The Way We Were: 1963 the Year Kennedy Was Shot
Published in Hardcover by Not Avail (1988-10)
Author: Robert MacNeil

Used price: $24.95

A great starting point for learning about 1963
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-16
This book uses each month (except December) of 1963 as a chapter in MacNeil's review of the year. Though there are some short quotes throughout the book, the events and mindsets of 1963 are mostly revealed by photographs and their accompanying captions, some of which are quotes by those in, or in some way involved with, the events shown in the photos. For example, a Peace Corps volunteer, an Army Private, a Presidential aide, and others who lived the experience.

The introduction should be read aloud in every US high school history course. It isn't a dry review of dates and the names of Presidents and Kings, it conveys a feeling, it helps explain why now is different from then. Just covering the events and ideas in the introduction would make an entire--very interesting--class in itself.

As I bought this book, I could not quite understand why the teacher required the book for the class, other than she herself had written it. As time went on and she began to lecture I truly began to understand why. As she began to list all of the familiar MALE speakers, I then came to question, well what about women? And in the moment of question I understood why we need this book. Not only because this was a speech class, but because all WOMEN speakers had been DISMISSED. As a female it made me angry and dissapointed not only at those who dismissed them, but at myself for not asking earlier where are the Women. This book gives GREAT representation to all the BRILLANT women speakers past and present. It shows the true POWER, INTELLEGANCE, FAITH, STRENGTH, COURAGE and LOVE that these women had for themselves and for what they were fighting for. It is also a great example for those women who will dedicate theirt lives to the ART OF SPEAKING. These women have set the path for all women who are willing to get up and be herd. With that I myself have chosen to be among those women. I don't know how or when, but I WILL BE HERD...

Okay, the title does invite parody (What Good is Journalism? Answer; Not much.) But in fact, the book clearly demonstrates why our democracy can't get along without journalism and provides considerable evidence to support that contention. The writers also invite citizens into the conversation, suggesting ways that news organizations and consumers can work together to foster the journalism our society needs to function. I'd also add that it's a good read from talented and accomplished writers. And your friends who are constantly complaining about the "mainstream media"? Give it to them for Christmas.

This book gives you the true picture of the foundational beliefs on which our country began. It gives you a great admiration for three of our presidents who struggled in Prayer and Faith and prevailed in the task which God had appointed for them to do despite the frailties of human nature.
Truly this book should be read by every child across the USA, for a greater appreciation of the..Heritage of the History of our land and the Faith on which it stands.

Without a doubt one of the great Cookbooks. Many great stories as well as recipes. Recipes range from very simple to very complex, all with a flair. many of the simple recipes are also quick, and different from standard fair , such that it is easy to quickly do something exceptionally good, different and appear elegent for guests.I also ate in his restaurant many times in San Francisco (L'Trianon) years ago. he and his story truly add a page to our culinary history, although imported by Jackie Kennedy from France.

The After Effects of Childhood Sexual Abuse
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-10
Sheldon Kennedy was a hocky player that seemed destined for greatness. He played for Canada's gold-medal-winning at the 1988 World Junior Hockey Championship. Then when he reached the major leagues he fell apart. It never seemed that his skill or talent was too low, but the drinking, drugs and other off the court antics seemed to create an atmosphere doomed for failure. He drifted through three teams in a nine year career, never reaching the heights that seemed within his grasp.

Upon his retirement, he announced that during his early years of being coached by Graham James he had been sexually molested by James several hundred times.

Most of this book is on the after effects in Kennedy's life as a result of the abuse. It is a story of using drugs and alcohol in an attempt to heal what never should have been in the first place. It was a fierce struggle that is continuing to this day.
