The Book of Agreement: An Inspiring Gift!Review Date: 2003-03-26
Stewart Levine's capacity to provide a means by which conflicts can be resolved, not only allows the reader the ability to do so for him/herself, but it also provides great insight into understanding (which is a wonderful gift).
It's all about the agreementsReview Date: 2003-03-31
From the author of "Teamwork Is An Individual Skill"Review Date: 2003-04-11
Stuart Levine's first book "Getting to Resolution" is the best I've read on resolving conflict. I think I know a thing or two about agreements. So I read the review copy of this new book, supplied by his publicist, with mixed emotion. I know and love Stewart, we have the same publisher, I'm thrilled his great second book is out, and he taught me good stuff about resolving conflict (we also shared an excellent glass of Merlot last year in Santa Fe, but that's a story for another day). But, just what can Levine teach this veteran partnering consultant about making and keeping agreements?
A thing or two, it turns out.
Let's start with what's critical to learn if you don't already know it.
Consider Levine's Principle #2, "We work and live in a 'sea' (context) of agreements." Do you realize all
relationship behavior is governed by implicit or explicit agreements? Someone can't even push your hot-buttons unless you
and they have established by implicit agreement that "those" buttons are indeed hot and that you will explode if they are
tweaked in a certain way. And you know "Shhh, don't tell a soul"
implicitly means "keep this to yourself as well as I'm
keeping it to myself." Even a chain of command is full of implicit agreements about norms like who can and can't tell whom
what to do, who can and can't evaluate another's performance, who can and can't make decisions, etc. If you've worked in one
hierarchy, you pretty much can move from organization to organization and quickly grasp the nuances of the culture. Why? Because
you understand, experientially, the sea of implicit agreements.
You buy into, if not invent, these implicit agreements, and then live by them whether you like it or not. It's your own doing. So you might then consider Levine's Principle #3, "We never learned the essential elements of an effective agreement." I believe people clamor for control because they lack the learned power of agreement-making. It's much easier to just boss folks around. But it's far more powerful and rewarding to make what Levine calls "agreements for results." That's a lot of what TeamWisdom (a term from my work) is about.
So what do you do? You learn the essential elements of an effective agreement, then put them to use. Repeat. Improve. Repeat. Improve. Levine shows you how.
Just as he did in his first book, Levine gives us the foundation first and the practice second. He starts with the Basic Law of Agreement ("Collaboration is established in language by making implicit and explicit agreements"), then offers ten principles, and then ten elements of effective agreements. Elements include things like roles, time and value, measures of satisfaction, etc. Later in the book, he uses these ten elements to fashion templates and illustrate agreements for different situations (like employment agreements, sales agreements, performance appraisal agreements, feedback agreements, and many more).
The strength of this book is in combining his original concepts with his applications. For instance Levine
identifies the difference between agreements for protecting your interests and agreements for results. The first is what you
hire lawyers to do in writing contracts; he knows,
Levine practiced law for years. He shows you how to make agreements
for results and protect your interests. Levine also provides application after application after application. More than half
the book is devoted to templates for agreements for results in organizations, associations, communities, families, cultures,
marriages, and more. Be sure to practice the new Levine U MBA -- managing by agreement. You'll also want to read his section
on training your lawyer how to make agreements for results.
The Book of Agreement makes a terrific companion to "Teamwork Is An Individual Skill: Getting Your Work Done When Sharing Responsibility"

The best book I ever readReview Date: 2008-01-18
I have two copies of this book. I had to get a second one because I highlighted the first one so much. I return to this book often, especially when I'm thinking "What the heck just happened?" and finding my issues and the roles others played. I glean something from it everytime but only what layer I can comprehend at the moment, which is why I read it a couple of times a year. It's still an eye-opener.
Always the codependent, I have given away several copies to friends and loved ones coping with difficult issues in the hopes that others will gain understanding as I have. All copies are given with love as I believe this book to be the best book I have ever read, and I want to share it with the world.
The sequel isn't out yet as far as I know. Terry Kellogg has a website with a book listing but "Broken Silence" isn't on the list. Kellogg's book Family Matters : Principles & Roles of Family (Kellogg Harrison Family & Relationship Series) is a continuation of his work in family systems and the roles of family members. It is also an excellent book and builds upon the information in Broken Toys. Read it when you are ready for more detailed information. I still like Broken Toys best because it's basic and succint.

A Child of the King - A Story of God's Adopted Children and the Spiritual Battle Between Good and EvilReview Date: 2005-09-28
This book shows two worlds, good and evil, and shows the wars of truth and lies raging between them. The characters of God's three persons, Satan, and Christians are marvelously portrayed in this story.
In my personal opinion, I think this book should have a sequel. I can see it becoming a trilogy like Lord of the Rings. Yet, sadly, Bill Bright is gone, and Marion R. Wells has not written more. Perhaps it was never meant to have a sequel, and perhaps they left it for imaginations to soar.
Pretty good reading here.Review Date: 2003-06-30
"[The authors] take us to a place that seems familiar, yet full of suspense and mystery. The authors bring us to a world that pits good against evil in the larger-than-life kingdoms of Prince Morning Star and Prince Abaddon. Read as these mighty rulers battle for the hearts of Jotham and the people of Withershins."

Great, Just One Annoying Defect (1994 edition)Review Date: 2004-09-14
The publisher seems to have done an excellent job as far as appearance. The clarity of type, etc., is excellent. However, if you use an Accent style bible highlighter, it smears and smudges really bad, especially in areas where the type is bolder or closer together (like in some of the back reference sections). This may be the case (likely is considering the general smudginess of the print) for other highlighters as well but I haven't tried them.
It's like the ink never fully dries. Even if you just rub it with a slighly moist (pretty much like normal if you're holding a pen or moving around at all) finger, it smudges very easily.
So although this is an incredibly helpful and excellent work overall, this one defect is frustrating to me. Perhaps other editions don't have this defect but you might want to give it a little smudge-test in the store before buying it anywhere.
A great resource!Review Date: 2005-01-18
That may sound complicated, but it is SO WORTH the digging.
If you get this book, you still need the Strong's and a KJV Bible to refer to... the shovels needed to get to the gold.

Hidden TreasureReview Date: 2006-09-21
It is the second part of the 2 parts and I had some trouble before I was able to get hold of the 1st half. I thought that having already read the 2nd half first it would spoil the the opening, but I was wrong. That is fabulous as well. " A gathering of Heros" is nearly as good, and "Ingulf the Mad" is not quite as good but is still well worth the read. I wish I could get a copy of his unpublished book "The King Who Was of Old".
The Dark Border - King Chondos' RideReview Date: 2003-11-12
But if you need the sequel (and you will!) you'll need to get your hands on "The Gathering Of Heroes".
While "The Lost Prince" focused more on the events of the twin princes, and slightly on some military leaders, this novel tends to reverse the situation. You still get your heroics in the many different battles fought, lost and won, however I found the war to be slightly less gripping than the escapism of Chondos.
The beauty of these books are the depth. You can read them several times, and always be enamored as much as the first time you read it. One beautiful aspect is that Paul has created situations where conflict arises in places where (under different circumstances) friendship ought to exist.
Istvan (the Archer) Di'Vega, hero of the school of the five swords and Martos, student of Istvan's long
and dear friend, are placed in charge of armies that war against each other, both knowing the futility of the situation, both
being in total awe of the other, and both knowing that the evil force across the border are unnervingly still - as if they
were allowing the war to continue.
But when they finally meet the circumstances are so outrageous that they battle each
other for their life.
There is no third book!Review Date: 2003-06-17
"I wrote the ending first," Paul once said, "after reading 'The Defence of Guenevre.' The book was written to lead to the ending."
Paul refers to the
poem by William Morris. The Defence of Guenevre" The poem ends with Arthur's courtiers straining to hear an approaching sound:
"Her cheeks grew crimson, as the headlong speed
Of the roan charger drew all men to see
The knight who came was Launcelot in good need."
The deliberate understatement is stronger than any melodrama. Nor is anything more needed. Aside from the fact that Morris could count on his Victorian readers to know that Guenevre would be rescued, the arrival of a champion is enough to complete the poem. In her defence, Guenevre complains that she is unfairly damned because she was given a choice between two mighty lovers. Put on trial by one of those lovers, she is in despair. The coming of Launcelot, the second one, gives her hope.
With that in mind, can there truly be any doubt as to the outcome?
