History Comes Alive!

While Alexander the Great is widely known as a general and conqueror, his father, Philip, has remained a footnote. This novel takes that footnote and brings him to life. Philip is presented to us as an intelligent, thoughtful boy who grows to young manhood. But, more importantly, the entire spectrum of life in ancient Greece, the world of Macedonia and the tribulations and ambitions of those who ruled or wished to rule, are brought vividly to life.

These are more than history book characters. That's why I liked the book so much. They spoke and acted like real people. They loved and hated with an intensity that stayed with me.

Historical novels such as this one take history and present it with all the relevance of today, the panaromic view of a movie, and the incisiveness of cafe table gossip.

I highly recommend Bloodlines to anyone who likes history and wants to know more about what came before Alexander's greatness.

So rare to see in historical fiction a work that gets the things right: the historical facts, the social atmosphere, and the characters. But this book achieved in all three...

My original decision to buy the hardcover copy of a previously unknown author was mainly because I am fascinated by Philip and Alexander of Macedon, while there are so many books about the son; the father has been relatively ignored by fiction writers.

This book turned out to be one of the best historical novels I have read (if not THE best). Because of the author's expertise in ancient warfare, I am not surprised to find the vivid account of battles and the military genius of Philip of Macedon. Beyond the military stuff, the book gives excellent description of the geological, religious, economical, and social realities of that era. This book brings me back in time more than 2,000 years ago, among the Macedonians and Greeks, I can feel and understand their environment, their beliefs, their everyday life, and their struggles; each men and women are creatures of their own time but have meanings for eternity. Among them the most vivid character of all is Philip of Macedon. This is the way a historical fiction should be: as accurate as historical textbook while at the same time vivid and fascinating as telling a great story. You feel you are there, as the history unfolds itself...

...The only problem? The book stopped at Alexander's birth. There are twenty more years of great battle and conquering that follows before Philip's death; I really hope this book has a sequel.

An absolutely stunning book, extremely well written and researched about a man who's fame would be obscured by his more famous son.

The detail is impressive but never bogs the story down:the characters are well developed and the whole story is like an amazingly well woven and rich tapestry.

If you like historical fiction and/or ancient history, you'll love this book.

I really hope Mr. Sundell will someday continue the story with another book !

Thomas Sundell's A Bloodline Of Kings is a superbly crafted historical fiction novel set in the fourth century B.C., and is the story of Philip of Macedon, who in many ways forever altered the world of the Greeks and set the stage for his legendary son Alexander. A riveting book of rivalry and kingship vs. Athenian democracy, A Bloodline Of Kings is filled with conflict from between two men to between disparate ways of life. A fascinating and involving novel that absorbs the reader into the clash of culture past, A Bloodline Of Kings is highly recommended reading from beginning to end!

Many overweight and/or obese teenagers and young adults suffer from both low self-esteem and insecurity--I myself (at one time) suffered from this problem. This book's authors have incorporated many of the key elements of Lindora's Lean For Life program which have made it such a success. Written with compassion and insight, it can be a great aid for those teenagers and young adults dealing with obesity and the low self-esteem so often associated with it. My only regret is not having known what I do today (I started the LFL program at the age of 30--after having been obese for years while dealing with yo-yo dieting).

Great book to boost your self-confidence and self-esteem.

i'm really very excited about `bodyPRIDE' simply because i have a teenage boy who was overweight and in a lot of despair about it. we used this book on a daily basis and within 4 months, he dropped several pounds. more important, his self-awareness and self-esteem grew dramatically. now, he's trying out for junior varsity football and is more happy about himself. the plan is easy to do and takes you through it, step by step. your kid can do it with you or, better yet, by him or herself. the language talks to them directly, i think. if you have a problem with your kid, this is a good tool. honestly, art richman

I just love this book. The story from which the book takes its title profoundly affected me the first time I read it: it is the story of an Indian king who has to take part in a quest. This turns out to be an unexpected and thoroughly comprehensive lesson in life and the king emerges from it as a new and wiser person. You will also feel different after reading it. All the stories related in this book are incredibly old but can still connect with the deepest part of our souls. A book to reread.

In the tradition of Johann Jacob Bachhofen and in league with those such as Joseph Campbell, Heinrich Zimmer"s "The King and The Corpse" gets about as good as you will find with respect to comparative mythology. I highly recommend any Jung readers to visit Zimmer's brilliant pages. I also find the melding of Western and Eastern myth systems to be superb. Here is an adventurous path to follow.

Indologist Heinrich Zimmer provides an easy to comprehend text taking four time-out-of-mind-myths and relating them to the esoteric "grail" path! It makes an excellent study for the seeker/student who would wish to follow Wolfgang Von Eckenback's "I learned my ABC's without the use of black magic".

In this writers opinion very few scholars have been suited to blend eastern thought processess into western concepts. Zimmer adeptly crosses this void as if stepping over a puddle of water, making "The King and The Corpse" highly informative and a joy of the heart to ponder.

If you are a seeker on any esoteric path you will find yourself and your 'map' within it's cover.

This volume is a small gem. It contains all 150 Psalms in the Authorised (King James) Version, laid out in spectacular format, as if this were a medieval manuscript cross-bred with a modern printed book. Illuminations appear on every page, as the first letter of each psalm, in addition to the occasional frontpiece from the ornately decorated pages of other manuscripts.

For example, in Psalm 40, whose first word is 'I', the 'I' extends the full length of the page.

I waited patiently for the Lord,
and he inclined unto me,
and heard my cry.

Within the decorations of the 'I' are the scenes from salvation history -- Noah's Ark, the Ten Commandments being given, etc. This particular illumination comes from the Winchester Bible, circa 1175 AD/CE. There is a brief listing at the conclusion giving credits for all the illuminations (alas, some are missing dates, and it is organised alphabetically rather than in page order, making identification a bit of a chore).

In a format under 5 inches x 8 inches, it fits perfectly in the hand for use for personal study and for reading aloud. The binding is very sturdy, and there is a strong cloth cover that resists wear and tear. Every page has colour, and the serif font selection and size make reading easy. I use this for my regular Saturday chaplain service at the retirement home -- the use of the KJV coupled with the interesting illuminations delight the listeners.

There is no commentary here, not even so much as an introduction. The Psalms speak for themselves, together with the beautiful, intricate and often-times cleverly devised illuminations.

This is a lovely book for a gift, for private devotions, and for corporate worship.

I had been looking for a nice psalter to function as a sort of book of hours and this edition of the Book of Psalms was exaclty what I wanted. It's a nice size - only slightly larger than an average paperback - and each psalm begins with a large, illuminated letter taken from a medieval manuscript. These manuscripts are cited in a short, simple form at the very end of the text. Although not all of the citations contain dates, the source manuscripts seem to range from the 10th through the 16th centuries. All in all a beautiful copy of the psalter for anyone who is interested in medieval manuscripts.

The Book of the King was an incredible book that I enjoyed very much. The story line was great and suspenseful.

This book was centered around a battle between Owen and a dragon. Owen prepares throughout the book to fight the dragon. At the end of the book, Owen prevails and the book ends happily ever after.

I felt The Book of the King is comparable to the Harry Potter Series and I would recommend it to any person who likes the fantasy genre.

Trying to add to the church library, I was curious about this series of books. We have found ourselves in a two party camp of those who love Harry Potter and see nothing wrong with the fantasy novels and the others who feel that magic and Christianity don't have a place together.

As the Youth Director I would love to have something to offer my kids and feel good about the options. The Book of the Kings does have some mythical creatures and mysterious people who are not of our human world. There is clear symbolism of The Book of Kings and the Bible and the more the hero reads and knows the stronger he becomes.

The true test came from the kids. They were excited to read and want more novels as soon as I can get them. The parents were happy to see the kids interest in something other than HP. The hero, Owen Reeder, is a loveable character who feels alien in his everday life. Isn't that how every kid feels? It was nice to have a Christian novel to be able to offer to our church kids.

The book holds your interest and is a fun light read. It's nice to have alternatives. If this was a food I would say it was a nice Sugar Free substitute. I will be reading the rest of the series to see what happens to Owen.

There is a nice informal picture of Prince Charles, Princess Diana, and Prince William on the front cover. On the inside cover and the next page is a family tree of Prince William's relatioship within the British Royal Family and with the Royal Families of Europe. The Prince of Wales' coat of arms which Prince William will inherit when he assumes he title.

I have had this book since its publication, I have read it many times, and I have looked at its beautiful pictures so many times. I've really never paid much attention to Prince William's horoscope which was written at the time of his birth by John Naylor, President, Federeration of British Astrologers.

The following is taken from the horoscope : "... Conservative in thought and basically cautious in action, though not without strong prejudices too. These qualities will be combined with an uncanny intuition which will enable him to read minds, anticipate actions.

"...he has a good share of courage, ambition, aggression and physical vitality, quite a temper, and a vein of foolhardiness...

"...Prince William's horoscope has the hallmark of monarchy, whereas his father Prince Charles' lacks this distinctive feature, as did King Edward VIII, the Duke of Windsor's.

"A good I.Q. and a useful academic ability is indicated, but it is an intellect which is imaginative and artistic, which inclines toward idealism and perfectionisim, rather being pragmatic, anaytical or rational...His ready sympathies and his emotionalism make him a romantic, gullible, susceptible to flattery, a 'good fellow.'

"Prince William has an affinity for the sea...Yet, more than most members of the royal family, he has intellectual capabilities. He leans towards being an academic...he could develop an interest in constitutional law...

"Not only because he is a prince, but because he has great charm, is sensitive, sympathetic and responsive as well as being full of vitality, he will wreak havoc with feminine hearts...

" The astrological picture is therefore of an affectionate, sensitive yet lively child, courageous, and possessing a vein af aggression which will flare from time to time. He will need and demand, a lot of affection and attention, being prone to vivid emotional affection and approval.

"...In maturity he will have a vigorous, active dispostion and will be capable of becoming a considerable stateman, combining keen intuition and a feel for public mood and reaction with a useful capacity for leadship...

"...Yet the most interesting indication in regard to Prince William's future occurs in the late 1980's. Both he and his mother, the Princess of Wales, are Cancer subjects...Different but comparable indications occur in the horoscopes of the other principal royals, the Queen, Prince Philip, and Prince Charles. Royal stars suggest that the second half of the 1980's the winds of change will blow through the royal corridors; the younger generation, Prince William amongst them, coming into greater prominence. Happenings in the summer of 1985 will set this trend into motion."

I included these excerpts because I believe that are most interesting in view of all that's happened to Prince William in his short life.

Shortly before dawn a royal-blue Rover police car proceeded out of the gates of Kensington Palace and sped towards Paddington to St. Mary's Hospital. There were only four people in the car - the chauffeur, the personal detective, Prince Charles, and his twenty-year-old wife. Shortly after five o'clock Diana, Princess of Wales, was admitted to the Lido Wing. For once in her twenty-one months in the glare of publicity, there was not a photographer in sight. However, it was not to reamin this way for long. By the time Buckingham Palace released the news of the princess' arrival, there was a continous, steady stream of well wishers and onlookers. By ten o'clock the fist flowers had arrived.

Within the hour after the birth of Prince William, Buckingham Palace made its official announcement. However, the news traveled faster by mouth. There were tremendous choruses of "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow" and chant variations on a footbal theme of - "Nice One Charlie-Give Us Another One."

The crowds began to swell in anticipation of Prince Charles' emergence. I can remember watching TV and wondering if he were ever going to come outside. Of course, when he emerged, it was the first time he had been seen in public that day. There was lipstick on his cheek and soon there was more. He appeared to be extremely happy as he spoke of his first-born in glowing terms such as "beautiful" and "marvelous form" and he himself was "relieved and delighted" and duly impressed by the experience of attending the birth. With warmth and concern Prince Charles thanked everyone for their interest and concern. I was almost 11:30pm when the Prince left for home at Kensington Palace.

Anyone who was watching TV will never forget the Prince of Wales leaving the hospital the next day with the glamourous Princess and their baby prince. Prince William was the first direct heir to the Throne who was born in a hospital. Princess Diana could not wait to get him home. They certainly appear to be a radiantly happy couple as they leave the hospital with their small bundle of joy. picture p. 123

I hope there is a republication of this book so that those who don't have it will be able to puchase this beautiful book.

This book is a must for all who collect books on the Royal Family or just enjoy reading about them.

This refers to the hardback edition which was published in 1982 and measures 91/4x113/4 inches.

I bought this book for two reasons: Brontein's name and sections 2 and 3. Bronstein is famous for many unique characteristics: let the Champion, Botvinnik, escape with a draw; lost to Spassky by King Gambit in a Soviet Championship; a few year later beat Tal(!) in a KG (again) in a USSR team championship; meditating the first move as white for more than 30 min before making it! He is the first is to use the KID, QID, and Gruenfeld extensively in his games. Like Nimzowitsch, he never is afraid to test his innovation at the chessboard. He plays the KID equally brilliantly in both color. One thing that took a star from the book rating is he's NOT the author; the author uses him as a consultant and uses most games from Bronstein in the book.
Now the second reason. This is the first time, I saw a book, that explains the use of EVERY PIECE at EVERY LOCATION during the opening, section 2. In reality, this is applicabale to most all openings. Just the order is important in each, and timing is the most crucial one. In section 3, the author 36 standard moves for black pieces, then 24 std moves for black pawns. After that, white's turn with 36 std moves for pieces, and 24 moves for black. How simple! Not realy. The correct sequence, and strategy must be experienced with; like playing for K-side, Q-side, or center thrust by experiment and personal style.
Good book! Wish Bronstein wrote some preface or introduction and some of his "best kept secrets in the KID."
Two more points for experimenting with the KID. Fischer and Kasparov use them too!

An excellent introduction to the King's Indian Defence. It explains this difficult opening with great clarity. It assumes no previous knowlege, unlike most opening books that begin the expainations after several moves into the opening. Every move, plan, what all the chessmen do, and there likely moves, are explained from the FIRST MOVE! There are no dense lists of variations and sub-variations to make you eyes bleed and you will feel happy: it's an easy read. There are some test questions about the key elements of the KID. There are about three or four diagrams on each page, so following the explainations is a doddle. There are 64 annotated games and a further 50 games without annotation, so getting the 'feel' of the opening is also a doddle. This book has proved its worth for me. I've had little sucsess with the KID until I read this gem. I'm a weak club player, (70 BCF, circa. 1260 USCF) but now I'm a little stronger... :)

Finally I can respond to d4 with confidence!

When reading this book I became absolutely amazed at the masterful, almost artistic way in which Bronstein co-ordinates his pieces. I have since learned he is well known for this.

I Highly recommend this book.

I loved this book. As an American living in Auckland, New Zealand, I wanted to read some fiction by New Zealand authors. Now that I have read Bulibasha, I am working my way through Ihimaera's other books.

"Bulibasha" is a fascinating novel about two feuding Maori clans, told by the grandson of the patriarch of the Mahana clan. It is a brilliant portrayl of Maori family life in the 1950's. I won't give away any more. A must read for anyone interested in New Zealand, and a great read for anyone! It is required reading in our household.

A truly powerful story the first time I read it was this year for U.E English. As a child of Maori lineage it fits right into being part of my culture. But mostly I found this novel both enjoyable and interesting, with a backdrop set in the early 1950's in the small rural community of Waituhi just a half hour outside of Gisbourne. Of a family who lived toegether with a christian basis and yet ruled over by a satirical rouge of a dictator type character. Tamihana Mahana better known through the novel as 'Bulibasha' just as his title suggests, Tamihana is a controversial character you found God or was rather found by God while in a field. The Lord's messenger in the form of a 'european angel' uses the typical contrast of the early Maori attitude of 'mistrust' as a basis for Tamihana's first encounter with the almighty. Suggesting that he was never truly a religious man until well, he 'wrestled' with an angel who was sent forth to bring him a message. Quite similar to Joseph and Mary being given a heavinly message from above. Tamihana use the biblical in a negative terminology, using the teachings of the bible to subjugate his 'own' seeds of the sown. His family, except Tamihana is no saint. Raping his wife 'Ramona' and kidnapping her from her engagement and impending marriage to her truelove Rupeni Poata at the tender age of seventeen. Tamihana is a literal 'monster' with little feelings and a typical selfishness and arrogance of his own strengths. Fantastic in the sporting arena, he had trophys from various sporting exploits, from rugby to track and field events. He is the borne athlete.

But even physical strength only takes one so far as Tamihana like many young Maori prior to the 1950's did not complete his schooling in 'school' raised on a farm, he may have exceeded in the sports lifestyle but he falls second intellectually as he grows older with a ripening Ramona giving birth to three sons in less than four years. Tamihana develops a nasty adversity to education, refusing to approve of any such form. In a changing world when european ideals transformed much if early Maori lifestyles and values through a changing period of early New Zealand History, Witi Ihimaera had superbly captured and set his story of Bulibasha.

With a Maori man of Tamihana's stature expressing many of the common views and attitudes of the traditional Maori values, yet Tamihana as a character though physically strong and content in a world he can mould and shape with his hands as a shearer, he is doomed for the future. Where Maori would have to change and adapt to survive.

Tamihana meets his match in the youngest grandson Simoen Mahana, a rebellious youth. Who is the exact opposite of Bulibasha, the 'new-age' against the 'old-age'. He is a representation of the 'next-generation' striving for an identity in one topsy-turvy world of mixed traditions and culture.

He is proud, honourable and educated. Simeon goes to school educates himself and is a threat and seen as little more than a kennel-dog by his grandfather the oppressor in the novel.

He works his tail off at the family homestead, cleaning, baby-sitting, butchering meat and the usual farm duties. From a rural family with a sheraing history, Simeon wants something more for himself and his own family's futures. Seeking education above the domestic-labour of his grandfather's lifestyles.

Bulibasha, is a complex novel that touches many heartstrings from being comical to serious and tear-streaking it is a masterpiece of Maori literature that I am proud to have read and digested.

My compliments to Witi Ihimaera on yet anither award winning best seller that touches the mind, the heart and the soul with each and every word.

I have been a patient of Dr. Rahn's for about a year. My carpal tunnel, misdiagnosed by another chiropractor, was almost at a point of no return.
Roger used his technique of massage and ultrasound and I'm almost 100%,
WITHOUT SURGERY!!! Knowing the physiology of thoracic outlet syndrome
helps understand why this method works. I encourage professionals learn
this technique.

Incredible recovery, healing and it's in the book!

As a patient of Dr. Rahn's, I was excited to review his book as I have experienced the remarkable results his techniques can bring. When I first began treatments almost 4 years ago, I had been diagnosed with bone on bone presentation and told by a medical doctor that I needed knee replacement for both knees. Thanks to regular deep tissue and chiropractic treatments, I am pain free and have regained enough strength and mobility to return to full time employment. Thankfully, I no longer take pain meds and am not even considering surgery.

Dr. Rahn has accomplished a lot for many patients, and his book makes it possible for even more to be helped with other practitioners using his revolutionary techniques. It is written so that both professionals and their patients can benefit and learn. Highly recommended!!

This book is totally aweseome! Not only does it give an indepth explanation of chiropractic adjustments, techniques, theories, and so on, but it also deals with the issue of "how to correct the problem". Today, there are so many chiropractors out there that spend about 2 minutes with you "snap, crackle, and pop", charge you $50.00 and throw you out the door...without ever fixing the problem! This book is incredible considering that it focuses on the treatments and how to get yourself better. THe section which talks about Carpel Tunnel is excellent, and if you, or someone you know has carpel tunnel, you need to buy this book. It will help you immensely! Carpel Tunnel is very serious, and it stops us from doing what we love...such as playing the guitar, typing, and just every day activities. This book tells us how to "correct" the problem and reverse the carpel tunnel.

A great, fast paced murder mystery novel, you won't be able to put it down. This is the first in a series of Hillary King mysteries and this smart, tough, Private Eye has more than a woman's intuition going for her, she also has extra sensory perception.
