I read this book with sadness knowing that within it's covers was the very last story I will ever read from this wonderful author. Stella you did a fine job finishing the book and I am sure David would be proud. I loved the series, I loved the book. I shall miss Mr Gemmell, I have read every one of his books, some I have read multiple times, and he is one of the greatest storytellers in my humble opinion.

This is a gripping account of the siege of Troy. It has most of the major characters but does not follow Homer's epics. There are also historical inaccuracies (which do not detract). It was pleasing to see some of the more recent excavation finds (eg a lower city) at the Troy excavation site in the story as well as an appearance by the Hittites (a bronze age superpower). The story is so thrilling and realistic that it makes the reader actually "live it".

A parallel plane of existence; one amongst maybe thousands other planes:
the story of Troy unfolds. some characters end up following the same historical line we know about in Homer's Iliad. other characters, surprise us with the drastically different choices they make and the paths they choose.
by the choices those people make, the story of Troy and its progress meanders through a myriad of new possibilities and probabilities, with surprises at the ready.
in the midst of it all, our beloved storyteller decides to throw in another chain of events happening simultaneously with the Trojan saga: the Exodus.
slowly, the dormant destinies of some characters begin to glow faintly, then as the story progresses, the glow becomes a blazing sun. Helikaon and Gershom: Aeneas and Moses. the first would go on to be the ancestor of the Roman people (some british kings would also trace their ancestry to him), and the second would lead the jewish people out of egypt and into Canaan. both succeed many times in obliterating the actual story and gaining the reader's unwavering attention (and hours of sleep) with their actions. such is their power.
In the Iliad, we are pawns upon the chessboard of the gods, subjects to not so godly whims and decisions.
In Gemmell's story, the gods are just hollow names, entities who are endlessly evoked, revered, and called for, but ever silent. the divine is stripped away and the men and women in the story take their fate in both hands, in a grim stand against the inexorable unknown.
guided by faith, aspirations, ambition, or sheer will, a handful of humans would eventually achieve godlike states, their names and memories outliving the gods they might have worshipped. others would dive down into the labirynth of their fears and weaknesses and be forgotten.
here, Hektor, Achilles, Andromaque, Odysseus and Aeneas are all gods. how each hero ends up will surprise and uplift you. there's a majesty and power in such humans that's quasi extinct today. such power can be found again, if we choose to really know and acknowledge ourselves for what we are and what we can and cannot achieve. but that requires a lot of will, and indeed 'the age of heroes has passed'.
Dipping in and out of magic and reality, Gemmell is IMO, The ultimate weaver of fantasy storytelling. his stories and retellings contain all the ingredients in perfectly balanced doses, and introduced at the perfectly right time. can you still be wondering about the result?
unchangeably, every tale will linger in the mind and heart. the wondrous characters, flawed as they are, will always be a delicate fragrance floating in the corridors of the soul.

The last book of the Troy series. The Gemmells vividly and successfully recreate the loyalties and betrayals, the loves and hates, the endurance, the ambition, the cruelty and the courage of men and women of the Troy myth. A very interesting new version of the Trojan wars, an excellent read!

This was actually the first Daniel Steele book I ever read. It was wonderful the story so well developed and the characters so full of life. In fact I have now read this book at least 3 times maybe even 4, truly a classic. Everyone should have this on their shelf to read when you get tired of just seeing words on a page that take you nowhere.

Audry is SUCH a great character! Her love of adventure and for her man, but her loyalty to her family is what really pulled the story together. Very enjoyable book!

I have read many of Danielle Steel's books. This has to be one of her best. It is about a young woman named Audrey who has been caretaker to her grandfather and younger sister. Then, she has this need to do some traveling, and see the world. She does so, first going to New York City (she lived in San Francisco). She meets two people named James and Violet, and she becomes a travel companion for the two. In England, she meets Charles, whom becomes her one true love, and they travel the world together, and no matter what threatens to break them up, they never give up on each other.

This is not as formulaic as many of Danielle Steel novels, but it is still wonderful and one of her best.

I have been reading Danielle Steel for over 15 years and own all her books and this is one of my favourites - one I can read over and over again and still enjoy the story.
I was transported back to the 1930's and admired the bravery of Audrey travelling to China when it was probably a dangerous (and not "proper") for a young single woman to do so. This one made me laugh, cry and wish that all would go well for Audrey.
If you are a Danielle Steel fan you will love this one. Her earlier novels (like this one) are so much better than her later books. If you are new to Danielle Steel - this one is highly recommended. Enjoy!

The only draw back is that it doesn't have the Old Testement. However, if it did the book might be to large to cary around. Great reference that allows you to compare 8 different translations side by side.

Bulky but reader-friendly for being 8 texts in 1.

This is an extraordinary New Testament (because it is eight New Testament translations). While it is probably peerless as a convenient reference resource, and for personal or group study, it is not a good New Testament for casual reading. Because it is eight parallel New Testaments, it is necessarily bulky and can be mildly confusing since the reader must find his/her place every time a page is turned, as will happen every ten verses or so if one is simply reading any given version. This does not amount to a deficiency in this NT, or even to a complaint on my part; it is difficult to image how eight New Testament translations could be presented in parallel in a more reader-friendly format. It is a unique volume; highly recommended for the serious student of the New Testament.

THE Parallel New Testament

Any translation from one language to another must compromise due to the nuances of communication in one language or culture vs another. This is especially true when dealing with an ancient language such as NT Greek. For one that does not know Greek, the best way to find the true meaning of the original writer is to compare translations and sift out the real kernels. There are many parallel bibles on the market today, but this is the best for the New Testament that I have found. With the 8 most respected translations on the same page, comparisons are very easy. The layout of the translations on the pages is also very well thought out. With the NCV and CEV side by side, the NIV over the NKJV, the KJV next to the NASB, and the NLT over the Message, the most literal are ggouped in one area with the paraphrases at the other end and the more balanced versions in the center. One thing that I had trouble finding out before I ordered was the exact layout, so here it is: Top row KJV, NASB, NIV, NLT and bottom row NCV, CEV, NKJV, MSG.

Exceedingly enlightening- 8 popular-evangelical versions...

Who *really* needs 8 versions of the New Testament? I certainly didn't! But I *did* want 5 of the popular versions, and this was a very easy and effective way to get them. Here's a listing of all 8, from my very favorite to least...

1. NIV- New International Version '84: Accurate & readable- thank God for the NIV! I might not be a Christian today if it weren't for this version. It was the first time for me that the Bible truly came alive. It's *still* my favorite version!
*Matthew 5:13- You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.
2. NLT- New Living Translation '96: *VERY* readable- & still pretty accurate. It's not word-for-word, but I like it! This and the NIV together make for very profitable reading. Add the NASB or NKJV to the mix for *real* rock-solid study.
*Matthew 5:13- You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it useful again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.
3. NKJV- New King James Version '82: Great blend between accuracy, tradition & readability! A word-for-word translation, it retains the popular feel of the KJV. I like it! Many evangelicals insist that the NASB is more accurate, but I'll take the NKJV over NASB any day of the week. It's not that I'm a *fanatic* or anything- it's purely personal preference.
*Matthew 5:13- You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.
4. NASB- New American Standard Bible '95: Extremely accurate. Extremely word-for-word. Extremely evangelical!
*Matthew 5:13- You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.
5. KJV- King James Version: 1611 Authorized Version. Amazing impact on history. Still valuable today.
*Matthew 5:13- Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

6. CEV- Contemporary English Version '95: *Very* pleasant surprise. This might actually grow on me. Maybe!
*Matthew 5:13- You are like salt for everyone on earth. But if salt no longer tastes like salt, how can it make food salty? All it is good for is to be thrown out and walked on.
7. NCV- New Century Version '91: Kinda plain vanilla. Not necessarily a bad version, but really- how *many* do we need?
*Matthew 5:13- You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its salty taste, it cannot be made salty again. It is good for nothing, except to be thrown out and walked on.
8. TM- The Message '95: Goodness gracious alive! What book am I reading? Actually, it's really pretty interesting. :)
*Matthew 5:13- Let me tell you why you are here. You're here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavors of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness? You've lost your usefulness and will end up in the garbage.

I wasn't sure which version of the New Testament to buy, so I bought all the comtemporary versions in one book and I am extreemly happy! I enjoy reading the different translations and comparing. I also feel it gives me a more complete understanding reading through the nuances of all 8. The book is neatly designed and features all 8 on one open page (2 pages), 4 on top, 4 on bottom. I only hope to find a parallel Old Testament Bible.

A friend introduced me to this collection this summer. It's a relatively easy read for anyone with a college education in Spanish. Allende uses modern stylistic devices and vocabulary.

The frame is a Scheherazade set up... a series of stories about love relationships.

Some stories are a bit schematic and unsatisfying but when she hits paydirt, it's killer. I especially liked the stories 'Si me tocaras el corazon' and 'Walimai.' These felt almost like deep folk/ fairytales.

If you enjoyed A.S. Byatt's "The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye," you'll like this one too.

She Writes With Magic Ink

What a collection of characters! An illiterate woman who sells words. A man obsessed with a little girl. A woman whose marriage was based on letters written by the wrong man. A woman who spends her life waiting for revenge. A rich man who keeps a girl prisoner. Rascals trying to break into society. A lonely dictator. Invisible Indians. Every character is flawed in some terrible way, and yet, somehow appealing. Somehow you become attached to each of the characters and you want to hear their stories. There is something absolutely magical about these stories by Isabel Allende, stories you can't put down.

What is her secret? I don't know. I think she writes with magic ink. But, there is something else, too. Her characters never give up. No matter how bad, how flawed, how actually depraved they may be, they keep struggling toward the light. And so, each of us, with our own struggle to escape from darkness, can relate to these people and their stories.

These are some of the finest stories I have ever read. I recommend the collection most highly. Reviewed by Louis N. Gruber.

This book is designed to encourage you to push forward to your devine destiny and do not settle for less along the way.
On page 9 she writes, "We have not even scratched the surface of where God's going to take those of us who are willing to go somewhere." She uses David to illustrate the importance of filling one's mouth with praise and worship instead of negatives.
On overcoming circumstances and emotions, she adds, "I'm not moved by what I see, and I don't operate on what I feel" (p. 12). She spends several pages talking about divine appointments. God's timing is also included in the explanation given. She notes, "God has a preset time for you to arrive at this place" (p. 36).
The season of preparation is describe. Again, she uses David to illustrate that he experienced certain victories before he encountered and overcame Goliath.
On promotion she writes, "Stop trying to promote yourself. Just devote your whole heart to God" (p. 73).
Promotion doesn't come from the east, west, north, or south. It comes from God.

Prophetess Bynum imparted so many truths through this book. In it, she helps you to understand first and foremost that you have a destiny in God. She exposes circumstances in which the enemy would desire for you to give up and "get off of the train". She uses biblical examples of people who did not get off the train, although they had difficulties throughout the journey and how God eventually blesses them for their faithfulness. The added punch is that everything that you experience is preparation for where God is taking you. This book is dynamic. I read it and will read it again. It is powerful!!

Just when you think you've got God all figured out, he'll throw a monkey wrench in the plans and knock your whole world off balance. This book came at a time when I felt as if I had lost everything including my mind, health, and even my life. Once again Prophetess Bynum has managed to keep everything straight and to the point. She displays that everyone slips and falls but the only mistake that's made is not trying to get back up and get on the path to reach your goals. By simply stating "Don't Get Off The Train En Route To Your Destiny!" The title say's it all God called us to Conquer, not quit. Christians should display, God's love not only to one another, but also to a hurting world and ourselves. By not giving up and living defeated lives we exemplify that God is more than enough. Period. I recommend that you read this book and re-discover who God intended you to be, while getting back on the path to your destiny.

Excellent sequel to Piper's best book
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-27
It is quite rare for anyone to write a successful sequel to someone else's work. But Carr and Green have written a brilliant continuation to H Beam Piper's book "Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen."

H Beam Piper's book was one of his "Paratime" books. Back when he was writing, the idea of an empire built on travel between alternative worlds was a comparatively unusual one: until recently only Piper and Keith Laumer (Worlds of the Imperium et. seq.) had done anything like this. Recently the genre has expanded enormously with Barnes's "Closers" series, Harry Turtledove (Crosstime Traffic) and David Weber (Gates of Hell) amongst those getting in on the act. If you've read and enjoyed any of those, H Beam Piper's Paratime books were the original.

In Piper's book "Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen," Calvin Morrison, a state trooper from our world or one like it, is accidentally transported to another timeline where Gunpowder is controlled by a corrupt church of the "Gunpowder God", Stryphon. He breaks the church monopoly and helps a kingdom which the church was about to crush to survive.

Green and Carr's sequel is about the major war which follows when "Stryphon's House" comes back for revenge.

I strongly recommend this book, but agree that to get the most out of it, read "Lord Kalvan of otherwhen" first.

Great!

H. Beam Piper (1904-64) was one of the premier science-fiction authors of the 1960s, and should rightly be considered one of the all-time greats in that field. Among the wonderful books that Mr. Piper published during his all-too-short career was Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen. In that book, a Pennsylvania State Trooper name Calvin Morrison is accidentally lifted out of his own space-time continuum, and deposited on a parallel Earth, where some of the Aryans went east, across the Pacific and into North America. Dropped into the midst of a war of conquest, directed by a religion that holds a monopoly on gunpowder, Calvin must use his knowledge of military history to save himself and his new friends.

In this 1985 sequel, Piper fans John F. Carr and Roland Green take us back to the world of Lord Kalvan. Having saved his new nation of Hos-Hastigos from destruction only last year, Calvin Morrison (now Lord Kalvan) now finds a new campaigning season upon him. But, the House of Styphon is not about to see this new force put an end to their gunpowder wealth and authority. And now, Kalvan must prepare to meet an even greater threat, and once more use his knowledge of military history to save a seemingly impossible situation.

Now, I am a massive H. Beam Piper fan, so I went into this book with a little trepidation. I mean, can anyone write a book in Piper's universe with anything like the right feel to it? Well, in fact this is an excellent book - well written and a worthy sequel to the original. All of the characters are here, but they have grown and changed, just like you would expect real people to do. The action is almost non-stop with some excellent battle scenes and tons of action and adventure.

So, if you are a fan of H. Beam Piper, or just his Lord Kalvan story, then you should get this book. It's great.

Also, if you are a fan of alternate-reality science fiction, then this book is something you should consider - but definitely read Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen first.

An outstanding follow up to "Lord Kalvan Of Otherwhen"

H. Bean Piper wrote Lord Kalvan Of Otherwhen and then passed on before he could finish the story. In "Great King's War" John Carr and Roland Green have continued the story and in the process expanded the Piper Universe. This is an outstanding book, well worth any military science fiction/alternate history fan's attention. The paperback from Ace is getting hard to find in good or better condition, but a hardback edition can be purchased from Mr. Carr at Hostigos.com. It is well worth your time and money. Mr. Carr has also published two additional volumes in the Kalvan saga; Kalvan Kingmaker and Seige Of Tarr-Hostigos. If you enjoyed Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen, I think you will enjoy the follow on books.

In the top 5 of military sci fic/fantasy books I've ever read! I stumbled across this book years ago and could not believe it was so faithful to the orginal story by H Beam Piper (Lord Kalvin of Otherwhen) Its a fascinating period of Terran history grafted onto a realistic alternate world and done with style and swerve! I have written both Mr Carr & Green about the followup but it seems stalled. Both of them did their research on this one however and it shows. No miracles from the "real" world to help, tons of political intrigue, realistic characters etc etc. For anyone who likes good deep stories and hard realistic fighting will enjoy this read. You can actually smell the gunpowder and hear the thunder crash of steel on steel!

(Aug 2006 update) This book has been expanded with the addition of some 100 or more pages. The expanded version is really worth the purchase price(from Pequod Press) It explains more of the political situations Kalvin is facing and the internal wrangling of the opposing Styphon's House and its allies. Even the battle scenes get some additional work and unlike some of Carr's work this time he does a good job of illustrating the complexities of the fighting. We also see the character and background of mercenary captain Philidestro get more mention. There is alot more insight into the Paratime home culture and it's politcal ramifactions in Kalvin's timeline. Though either version is a must read, this new edition is the better money spent! Mr. Carr has done some excellent work here!

In this final installment of the blockbuster series, time is running out for the shattered kingdoms as a dark lord and evil kings seek to reign. War amongst the kingdoms of men has become a war across all lands -- war has even found the elves and the in the reaches the elves of the west battle the elves of the east. Even the santuary of the elves capital grows more vulnerable by the minute as King Mark's army sweeps across the land. In the kingdoms, it is up to a select few to save what they can and escape. In the reaches, Prince Valam and the Elven Brotherhood make their stand. This one delivers stunning surprises at every turn as Robert Stanek explores the far corners of his sprawling world. Full of adventure and heart-pounding action, this last installment is the most thrilling adventure yet. Would recommend for all ages...even parents!

The best book in the WORLD!

If you are ever bored, pick up this series, and start reading. Usually when I read books, I read in short segments. But when I picked up the first one, it was different. When I started, I couldn't stop until the end of the fourth one! It is action packed, and has so many adventures. Plus, it is suspenseful! I highly recomend this to EVERYONE!

All 4 dragon books are filled with mystery, suspense, adventure and action, but this is by far my favorite. I've read the Kingdoms and Dragons books about 10 times each (I'm not exagerating). These books are better than Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings combined. I liked this more than Eragon and Eldest. I love all the battles and action but nothing prepared me for this one, HOLY CRP!!!! I was glued to the book the first time I read it and totally blown away!!! This book is amazing and everyone who I've talked to says its great too! Read it you won't be disappointed.

The end of a magnificent journey, and an amazing conclusion!

In the Service of Dragons #4 is Stanek's crowning achievement and a grand conclusion to a magnificent journey begun with The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches. Eight books later, I was astounded at how well he pulled the varied threads together and wrapped up this epic story of magic, wizards, elves, and dragons.

The characters in this series are exceedingly well portrayed. They have hopes and dreams, they have fears and wants and hungers. Each of the books features alternating storylines, allowing the the reader to see the world of the author's imaging through many different points of view. The changes points of view brings the reader into the utter chaos of this world torn by war on multiple fronts. In the Kingdoms of men, the alliances of old have shattered and Great Kingdom has fallen. In the Reaches of the elves, the elves of the West and East are for the first time at war with each other. And the reader has a front row seat for all the action across many lands.

This book does a wonderful job of bringing everything together from the previous books, all the way back to The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches #1, and answering all the reader's questions. The rousing conclusion and rip-roaring pace provide that this is one of the greatest of the great fantasy series. I love that the story is as much about the changing world as it is about the characters in the world.

Highly, highly recommended.

I love In the Service of DRAGONS!

This book was amazing. I started reading this series because the kid across the street was already reading it. So then I picked up the first one and kept going and going It's like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Star Wars all rolled into one. It's really entertaining and I couldn't stop reading. I read all 4 in 2 weeks. I'd recommend this for anyone who likes fiction.

Right now, this book is out of print and selling used for over $300 dollars based on the current prices listed in Amazon. That's bloody outrageous.

If you want these recipes, don't bother buying this. Kathleen King lost the rights to the "Kathleen's Bake Shop" trademark, but she has a new cookbook available from her new business venture: Tate's Bake Shop. Buy the Tate's Bake Shop Cookbook instead of the older overpriced book listed here.

Good recipes, but a bit skimpy on variety and content.

The recipes contained in Kathleen's Bake Shop Cookbook are good, but standard for what they are, meaning generally to be found in larger cookbooks such as Betty Crocker's or Better Homes & Gardens. And the main complaint I have beyond lack of uniqueness and variety is that the book itself is too small. There are only 132 pages total in this little volume and that includes the index and lots of non-recipe pages. The cover price seems a bit high for only a few dozen recipes. It might be a good starter baking volume for beginning cooks, however.

This is my favorite cookbook (& my roomates too)

I have been going to Kathleen's bakeshop in Southampton for years and remember buying her cookies and pies at farm stands throughout the Hamptons.

I have often used my mother's copy until she bought me a copy for Christmas one year in fear that I would steal it.

The muffins are to die for especially the pineapple-orange and the Chocolate Mousse Cake is heaven. I have a quick trick for the whipped cream topping too. Use organic heavy cream because it makes a stiffer whipped cream and last longer too. I have to admit that I am traditionalist and make the chocolate chip cookies. I love them because they are crisp and buttery.

This cookbook is not for dieters because you will eat more than one. My roomate can vouch for that too.

KATHLEEN'S RECIPES ARE FANTASTIC-EVERYTHING I MAKE FROM HER COOKBOOK IS WONDERFUL. ESPECIALLY GOOD IS THE DARK CHOCOLATE DEVIL'S FOOD CAKE RECIPE WITH THE CHOCOLATE FROSTING. A CO-WORKER INTRODUCED ME TO KATHLEEN'S BAKE SHOP COOKBOOK - WHICH I PHOTOCOPIED PAGE BY PAGE. AFTER TRYING MANY OF KATHLEEN'S RECIPES, I DECIDED THAT I NEEDED A PROPER, BOUND BOOK (THE PHOTOCOPIED PAGES WERE STARTING TO TEAR AND FADE). I BOUGHT THREE BOOKS, ONE FOR ME, MY DAUGHTER AND MY FRIEND. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED WITH ANY OF KATHLEEN'S RECIPES. SHE HAS SIMPLIFIED MANY RECIPES AND IMPROVED ON OTHERS. ALSO ESPECIALLY GOOD, AND EASY TO MAKE, IS HER IRISH SODA BREAD. THIS BOOK WILL EASILY BECOME ONE OF YOUR FAVORITES; IT DEFINITELY IS ONE OF MINE.

A very pleasant surprise

I was really surprised by this book. It is simply wonderful. She has a nice variety of recipes in here, cakes, pies, tarts, cookies, and brownies that are to die for. The book isn't well known, and it should be. The recipes are written in an easy to follow manner, and will have you baking up delicious treats for the special people in your life in no time. I also liked her anecdotes, on what worked, and how she came across some of her recipes. Looking for a book to spruce up your baking, go no further!

I can feel the warmth of that rising sun everytime I look at the scene on this cover [we use it as our screensaver]. I'm sure I've been to this place. Just as this cover scene will rekindle memories for Baja travelers, this story is so vivid you may later try to recall if these were people you've actually met, places you've been yourself, and maybe even that chubasco you went through back in 19[??]!

On a whim I suggested this book to my reading group--as I would be hosting the meeting to discuss it and wanted an excuse to serve salsa and chips. It was a delight to read.

Looking forward to reading if it ever gets here

I came upon this book by accident and have recommended it highly. It has all the flavor of John Steinbeck, a powerful set of characters and a fine story line with humor and pathos. I hope Mr. Kira writes some more fiction for us to appreciate.

One of the Best!
