Don't miss this diamond within and don't be mislead by the reading level (Ages 4-8). This is a powerful book which gives the breaking heart permission to get another dog, love another dog, and form relationships with another dog yet still maintain the respect, integrity, and love for the beloved deceased dog. The book reassures the grieving owner that it is alright--nay, the deceased dog wants and encourages the owner left behind to heal, go on with life, and love again. The book assures the owner that the deceased dog is *ALWAYS* there in spirit and will be waiting for the owner at Rainbow Bridge. Oh yes, have some tissue at hand . . .

I loved this book. After the death of my best friend of ten years (my dog, Hardy), it made me realise that I wasn't the only one out there.

I contributed the story about "Holly". She was my 15 year old poodle who saw me through the death of my father when I was eight, my teen years and becoming an adult. She died right after my 22nd birthday. Writing my memories of Holly was very theraputic for me. Since then I have lost another beloved pet (Chelsea, a seven year old Himalayan cat) and the stories in this book helped me through my grief. My advice to all pet owners is have this book bought and on a shelf BEFORE the lost of your four-legged friends. The book will be there waiting for you when you need it.

If you have lost a pet and are mourning, don't miss reading!

This children's book is a wonderful celebration of our nation's rich history of Jazz Music. The beautiful illustrations themselves are enough to make this book worth buying, however the text is great too and is set to a jazzy beat. The book alludes to several famous jazz artists and has a brief glossary in the back giving more detail about the artists' lives. The book also includes a cd in the back. This book is great for classrooms or homes, a delightful read that children will love. This book is also a great investment for anyone who loves jazz music.

A moving story line with fun, action-packed drawings.

This book is a nice introduction to the world of jazz music. A short history of Jazz in the front of the book was helpful to me as I planned a K-2 art lesson centering around Jazz music. Students enjoyed the rymes accompanied by bold, silkscreen style illustrations. The accompanying CD is simple enough for young students and highlights jazz instruments one by one giving a short description followed by the sound that instrument makes. The CD concludes with a jazz song which includes lyrics that match words from the book. Especially of interest to my students was the bio on the authors/illustrators....who often listen to music while they paint! Just like we do in class. : )

The Jazz Dream Team--a Top 20 Book of the Year!

Review Date: 2008-04-18
The renowned team of Leo and Diane Dillon sparkle in this fond evocation of jazz greats, as entertaining as it is educational. They contrive a "dream team" of six jazz legends, John Coltrane, Ella Fitzgerald, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, and Max Roach, and one relative newcomer to the pantheon, bassist Stanley Clarke. We're there with the all-Black audience in a small theater setting, delighted and inspired as the fantasy begins with Miles soloing on trumpet, and--one of my personal favorites, sometimes overlooked--Max Roach on the drums:

Repeat on the beat
When Max Roach keeps the heat
On his drums, rhythm thrums,
Makes you jump in your seat.

The Dillons know their stuff, whether it's the period (1950's) clothing, the audience reaction (Feel the beat in your feet, what a treat), the roots of jazz, or the nicknames and styles of the musicians: Charlie Parker's alto sax riffs "fly through the sky, on the wings of a bird."
They capture of essence of Monk in two sentences--in a book for kids!

Thelonious Monk invents on the keys,
Does his own thing, not aiming to please.
Discordant chords now blend ta be
Pure genius, joined in harmony.

The richly saturated illustrations are as captivating as the text, While they could be computer-generated, they're warm and have a graphics/poster quality. An "African" style pattern often backs the foregrounded musicians, providing visual interest and unity. I have a few very minor qualms, trivial really--but perhaps expected from one who is a major fan of jazz as well as kids' books: While the musicians' portraits are generally excellent, they don't quite get Ella Fitzgerald right. (In fact, a lighting technician backstage resembles Billie Holiday more than Ella's picture resemble Ella.) Miles Davis could blow both hot and cool jazz, but it is for the latter that he is most famous. Puzzling then, that Miles' trumpet's "sparks heat up the skies." Finally, Charles Mingus is the definitive bass player, and belongs here for both historical and stylistic reasons. Perhaps the Dillons wanted to included a somewhat more contemporary player.

I assumed the included CD would be a brief, watered-down composition, but I was wrong. After an interesting 12-13 minute sampling of the various instruments (contrasting different saxes, drums, volumes, and tempos), the uncredited band plays an
exciting number that shows off the instruments' individual and collective expression. As with the text, the CD strikes just the right balance of easy-going instruction and sheer finger-snapping, toe-tapping fun. Better get this one into yo'soul, and onto your bookcase!

Beautiful, multicultural illustrations. Many uses.

I picked up this book at a small local book shop and immediately had to have it! The Biblical theme makes it posible to use in Sunday school classes, however, the art work and idea of dealing with change makes it appropriate for school use, too. I teach education courses and plan to use it in my Art in the Classroom course as well as Children's Literature. Children could make up their own stories to go with the illustrations which come from original art of many ages and countries. All the illustrations are explained and identifed in the last pages of the book. I have given away my copy to someone who saw the potential for use in the classroom because she was dealing with seasons. This book is for anyone who enjoys outstanding picture books, not just children.

Jing is an exciting manga, filled with adventure and wonder. The panels of each page are packed with detail, with mysterious locations of all kinds. Each time Jing sets off to steal something, there's sure to be a twist you won't expect. Yuichi Kumakura has all sorts of complex ideas and themes running through the series. He seems to have a reason for each unusual name and place. I was also charmed by the interesting tidbits between chapters that added to the depth of the world. All in all, a fantastic read!

Jing is the best! It's the story of a crafty bandit who has a knack of getting in the strangest situations with the strangest creatures. It's a good read in the action and humor section, so, if that's your thing, you'll love this! (and if you aren't interested yet, just wait until you see the way too cute porvoras in book 2! and if that still doesn't get you interested, well... to each there own, I guess) Oh yeah, did i mention the art's pretty good too?

Well, I've read alot of Manga, but this one is probably one of the best. I've read up to volume four so far,And, needless to say, I'm pretty much addicted to it.

There isn't much of a story to it, it's just about a boy and his bird in pursuit of fine and valuble treasures, while fighting evil villains along the way. Most of the events don't lead up to anything, and past events don't make any difference in the next volumes. It's fun to enjoy just an action flik sometimes though.
The artwork in this Manga is Very, very good, to say the least. It's so original, I've never really seen anything like it. It's like a whole new sub-style to Manga. The best part is that the high-quality artwork is maintained through the entire thing, with going down in detail. It's also very addicting. O_o
All in all, I'd say buy it. You may like it if you're not much of a storyline person, just looking for some action.

Jing: King of Bandits is about a teenage boy named Jing and his talking bird Kir ( that can also shoot bursts of energy out of his mouth.) that go from place to place in search of rare treasures. Now I know that that sounds pretty typical but it's a little different than what you might expect.

A few things you need to know about Jing before you start reading it is that 1: Unlike the majority of Manga out there, this one doesn't really have much of a continuity to it. At the start of each new story you see no indication that the previous one ever happened. Normally that totally bugs me, but for some reason it seems to work really well in this series.

2: The only recurring characters you ever see in the series are Jing & Kir. the only other mainstay is that all of the stories involve a girl in some way. All of which are either cute or hot. And while Jing is never very interested in the girls, Kir is always trying to put the moves on them, often with hilarious results.

3: Jing is not so much about action as it is about the mystery and intrigue leading up to the discovery of the next treasure. It's not to say that there isn't any action in Jing though, because there is some pretty good action in there.
So far out of the 4 volumes that i've read The Lost City of Reviver story in Vol. 3 is probably the one I've found the most interesting.

And 4: From first glance the art style in this manga looks very childish, and that is what kept me from buying the series when it first came out. And while Jing looks just like some kid with a spiky hairdo you will come to discover that he is a very slick character. Unlike in the anime where just by looking at him you can tell how slick he is.
So while the art syle looks childish, the series isn't.

This is currently one of my favorite series out right now and I am always looking forward to the next Volume to come out.

So if you're looking for a series that isn't like your typical Fantasy Manga, then I highly recommend you check this out.

This is a wonderful value for any ukulele player. Not only does it contain John King's transcriptions of these great pieces in both musical notation and string and fret numerical notation, it comes with a CD of him playing these pieces.

The notation on the pieces is easy enough that a rank beginner like myself can follow them. What a thrill it was to receive the package and be able to begin playing Bach, Chopin, and the traditional Japanese song 'Sakura' right away.

The CD is also very beautiful to listen to.

Overall a great package for any ukulele player interested in expanding their playing horizons.

This is a great product for the intermediate to advanced ukulele player. John King's compositions of classical songs are very easy to read and challenging but not impossible to play. The only problem with the book was the lack of explanation for the tablature.

Ukulele the classical approach: an antedote to strumming

Being new to the ukulele I thought I would find John Kings book hard but quite the opposite. Unlike the guitar where I could read the music when playing here I needed to use the symbols. After a while it becomes really easy with the symbols. He has a good selection in this book and the arrangements are carefully designed to lie under the fingers. I would recommend this book as an antedote to anyone who thinks that the ukulele is simply a 'strumming' instrument.

And tell Tchaikovsky the news: The Classical Ukulele turns the popular perception of this little, four-string instrument as a toy or musikalischer spass on its head. This book/CD collection presents serious music for the perennially whimsical ukulele and the promise of some serious fun for those players looking to stretch their abilities and fulfill their latent musical talent. The music is presented in both standard notation and tablature so it's not necessary to read music to learn these beautiful classics. All the pieces - from Bach and Beethoven to Scott Joplin - are supplied with generous fingering instructions as well as historical notes and helpful tips. The recording, done with a bottom-of-the-line production ukulele (you won't need a vintage Martin to sound great), is absotutely faithful to every note and rest in the written score. The recording - both the performance and technical apparatus - is first rate and I often find myself just listening to the recording for the sheer pleasure of it. Mr. King is a musician first and I seldom think about the instrument he is playing when I have the CD on in the background. But the music flows forth unstintingly in freshets of rippling, shimmering notes. I like this set because it delivers 64 pages of well-loved, professionally engraved pieces in a graphic format that is easy to comprehend and will challenge the skill and intellect of the player. Now all we have to do is convince Mr. King to do a book of Chuck Berry transcriptions for an encore!

John King plays ukulele like a virtuoso violinist plays a violin, and the result is pretty much the same. Wonderful music. The Campanella style works really well on uke, and the tones ring wonderfully. On the more chordal pieces, his technique is enough to carry them off. I can recall playing the Chopin Prelude on piano when I was a piano student. To hear it on ukulele is amazing. The tab and notes are well done, and I can see they will present a real challenge. If you can finally play some of these wonderful arrangements, you have arrived as a ukulele player. If you love good classical music, well performed, grab this set. If you play ukulele and you don't have this set, you are an idiot.

Arthurian Role-Playing at its best
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 1998-09-03
King Arthur's Pendragon is what more role-playing games should be about. That is story. The game mechanics are all directed to telling the epic story of a group of knights as they advance through the years. Through the years is an important point. Unlike some games where players seem to go from one battle to the next for no more reason than "killing is fun" and "we get more gold that way", Pendragon is about how people grow and change. They sart out as young knights who rapidly rise in prowess until age finally starts to nibble away at them leaving them old and infirm. Not to worry, each character aims to have heirs that will take up the cause and follow in their father's legendary foot steps. The scope of the game covers usually 60+ years in the life of Arthur ( starting at his age of 3 if you use the expanded time of Anarchy ).

The game mechanics are simple and straight forward with events resolved usually by a skill test on d20 and damage rolled with d6. One element that adds much to the colour of the game are the Personality traits and passions. Personality traits are 13 matched pairs of qualities that define how the character often behaves ( example is Wordly and Generous ) with each pair adding to 20. Knights who posses high levels in certain passions gain fame for their chivralous or religous behaviour. Passions represent oaths and duties to others. Strong passions can aid a character to do impossable feats but can also blind a character to other situations.

This game is a classic that has withstood the test of time for a reason and that is it one of the best games around. I especially like running this game with more mature players who want more than another slasher flick or want a more heroic tale to tell.

Pendragon is great. This book contains detailed data, written in a clear way, about life in Arthur's age, beginning in the year 510 after CHrist. THe only flaw is the combat system, which is too violent. Of course, a battle till death is a violent event, but after loosing so much time developing your character, you discover how easy is to be killed using this combat system. ANyway, the authors give you a perfect set-up to go aboard a journey of history, not only a journey of killing, earning gold or casting spells,like AD&D does, for exxample.

I am not worthy !

Now, part of the review guidelines for this forum is that one should not simply praise without giving good reason why: however, in this case there are so many good reasons for praise that i am overwhelmed.
So, to keep it simple: this is the Arthurian roleplaying game. You play a knight, or maybe a clecrk or lady, or maybe even (though i would not reccomend it) a magician.
Yes, that is about it for "character classes". You see, the game depends a lot more on your characters background and personality than his "powers". Do not worry though, there will be lots of fights anyway.
If you like medival stuff (but not so much that you let facts get inthe way of fun, wich the medivals themselves would find silly) you will like this game.
A lot.
The not - so - simple, pretentious version...
I suppose one way to start would be its base material, the most splendid cycle of legend in Britain, the chronicle of King Arthur Pendragon. Sadly, the legend in our time has been tainted by superficial sentimentality, dried out by cheap attempts at making it historical (often just an excuse to make it but another version of poor conan the barbarian), and mocked by new - age foolishness. The wonder of this game is that it takes all these limited approaches and simply lets them be absorbed by the origional noble medival tales, creating a setting of vibrant richness.
Another important point: this is a game that is much larger on the inside than the outside. There are mysteries in it that simply never will be solved, even though one feels a hint of their massive importance. But building on them is a clear, if complex, world of heroism and everyday responsibillities. But even if you try to stick to "normal" knightly deeds, you can still get caught up in the labyrinths of politics and romance.
Last but not least, this game does exactly what it was intended to: rules, mood, and setting are in perfect symbiosis. This becomes painfully clear when talented but lesser designers try to muck about with the basics: just look at fourth editions pathetic magic system. Still, at least they had the good sense to make it optional.
This is the best role - playing game in the world. Try to be worthy of it.

One of the best, and most underrated, RPGs ever.

This is one of the most beautiful treatments of Arthurian subject matter I've seen, RPG or not. I don't like Chaosium's combat rule system for this type of game, but the personality and passion trait systems work great plugged into other RPGs, if you spend a little time converting. The strength of the game lies in the reverential yet exciting treatment of the whole milieu. Beautifully illustrated, particularly by Arnie Swekel and Lisa Free. This belongs in any game library.

It's been a whlie since I've played this, or any other game.

This game lives up to it's title. While, perhaps, a bit more gritty than the "Once and Future King" stories, the rules do an excellent job of re-creating the world of King Arthur. I've been Role Playing for quite a while now... 14 years? And this is one of the best games out there, and a very refreshing change from the Monty Haul-ism of D&D and the like.

The emphasis here is on ROLE PLAYING. The rules focus on attempting to become a perfect knight, a paragon of virtue, and a knight of renoun. Unlike other games, this game incorporates a "winter season" that assumes downtime, and allows your character to age. Yes, aging is a part of this game, and perhaps your character's children will get to adventure as well.

The Traits operate on a balance scale of 20 points - The total of these two attributes add up to 20. So you have, perhaps, Merciful 17 - Cruel 3. Passions are things you feel strongly about, your Lord, hate of the Saxons, etc.

This is a sample of the way the rules are designed to help you Role Play rather than Roll Play.

Combat and Magic are taken much more seriously than in D&D. Your character's hit pionts are derived from their stats, and stay that way for the rest of the game (more or less). The most hit points you can have is 39. Armor absorbs damage. Now, what's the most damage our 39 hit point character can do with his sword? 7D6 - that's up to 42 points, with an average of 24/25.

Combat is to be taken seriously!

As for Magic, well. This isn't D&D. There's none of the flash-bang Magic that there is in D&D. In fact, Merlin would be impressed by the magic a 2nd level D&D wizard could do. Spells take a long time to cast. Holy Ground, High Holidays, group ceremonies, etc. have a great effect on the outcome of spells. This is a game where players will spend weeks or months preparing spells, to be cast in holy places, on high holy days. Then spending time resting and recuperating after spells have been cast.

I don't know how supplements handle magic, Faerie, etc. Notice again that the emphasis here is on Role Playing, Storytelling, not FLASH-BANG effects. This game gives you opportunities to describe events, tournaments, adventures, celebrations, not just hack-and-slash fighting.

This game isn't for everyone, even those who it is for may take a while to acclimate. Like Castle Falkenstein, and Amber, this game is designed to help you tell a story. The rules add to the drama, they aren't just a collection of rules on how to create powerful characters and how to fight with them. Role Playing came out of Wargaming, and it shows. This is one of the few games that elevates Role Playing to the status of art. This is a game that returns to us the lost art of Story Telling.

I don't like a lot of books I've read, in the same way I like movies and see them over and over, but this one is one I keep reading. Great plot twists, really swift writing, meaty but not chewy.

Jim Lewis is certainly a master of description, a scratcher of psychology and a writer who digs hard at the turf of extraordinary people trying to mundane down their lives. The characters of Walter Selby and his son Frank are deeply connected (as is their pre history), yet they are not even known to each other. This is a story of one's inability to escape their heritage or genetics, even though much credit goes into reinventing themselves. In the skilled writing of Jim Lewis, we see a kiss of Wendell Berry and Robert Penn Warren; simply a tradition of the best. Mr. Lewis will make you see the world in a slightly different manner and will impress upon you the need to think, search and reflect right along with his characters. I plan to read his other books and feel graced that I'm able to enter the world of this author's writings.

A masterpiece. Unbelivable. Stylistically perfect. If you care about literature this is a book you should not miss out on.

The King is dead but literature is not.

This is a difficult book to recommend because as much as I loved it I wouldn't argue with someone who didn't, they'd probably have some valid points. Halfway through I threw it in the trash and woke up a few nights later to dig it out and read at three am. My copy is still stained and smells. Not a perfect book if perfection means universal appeal but if you think quantity has displaced quality both in number of books published and number of pages in each book this is the one for you. Jim Lewis is the best author alive in my opinion and has two things most don't - a real gift and the ability to be concise. Anyone can convey a miserable and interminable experience by creating one for the reader but a precious few can do it, or anything else, in one sentence. If 'I know this much is true' was half as long, twice as good, and a little more brutal it would be 'The King is Dead' on its best day. I agree completely with the reviewer who said Jim Lewis makes him reluctant to write by showing what the best are capable of. Robert Penn Warren, John Steinbeck and Annie Proulx come together in this brilliant author. If you like it read 'why the tree loves the axe' if you can find it.

I wish I'd never read this book so I could read it for the first time. I wish I'd never read this book so that I could read other fiction without being disappointed. I wish I'd never read this book so I could go on thinking that I could write a decent novel without "The King is Dead" hanging over my head like the law. This is the best novel I've read in a good while.

I ordered these Bible for our medical mission team traveling to Jamaica. They wanted to be able to share God's word with patients who were elderly and had vision problems. This Bible was just perfect for their needs---large enough print for the patients to read comfortably, and not too heavy to transport to the rural clinics. Good value for the money.

My mom, who recently moved into an assisted living center, asked for a new set of scriptures to use with their Bible study (and who WOULDN'T honor their mother's request for a new Bible!). I wanted something with large print and modestly priced. It was just what she wanted, and she enjoys using it every day.

I went to a local bookstore and compared every large print King James bible they had. This one had the largest print and was also the clearest print. I don't need giant print, I just find it more comfortable to read.
The ink they used was blacker than the others and the paper they used was whiter too. However the rest of the book is nothing to write home about. The leather is bonded and kind of cheap. The ribbon marker is barely the size of a shoestring.
I figured if I stuck with this bible long enough, I would wear it out and then send off the nice pages (by far the best part of this bible) to a bindery and have it rebound in genuine leather and have them sew in 2 or 3 nice wide satin marker ribbons.

This is a great Bible easy to read because of the print size. Also easy to find chapters with thumb index. I would recommend this bible to all KJV readers. Great value for the price.

This Interlinear is outstanding for the serious student of God's Word. Something not mentioned in the other reviews is the fact that one can see the differences between the original language texts used by the translators of these respective translations. Especially in the New Testament, one can read the King James and see the "textus receptus" used by its translators in comparison to the "critical text" used by the RV translators (the text upon which virtually ALL modern translations are based--except for the NKJV). It's great to be able to see the sometimes extensive, as well as the subtle differences, between these two texts. And to be able to "see" these diffences by simply reading the text is very enlightening (not to mention time-saving). That's a big plus. Also the combining of the marginal notations of BOTH the KJV and the RV is extremely enlightening. It provides much fodder for thought as alternative translations or literal renderings of the Hebrew or Greek are so succinctly provided. The cross references in the center column are a bit of a strain on the eyes...but as other reviers have noted--they are excellent.

In terms of quality of product: Definitely 5 stars! The goatskin leather is an absolute aesthetic delight (both to the eyes as well as the hand). Very lush and high-quality! The paper is high-quality and very thin. But one thing that surprised me was that even using colored markers, the bleed-through is virtually non-existent. There is also room in the margins for personal notes (but I've not, as yet, taken my pen there (it's almost too beautiful to mar with my poor penmanship).

The quality of the printing is also excellent--dark and very clean and clear (although some of the "parallel" aspects are a little smaller than I would like. Blame it on age and dwindling eye-sight.

As a study Bible, this is a "superior" study Bible. There is so much wealth of information contained within this interlinear. The RV is probably the most "literal" translation that has ever been produced. For those who don't know Hebrew or Greek, this Bible is the next best thing for being able to read Hebrew and Greek. The 1881 translators set out to produce a translation that was absolutely meticulous--and they succeded! In sum, I would highly recommend the KJV/RV Interlinear for the meticulous student of God's Word. And given reasonable care, this Bible is defintely a treasured "heirloom" built to last a life-time (and perhaps then-some). As far as I'm concerned, NO ONE produces a higher quality Bible than Cambridge! "Take up and read."

It's wonderful that the Revised Version is still in print. I wish the same were true of the ASV. (Contrary to what another reviewer said, it's NOT easy to reconstruct the ASV text from the RV's endnotes. Most of the differences are in the "Classes of Passages" sections that apply throughout the whole Bible, with few specific verse references.)

What a beautiful book this is! I bought it as much for the incomparable Cambridge goatskin binding as for the text. It feels and smells and MOVES so beautifully that I enjoy just holding it. It's well worth every penny. I wish Cambridge published all versions of the Bible. The only problem is that it's too lovely to carry around unprotected, and nobody makes a Bible cover big enough to hold it.

I would only add a few things to the previous review:

1) that the Revised Version is the closest thing to the Greek you'll see in English, even more so than the New American Standard (which was based on its American Printing, the ASV).

2) You can reconstruct the ASV from the changes list supplied in the helps. There are not that many changes.

3) This translation is also accompanied by extensive cross-references, which are not just lists of verses as they are in every other Bible, but they have semantic tags attached:

a) no tag means exact or close parallel;
b) "Cited" or "Cited from" means actual quotation;
c) "Cp." means references, when the parallel is less exact;
d) "See" means either a passage where the main references have been collected, like the NIV Cross-Reference System does it, or it means a longer passage, parallel or explanatory;
e) "al" means all the parallels are not given;
f) "?" is placed after a reference which may or may not be applicable;
g) "mg" refers to references to marginal readings

In addition, the references are given in a certain order:
1. Quotations or exact verbal parallels;
2. Passages with similarity of idea or expression;
3. Explanatory or illustrative
4. Historical or geographical
5. Illustrating differences of rendering from the KJV

So if you like the NAS cross references, or the NIV cross references, I believe you'll like these even more.

4) There are other fun things in this Bible; a through-the-Bible calendar you can use in a one- or three-year format; blank note sheets of high quality paper; wide margins!

Is there any better?

Hats off again to Cambridge Publisher. There is no finer binding than that found on their Bibles. Oxford University Press doesn't even come close to the quality I've come to expect from Cambridge.

This is an Inter-Linear Bible of very high quality.

I wasn't familiar with the concept of an inter-linear text before buying this book. The King James and the Revised versions are nearly identical, where the Revised is a little more clearly stated to the modern ear than is the KJV. Interlinear text comes in where the two versions diverge. The text becomes smaller so that two lines will fit where there is normally one. The KJV then appears above the RV. My first impression was that this would make the book difficult to read, but after reading several pages I saw that the eye really does adjust to the task quite handily. Plus the payoff is nice - two texts in one that can be read truely simulteneously - not like in a parallel bible.
