Contracts by SchaberReview Date: 2004-06-01
1. Express contracts consisting of the standard offer-acceptance
and consideration trilogy
2. Implied in fact contracts distinguished by conduct rather than
by express words
3. Promissory estoppel referred to as detrimental reliance
4. Subsequent promises to perform pre-existing obligations
5. A minority theory of imposing liability based upon a subsequent promise to pay for material benefits previously conferred.
6. Implied in law quasi-contracts which are non-consensual obligations
The theory of an offer arouses an expectation in the mind of a
reasonable person. Such an expectation may create a power of
acceptance in the offeree. An offer must be sufficiently certain
to make any resulting agreement enforceable and damages calculable. The offer must be certain as to the parties, subject matter, price and time of performance. An offer in which the
offeror or offering party promises to do or not to do something in exchange for a promise by the offeree to act is an offer for
a bilateral or two-sided contract. Further details as to
bargained exchanges, the statute of frauds and a whole host
of complicating factors are set forth simply with a generous
sprinkling of stare decisis cases to illustrate the legal
points explained. The text will be helpful for law students, journalists, constitutional scholars and a whole host of
other constituencies in academe.
This text is a good supplement to the standard legal texts on contract law. It is well worth the price charged.

An excellent guide to working with clayReview Date: 2005-04-16
The book originally came out in 1992, and is now in its fourth edition. And, after mentioning some safety issues, it has plenty of instructional material on how to shape clay, and what tools to use. There are sections on hand building: pinching, coil building, and slab building. Then there's plenty about the technique of "throwing" clay on a potter's wheel, with nice sequences of photos. This takes plenty of skill and practice! As the author says, the wheel is very sensuous, rhythmic, and hypnotic. Peterson is always warning us to treat clay properly: if you attack it in one way and then hit it from another direction in the same place, you may find cracks there in firing, induced by the strains you imposed on it. It's simply wrong to overwork clay.
Still, many potters and artists like to produce many objects with the same overall shape. And that means making and using molds made from plaster, and making casting slips, so Peterson shows us quite a bit about these. After this comes a discussion of decoration. This involves artistry and visualization.
There is a good discussion of types of clays, and explanations of what earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain are. We're shown different types of clay bodies, including terra sigillata and raku (a process which requires a clay body that has some dirt mixed in with it to make it porous enough to avoid thermal shock). And there is a wonderful chapter on glazes. Following that, there is plenty about kilns and firing, including using cones, inconel tubes, and pyrometers to measure temperature.
A technical section explains how to do calculations on glazes, and there are charts of coefficients of expansion, data on frits, color charts of clay and glaze combinations, and much more.
There is a historical overview, which includes a discussion of the studio potter movement and the contributions to it from Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada. And we see some of the work of Maria Martinez and Lucy Lewis in Pueblo Indian ceramics. There is also an excellent portfolio of interesting works. I especially like some of the low-fire ones.
This is a very useful resource and I highly recommend it.
Very Comprehensive Survey of Ceramics Techniques & MaterialsReview Date: 2005-06-10
Since other reviews have covered the merits of this book quite well, I'll mention a few issues:
First, there are lots of sample photos of different clay bodies under different firings and different glaze colors and combinations, etc., but they are all *way too small* to really see the characteristics of each sample. Also sometimes there is a series of photos, e.g. throwing a pot, building a kiln, and when they are all arranged on the page, each one is too small (and many are b&w, from previous editions?) Otherwise the book is very well illustrated with a wide variety of work.
The glaze discussion does not cover the properties of glaze bases and coloring oxides much at all, which is something I would expect in a book of this comprehensiveness. It does spent some time on commercial fritted stains and Mayco glazes, which other books don't, and can be useful to some, especially for low-temp work. But if you really want to get into glazes, this is not the book.
For many advanced topics, she has just a mention that leaves me hungry for more. E.g. lusters she briefly mentions using and making, but Rhodes has a much more thorough discussion of making lusters. Paperclay is mentioned briefly but not enough to really tell me how to make it or use it. For many of the topics in the book, more detailed discussions are possible and likely available elsewhere. However she has assembled lots of brief mentions of different and experimental work that you might not encounter in other ceramics survey books, so it is useful for knowing what else I want to look into.

I thought this book was very well written and researched. I would highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn more about precious metal mining in the old west. This book covers many subjects in detailed chapters that include the Gold Rush, Hard Rock Mining, Timbering, Pumping, Explosives, Machine Drills, Transportation, Power & Fuel, Fire Assay, Mills & Smelters, Mill Machinery, and an appendices that includes Mining & Milling Hazards. The many photographs, illustrations and tables were interesting which added to the pleasant reading experience.
No Mining History Library Should Be Without ItReview Date: 2002-01-07
Loaded with pictures, tables, illustrations, chemical formulae and many interesting side notes (factoids),the author covers the gamut in the machinery used to win the metals from the earth.
Excellent review on the evolution of the rock drill, explosives, crushing equipment, pumps, timbering, etc etc.
Also included within the 250 plus pages of good reading, is an excellent 10 page bibliography which is referenced to the chapter footnotes, to assist those who may have a futher interest in any of the subject matter. This is a must have book for the mining historian and for anyone interested in 19th century mining. In short a great book.

Harness the Power of the Internet with E-WallyReview Date: 2001-10-10
by Judy Shasek, Wendy Anderson Schulz
E-Wally and the Quest is the first of three books a series titled ýThe Adventures of E-Wally.ý E-Wally, the 11 year old hero, lives and works in the ýLand of the Internet.ý His job is to speed along the wires and electronics to deliver e-mails around the world. While E-Wally is delivering the bits and bytes, and saving his beloved grandpa, the reader is learning about the enormity, complexity and impact of the Internet. The reader is also enjoying a story about good vs. evil, right vs. wrong, and standing up for oneýs own beliefs.
E-Wally and the Quest is a well-developed mystery with intriguing characters, an interesting plot and a setting that is modern and unique. Our hero, E-Wally is a combination of Harry Potter, Charlie Bucket and any child who loves his family. E-Wally is an adventurous boy who runs away from his home to find out why his beloved grandpa is in trouble. Along the way he has adventures with fuzzball routers, a real boy and the evil Olla-Brac, the ýKeeper of the Bugs.ý
The reader gets instantly involved in the story. The characters become real and their Quest becomes important. The underlying lessons in reading and technology add another piece of value to the book. Iým awaiting more adventures of E-Wally in the second book, E-Wally and the Renegades!

The "Land of the Internet" Awaits!Review Date: 2002-09-10
E-Wally and the Quest is a children's book that should appeal to all ages. Not since an eleven-year old wizard joined our household, has a book enthralled all members of our home. As computer network engineers, my husband and I were excited to find a book that takes the complex and often confusing land of the Internet and makes it understandable to even the least technical reader. Our children, ages 7 and 9, have learned a great deal about what Mom and Dad do at work. This wonderful book opened a communication channel for our family and has been the catalyst for several lengthy conversations. Even a non-tech family should find a great deal for discussion as the book tackles such subjects as Internet ethics, fighting for a cause and helping your friends even when it is not easy to do so. As one friend suggested, "Maybe my kids can use it to explain the whole thing (Internet) to me".
While I would strongly encourage families to read E-Wally together, educators will also find this book an inspiring tool for the classroom.

Belated welcome to Chef Eleanora!!Review Date: 2006-05-15
This is her first publishing venture, and I feel that she has far surpassed whatever goal she set for herself. I've found her recipes to be authentic and fresh, yet you could substitute store-bought ingredients if you didn't have time to make them yourself, such as the tomato sauce. I've gotten through half of the recipes and I haven't had a single disappointment; everything is satisfying and hearty.
I feel that Eleanora's teaching style can be used for those with basic cooking abilities to those with more skilled knowledge of Italian cooking. I had some culinary-challenged friends over to teach them how to make the Gnocchi, and the Ravioli, and they were impressed with themselves by the time they left. This is a wonderful way of encouraging family time, and even to pass the time catching up with friends. I've also found that for those folks who have everything, and you want to get something different, I've tucked this book into a gift basket filled with some of the basic staples of italian cooking and it has been a much-appreciated gift.
My all-time most requested dish is her "Nonna's Homemade Minestrone"; it is absolutely a favorite, especially during the cold winter months; the soup gets sprinkled with some Asiago cheese, and then it was paired with her homemade Italian bread and creamy butter, and a generous glass of my Pa's homemade wine. My own personal favorite is the "Italian Stew"; talk about hearty!!! Or how about the homemade ravioli? Fish? Follow that with a couple of desserts like Italian cream puffs (but chocolate or vanilla??!!) or maybe zeppole or the traditional tiramisu and you'll really have a problem with those pants fitting!! The pignoli cookies are a blast from the past; they taste just like I remember them!!! Then after everyone has eaten, and the kids are napping off the meal, let the adults enjoy a small sip of "Limoncello" to help digest your delicious meal!!! You cannot get any better than that!!!
Mrs. Scarpetta has done very well and has much to be proud of and she definitely has bragging rights. I hope that she will consider her next cookbook soon...........I'll be waiting!

An Original Pure Italian BookReview Date: 2004-06-07
Are we now giving the most stars for the most unusual far-fetched version of Italian food? Sure one can tweak or enhance a recipe making sure that the end results are better, but to distort the beauty of the "mona-lisa" is unacceptable. Italian food will never change, no matter how much these celebrity chefs try. Eleanora showcases the natural pure beauty of the original Italian foods that we all know and love. She makes it so easy for anyone to make these recipes with ease, without looking for real wierd/unheard of ingredients. A natural cook without a doubt who loves food and loves to share her wisdom. I cant get enough of this book, its the best yet.

A wonderful glimpse of Iron men on wooden shipsReview Date: 2001-10-09
I loved this book. Each selection was entertaining and well chosen, both for the glimpses the provide into the lives of the officers and men who served on such ships, and for their historical context (Such as Dr. William Beatty's account of the death of Horatio Nelson).
I'd suggest it to anyone who enjoys Naval History, or historical fiction (Such as Forrester or O'Brian) on the subject.
A window on the age of sailReview Date: 2000-06-06
This book is an anthology of first hand accounts of naval life in the age of sail. The stories are dramatic and gripping, though I wished the they were longer. The editors have helpfully added some diagrams and maps, though I would have prefered even more.
It is very interesting to see the overlap with the O'Brian books. As O'Brian points out in one of his forwards, at least sometimes he did not need to invent the plot, but merely re-arrange and sort out the pacing.

Down to the Sea in ShipsReview Date: 2000-06-24
This anthology of first hand accounts covers events in both the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, including the War of 1812, in which the Royal Navy getting some very nasty surprises, and even nastier defeats, at the hands of the small, but expert United States Navy.
Some of the subjects covered are the Battle of Cape St. Vincent in 1797, the sea fight between HMS Macedonian and the USS United States in 1812, the cruise into the Pacific of the USS Essex, and such esoteric subject as 'the noted pimp of Lisbon' and Bermuda in time of peace.
This book is an enjoyable read, an outstanding primary source, and one of the best books available on this often neglected subject.
22 Great True Stores from the Napoleonic EraReview Date: 2000-08-08
If all you read in this book is "The Audacious Cruise of the Speedy", you will have gotten your money's worth.
If the only stories you read are the two chapters from the Nagle Journel, "For the Good of My Soul, 1795," and "Mad Dickey's Amusement, 1798-1800", you will have gotten your money's worth.
But you get more than this. You get a total of 22 stories picked from many to capture the history and character of the times.
If you like Patrick O'Brien, and C.S. Forester, you will enjoy the history that gave seed to these stories. You will recognize the events of Lucky Jack Aubrey's fiirst cruise in the cruise of the Speedy, and be amazed.

Focusing on "The Fragrant Mind", it is an amazing book! There is so much wonderful information, great recipes for various blends, a fun and enlightening look at the the different invdividual personality types and the different essential oils personality profiles, not to mention wonderful Quick Reference Charts.
This book does so much more than tell about a couple of uses for a few basic essential oils, it shows how essential oils can truly effect our emotional state. It also helps explain why we are drawn more to certain scents, and how our personality plays a big role in this. This book is definitely a must have!
