This book is beautiful beyond belief. The photographs are beautiful and it's interesting to compare and contrast the different views of handpainting yarn and design sensibilities presented here. I also liked the insights provided into running small yarn companies coupled with the sense of craft in different parts of the US. The big pages can inspire dreams about knitting and the book is a great spur to the imagination. Some of the designs are not to my taste but there are many tastes presented here and I'm sure most readers would find plenty of things they like.
I would also recommend this book to people who handpaint their own yarn as I do - seeing the excellent photographs of many different styles of handpainted yarn was a real eye opener to me.
That said, I regret that it's hard to find out where to buy many of the yarns so tantalizingly presented here. I have been knitting for over thirty years and never follow a pattern exactly; I wouldn't recommend this book to neophytes.

Gorgeous!

I am very fussy about my knitting books. Many of them have the same basic sweater patterns over and over (look at the schematics) the change in "look" of a sweater comprising of variations in guage, yarn used, or a different pattern stitch. An experienced knitter can figure most of this out by his/herself. Therefore I look for something new - something different - in a book of knitting patterns. Otherwise I pass on the purchase.

This book has lovely, creative designs and they are readily adaptable to substitution yarns, as most of the yarns featured are MUEY EXPENSIVO! (I don't know about you but I consider spending 3 - 500 dollars on yarn for a sweater I may not finish a bit steep!) I still buy the handpaints, but where a solid is shown, i will substitute a more basic yarn.

In any case, the patterns are beautiful and inventive - showcasing Top designers best work. The yarns are drool material, and the photography is exceptional, displaying these incredible handyed yarns in all their sensual beauty! This book goes far beyond a "coffee table" book, although it has the same size AND you really want to pick it up and look through it whether you knit or not. You will want to photocopy the patterns before you make them.

I love this book.

It's a gorgeous book, hands down. I put it right up there with Knitting Across America for sheer inspiration and beauty. The book is organized by geography, much like Knitting Across America, and Cheryl interviews dyers from every area. Mountain Colors, Valentina Devine, La Lana Wools, Fiesta Yarns, Koigu, Great Adirondack, and more. The only area that wasn't covered well is the West, which may mean that there are not a lot of hand dyers in business here.

Patterns follow each dyers review, and they are varied and beautiful. Top name designers such as Lily Chin, Sally Melville, Rick Mondragon, and Cheryl Oberle offer a wide range of garments and other items; sweaters, vests, afghans, shawls, hats, etc. Some are deceptively simple; Valentina Devine's Garter Blocks afghan is simplicity itself to make, but it's just beautful in the colors she chose.

Of course, the photography is incredible. Alexis Xenakis has outdone himself yet again. Yarns are photographed in natural light, often using the landscape as a backdrop.

The book is printed on high quality glossy paper, so the colors really shine. The body text is in a sans serif font, in a size that is quite comfortable to read. There is plenty of white space for your eye to rest after the excitement of texture and color.

Awesome!!!!!

Sometimes I just want to pick up a knitting book just to drool over the designs, colors, textures rather than attempt something. The patterns appear rather well written and easy to follow-it's just that I am a basic, basic, basic knitter and have not reached this "Zen" level of knitting. This book TOTALLY inspired me to keep going. I WANT to be able to knit like this and use these yarns. I saw one review that said she couldn't find the yarn. Concidentally, the other day I was in AC Moore craft store and picked up a magazine titled Interweave Knits. Almost every one of the yarns were listed in this magazine! I will always reach for this book for inspiration.

Need inspiration? read this book!

As a handspinner, I'm always curious about what other spinners and dyers are doing. Handpaint Country was impossible to put down. The photos are beautiful and I was enchanted by the stories of the women who spin and dye in the book. Their yarns are gorgeous! i thought some of the projects in the book were a little odd, but other than that, it's a great book.

Reading this book is like eating Thanksgiving dinner. You read until you are stuffed with so much information. Then you have to stop and ingest it. You have to pray over what you have learned; soaking in all of the extra insight and knowledge. Then after the feeling of fullness begins to subside, you go back for more...and more...and more! This book is not only a glimpse at the life of David. It also explores other people who were important in making David the man that God intended for him to be. While exploring David's life, you will begin to explore your own life...your own ministry. None of us are worthy or perfect by any means. This book explores David's weaknesses in a way that you can compare your own short comings and know that you can be a person after Gods own heart.

Beth's book is a wonderfully written journey through the life of a man who sought God's own heart. She fluctuates between humorous observations on the actions of the Biblical characters I thought I knew so well, and touching parallels to the life of the ultimate "Son of Man". This book held me captivated from the introduction to the final period. I look forward to more books like this from Beth.

A few years ago the women's Bible study in my church went through the video version of "A Heart Like His." I heard glowing reviews from one lady after another, speaking of how pertinent and powerful the material was. Unfortunately, it was then geared exclusively to women, so I never watched the videos myself.

With the memory of those glowing reviews still fresh in mind, I decided to purchase the book version and see for myself if Beth Moore's teaching lived up to its reputation. I was certainly NOT disappointed. This book is an outstanding treatment of the triumphs and the tragedies of Israel's most famous king.

Moore takes practically every significant incident from David's life and applies the spiritual principles to life today. Through her exposition here, the reader gets to know David much better, and learns why he has been called "a man after God's own heart." The author's treatment is chronological, starting from the events surrounding David's emergence on the Biblical scene as a young boy to the transfer of his throne as an old man to his son Solomon.

I recommend this book very highly to anyone wanting to gain a better understanding of the life of King David. The book is very easy reading, yet is profound in its insights. Men and women, clergy and laity alike will benefit from Moore's painstakingly thorough work.

A Focused Study

Beth Moore chose to delve into the life and times of David, a mere shepherd boy who was chosen to be the leader of Israel. In A HEART LIKE HIS, Moore poses the practical questions as to how a person can be forgiven and restored after sin? How a person can continue to be faithful when nothing seems to be going his way? How can a person find God when feeling lonely? How important is God's influence on our family?

Moore begins the journey into David's life in the book of 1 Samuel. She uses several Biblical references and provides background into the trials and tribulations David faced. With God's assistance, David rose from basic obscurity into a position of amazing power. When he operates outside of God's will, he makes an unwise decision that will prove to unravel his long reign and have dire consequences on his family. In his earlier times, Moore depicts David who continually seeking God's guidance and is quick to offer praise to God. Yet, David was a man with a weakness for beautiful women. Although he was married, David enjoyed the attention his power garnered him from the fairer sex. Moore enhances the reader's understanding of how David's adulterous conduct with Bathsheba and the murder of her husband cast David out of God's will. On this subject, Moore states that David had a "far away heart." It was not until David was "bankrupt in spirit" over the death of his illegitimate son that he repented for his sins. Moore reminds the reader that although God will forgive us of our sins, He will pass judgement on us.

In A HEART LIKE HIS, Moore does a very good job of setting the scene. She takes us back to the beginning even before David had knowledge of the greater things in store for him. The book's lessons are based mainly on 1 Samuel and 2 Samuel. A HEART LIKE HIS would be a great tool for individual or group study. Each chapter is laden with cross-references to other Biblical references. At times, it was confusing because the complete Biblical citation was not used in the text. However, this was not distracting enough to detract from the great presentation of King David's reign.

The Woman's Study Bible leads with the words" Opening the WORD of GOD to WOMEN", I cannot define it better. I have found that I am able to develop a relationship with the LORD. It has helped me to open a once closed heart jaded by our times. We do not always want to discuss with others certain issues as we may feel isolated. All these issues have been addressed and have made it easy for one to dig deep within to stoke the fire of GOD in us. The topical notes are inspirational. I am blessed to have a diverse ethinc background. Still, this Bible spoke into my life, it will into yours.

I am excited each time I open the pages of this Woman's Study Bible. I own over 25 bibles and this is one of the best I have used.

The study group I am in will be looking at the lives of most of the women in Scripture to see how to apply or avoid the things we learn from their lives. This bible has profiles on many of the women, deals with subject matters that help you to apply biblical principles, and shows you the role women played in the life of Jesus. Their commentary on the text is very insightful and gives clarification according to the context of the verses.

It is hard to find fault with this study bible. It comes in softcover, hardcover and leather (at reasonable prices). The print is good, nice margins, NKJV text, cross references, concordance and an index of the charts, notes and profiles. There is also historical information. such as, Women and Archaeology, at the beginning of the bible.

I am familiar with several of the contributors and have heard them speak or have read their works. These ladies are of sound reputation in their doctrine and their dedication to the Word of God.

I thank God for this resource and hope every woman who is serious about studying the Word gets a copy for their library. I highly recommend The Woman's Study Bible.

This bible is a wonderful resource for any woman who wants a little extra information to go along with the Scripture readings. The print is large and easy to read, and the extra notes are clearly separated from the actual Scripture text. The notes are informative and thoughtfully written, and are specifically geared to issues and concerns of today's woman. I would recommend this Bible to any woman actively involved in a bible study class or any woman wishing a more in depth look at the Scriptures.

HUNTING THE KING is a fast-paced story of the search for the remains of Christ. And if not Christ's remains, at least those of his family members. Throughout the complex compilation of characters from academia, religion, the military and the past Iraqi regime, you wonder what will happen to the faithful if Christ's temporal remains should be found. The story is very well written. Clenott keeps the numerous characters and their stories clear and interesting and the dénouement is clever. I highly recommend this book.

Careful! This one takes you by the neck, drags you to the edge, and throws you over.
Featuring a plot with more twists and turns than a Vermont ski trail, Hunting the King is an all-out race to be first to discover the grave of Jesus, who not only rose from the dead after being crucified (the Easter Resurrection) but might actually have thrived for many years afterward, raised a family, and spent his time working to spread the word of God.

...except we don't actually know all this as fact, and as we follow the opposing forces - one seeking to prevent the infidel Christians from claiming the burial site, and Molly Dwyer and her team who are seeking it for precisely that reason, it's not hard to see the reason in the views of both sides. If this is not enough plot for you, Archaeologist Dwyer has her own demons to fight - dreams in which she finds herself alive during those turbulent years, living as the daughter of Jesus. Could it be she's a reincarnation of Hannaniah? She has the red hair, the eye color. Treachery and double dealing combine with shadowy mysticism as others who share the dream begin to find their way to her side. No one can be trusted. No matter which side prevails, the discovery will be huge, world-changing, and everyone knows it.

It's a lot of story to have on just one stage, but Clenott does an amazing job of reining in the half-dozen story lines, always moving things forward, drawing his cast ever closer to the final moments, and at the same time managing to keep the lid on the actual details of the burial site until just the right moment. It's a masterful job from a writer of genuine ability.

After putting Dan Brown's "DaVinci Code" down in mid-read, disgusted with the failure to produce the payoff promised by the opening, I began this read with reservations. I'm happy to say not any more! If you are one who enjoys fast-paced, devil-take-the-hindmost writing, you should be sure to give this one a try.

One of the joys of reading 'first novels' is the pleasure of discovering a mature writer who is able to construct a book with a strong idea, a solid cast of varied and wholly credible characters, and the ability to pull it all together with elegant writing. Peter Clenott seems to have the qualities that define a writer of class - a rich imagination, a commitment to research, a facile way with words, a sense of the arc of a story line that is as smooth throughout the curve, and a style that manages to make a complex story very easy to follow.

Mysteries about the origins of Christianity have been a popular topic for the past decade or so - was Jesus crucified until dead and did he rise from the dead and in resurrection ascend into heaven, or was there more to his important life than tradition and the Church would have us believe - questions that to some casual reader of a book jacket may sound heretical but to others who love historical investigation open new paths of exploring, and even enhancing, our belief systems. Clenott writes with authority and yet with a profound respect for all religions as he traces a mixed group of archeologists, clerics, historians, politicians, Intelligence experts, and military personnel from varied countries in a search for the possible remains of a buried Jesus and his 'earthly family' - all from insights provided by the Book of Hannaniah (the daughter of Jesus and Mary Magdalen) excluded from the Bible. His cast is lead by a fascinating Dr. Molly O'Dwyer who is convinced through her sessions of 'Regression therapy' by a Catholic priest turned professor that she has inhabited the character of Hannaiah and is obsessed with discovering the burial site of Hannaiah and possibly even the grave of Jesus. The book follows the expedition team gathered from various countries to Iraq, a timely current and well-managed proscenium arch for the story. Clenott manages the various aspects of this story by breaking his chapters into fragments that serve to transport the reader to various vantages of the involved and very disparate characters, allowing the story to flow without disruption while at the same time giving the reader a depth of understanding about the forces involved. His knowledge and research is evident on every page as we learn the terrain not only of Afghanistan and Iraq but also of the Vatican and the US and tenets of the world religions. And to keep the novel grounded in credible reality Clenott manages to introduce sidebars of love interest and profound friendships as well as the brutalities of war and conflicts that enhance this story while successfully questioning historical Biblical accuracy.

To offer more of the plot would spoil the adventure for reading Peter Clenott's fascinating tale. HUNTING THE KING is a very fine, very successful work of literature - a book that, once started, is quite impossible to put down. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, May 08

One more book in the "just like Da Vinci Code" genre, but the only difference is, this one is good.

In 2003, as America is invading Iraq, a discovery is made that leads Molly O'Dwyer to believe that Hannaniah, the supposed daughter of Jesus, is there and Molly must find the remains before they are lost forever. Being an observant Catholic, she battles herself over the bigger picture. If she finds and reveals them to the world, what will happen to the Christian faith? With a long list of characters that had me a bit confused at times, Molly and her fellow scientist's race through Iraq and Afghanistan following clues that Hannaniah herself left in her poetry. Climaxing in a battle of good vs evil and who can outwit who, Clenot has you on the edge of your seat until the final pages.

The brutality of the time and place are not lost on the reader, Clenott manages to carry the reader through Abu Ghraib and into the beauty of the country that protects their traditions and will fight to withhold them.

What I respected Clenott for was his implying but not really coming out and saying who the mother of the child was. Mary Magdalene's name had been mentioned in the book as a follower, but it was never said outright that she was the mother of Hannaniah. I'm glad he didn't get caught up in the current hype and let the reader reach their own conclusion. The one thing that did caused me to mark the book down one star was the fact that the lead character was a diabetic, but yet was able to go long days without eating and only needing one insulin shot. I don't know why Clenott included this tidbit about his character since it really wasn't necessary and for me, drew me away from the story. Having lived with my father, a diabetic for years, this didn't make sense to me and kept drawing me away from the story.

Apparently, this is the first in a planned series and I look forward to see more from this writer and Molly O'Dwyer.

Da Vinci Who?

Review Date: 2008-04-29
Peter Clenott has written a Da Vinci Code for the discerning reader. There's plenty of suspense, action, and more than a few plot twists, but this tale of religious intrigue is a lot less dense and convoluted. To put it another way, I felt Dan Brown stuffed Da Vinci with a little too much padding--Clenott gives you the essential good stuff without any fluff.

The heroine of the piece is Molly O'Dwyer, an American archaeologist who discovers a long-lost burial mound in ancient Babylon on the eve of the American invasion of Iraq. What's particularly refreshing about her is that Molly is a fully-developed character with completely believable personal problems and beliefs that affect her reactions to the situation in which she finds herself. The story hinges on her efforts to discover whose remains are in the tomb and how it relates to the mysterious Gospel of Hannaniah, which is the story of the alleged daughter of Jesus. Since her discovery can undercut the foundations of the church and leave billions of believers with no basis for their faith, Molly's got her work cut out for her.

No tale of international religious intrigue would be complete without a cast of spies, slightly mad scientists, and secretly evil church hierarchy and Clenott doesn't disappoint in that department. To it he adds a setting that couldn't be more contemporary--the Middle East about to plunge into war--and an intriguing plot that holds you through the final riveting revelations.

Hunting The King is an intellectual thriller with overtones of a historical novel and enough action and intrigue to please even the most discerning fan of the genre.

I knew the story about Bucephalus before the movie "Alexander" came and sold out the box office. "Bucephalus, meaning strong and stubborn," he had said while mounting the stallion. A true story of how the brave 12 year old boy ruled the horse and charged him into battle. Now, this fiction story is a real page turner. If you like horses, black stallions, and adventure, then "I am the Great Horse" is the book for you!

Ms. King is a gifted story teller. She entertained me, and that's what good writing is all about. The story, with all its characters and sub-plots, is well-written. It moves and keeps the reader turning pages. The characters are well-developed and one begins to "know" them as the story develops. Readers who enjoy a good story will not be disappointed by this book.

This was a wonderful story set in the north Georgia hills. If you liked such stories as Cold Sassy Tree, Gone With the Wind or Fried Green Tomatoes you will really enjoy It Happened on Kendall Mountain. This is one of those stories that becomes a part of you as the pages fly by. Sheer entertainment!!

In this day and age of questionable influences on a young man, the father needs to be equipped to nurture his son into manhood.

This is a must read for any father. Steve does an excellent job of covering the difficult subjects that fathers need to discuss with their sons. He uses biblical references throughout to back his points up. He also uses examples from his own life to drive the points home. Some of the material is a challenge, but one that as fathers we need to step up and do.

If you are a father with a son, this book is a must. Want your son to be a man, you have to show him how to be a man and you have to tell him when he is a man. This book will help.

It is hard to argue with 4000 years of history. This is a must read for any man with a son. King Me helps you to understand how important it is to validate your son and avoid making the same mistakes so many fathers do.

My husband, who does little to nothing on the computer, only dictated this line to me: "I wish i had this book 10 years ago!" He says it is a must have for every dad and requested i find and buy him everything Steve Farrar has ever wrtiten. I did! Specifically, the author breaks down the various personality types and talks about the necessity for each in life and how a dad can appreciate, mentor, direct and affirm his son(s) for the Glory of God and honorable masculinity in general.King Me: What Every Son Wants and Needs from His FatherKing Me: What Every Son Wants and Needs from His Father

Star of the Guardians Keeps Getting Better!

Sorry, I can't tell you why, but I bawled like a baby when I read this book. That never happened to me before. Oh, yes, I cry all the time in movie theaters, it embarrasses the heck out of my wife. But a book? C'mon.

King's Sacrifice brings the Star of the Guardians series to a cataclysmic conclusion. You have a good idea what's going to happen, you think, and then all of a sudden you get hit broadside. You better be sitting down when this one wraps up. Sagan, Maigrey, Dion, Tusk, all the wonderful friends you've enjoyed for during the story, they end up in the most surprising circumstances. And yes, it will make you sob your heart out.

It will move even the most iron-hearted reader!!!!

This book, which was intended to be the conclusion of the Star of the Guardians series, is just about as different from the usual mass-marketable science fiction as you can get. Not only will you be alternatively mesmerized, horrified and deliriously excited by the graphic action, but your heart will truly go out to the main characters. You will marvel at their choices, rejoice at the outcomes or mourne their fates... do not think you will escape the conclusion dry-eyed.

And at the end, like the legions of Margaret Weis' fans, you will also want to raise a bloodsword to the courage of Lady Maigrey, Lord Sagan and Dion Starfire!!

King' Sacrafice will move you!

King's Sacrafice takes us back to the galaxy with Dion, Sagan and Maigrey. This novel picks up right where the prequel lets off......it is high paced, and leaves you on the edge of your seat. Scenes with Abdiel are very intense, and entertaining. I loved this novel due to the influx of new intriguing characters. See who will finally control the galaxy! Will it be Dion? Or Sagan? Or Maigrey? Or a combination of all three?

One of the best books I have read

I am not a usual fantasy or sci-fi reader, but a friend convinced me to read The Star of the Guardians series. In fact, the only fantasy I had read before this were The Lord of the Rings. I became addicted to The Star of the Guardians as soon as I picked them up! King's Sacrifice stuck out in my mind as the best one in the series though (I cried more than I did in Gone With the Wind and The Man in the Iron Mask(the book) combined). The best part about this book was the inexorable destinies of Lady Maigrey and Lord Sagan, and their romantic interactions with one another. Now don't get me wrong! It isn't all mush, it is very quick-paced! The mush just got to me the most. The only thing about this book is that the writing is good, but not excellent like Ray Bradbury or Margaret Atwood...in other words, it's not what you might call a contemporary classic. From a well read person, I think you would like it.

A potentially dreary three-and-a-half hour train ride whizzed by thanks to The King's Sister -- an excellent retelling of one of my all-time favorite stories -- King Arthur and the Roundtable. Seeing the story thru the eyes of King Arthur's sister afforded a different and excellent perspective to view the events unfold. The book moves so smoothly -- thanks to graceful writing and pacing. Bravo. I look forward to the sequel.

"Kate Schafer's work is delightful, brimming with exuberance. Her Anna Pendragon is a charming new addition to Arthurian lore and now, having read The King's Sister, I won't be able to think about Camelot with her."
