A SEARCH FOR MY FAVORITE BOOK

Years ago when I was still in high school, I bought the entire four book set, including the magic spells book. . . It was the best game book, I have ever enjoyed.

Yet, at one point I lent the first book to a friend and I never saw it again. BUT I HAVE THE OTHER BOOKS STILL . . . I only need the first. I have been on a dire search ever since!! If anyone reads this, and can help in any way . . . please tell me!!

Good way to get your kids reading

I bought this book and read the series when I was 10. I didn't read for "fun" or for "enjoyment" before then. Reading at that point in life was either homework or report cards. This is a great book as it has what all ten year olds want...heroes, monsters, magic, swords. It's not tolkien but it's a start. A great way for kids to get clued in on reading.

Great adventure choice! But you must get the other books .

The fourth and final volume of Steve Jackson's "Sorcery" adventures is by far the best, save for one minor gripe I have.

I love the way this book is written in simple language with minor puzzles to solve and highly entertaining adventures. This is, possibly, the most advanced of the "Choose Your Way" type books I've seen. The plot is very interesting and the rules easy to follow. One VERY nice touch is the little dice markers they include on the bottom of every page, so if you ever find yourself without dice (as if any gamer would find themselves in such a position, ha!), you can still play by doing a random "flip-through" to get a result.

Now for my one gripe about this book. It CANNOT stand on its own...you need to do the others first. While the start of the adventure still makes a certain amount of sense if you haven't read the first three, there are at least 40 entries out of 800 that reference the adventures from one of the first three books. And if you haven't read the first three, you won't be able to make the proper choices...and if you cheat and do, they won't make sense anyway. Some of these entries will even direct you to go back and start over from somewhere back in one of the previous three books!

So...as good a read and play as this is, don't START with this one. Make sure you manage to find the other three before reading this volume.

Gotta catch 'em all!

I warn you now i'm pretty biased: I virtually leant to read with the fighting fantasy books! The books in the Sorcery series have proved to be infuriatingly rare, I got the second and third books first, then a year later I managed to find and buy the one and only copy I have ever seen of the first and eventually found the last on at my local library. Then someone stole it! I haven't seen a copy of it since but have managed to order one now and will soon have the whole lot, yay!
It's not great literature in the normal sense, but it really captures your attention and draws you in; especially if you can start from the start and go right the way through! It's good enough for me and a lot better than some supposedly 'great' dross i've come across!

Quite simply, Steve Jackson's Sorcery! series is the finest the gamebook genre ever produced. With 800 entries, stylized artwork and exquisite writing, it put the entire Choose Your Own Adventure series to shame with its elequence and quality.

I feel fortunate to have collected the set, and if you have interest in fantasy gaming, I encourage you to find these books also.

"Cure By Crying" is at turns profound, sappy, powerful and disorganized. Its the worst piece of writing that I have ever read ten times. It is the story of how a man "cured" himself of emotional problems by uncovering and crying about repressed childhood traumas. The author, Thomas A. Stone, is obviously a genius at drawing insights out of his own emotional and mental experience. He has combined these insights with those of his "mentors" -- Freud, Janov (Primal Scream) and Hubbard (yes, L. Ron) -- to form a therapy that he modestly entitles "The Therapy". It is a serious, complete and straight-forward self-therapy, and may just help you understand and deal with your problems better. If you are interested in deep-feeling therapy or how the mind works, it is well worth the trouble.

Stone is an unsung genius

Most of us are raised by our parents and/or conditioned by society to repress our feelings. It's hard for many people to express their feelings verbally, much less as primal emotion. However, if you've come to believe that being more emotionally expressive is a good thing, this book can help you change those old patterns.

Thomas A. Stone is a remarkable man. In search of an effective therapy for himself, he figured out the methods in this book on his own - with no formal training beyond extensive reading at home (as noted by reviewer JSpeyrer, Stone studied some 250 therapies). His layman's theories on why only "spoonfuls" of emotion show up for release made sense to me.

Although I find some of Stone's methods somewhat cumbersome to learn, this book is still invaluable. I recommend you grab one now if you're at all interested and the dealer's price is not too silly (there are not many copies of this evidently self-published book floating around any more). For starters, just reading the book can give you more acceptance for crying.

One area where I disagree with Thomas: Emotional expression is not always just about crying. And for all his buckets of tears, Stone can have a curious detachment (he did not even seem to understand his own daughter's fear). He has a workmanlike attitude that can sometimes seem to ignore the pain of the emotions themselves.

But don't let that observation stop you from getting the book. He did not use a detached tone of voice to author the book. You'll find his tone refreshingly plain, honest, conversational, and encouraging. Stone also provides support to keep you healthy while you allow your crying to surface, and he discusses the necessary warnings so you can go about it safely.

It's a shame that Stone and his book are not more widely recognized. Sure, there are places you can go (eg., Primal Institute) and people you can pay (eg., breathwork therapists) to help you do similar release work, but that takes money. Which is why Stone came to develop his methods and write the book - he couldn't afford a stint at the Primal Institute. And his therapist got bored listening to him cry.

I really enjoyed the section in the back of the book where Thomas, his wife Nancy, daughter Beth and son David, all talk candidly about their individual processes with the Cure by Crying techniques. I couldn't help but feel affection for this family and wonder how they're all doing now.

Excellent way to cure many ills, cry. More men should just do just that. Only some, even now, "hold back a tear". I used to. This alone only holds in the pain and unclear feelings--balderdash on that.
LIVE with the difficult moment, CRY, HEAL. It works for me every day.
As for the author's writing style, I, could say it works well enough. He speaks from the heart while espousing heartfelt emotions. That would make anyone wordy, an honest author included. This the point here, isn't it?
I love this man for his strength and his sharing. Thank you Mr. Thomas A. Stone, sir.

One Of The Best Books Ever Written Obout Therapy/ Psychology

Review Date: 2002-06-07
Well, me and my wife have been using this method for about 10 months. We have sessions about twice a week. My wife is on her 94th session. So, does it work? YES!! My wife has seen many symptoms improve. Depression and headaches are the two symptoms that have improved dramatically. Her ability to stand up for herself has also improved dramatically. I should mention that my wife cries easily. She cried within five minutes of the first session. Keep in mind this therapy takes commitment and time, but it is worth it.

On the down side, I have been unable to cry and have given up on this method. I tried following the book for about six months. Could not cry once. What this means is that *some* people's ability to cry is severely damaged, and this therapy will be extremely difficult for people like me. But I hope others (like my wife) will benefit from it.

However, even failure can lead to a cure. I began looking for an alternate therapy to get me kick started. I discovered a new therapy called "Redirecting Self Therapy". Can't provide a link here, but it is bringing many years of suffering to a rapid end.

Also, this book lists all the great discoveries (in psychology) made in the last few decades. It is an excellent primer on regressive therapies in general. If I had to recommned only one book on psychology, this is it.

If you want to know more about the importance of feeling pain and crying as a means of healing your neuroses, this is a rare book to read. I found valuable practical information on how to help myself and others to cry. In addition to the book by Jean Jenson: Reclaiming yourself, it helped me in my healing process.

No such thing as "SUB-conscience"

This is a very good daily devotional. I just have one very big disappointment in it, in that it refers to "sub-conscience". That's a man's term which did not come from the Bible nor from God. There is no such thing. There is habit and there is conscience, but the Bible NEVER refers to SUB-sonscience. In man's infinite sinful nature and the want to be God, he thirsts for knowledge which only takes him further from God because any knowledge about our behaviors that's not found in the Bible, is not from God. So take this devotional and be like those of us who like watermelon, eat what's good and spit out the seeds.

Pastor Evans was our interim minister for a short time. However,
I did not learn of his many publications until after he left our congregation (he's a wonderfully, humble and sincere Christian).

This is my favorite devotional. I have read through it many times. Each time something new is revealed through Glyn's interpretation with associated bible excerpts. I have given this book as a gift to several friends. They all have responded that the book seems to be speaking with them personally as they travel on the course to follow Christ.

This is one of the best devotionals I have ever read. Each day is a new "awakening" towards knowing GOD and daily living and putting the two together in harmony. Mr. Evans tells of life as we live it each day and adds a blessing. I highly recommed it. I am going to buy it for all my friends for Christmas.

Starting with the very first topic "Owning Nothing, Enjoying Everything," this book avoids the trite and anecdotal format that so many "daily devotional" books fall into, and gets right to the point, specifically, that the true battle of Armageddon is fought daily in the heart of man, and that the real pitfalls that face the believer are also found within.

Though different in style, this rates among my two favorite devotional books, along with the classic MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST, by Oswald Chambers. This is not a book of "formulas" for spiritual success, but rather a highly insightful travel-log into the heart of a man who is struggling in faith to allow the kingdom of God to be realized in his inner being, and who isn't afraid to expose the very real difficulties he encounters, and his utter dependence upon God, to God, or to his fellow man. Anyone who makes the journey with him, will be blessed to have come along.

Okay, so they spelled Stephen King's name wrong on the cover. So, what? If found this book fascinating and entertaining at the same time. It is filled with stories by famous authors, both past and present. The one that sticks out the most is Ramsey Campbell's "The Nearest to a Ghost." He goes to the cemetery to scatter his mother's ashes and feels a powerful sense of grief that isn't his own. The feeling vanishes after a moment, his own grief returning. Creepy, huh? This is one of about thirty true-life experiences these people came face-to-face with. A great read.

For either those that have been loving typography for many years, or those that just recently have fallen infatuated. This exhaustive documentation of type-crafting minutiae is a MUST-have for reference and obsessive appreciation of classic forms and details.

Karen's careful eye will help you dissect all the classics... Perhaps even discover missed aspects of a much-visited serif, perhaps finally understanding the commonality of a specific "m" proportion, perhaps understand the evolution of "g"...

Many hours of delight await for you within its pages. Get it.

Anyone who is serious about Design and Typography will appreciate this book. It is a perfect compliment to Bringhurst's "Elements of Typographic Style." What Bringhurst does for typographic composition Cheng does for letter-form design. More imagery than text, she presents a deep exploration and comparison of typographic forms from the major historic periods. Whether you are interested in composing your own typeface or simply seeking deeper understanding of typography, this is an outstanding reference. This one should be on every designer's bookshelf. - db

A Classic Text on Type Design

Review Date: 2007-10-02
Absolutely a must have for aspiring and junior typeface or logo designers. However, the book is not an easy read; it should be read cover to cover with patience before being used as a workbook reference. Its text requires a sound prior knowledge of typography and related technologies. And it must be read in tandem with close observation of the numerous illustrations and diagrams to be fully understood and appreciated. The information shared by the author is not available elsewhere unless one attends graduate school in type design or apprentices to a type designer. I had completed my first roman & small cap font before I acquired this book and hadn't started my companion italic yet. And though the author doesn't cover italic type design her thoroughness in her analytical and comparative approach is such that I have the book open like a workbook for every italic character and am redrawing some of my romans. I've been teaching graphic design for 30 years and though so much has changed the fundamental and essential have not though they have evolved. This book will become a classic for serious professionals because of the level of insight that it gives into the essentials of type design.

Most typography books I've seen are showcases of designers and their client projects. These books may have their place for readers who are seeking inspiration and brief but helpful tips for project management. However, none of these books discuss the actual nuts and bolts of creating fonts. Cheng's book fills this gap by focusing only on typographic design, and does so in such a highly informative way that anyone who designs fonts cannot afford to be without it. Not only are all the individual aspects of type examined, but different fonts are compared and contrasted to reveal their sometimes very subtle differences. Cheng showcases many examples of her own students' work as well so the reader can see creative applications of typographical principles. A brief but highly valuable section on punctuation is also included. The only caveat I have to offer potential readers is that this book does not cover cursive fonts, which makes sense and isn't worth deducting a star for. In all, this book is the one you need if you want to make your own fonts. Amazon currently only has it available through third party sellers so get it while you still can!

Whether you are a novice seeking to learn the fundamentals of banking, or an active professional who has just encountered an unusual term, you will want this book. Each definition is short (only a paragraph or so), but most contain links to other terms, so the reader can gain a progressively deeper understanding of how terms interrelate. I also like the frequent inclusion of dates (e.g., the year a particular law was passed). The definitions are authoritative--based on a number of leading accounting, banking, and financial entities identified in the introduction. It's worth far more than its bargain price. I look forward to the next edition (Year 2000?). Keep up the good work!

I bought this book for my 5-year old son and a second one for his classroom at day care. I was saddened to see how early in life children become competitive, and tried to express the many complicated topics around competition (that winning is not everything, the value of the experience is most important, you can lose and still have achieved something) and feel that this book meant more to my son than all my hours of explanations. I am grateful to Erica Silverman for writing this thoughtful book that is also very much fun to read and beautifully illustrated. I HIGHLY recommend it to any parent whose child has become sad or frustrated at losing. This book will make them laugh while they learn some important life lessons.

This is one of the finest picture books our family and friends have ever experienced. We were so bowled over by this work that it's difficult to know where to start. To the extent that the author is an accomplished and successful artist, it is an understatement to suggest that the colorful, engaging art is superb -- the more you study each panel, the more you see. As for the story, it's truly a gem -- a finely spun tale of fantasy, with a satisfying lesson for young readers. The heir to throne in a mystical land of elves, unicorns, and wise owls must confront the fierce, flying, fire-breathing dragon, with ramifications of significance to the young prince, the angry dragon, and the kingdom between the worlds. It's a fable filled with mystery, adventure, fantasy, and intrigue artfully told without frightening young readers or glorifying violence. Treat yourself to this remarkable work -- you and children will not be disappointed!

As the young Queen of Lugin, Briana, is giving birth to her very first child, away in the not-so-distant forest, a strange hatchling is born to a beautiful green dragon. The Queen's son, now known as Prince Langilor, is not what was expected, for he is shy, and gentle. While the young dragon, Saras, is also what was not expected, for he becomes a pompous bully, who attacks the dragon clan after learning how to breathe fire and fly. When he turns twelve, Prince Langilor is told by the Royal Advisors that he must protect the kingdom from Saras, in order to prove his worth as the future King. He doubts himself, but soon realizes that he may be able to defeat Saras, when he meets with a beautiful white swan who tells him to conquer the dragon and claim his throne.

I have been a HUGE fan of Jody Bergsma's illustrations for quite some time now, but with DRAGON, she proves that she is an extremely skilled and talented author as well. Her wonderful prose is enchanting, while the illustrations are utterly breathtaking. This is a book that can't be missed.

I love the illustrations and how Bergsma used the Celtic symbols and fantasy plot to weave a fascinating and engaging tale. Since I am a fan of fantasy books and anything that inspire the imagination, this story is truly one of my favorite picture books! Besides, it has a wonderful message about working together and finding peace with one's enemy that anyone can relate to.

This was the ideal book for me! Thanks to this book, I can draw better than I ever imagined possible!

Ames' provides good, clear instructions. Beagles, basenjis, bulldogs and Germans shepherds are fun to draw. Any dog with a curly tail is fun to draw. Readers are also treated to a brief history of each breed on the bottom of each page.

Now, I wish there was a book (or maybe there is and I just don't know about them) of drawing classic cars. How to draw a 1964 Ford Falcon - how cool is that!

I must admit that for me it takes a bit of work to draw realistic and 3 dimensional pictures. But using the 'Draw 50' books are so very, very easy to use! Lee J. Ames's drawing method is simple with the step-by-step instructions which are easy to follow. For kids 9 and older, "Draw 50 Dogs" by Lee J. Ames is great for drawing in your scrapbook, onto your notebooks, on cards, etc.

As the title says, this book includes instructions to draw 50 dogs; all of the 50 are different breeds and types. For me I love the portraits though I also love to draw dogs running or posing. My favorite pictures to draw are most probably the 'Irish Wolfhound', 'Cairn Terrier', 'German Shepherd Dog', 'Cocker Spaniel', and 'English Setter'. The book has another nice touch which is at the bottom of each drawing, there is some information on that dog including a brief history of the breed, average weight and height of the dog, and coat and color of the dog. Extremely helpful especially if you are thinking of coloring your drawing afterwards or would like to know how big to draw the dog when putting it in a background. My only complaint that there isn't a picture of a papillon to draw which I would like to (the reason? I have a papillon for a pet!).

Of course all of the "Draw 50" series are great, be sure to check them all out! The books I want are "Draw 50 Athletes", "Draw 50 Cats", "Draw 50 Cars, Trucks, and Motorcycles", and "Draw 50 Famous Faces".

Wondering which breeds are in here?

I bought this book hoping there would be a picture of a weim or a similar breed. I got lucky, there is a weim! It does look incredibly easy to follow, but I know what dog lovers want to know: is MY breed in there? so here's a list:

The book is divided into "groups". The Hound group has Afghan, Basenji (sitting), Basset, Beagle, Black & Tan, Bloodhound (sitting), Borzoi, Dachshund (smooth), Greyhound (running), Irish Wolfhound (running). The Terrier group has Airedale, Bedlington, Bull Terrier, Cairn, Dandie Dinmont, Wire Fox, Kerry Blue, Scottish, Sealyham & a Westie (sitting). The Working group is actually the CKC working & herding combined, and has Malamute, Boxer (running), Rough Collie (running), Doberman (play bow), GSD (head shot), Great Dane, Mastiff, OES, Corgi (Pembroke), St. Bernard (lying down), Samoyed, Sheltie, Standard Schnauzer. The Sporting has Cocker (looks like American, is "sitting pretty"), English Setter (head shot), Golden Retriever, Irish Setter, Pointer, Weim. The Irish, Pointer & Weim are on point. The Non-sporting includes the Toy breeds: Bichon, Boster Terrier, Bulldog, Chow, Dalmatian (sitting), Lhasa Apso, Standard Poodle (continental cut I think), Chihuahua, Pomeranian, Pug, Yorkie. All the breeds which can have cropped or natural ears have cropped ears in these drawings.

I agree with the other reviews, this is a great book in the series. If you have an interest in drawing or know someone who does, you'll find these books to be very useful. My daughter had brought some home from the library & asked for me to buy them. They go step by step with you,in no time you'll have a wonderful picture!

This book examines objectively the use of MDMA ("Ecstasy," "mole") in the US and Europe. Saunders reviews many aspects of the drug and its culture (eg his personal experience, history, psychological dangers, social effects, safety, psychotherapy and much more). While the majority of readers probably use the drug or are thinking about using, non-users should read this work as well (it was recomended to me by a fellow parent who had bought it after learning that her 20 yearold son had begun using MDMA). Saunders did not recieve much publicity b/c of the taboo subject, although many reviewers and critics personally thanked him for a well written, informative book.

I recommend it, but...

This book is excellent and I agree with all the other people that have reviewed it in a positive way. However, what surprised me is that Nicholas included very little about the bad effects of Ecstasy, such as first-time user panic attacks, negative effects that might occur (anxiety, claustrophobia, fear of others, midweek crash, etc.) I agree totally with him that E should have never been made illegal, but I feel that he was (rest in peace) so passionate about the good part of E that he forgot that E has a definite downside. Ignoring this downside can make some readers think that E is ALL positive. I recommend this book because still it's very informative and obviously well-researched, I just want potential readers (and E users) to keep in mind that Ecstasy is a strong substance that should be used with respect.

Of all the books on MDMA I've read this is by far the best. Very well organized and goes through everything concerning MDMA from its legal status to the chemistry behind it. The text is very easy to understand even for those who do not know much about this subject. All his statements are backed by solid evidence derived from independent research and real life stories. Saunders gives the reader a chance to decide for himself, rather than telling the reader 'This is what I looked up so this is what I think, and therefore what you think as well'. I would recommend this book to everyone. The author has dedicated his life to this subject, as indicated by the quality of his work.

A very informative book on E

Saunders, a brilliant and inquisitive man, writes of his experiences, research, and overall knoweledge of MDMA. From the chemical make-up to the trafficing of the drug, Saunders tackles the entire realm of Ecstasy and its culture. A must read for anyone curious about the subject - #1 Thesis on Ecstasy
