This book has marvelous illustrations of the fairy tale story as originally told by the Grimm brothers. This book can be great for young children as the pictures are so vivid and life-like, especially of Snow White who is portrayed as a child rather than a teenager. Each picture is a springboard for conversation with little ones. I will be looking for all of Charles Santore's books after seeing this one.

This book is unique in that it doesn't cover one or two subjects like so many other soccer books, but it tackles (no pun intended!) all the aspects of soccer. This makes for excellent reading, especially for parents and beginners. It isn't a highly technical work, but real good stuff for the right audience!

This is an excellent book. I bought it to learn a little more about the sport of soccer. I have been watching soccer on TV for the past couple of years along with playing in occasional pick up games. I felt that I needed more information to truly get the most enjoyment out of my activity. This book delivered for me. It breaks everything down to the basics and then builds from there. The first chapter starts with such fundamentals as passing, kicking, dribbling, and heading. The next chapter leads you into the different positions on the field. Various strategies, styles, and training techniques are discussed for each specific position and subcategory of that position. Real world examples are given to show that there is more than one style or body type that can play, say outside midfield or central defense. The next chapter examines the different kicks, throw-ins, and defensive tactics along with team play philosophies. These first three chapters were the reason that I purchased the book. I found myself reading into the late hours of the night. The author writes with a great deal of respect for the sport of soccer. This combined with the many pictures and diagrams made for a real page-turner. The last half of the book delves into more advanced skills and techniques. It also discusses coaching advice, fitness, and practice drills. I will have to do a few rereads to get the most out of these chapters. I surely got my money's worth and would recommend it to any one looking to gain more knowledge about the many intricacies of this great sport.

I am an orthopedist in Budapest, Hungary. My wife is a neurosurgeon and we are parents of two boys, one of them has a disability.

This great series, the McFadden Family Series opens with the book Stolen Shadows. In the center are two young medical professionals, who take in abandoned boys, many with serious disabilities.

Dr. Lauren McFadden is a very well rounded figure. In addition to being devoted to her professiona nd patients she maintains a healthy marriage and finds the time to nurish and use her musical talent. She is a great inspiration for any doctor in today's rushed consumerist world.

The other characters are also very interesting. Actually the major strength of this novel is the way the characters are written. Another very important part is the well researched medical situations. Ms. King portraits them accurately and in a way that is hardly seen on television or in novels.

I was lent this book by a friend of Mrs. King a few months ago and it started an addiction to her books.

I have congenital muscular dystrophy. Because of muscular dystrophy I spent most of my life in various rehab and special schools. I wish I had Dr. McFadden as my doctor!

The book is very exciting. It is the first novel of Mary King, and because of that there are a few rough edges still, but because the reader will fall in love with the characters and the story it is hardly recognizable. The characters are alive. Very exciting and very real. They are like any of the guys I meet every day.

The situations these characters face are also very real. Marriage and leading a normal life are big quetions in my own life as well. Education is another issue that is addressed in the book.

I would recommend this book for young adults and adults with an open mind and readyness to embrace a different world that is not that different at all.

A captivating read

A friend referred me to this novel, the first of the McFadden series, about two years ago. After building a great resistance towards the romaticised approach to disability issues, I thought it would be another brave cripple story.

Being deaf and dealing with complications from brain tumours I never imagined I would find a book that depicted life with disabilities accuratly and yet it was entertaining.

The characters are captivating, their adventures are very real. Issues that are "normal" in life come up, showing that people with disabilities don't differ from those without.

Best disability book ever!

I've read alot of books growing up but when I picked up "Stolen Shadows" by Mary King, I was unable to set it down. The book will always keep the reader on the edge of their seat wondering whats going to happen next. As a disabled person with Muscular Dystrophy (SMA Type III), The life, feelings, sex issues, and daily things a disabled person encounters is VERY well portrayed. The medical details and procedures that are explained gives the reader a geat visual of whats going on. While reading the book it is like you're right there as Mary King describes every detail and leaves a vivid picture in your mind! I would highly recommend picking up this book, both for the "able bodied" reader to better educate as well as the disabled reader to give hope and let all of us disabed people to know yes there are alternatives and yes you CAN do it!

Stolen Shadows is the first book in a heartwarming trilogy by Mary King. The books tell the story of the McFadden family. Lauren, a doctor and Bryan, her husband and a physical therapist, are dining out one night. They are asked to help with a young boy, found behind the resturaunt, who appears to be having a seizure. The young boy named Adam is deaf and does suffer from a seizure disorder. Lauren and Bryan soon decide to take Adam into their home. Thus begins the amazing journey that opens up their hearts and their home to several unwanted kids with varying disabilities. Lauren and Bryan have the knowledge to care for these kids's physical needs, but more importantly they have the love to care for their emotional needs as well.
Mary King, through personal experience of working with and caring for people who have disabilities and by doing extensive research, portrays a very honest picture of what life is like caring for someone with disabilities. Ms. King doesn't sugar coat the experience, but her story is filled with warmth, caring, and love.
Having worked in a hospital for over 23 years and taken care of patients with various disabilities, it is refreshing to see such an honest portrayal of people living their lives with, or should I say in spite of a disability.

An Good Introduction to the History of Solar Astrophysics
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-21
In his book, The Sun Kings, author Stuart Clark introduces the reader to both the early history of solar astronomy and astrophysics and the reasons why such studies are important today. Clark begins by telling of the events near September 1st, 1859 in which the Earth was bombarded by a huge solar storm. While the effects of this storm were readily observed around the planet, only one person seems to have witnessed the cause, a huge solar flare on the Sun's surface. This man, Richard Carrington, forms the the central figure of Clark's narrative but he is not the only scientist who contributes to the story. Along the way we meet William Herschel and his son John, Warren de la Rue, George Airy, George Ellery Hale and a number of other figures whose work will gradually shed light on (pun intended) the murky physical connections between our world and the star it circles.

As is often the case in biographical sketches of a scientist's work, the story begins before Carrington's contributions and continues after he meets his tragic end in what be seen as a mid-life crisis gone horribly wrong. In this sense, while Carrington may seem like the subject of the book, the bigger theme is how humans came to understand anything at all about an object that could not be touched, sampled or controlled. In presenting this, Stuart does a good job of describing the science and the culture in which it took place without getting bogged down in the technicalities of the work. By presenting the material first with a pair of near catastrophic events, the author engages the reader and then holds on by revealing the events and personalities that shaped the work done. Gone is the sort of inevitable march towards knowledge approach that many simple treatments of scientific topics use. This is replaced by a better tale of false starts, professional (and sometimes personal) disputes and rivalries along with the triumphs and collaborations that are part and parcel of scientific inquiry.

The only quibble I have is that Carrington's personal story is left a bit undeveloped as compared to the larger scientific theme. I would have liked a bit more discussion of the tradition of the British "Gentleman Scientist" and certainly a deeper analysis of Carrington himself as well as some of his actions. Much of this may be lacking due to a dearth of sources available to the author however and I certainly can not find fault with showing restraint and speculating if that is the case. This is a relatively minor quibble. A bit more serious is the lack of a good explanation of why the Sun has a magnetic field and why is acts in the way it does. It seems that if the author can find a way to simply explain differential rotation as he does, more effort could be put into discussing a bit more of the physics behind the observed phenomena.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone seeking a better understanding of the Sun, the history and culture of science or the process of scientific inquiry. Those wanting to know more about how the Sun works might be well served by checking out an astronomy textbook from their local library to supplement the material included here.

A Rare Combination

It isn't often one finds a book offering readable science along with fascinating portraits of scientists. THE SUN KINGS is an exception that does a truly commendable job of exploring the explosive nature of 19th Century astronomy and the idiosyncrasies of its practitioners. Reginald Carrington's meticulous solar observations and his discovery of solar flares and their effect on the earth are the book's major theme. But there is much more in it about the astronomical greats of that age. The Herschels (father and son), Humboldt, Hale, as well as others whose names have survived attached to various phenomena such as Bode's law, Fraunhofer lines, and the Maunder Minimum figure prominently in these pages. Clark has also sprinkled the tale with intriguing anecdotes--the meteorologist who fired dead chickens from a cannon to test the often-repeated story that tornados had stripped chickens of their feathers, the telegrapher who turned off his batteries during an aurora borealis and powered his line with the magnetic field created during the display, and the first improvised solar cooker, used to fry an egg. The 1860 total eclipse expedition with its first photograph of the event is alone worth the price of the book. Add to that the depiction of the savage infighting among the scientists of that day and the difficulties faced by amateurs and women as they were grudgingly allowed into the sacred circle of academic astronomers--these make current fracases in that field seem minor by comparison. From it all, however, emerged what seems to be a truism today, but a truly major scientific discovery--the relationship of the sun's pulsing heartbeat to events here on earth, springing in large measure from Carrington's observation of a magnificent solar flare.

This book is real history. It is well written, covers the important points of the history being written about, and is very informative. Clark has written a history of the discovery of the nature of the sun, and of how its magnetic field effects the earth. Clark does a very thorough job describing the lead researchers and how they operated. The basic science is discussed very clearly. I learned a lot.

This book is highly recommended for anyone even remotely interested in history.

A Superb History of Observational Solar Astrophysics
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-03
Although this excellent book's subtitle mentions "modern astronomy", the book is really about the sun and how certain key individuals, the "sun kings", have made important discoveries towards our better understanding of some aspects of our nearest star and how the earth can be directly affected. In particular, the role that sunspots and solar flares play in producing auroras and magnetic storms on earth is historically explored. The author weaves his remarkable tale from the mid-nineteenth to the early twenty first century. Everything is brought together in the last couple of chapters in which our current understanding of solar astrophysics is presented. Also discussed is modern research on the observed relationship between the number of sunspots and the earth's climate - another possible contributing factor to climate change. The writing style is clear, very engaging and quite friendly; this book is very difficult to put down, in part because the author skillfully includes details of individuals' personal lives intermingled with the science that they were pursuing. The book can be enjoyed by everyone since the author was very careful in avoiding scientific jargon and in meticulously explaining scientific matters. I definitely look forward to reading more of this author's books.

I read this book after hearing Seth Shostak's great interview with Stuart Clark on the SETI podcast. It is a fabulous tale of astronomy in Victorian times, complete with tragic motifs and quirky insights into what amateur astronomers and gentleman scientists thought about the Sun in those times. I did not not exactly what this book would involve. I fell in love two years ago with Rodda's Deltora books and therefore had to read this one--wondering what "Tales" would be included. With all due respect to Ms. Rodda, it's not always wise for authors to go on huge tangents with a fantasy series.

So, happily enough, this stays close to the heart of Deltora. It is a book writtne by Josef the Librarian to give a brief history of Deltora, and is divided into two sections: The Tenna Birdsong tales of Jardis culture (Josef believes these to contain a nugget of truth) that tell of how the world came to be, and the Rise of Adin, which gives a marvelous story of Adin's coming and uniting of the seven tribes that rivals anything else Rodda has written.

This book shows that Rodda's genius of Deltora was not just limited to the series. While this could be enjoyed without reading anything else, it helps flesh out the Deltora magic.

A must-read for any Deltora fan.

The illustrations in this adaptation of Shakespeare's The Tempest are exquisite, a magical realism that tells the tale in simple terms: Prospero, the former Duke of Milan, and his baby daughter, Miranda, are abducted and cast upon the open sea in a boat. Thanks to a loyal friend, a bundle of provisions and books on the magic arts are secreted on the craft; Prospero is thereby able to guide the small boat to an island, where he makes a home for himself and his daughter. Twelve years later, Miranda is a young woman, Prospero determined to seek revenge on those who have wronged him. Indeed, as the perpetrators sail near the island, a terrible storm arises, crashing the vessel against the cliffs, Alonso, the King of Naples, his son and Prospero's brother, Antonio, surely doomed to a watery grave.

Miranda begs her father to summon his spells and save the ship and its occupants. To the tender-hearted girl's surprise, Prospero admits that he has caused the tempest, bringing those who have harmed them into close proximity. As Prospero takes counsel from his magic sprites, Ariel, the wind spirit, Caliban and others, all on the vessel are saved, but separated "and the ship, though safe and sound upon the beach, is made invisible". As planned, Prospero brings his daughter and Prince Ferdinand together, keeping the others at bay while Miranda and her prince fall in love. Through the intervention of his spirits, Prospero orchestrates his revenge, which ends in forgiveness of his brother and the King and the happy marriage of his daughter and Prince Ferdinand. Prospero's lands are restored and his sprites released as father and daughter return to the place of their birth.

The text is highlighted in parchment-like squares against the jewel-toned colors of Prospero's island, the deep green of the forest, the azure sky, the sapphire sea. Fairies mix with characters in this enchanted landscape, as Prospero resolves his fate and that of his daughter to everyone's advantage. Shakespeare's fascinating tale is written in a manner that appeals to young imaginations, balancing tragedy and humor, cameo illustrations sprinkled throughout the pages, a rich canvas of foibles and fancies in a world where people and fantasy coexist. This is the perfect pairing of author and illustrator, a book to delight children and adults alike. Luan Gaines/ 2005.

I applaud the efforts of Prophet Todd Hall to provide funding for students to attend or remain in college. I initially bought the book to support that effort. After sitting down and reading, studying, and reflecting on the book my walk has changed, it has grown, and I am awakening from my sleep. I thank God for a word like this. I was taken aback, at first, by the conversational tone and humorous style of writing. As I read the book, I could hear Dr. Hall's voice enter my home as if he were preaching a sermon right there. It met me right where I was at the time. The enthusiasm that he had in writing this book jumped off the page as I read.

It is time for many of us to wake up and embrace our destiny. Our vision has become skewed oftentimes by the annointing and vision of others. It is time for individuals to embrace, walk in, and live what dreams God has given them. I pray God will continue to use Dr. Hall as His messenger of truth, deliverance, and restoration.

This is Your Wake Up Call is a thought provking book that will wake your spirit from its sleep. Dr. Hall challeges you to remember the Dream in side each one of us. He gives practical tools for moving forward in destiny. He points out the fact that it is important for us to remember that "God is not obligated to function within the confines of man's ordinances". Once we truly get this revelation we are free to begin walking out our dreams. This book has truly been a blessing and I recommend that you share it with family and friends.

This Is Your Wake-Up Call: Live Your Dreams is of magnanimous import. I hope I have the proper words to really capture its quality. The book is an easy read, no long drawn-out rhetoric. At first, I was a little skeptical about the page length, which is under one-hundred pages, but as I started reading I began to realize that each and every page had tremendous value.

As I read, I began to realize that I had been sleeping on life, although I was mobile. I was accomplishing things, but yet sleep walking, instead of truly achieving the purposed value that my existence has to offer. This book helped me to see myself walking through daily life with a bed head. What is even more important is that it articulated and demonstrated how to get rid of the bed head (how to get rid of the spiritual and mental lethargy that so often weighs so heavily on us). Needless to say, no more bed head for me.

I highly recommend this book for its unending motivational integrity, as well as its ability to just cause others to go to another level.

This Is Your Wake Up Call: This is an eye opening and motivating book for the entire family. It is a call, a mandate, and a command on our lives to step into our purpose and walk out our destiny. After reading this book, you have neither an Excuse nor Reason to not become what all God called you to be in this earth realm. God created use for such a time as this and we as His people must be in proper positioning to receive what He has for us as well as for our families. Generations are connected and souls are on the line. I strongly recommend this book and not to be just a reader, but a doer. Sleep time is over; This Is Your Wake Up Call. Thanks to all of you who had a hand in this fantastic book.

While I may be older than the target audience for this series, I honestly enjoyed the book just as I did the first. A quick, entertaining and engaging read. If you like anime, if you like fantasy worlds, then this series of novels from Fuyumi Ono could probably be for you.

Being a fan of the anime also called the twelve kingdoms I wanted to know more about this world. I have found the first two books to be a great read. Sea of the Wind follows Taiki, the black kirin. This book is close to the anime. Or should I say that the anime has closely followed the book in this volume. This book has deepend my understanding of what occured at this point in the story. If your a fan of the twelve kingdoms, or in ulternate worlds with fantasy origins than this book is for you.

So enjoyable

After waiting for a year, finally I have this novel.
Such a cute story. It is much more relax than the first book about our empress of Kei, Youko. May be it is because of the innocent of Taiki.
The translation are really good, but I do not like the translation for some specific terms of Twelve kingdoms cause they do not give the original meaning.
There are few funny scenes that its anime cannot make it look funny, and of course, the novel is different to its anime. However, this difference does not make it bad at all. We do not need to have Youka telling us Taiki's feeling, we still can understand them very clearly through the story.
For 12 kingdoms fan, it is a must.

When's the next volume coming out??? I want it already!!!

This is the second volume of the Twelve Kingdoms novel and a lot more action is going on than in the first book. I whole-heartedly agree with the Publisher's Weekly quote on the back of the book : "For those who enjoy getting lost in multi-layered adventures, this epic offers dense and challenging escapism." The summary on the back of the book gives you the gist of the story: "the second volume in this seven-volume fantasy epic, explores what it means to truly know yourself in the face of a destiny outside of your control."

To start off, I highly recommend watching the anime (Japanese animation) first. Perhaps that's because I watched the anime first myself, but I feel that it gives a better understanding of the background of the story. I think that because I believe that all the unique terms the author uses in this book can become quite confusing and/or frustrating, and being familiar with the anime already makes it easier to follow the book.

For those who haven't watched the anime, this is about a boy who has a dishearterning home life, where he can't do anything right. His grandmother criticizes him constantly, his brother uses him to blame things on, his mother is always crying after defending him from grandma, and his dad always shows disappointment in him. One day, out of the blue, he gets whisked away to another world, where things are totally different. He is revered and loved, but trusted with amazing responsibilities. He slowly learns that he needs to trust his instincts and not worry so much about disappointing others. There is a lot of fantasy incorporated into this book, and it's just fascinating to read about the different rituals, traditions, beliefs, animals - just a completely different reality - that the boy comes across. The author has a background in Buddhist studies, by the way. I found myself very absorbed in this book while reading it. People would talk to me while I was reading and I wouldn't hear them! I think that's the sign of a good book, don't you?

For those who have watched the anime, this book goes into much detail about how Taiki is lost and found by Sansi and his life after he returns to the world of the Twelve Kingdoms. It also goes into greater detail about how he chose his king, which I definitely appreciated, as it was cut short in the anime and I was confused as to what was really going on. This cleared it up for me. The only problem is that the story stops very soon after the new king of Tai ascends to the throne. I can't wait to read more! And this volume was much shorter than the first. It was disappointing to finish it so quickly.

Another great installment of the fantasy series!

I became a huge fan of Twelve Kingdoms through the anime first. When I discovered that Tokyopop was translating the novels, I was elated because the anime covered less than half of the storyline from the novels. My only regret about this book is that I had to wait a year for it to be released since the release of the first novel.

Sea of Wind follows Taiki's story which was the second arc of the anime. The anime followed it very very closely with only minor changes and omissions. While the novel does not require the reader to have seen the anime, I think seeing the anime should encourage the viewer to get a more indepth look at the Twelve Kingdoms universe and read the novels.

What you do get in this novel is a better understanding of Taiki's thoughts as well as what makes him a unique kirin. Also, you get the perspective of other characters such as Sansi. Also the system and ways of the world of the twelve kingdoms are even further fleshed out. Taiki's time with Keiki is also further explored. The only people you will miss in this version of Taiki's story are Yoko and Kenro Shinkun, who really only served as bystanders in the anime anyhow.

The novel is quite vividly written and I daresay flows better than the first novel. Twelve Kingdoms is a great series to read for people interested in politics, fantasy, and just really good characterization. I cannot recommend it enough.

This book was a great read. Kept me interested the entire time. I can not understand why a mother would take the side of any man over there own flesh and blood, and then continue to traumatize that child for years, and when feel she done nothing wrong. I would have took her to the cleaners.

Captivating - Hard to put down!

Once you pick up Two Tears in a Bucket, it sticks to your heart! It's a hard-to-put-down, stay-up-all-night type of book! It gets personal and captivating as you get to know the characters. There is a wonderful flow throughout the book that makes it hard to pause reading at any point. This is my first reader from Traci Bee and Darnell King. I will have to find out what else they have out there.
