As someone who is just beginning in botanical illustration, I could not find a better instructional book. The author teaches you what materials to buy, what typse of paper to use, and leads you step-by-step through a number of lessons covering several different types of media.

I could not believe how well my first efforts turned out! I've looked through a lot of drawing books, and this is by far the best I've come across if you are interested in botanical drawing.

Great and Beautiful Manual!

It is a beautiful book with easy to follow instructions arranged in a very organized way to help a student progress step by step. The spiral binding inside the traditional binding cover also makes it really easy to actually use this manual. It stays open flat on your table for easy reference while not looking cheap when standing in a bookcase. This book is actually worth buying and keeping. Unlike a lot of others, it doesn't disappoint and is truly informative rather than just being another pretty flower book.

If you want to learn to draw and paint flowers and plants from a botanist point of view, this is probably a great book for you. I have the DVD that can be purchased to go with this book and it is also great. Bente Starke King is an incredible artist with an impressive background in botanical illustration. She begins with teaching about basic form and perspective and then teaches about the use of graphite pencil in botanical drawing and how to depict a 3-D surface using 2 step-by-step demonstrations. Next, the book progresses to Pen and Ink with two stepped demonstrations. Next, you learn ink wash and again, demonstrations are given. Chapter 5 is Transparent Watercolor and 7 step-by-step demonstrations are given. Chapter 6 is Mixed Media, where watercolor is combined with other media such as pen and ink and colored pencils, along with 6 step-by-step demonstrations. The end of the book ties the loose ends by including how to choose a mat, framing, exhibiting,
copyright, etc..

This a beautiful book that can teach you a lot about drawing and painting flowers and plants. It is well-designed and written. I like the way Bente King combines the medias and demonstrates how this method enhances the richness and textures. Her DVD is excellent. I would recommend buying both the book and DVD if you want to speed up your progress. She is a wonderful teacher.

This gorgeous, well-written "how to" book for drawing and painting
beautiful botanicals is a treasure! It is spiral bound so the book won't flip closed on you. It is written by Bente Starcke King, a Botanical Illustrator who teaches at Cornell University. She covers everything from form and perspective, materials that she uses in her demonstrations, and beautiful illustrations.

She covers, with clear, easy-to-follow instructions, lessons in drawing with graphite pencil, using pen and ink, ink wash, transparent watercolor and mixed media. It's like having an instructor in a book, and you can go at your own pace.

The most fascinating aspect to me is how she layers watercolors to create her luminous color illustrations. Fabulous.

Whomever thought of the spiral binding inside the traditional binding should be knighted. That was a stroke of genius. If I am trying a new technique, I usually scan and copy a page but with this book, I just leave it open.

Bente's book would be useless (as well constructed as it is,) if it weren't for her terrific explanations. She shows the same painting in different stages, tells the reader where she or he can take short cuts and is over-all a great book for the beginning or advanced student.

As a student of Dr. Steven Culberts', I studied Zen Buddhist influences on Japanese Corporate Culture. And in so doing, I learned the true meaning of Dr. Culberts' work--the beauty in nature, the predictable and baffling nature of humans. Dr. Culberts' books read like fine poetry and thoughtful philosophy tightly wrapped into the cacoon of humanity. Our deepest emotions and most unspoken desires are revealed in a disarming fashion. You would do well to read his work. Sincerely, James Giries

This volume of the Routledge History of the Ancient World by Cornell is simply brillant. I read it three times and I will surely read it again. It provides a fascinating comparison between the myths and legends of archaic Rome and the reality that lies behind it. One of the most beautiful examples is the part when Cornell analyses the historic bases of a figure like the Roman king Servius Tullus. He cites a stunning piece of scholarship of the emperor Claudius where he explains to his fellow Romans that Servius Tullus was called by the Estruscan Macstarna (which may mean in Latin "Magister" signifying that he was the right hand of the king serving as a magister equitus at that time of his career), information that lets you "feel history" when Cornell then makes you look at a drawing of an Estruscan wall painting showing possibly this Macstarna involved in some action of killing enemies. Everytime when I read this passage of the book I get a chicken skin...to my mind the author really understands to tell a story out of some facts that may themselves be rather dry.

An informative and thorough discussion of the history of early Rome. "The Early History of Rome" provides an intense discussion of archaeological and legendary evidence and attempts, with great success, to separate actual history from the legends. A must have book for any student of Rome and of things Roman. A standing ovation to T.J. Cornell for an excellent study.

First rate scholarly work

This is an excellent book that I think is primarily intended for a scholarly audience (experts in the field, professional historians and archaeologists, etc.) but is also very valuable to an interested amateur like myself.

Cornell goes through the early history of Rome and sets out what the evidence is and what we can reliably conclude from it. One of the best features of the book is his willingness, all too rare even among scholars, to recognize when the evidence is inconclusive and to admit that we have no way of knowing the answer to a particular question. He is also clear about the limitations of archaeological data, and recognizes the way it is often misused to support historical theses when, in fact, it is rather the histoprical ideas that allow for the interpretation of the archaeologucal data in the first place.

However, while Cornell is pretty good about presenting the narrative historical tradition, the book generally covers the history with fairly large brushstrokes and jumps from one large topic to another without trying to string together a coherent narrative. Because of this, this book is best used as a second reference on early Roman history. That is, it shouldn't be the first book you read on the topic. I think you'd be best served by first reading a good narrative history to provide the framework, and then read this work to fill in the details and show up any inaccuracies.

It is well written and suprisingly readable, not at all dry. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who has some knowledge of early Roman history but would like to learn more about the "state of the art" in that field.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. And I do not mean just books about ancient Rome or history books. I have read it three times and just for the kick of it. I am neuroscientist and not a classical scholar but I love history and this is history writing at its best: scholarly, fair, witty, and elegantly written (sometimes donwright dazzling). Cornell lets the readers into his secret cabinet and shows them the raw materials the professional historian works with. Amazingly, this does not detract from the magic of the "story" but makes it all the more enthralling. Don't walk run and buy this book!

Excellent background on the beginnings of Rome

A book that was much needed in the field. Scholarly but not overly pedantic and certainly not impenetrable.
The author relies much archeology and offers no easy solutions to theoretical problems.
The conclusions offered are in various shades of gray depending on the reliability and amount of evidence. However the reader should be aware that certain theories are being pushed here with which many might disagree.
Rome certainly did not come from a monolithic source and the author provides a survey of the many cultures that inhabited that peninsula as well as the outside civilizations that colonized it. However the book is not without certain controversies.
One of the author's great strengths in this book is his knowledge of current archaeological discoveries Etruria and in Latium as well as period of orientalization and early Iron Age. Thus, the book's greatest strength is its careful synthesis of historical and archaeological data for the period preceding the republic; and it is likewise excellent concerning Roman external affairs and conquest of Italy. Perhaps the books biggest weakness is its insufficiently critical treatment of the ancient literary sources .
The book's 15 chapters are methodically presented and are augmented with very helpful illustrations and tables. A brief overview of human culture in Italy from the Bronze Age to the early Iron Age. The author's treatment of the importance of ascribing cultural difference between inhumation and cremation I personally found somewhat controversial.
In this reviewers opinion he rightly dismisses some of the value of the written tradition of the formation of Rome.
Further controversy is raised in chapter four with the authors contention that the clan did not proceed the city-state and heroic graves but were enmeshed together. It does give one something to think about.
Yet another controversy offered in this book which personally I take issue with is the minimization of the influence of the Etruscans on Roman culture.
Actually there is quite a bit to chew on here yet I do not what to dissuade the reader form picking it up. Just be aware that there is a lot of theory in this book some of which many academics might take issue.
One thing the book successfully establishes is that by the beginning of the early third century B.C. Rome had acquired the political structure which laid the foundations for its later greatness.

One would hope the reader after being inspired by this volume would look into authors that offer equally compelling alternative theories.
Highly recommended.

I am probably a biased reviewer knowing the Alexander-Azlin family for about 4 years, but this book is very emotionally moving. I was teary eyed at some points, which should say a lot about the book coming from a guy who usually is an emotionless stone. I am a slow reader and usually it takes me three months to read a book, I read this 500+ page book in just over a week. You will not regret buying this book.

This tragic story of a normal American family's fight against cancer holds on to one thought from beginning to end - God will never abandon us nor stop loving us - ever! Mara's outstanding book includes her inner dialogue along with diary entries that enlighten the reader into feeling they are there with her every step of the way - the highs and the lows; the good and the bad days. This book is beautifully written and an inspiration - filled with information on the National Bone Marrow Donor Foundation as well as an account of the modern day heroes and heroines that pulled together in a time of tragedy.

Add this book to your shelf of most important references--like your dictionary and your "Windows for Idiots" guide--and consult it often. Your life, relationships, and career will improve immeasurably.

Stuart Levine's first book "Getting to Resolution" is the best I've read on resolving conflict. I think I know a thing or two about agreements. So I read the review copy of this new book, supplied by his publicist, with mixed emotion. I know and love Stewart, we have the same publisher, I'm thrilled his great second book is out, and he taught me good stuff about resolving conflict (we also shared an excellent glass of Merlot last year in Santa Fe, but that's a story for another day). But, just what can Levine teach this veteran partnering consultant about making and keeping agreements?

A thing or two, it turns out.

Let's start with what's critical to learn if you don't already know it.

Consider Levine's Principle #2, "We work and live in a 'sea' (context) of agreements." Do you realize all relationship behavior is governed by implicit or explicit agreements? Someone can't even push your hot-buttons unless you and they have established by implicit agreement that "those" buttons are indeed hot and that you will explode if they are tweaked in a certain way. And you know "Shhh, don't tell a soul"
implicitly means "keep this to yourself as well as I'm keeping it to myself." Even a chain of command is full of implicit agreements about norms like who can and can't tell whom what to do, who can and can't evaluate another's performance, who can and can't make decisions, etc. If you've worked in one hierarchy, you pretty much can move from organization to organization and quickly grasp the nuances of the culture. Why? Because you understand, experientially, the sea of implicit agreements.

You buy into, if not invent, these implicit agreements, and then live by them whether you like it or not. It's your own doing. So you might then consider Levine's Principle #3, "We never learned the essential elements of an effective agreement." I believe people clamor for control because they lack the learned power of agreement-making. It's much easier to just boss folks around. But it's far more powerful and rewarding to make what Levine calls "agreements for results." That's a lot of what TeamWisdom (a term from my work) is about.

So what do you do? You learn the essential elements of an effective agreement, then put them to use. Repeat. Improve. Repeat. Improve. Levine shows you how.

Just as he did in his first book, Levine gives us the foundation first and the practice second. He starts with the Basic Law of Agreement ("Collaboration is established in language by making implicit and explicit agreements"), then offers ten principles, and then ten elements of effective agreements. Elements include things like roles, time and value, measures of satisfaction, etc. Later in the book, he uses these ten elements to fashion templates and illustrate agreements for different situations (like employment agreements, sales agreements, performance appraisal agreements, feedback agreements, and many more).

The strength of this book is in combining his original concepts with his applications. For instance Levine identifies the difference between agreements for protecting your interests and agreements for results. The first is what you hire lawyers to do in writing contracts; he knows,
Levine practiced law for years. He shows you how to make agreements for results and protect your interests. Levine also provides application after application after application. More than half the book is devoted to templates for agreements for results in organizations, associations, communities, families, cultures, marriages, and more. Be sure to practice the new Levine U MBA -- managing by agreement. You'll also want to read his section on training your lawyer how to make agreements for results.

The Book of Agreement makes a terrific companion to "Teamwork Is An Individual Skill: Getting Your Work Done When Sharing Responsibility"

The characters in The Book of Reuben take on a life of their own. Reuben is an imperfect perfection. He takes life on its own terms and does the best he can do with it. He is highly moral in an immoral world when ironically the "religious" characters are the most immoral. I came away from this book and from One on One, aware that that they were written in raw, nuts and bolts language, but still seemed to reveal an underlying etheralness. The allusions reveal wide reading and living and experiencing that make the books richer. The books are well worth reading!

A Child of the King is a very well written book. It happens in the land of Withershins, where Prince Abbadon reigns. Jotham, a boy reaching maturity, lives at the orphange at Flotsam Manor. He always suspects that unseen eyes are spying him, and thus earns him the reputation of "weirdo". Yet Jotham is very skilled at his craft in woodworking, and his imagination comes alive in it. After moving to Acraisia, Jotham learns of a King in the land of Dominus that will adopt him and be a father to those who have no father. Jotham sets out to find this King and his son, Prince Morning Star. Yet Jotham's friends, Alfric and Gwyneth, try to persuade him otherwise, that all he hears is just lies.
This book shows two worlds, good and evil, and shows the wars of truth and lies raging between them. The characters of God's three persons, Satan, and Christians are marvelously portrayed in this story.
In my personal opinion, I think this book should have a sequel. I can see it becoming a trilogy like Lord of the Rings. Yet, sadly, Bill Bright is gone, and Marion R. Wells has not written more. Perhaps it was never meant to have a sequel, and perhaps they left it for imaginations to soar.

Pretty good reading here.

The story's main character is Jotham. He learned to be a wood crafter while in the orphanage and then began work in Acrasia. The back of the book describes it best:

"[The authors] take us to a place that seems familiar, yet full of suspense and mystery. The authors bring us to a world that pits good against evil in the larger-than-life kingdoms of Prince Morning Star and Prince Abaddon. Read as these mighty rulers battle for the hearts of Jotham and the people of Withershins."

**** Here is a book that will lift your heart and strengthen your faith. I enjoyed every minute I spent within the pages of this novel and am happy to recommend it. ****

Truth by Allegory

Biblical truths can often be taught more effectively via a a fictional story than the normal teaching and preaching we usually experience. Christ set the example for us by telling stories to teach His truths. Bill Bright and Marion Wells have followed that example in a profoundly effective way in this book. The illustrations of God's love, forgiveness, redemption and restoration have put a whole new focus on theological concepts I've intellectually understood for many years, but perhaps not deeply experienced in my heart. Reading this allegory I sensed a new and deeper understanding of God's heart, of how He really feels about me as His child. Prince Morning Star's interactions with Jotham in areas of trial and temptation I likewise experience has given me a whole new perspective on what it really means to have a victorious personal relationship with Christ--to be a child of the King!

Collaboratively written Bill Bright and M. R. Wells, A Child Of The King is a fantastic and entertaining tale set in the mystical land of Withershins. A simple orphan's quest to find his father plunges him into an inexorable tidal wave of dark machinations, kings, princes, power struggles, and a great deal more in this magnificently engaging and fully satisfying fable.

This little New Testament includes one of the most thorough studies of the basic Christian principles that I have ever seen. The Master Outlines by Porter Barrington guide the reader through the truths of God using scripture. I encourage every Christian to get one of these for the Master Outline study and then get a few more to give away. It is the perfect size to carry anywhere and to use in witnessing. I don't know why the Master Outline study isn't available anywhere else but it makes this particular little Bible even a greater jewel.

I was fortunate enough to pick up this tiny treasure at a used bookstore for 98 cents. I suppose the bookstore owner thought that its small size meant it had an equally small worth. That could not be less true! Besides including some of the best books ever written (The New Testament books!) this small but mighty book contains Master Outlines of important principles of Christian life. I like Porter Barrington's system because he is not using his own opinion to supplant the Bible's words - he is letting the power of God's Word speak for itself and simply adding insights he has gained through his years of ministry. Mr. Barrington guides the reader along a journey through the New Testament, letting your mind develop in the Biblical principles. One of the features I most appreciated was the "God's Plan of Salvation" outline. I do not have a very good memory and I get easily flustered during personal witnessing moments - so it is invaluable to me to be able to pull my Christian Life New Testament out of my purse and open it immediately to a Biblical Plan of Salvation. This wonderful little book also contains two beautiful certificate pages at the end, one for honoring a person's date of Salvation and the other for honoring a person's date of baptism. This is a great way to keep a permanent record of the most important dates in your life. The very last page contains a chart for you to list friends you wish to pray for and witness to. I cannot praise the Christian Life New Testament enough. It is useful for every situation and every person. And as my 1978 edition says in the 'What the Christian Life New Testament Can Do For You' section: "It is small enough for the lady's handbag or the man's pocket." You can always have the confidence of having the Word of God with you wherever you go with this wonderful little book.

A wonderful step-by-step study outline and guide for both new and mature Christians. A great witnessing tool. Takes one from God's Plan of Salvation to How to Witness Effectively and all points in between.

I've given several away and am looking for a source where I can buy in bulk.

All across the United States Churches are dying, and pastors are discouraged. Barnett's book isn't the 'cure,' but points to an important element of giving pastors and churches new life -- serving and loving others in Jesus' name. It sounds simple, and it is. But it means being willing to do what Jesus did, to dwell among the people and to love them no matter what. I highly recommend this book for pastors and churches who want to start dreaming again.

I was surprised to see this book was printed in the year 2000. The reason for the surprise is threefold: I firmly believe it is destined to become a classic so expected a higher sales number and currently there are only four reviews at amazon.com and lastly out of the four reviews ministry is mentioned often, yet the book is clearly intended for those who directly minister as well as for "the rest of us". To me, the hallmark of Matthew Barnett's work is the SINCERITY throughout, which was very refreshing. In the book, Matthew Barnett recounts how (at least at the time his book was published) it is common for other local churches to actually post signs stating "No Gang Members Allowed"!! Praise God that Our Lord does not place such constraints. "The Church That Never Sleeps" will awaken your mind, will and emotions to the Lord's calling for outreach and not only inreach in our daily lives. I enjoyed the many references to his relationship with his Father, Pastor Tommy Barnett, not because of "who they are" but because their Father-Son bond is a model for any parent at any time. A powerful reminder of how parents can influence their children by not only their action but their words and their time. This is slightly off-topic in a way but when Matthew's vast early and cumulative exposure to his Dad's Ministry is referred to, it caused me to recall a certain very young actor that people scoffed at for stating (on "The Tonight Show")his early exposure to the world of acting had prepared him to move into directing movies...two boys who grew to men, different backgrounds, influenced and influential, one goes on to Minister the Lord's work and the other films. Each has had a continuing impact on many lives as a response to their childhood and inner direction. Very interesting to me and this led to my further understanding we each have the same sort of choices to affect many on a daily basis. Which road will you allow The Lord to direct you? As a result of the book, I am very interested in checking out not only the L.A. Church but as well Rick Stoker of Wilmington, North Carolina, who relinquished a very successful career as a physician for college-level basketball teams in order to establish his own ministry. The book makes it so very clear even someone like me can help (disabled, chronic illness) even with small donations...I read once all those little errors the grocery stores make that customers rarely catch amounts to huge sums of money for the grocery business...hmmmm, I can choose small donations to help the Lord's outreach through these two individiuals. That is how the book inspired me. The book came to my attention courtesy of Joyce Meyer and her daily (televised locally, also via cable, also via radio, also via her website, including "podcast") program "Enjoying Everyday Life". Matthew Barnett was a recent guest. The one word that for me best describes this work is: sincerity. Destined to be a Classic.

This book is what real ministry is all about. If you are just starting out in the ministry, this book is especially helpful. Matthew Barnett brings you from the beginning of his ministry through his amazing journey to a thriving full ministry today. He brings us back to what is real in ministry. You will be forced to examine your life, your ministry in the light of what the gospels say real ministry is all about. This book will challenge you to come up higher and to throw off some of the old ideas about what church is.

Great book. For me, and I think for many others, it wasn't so much that the book had any new revelation or teaching as much as it reminds us of the true simplicity and purity of real ministry. You know, the stuff that we used to do when we were younger, and it worked, before we got sidetracked with OUR aganda, OUR goals, OUR ministry career. Thanks Matthew! Let's keep it simple. Phillipians 2.4 should be the theme verse: "Look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others."
