense in cover everything in general about how the bible was put together. It has nothing to do with the bible doctrines but with the canon.0802428789From God To Us:How We Got Our Bible083081258XThe Canon of Scripture0310255996Christian Beliefs: Twenty Basics Every Christian Should Know0310392810Inerrancy0801031702Encountering the Old Testament: A Christian Survey (Encountering Biblical Studies)408268General21Reference1000Subjects283155Books16233641General12056Bible & Other Sacred Texts22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books394181011Hardcover394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books
