I had the pleasure of taking this class with Dr. King as an undergraduate and now use this text when teaching my own college course in sexual behavior. Dr. King's relaxed yet informative writing style make's it one of the few textbooks my student's don't seem to mind reading. It has a wealth of good information for anyone wanting to learn more about sexuality and sexual behavior.

Dr. King's human sexuality texts (any of the editions) are very good learning tools. They're very no nonsense and easy to understand, some things it it are very alarming to say the least, there's graphic pictures of STDs, some of the material can be disturbing as the book does review fetishes and sexual abuse cases. I had taken Dr. King's class the semester before he retired. I was rather inspired to direct my path towards sex therapy after taking his class. thanks dr king!

I had to use this textbook when I took Dr King's Psychology class at the University of New Orleans (Spring '06). I found it to be a very informative eye-opener. Dr King presents information in a clear, concise, just-the-facts way, yet it doesn't read like a 'boring old textbook.' The information really makes the reader think twice about the West's cultural, historical, and scientific perspectives on the nature of sexuality.

Read this book, for a class or personal education or whatever reason. At the very least you'll come out with some interesting facts about human behavior, but more likely you'll change your entire perspective on human sexual behavior.

As a school librarian, I often get specific requests for books from teachers. This book was one such request. This is a Scholastic book that has been sold through Scholastic for years as a paperback, but I wanted a hard back copy of it. It's a terrific book for our 3rd graders who are studying Martin Luther King, Jr. and for Black History month in February. I was thrilled to find a hard back copy from Amazon.

The Scholastic company along with Margaret Davidson has put together a very informative book for youngsters. The book doesn't delve too deeply into the social consciousness so it will keep a youngster's interest. It is an excellent book to show how, against all odds, a man no more slated for greatness than any other American, had a dream to change the way African Americans were treated. It is also an excellent book that demonstrates how conflict-resolution can be achieved through peaceful means. This book makes for a wonderful read aloud to herald in the celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King's Day.

As a third grade teacher I use this book on a yearly basis during the month of January. Davidson does a wonderful job of allowing the children to connect to young Martin. From the early chapters she eloquently weaves Martin's words along with those of his friends and colleagues. Children are certainly saddened when Martin is eventually killed. Well worth reading!

Sara King's style is evident in all of these poems. While there are obvious strong pieces, there are several that should not have been included in this collection.

Any description that I could plot down with letters would not equal the range of emotion reached by Sara King's metaphors. Therefore, I will not try. I will urge you, however, to read the "Laundry" poem and you will agree with me. (I heard this poem via Garrison's Keillor's Writers Almanac program on NPR.)

I will admit that I did not, indeed, purchase a copy of this book--I read the complete text via the Publisher's Web site, but believe me: this is worth buying. I intend to order my copy this week.

I think of these poems as sharp arrows that hit their target. Perhaps because so many are addressed to "you" I think of them as zooming through the air to some ONE, to some PLACE. They are zingers. Full of experience. King knows what's up and doesn't spare words....though she uses words sparingly. There's plenty of regret but no self-pity. Her voice is her own. The real thing. You will be glad you bought her book.

For a long time recently, I felt as if I were sleep walking through life, with my soul outside my body (choosing perhaps to live in the poetry section of Amazon.com or somewhere equally exotic....) and then I picked up this book of poems. I laughed, cried and sighed and I nodded my head with each poem I read and felt my soul come back to me......The magic of words!

Two of my favorites are "Finding Your Wife Was a Lesbian" (the last stanza is poetry at it's finest) and "The Clean House" (as a cat owner and wife of a "Mr. Clean", I wanted to frame this one....)

It's always exciting to discover a new poet, especially one whose poems you feel as if you could've written yourself. Such are the poems of Sara King. I highly recommend this book to all poetry lovers, women especially...it's on my keeper shelf.

The hope and despair of love and romance

Sara King is so insightful and fearless in her examination of the full range of modern love. One can feel her heart race at the thought of full surrender to a love while at the same time her ear is cocked for the first sign of withdrawal. Her ability to balance on the knife blade between hope and despair is extraordinary. Her sense of romance is almost medieval in that there is always a yearning for a love that reality can never assuage or fulfill. Always some twisting and pulling away -- a recognition that this will end and not be remembered. Her imagery is fresh and immediate -- like an early spring with an unexpected frost. It is a particularly poignant book for those who are recovering from a disappointing love, because it also carries the ring of truth and therefore hope. Her work reminds me of ee cummings. Highly recommended.

Illusions of Love was a great mystery. I really liked the love between Creed and Skye. I think Jed (Creed's father) added a little twist to the story. It would be nice to know why he left his family and became a bum of sorts.

You think you know who done it and then something else happens and your wrong.

This is the best novel Ms. Marcia has written. I also liked her novella in Island Magic.

I have not only had the pleasure of reading all of this author's books, but had the pleasure of meeting Marcia King-Gamble in person.

This was one of the best romance/murder mystery books I have read. The plot that was selected for this story will show readers, that every page you will turn until you finish this story is so good. Skyla Walker, who is a reporter is the heroine in this story and Creed Bennett, the famous illusionist is the hero. To my fellow romance readers: if you like the stories that not only involves the romantic parts but has the mystery of five suspected murders pointing to the hero, with some interesting twist of clues to figure out as you read every page. Then, this is the book you must read, let me just suggest you read the entire book period. This is an easy read, very enjoyable, author will keep you interested until the very end and never a boring part occurs in this book. The author has truly impressed me with how well she put this one together, it was a very well thought out plot and she should do more of the romance/mysteries in the future.

Thanks Marica, for giving your reader fans like me such an enjoyable book to read.

Check out some of my other favorite books I've read by this author: Eden's Dream, Island Magic, Under Your Spell and Remembrance.

The Pocono mountains of Pennsylvania, a world-renowned black illusionist, and old family baggage are the makings for another romantic mystery for Marcia King-Gamble. Skye Walker is back in her hometown Mills Creek writing for the local newspaper after eight years in Paris. There she had blossomed from an ugly duckling into a beautiful swan. Now she is a self-confident journalist and a very attractive woman, not the same woman who was stood up for the prom as a practical joke. One of her first big assignments is to interview Creed Bennett, an acclaimed illusionist, who has come back home for some much needed rest amid rumors surrounding him involving a number of missing women who were in one way or another associated with him. He is also the one who stood her up on prom night. Creed has little patience with journalists, especially beautiful young woman journalists. Skye is at first insulted that he doesn't even remember who she is, and when Creed does realize who she is, he is embarrassed when remembers his innocent part in the prom practical joke. This was a finely crafted 4½ star romantic suspenseful tale.

A Well Written, Descriptive Book
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-09-27
The book, In the Time of the Drums, by Kim L. Siegelson, is a story about the relationship between an island-born slave boy named Mentu and his grandmother, Twi, a woman who had grown up in Africa before she was captured and sent away to work on the island where the story takes place on the east coast of America. It is through her stories, secrets, and teachings of the songs played on the drums that Mentu finally understands what it means to be strong in the face of despair.
If I could come up with a word that could describe this book, it would be "descriptive." All of the words seemed to leap out at me with tons of imagery. I could actually see Mentu, Twi, and the island where they lived from my dorm room. The image of the island and its people that Brian Pinkney, the illustrator, drew also matched up perfectly with the life I envisioned Twi and Mentu having, from the look of the island and thatched roof huts to the clothes that they wore and the goat-skin drums that they played. All of these elements contributed greatly to the descriptive nature of this book and made it one that is a must-read for all young readers ages 8 and up.
I also liked the fact that this book focused on the theme of keeping one's heritage and culture alive at all costs. In a society where students of different cultures become "Americanized," it is important for young readers to value the differences they see among themselves along with their similarities. While similarities can bring all types of people together, it is our differences that make each individual unique and important in a multicultural society.

This book is rich in illustration and in story. The book resonates like a powerful drum beat. The author tells a tale that seems passed from generation to generation. This is a great read for Black History Month. This is a book you will read again and again to your children. The suggested age for readers of 4 to 8 is really too limiting. Children of all ages will enjoy and be moved by this book.

In the Time of the Drums is an excellent story of the Gullah heritage. It tells of a people who have not forgotten. Young Mentu is told of a time by his grandmother Twi, when he will be "strong-strong." Twi, a wise, respected elder of the community, leads her people home. Mentu is "strong-strong" as he passes the heart-felt beats, and stories that can't be forgotten to descendents, and to us.

Siegelson has a mastery of words that is incredible. The rhythm of the words becomes immediately apparent as you read and it is definitely something you'll want to share right away. Brian Pinkey does a wonderful job, as usual, and the lines of his drawings echo the rhythm and lyricism of the story. I think it is interesting and appropriate to the story (you'll understand after you read it) that althought the story is based in historical fact, it is not limited by it. If you are an african-american parent, buy this book. If you are not an african-american parent, buy this book. I will be watching for the next by Kim Siegelson. It helps me understand a lot more of what was going on at the times the books were written. Mostly it helps me apply the Word to my own life. It has spoiled me, I have hunted several times for it in leather bound, I sure wish they would make it. I would get 1 for every member of my family.

Unfortunately, the Bible was stolen because it was in the driver's seat of my vehicle that was stolen in July of 1997. I have not found a Bible that has so much to offer as well as inform. I really love the way Max Lucado illustrates the Word.

I really love my Max Lucado Inspirational NKJV Study Bible. It's a wonderful study bible with many sidebars of life lessons of Lucado's teaching guides. This the only one I use because it helps me to have a better understanding of the Scriptures. Each Book of the Old and New Testaments are laid out in an instruction manual style. All chapters are boldly titled to explain the situation for each one. The Life Lessons examines more closely the situation, makes observations, gives inspiration, makes application and gives further explorations of other scriptures throughout the Bible. It's chalkful of footnotes of many reliable references. Throughout this study gem are more inspirational ancedotes from Grace, Forgiveness, Suffering and Victory to God's Love, Hope, Prayer and Faith. And many more worthwhile inspirations that will bless your life. Even more, it has one hundred greatest thoughts, an index to selected readings, a dictionary with topical concordance, acknowledgments from many great references from the most notable names in Christianity. There's even a place in the back to add your own notes. I'm sure this is the only study bible you'll ever use. I find it to be the most comprehensive, enriching masterpiece of the Holy Bible yet. I would definitely give this as a nice gift.

Don't miss this diamond within and don't be mislead by the reading level (Ages 4-8). This is a powerful book which gives the breaking heart permission to get another dog, love another dog, and form relationships with another dog yet still maintain the respect, integrity, and love for the beloved deceased dog. The book reassures the grieving owner that it is alright--nay, the deceased dog wants and encourages the owner left behind to heal, go on with life, and love again. The book assures the owner that the deceased dog is *ALWAYS* there in spirit and will be waiting for the owner at Rainbow Bridge. Oh yes, have some tissue at hand . . .

I contributed the story about "Holly". She was my 15 year old poodle who saw me through the death of my father when I was eight, my teen years and becoming an adult. She died right after my 22nd birthday. Writing my memories of Holly was very theraputic for me. Since then I have lost another beloved pet (Chelsea, a seven year old Himalayan cat) and the stories in this book helped me through my grief. My advice to all pet owners is have this book bought and on a shelf BEFORE the lost of your four-legged friends. The book will be there waiting for you when you need it.

Well, I've read alot of Manga, but this one is probably one of the best. I've read up to volume four so far,And, needless to say, I'm pretty much addicted to it.

There isn't much of a story to it, it's just about a boy and his bird in pursuit of fine and valuble treasures, while fighting evil villains along the way. Most of the events don't lead up to anything, and past events don't make any difference in the next volumes. It's fun to enjoy just an action flik sometimes though.
The artwork in this Manga is Very, very good, to say the least. It's so original, I've never really seen anything like it. It's like a whole new sub-style to Manga. The best part is that the high-quality artwork is maintained through the entire thing, with going down in detail. It's also very addicting. O_o
All in all, I'd say buy it. You may like it if you're not much of a storyline person, just looking for some action.

Jing: King of Bandits is about a teenage boy named Jing and his talking bird Kir ( that can also shoot bursts of energy out of his mouth.) that go from place to place in search of rare treasures. Now I know that that sounds pretty typical but it's a little different than what you might expect.

A few things you need to know about Jing before you start reading it is that 1: Unlike the majority of Manga out there, this one doesn't really have much of a continuity to it. At the start of each new story you see no indication that the previous one ever happened. Normally that totally bugs me, but for some reason it seems to work really well in this series.

2: The only recurring characters you ever see in the series are Jing & Kir. the only other mainstay is that all of the stories involve a girl in some way. All of which are either cute or hot. And while Jing is never very interested in the girls, Kir is always trying to put the moves on them, often with hilarious results.

3: Jing is not so much about action as it is about the mystery and intrigue leading up to the discovery of the next treasure. It's not to say that there isn't any action in Jing though, because there is some pretty good action in there.
So far out of the 4 volumes that i've read The Lost City of Reviver story in Vol. 3 is probably the one I've found the most interesting.

And 4: From first glance the art style in this manga looks very childish, and that is what kept me from buying the series when it first came out. And while Jing looks just like some kid with a spiky hairdo you will come to discover that he is a very slick character. Unlike in the anime where just by looking at him you can tell how slick he is.
So while the art syle looks childish, the series isn't.

This is currently one of my favorite series out right now and I am always looking forward to the next Volume to come out.

So if you're looking for a series that isn't like your typical Fantasy Manga, then I highly recommend you check this out.

This is a wonderful value for any ukulele player. Not only does it contain John King's transcriptions of these great pieces in both musical notation and string and fret numerical notation, it comes with a CD of him playing these pieces.

The notation on the pieces is easy enough that a rank beginner like myself can follow them. What a thrill it was to receive the package and be able to begin playing Bach, Chopin, and the traditional Japanese song 'Sakura' right away.

The CD is also very beautiful to listen to.

Overall a great package for any ukulele player interested in expanding their playing horizons.

This is a great product for the intermediate to advanced ukulele player. John King's compositions of classical songs are very easy to read and challenging but not impossible to play. The only problem with the book was the lack of explanation for the tablature.

Ukulele the classical approach: an antedote to strumming

Being new to the ukulele I thought I would find John Kings book hard but quite the opposite. Unlike the guitar where I could read the music when playing here I needed to use the symbols. After a while it becomes really easy with the symbols. He has a good selection in this book and the arrangements are carefully designed to lie under the fingers. I would recommend this book as an antedote to anyone who thinks that the ukulele is simply a 'strumming' instrument.

And tell Tchaikovsky the news: The Classical Ukulele turns the popular perception of this little, four-string instrument as a toy or musikalischer spass on its head. This book/CD collection presents serious music for the perennially whimsical ukulele and the promise of some serious fun for those players looking to stretch their abilities and fulfill their latent musical talent. The music is presented in both standard notation and tablature so it's not necessary to read music to learn these beautiful classics. All the pieces - from Bach and Beethoven to Scott Joplin - are supplied with generous fingering instructions as well as historical notes and helpful tips. The recording, done with a bottom-of-the-line production ukulele (you won't need a vintage Martin to sound great), is absotutely faithful to every note and rest in the written score. The recording - both the performance and technical apparatus - is first rate and I often find myself just listening to the recording for the sheer pleasure of it. Mr. King is a musician first and I seldom think about the instrument he is playing when I have the CD on in the background. But the music flows forth unstintingly in freshets of rippling, shimmering notes. I like this set because it delivers 64 pages of well-loved, professionally engraved pieces in a graphic format that is easy to comprehend and will challenge the skill and intellect of the player. Now all we have to do is convince Mr. King to do a book of Chuck Berry transcriptions for an encore!

John King plays ukulele like a virtuoso violinist plays a violin, and the result is pretty much the same. Wonderful music. The Campanella style works really well on uke, and the tones ring wonderfully. On the more chordal pieces, his technique is enough to carry them off. I can recall playing the Chopin Prelude on piano when I was a piano student. To hear it on ukulele is amazing. The tab and notes are well done, and I can see they will present a real challenge. If you can finally play some of these wonderful arrangements, you have arrived as a ukulele player. If you love good classical music, well performed, grab this set. If you play ukulele and you don't have this set, you are an idiot.

I am an Elvis fan and especially enjoy collecting quirky odd items. This book, of the coffee-table genre, certainly falls into that category. From the "rhinestone" encrusted title on the cover to the size of this thing >>it screams "King Elvis" like no other book! Just be sure that you have a sturdy, large coffee table to display this monster. It's jam-packed with rare pics, Elvis history, odd-ball facts & just generally a FUN Elvis book (It's almost as if he helped in designing it...) If you're an Elvis fan, you'll love this book! If you just like unique coffee-table books, this is one for the "oddities" collector!
