Mr. Tofel provides an enjoyable and sympathetic account of how President-elect Kennedy managed the production of this rhetorical
bombshell.
Like most presidential speeches, Kennedy's inaugural was a group effort, drawing upon the words and ideas of many gifted people. Tofel does an excellent job of pulling the speech apart, and showing the influence on particular passages of Kennedy's contributors and advisors, and of historical works such as Shakespeare and the Bible.
Lawyers and other communicators will be inspired by Kennedy's ability to fuse all these sources into one of the most invigorating of all Presidential inaugurals.

This book provides a strong overview of the folk culture of a range of communities in South Florida. The chapters on occupational
folklife and tourism are especially strong. The writers provide a very readable and informative study of the types of traditional
activities associated with the many different ethnic and occupational groups in the region. There is excellent background
history on the Seminoles, Miccosukees, and Cuban communities as well as fine descriptions of the folk arts, musical traditions,
and festivals associated with each of the various cultures. The bibliography is excellent, and it is a useful starting point
for further developing the insights of the writers. This volume is a great contribution to the Folklife of the South series,
and it will serve the historical record well.

Soviet Emigre Artists

The public became aware of new ferment in the Soviet art world in 1962, when Nikita Khrushchev pungently expressed his distate
for some modernist works of painting and sculpture exhibited at the Moscow Manege, and again in 1974, when police bulldozed
an "unofficial" open air art exhibition in Moscow and roughed up the spectators.
Not so well known is the fact that quite a few of the Soviet artists whose nonconformity to the canons of socialist reform once brought them world attention now live and work in the United States, often in relative obscurity. What motivated these artists to leave the USSR? Why did they chose to come to the United States? How have they fared in their new lives and careers?
In this study a sociologist and two art historians, one an emigre, the other an American, seek to answer these questions, drawing on interviews with the artists themselves and examples of their work. Together the essays provide a revealing new perspective on the lives and work of contemporary artists, the difficulties they encounter in two very different cultural worlds, and the experience of attempting a transistion from one to the other.

SPIRITUAL JOURNEYS is a gem of a book. It contains a number of essays, written by people active in ministry, and describes
their relationships with God. The greatest value of the book is that its practicality. There are lay men and women, as well
as priests and vowed religious represented in the book, all in active rather than contemplative ministry. Most of the writings
are by Catholics, and most are in ministry in either Ireland and the United States. All are involved in challenging work,
most often with the poor and downtrodden. Each has contributed a great deal to making the world better, and their good work
is a result of their relationship with God. It can be a great help and inspiration for people who are trying to find God in
their day to day lives. These writings show that God is found in the day to day, and often in places where finding God would
be thought impossible.
This book is not the easiest to find, but it is truly "a pearl of great price" in the biblical sense and can be a treasure for anyone who finds this book.
Just in case you are interested, there is an essay by a Tim Kearney in this book, but this is just a coincidence, although since it is good, maybe I should take credit for it!

Paul Kennedy's STAINED GLASS WINDOWS COLORING BOOK has sixteen panels adapted from medieval windows. What makes this collection
really neat is that the illustrations are on translucent paper -- you can color one side or both (with the same colors or
different colors, depending on the effect you want) and hang them in the window to allow them to be illuminated like the real
thing. The bold drawings and dark backgrounds also make for excellent photocopies if you slide a piece of blank white paper
behind the transparent page before you copy.

Stand Still, Summer is an impressive and enduring collection of vivid poetic descriptions of people, places, and seasons
by a poetry able to express her fantasies and fancies in a lyrical, memorable language. One Day I'll Know: One day I'll
know/The joys that come with tempered age of wisdom,/The peace that comes rewarding careful days,/When (with perhaps a teardrop
in the eye)/I lay aside the wild, bright cloak of youth/(A careless youth of unwise, vainglorious acts,/But wild and sweet
were morning suns and moons)./One day I'll feel/The quiet calm that follows every storm,/Mature, ripe thoughts that come
with only age,/Will come like ripening grapes upon the vine,/Replacing undeveloped thoughts of green/Young years; when glory
of the sunset comes/One day.

I first became acquainted with this story through Film -- one of the few movies that is every bit as good as the book. The movie is hard to find on video, and the book is hard to find on the shelf. Both are worth persisting for.
Buy the book, see the movie, and see if you agree. In America it would have been a Pulizer prize winner. In New Zealand, it was yet another superb work of art, quickly forgotten.
