This is the story of Tim an Irish labourer, his slow friend Dandy and their wifes and families living in a gaslit cobbled alley at the beggining of 1900. Read about Maud, Dandies loud American wife her beloved son, who goes off to fight in the first world war and tearaway daughter Colleen. Discover the dark secret the Brown twins accross the alley share, and their strange sister Ellen. This is an excellent book if you like to get the feel of old London and life before the Great War.

I personally know Nancy Kennedy and her book is a tribute to all NICU families and professionals. How is it that a neonatal nurse can know how a parent feels? Through insight - and Nancy has it. Thanks Nancy for understanding parents! Denise Merrill Publisher ICU Parenting Magazine

This remarkable book touched my heart. It took me into the world of seriously ill babies, not easy territory. Yet oddly, I didn't want to leave. Through Nancy Kennedy's rich and sensitive poetry and David Pegher's exquisite sketches, these babies and their parents and nurses come to vivid life. Each tiny bundle, looking precious even attached to oxygen or other medical devices, has a big personality. Each baby not only responds to love and care in a unique way, but also gives back a love so strong it is transformative, even to the reader.

Amazingly, what I felt as I was immersed in the world of infant intensive care was not pity, but wonder at the strength and dignity of us all...the babies, the parents, the caregivers.

When I finished reading I was surprised not to feel sad. As I turned back to reread it, I realized Baby Hands & Baby Feet is a powerful affirmation of life.

Not Bad At All

I'm a student and this textbook was assigned for my intro to literature class. I was surprised by how much I actually ENJOYED this textbook! There is a lot of good writing in it, some great examples of literature, which made for interesting class discussions. I even found myself reading a lot of the passages that weren't assigned, just out of curiousity, and most of them were really quite enjoyable.

A compelling choice

Overpriced like most textbooks but probably the only introductory literature anthology since Benjamin LaMott's "Close Imagining" (McGraw Hill) that I'd use a second time. It's compact yet very generous and representative. For example, you can pair "Young Goodman Brown" with "A Good Man Is Hard to Find" or "A Rose for Emily" with "Barn Burning" or "A & P" with "Araby." Most of the frequently taught poems are here, and there are more plays--from Sophocles to Arthur Miller--than would ever fit into a single-semester course. And the Appendices are priceless--more useful information than is found in popular writing Handbooks along with exemplary student essays (a particularly handy feature).

I've previously used the big Kennedy and Gioia Intro text. Not only did the binding begin to fall apart on me mid-way though the semester but the amount of material--most of it never assigned--simply added to the guilt any instructor who emphasizes close reading of individual texts is bound to feel. Also, any introductory literature course that even purports to be representative must include some examples of the most important modern genre of all--the novel. Add "Great Expectations" and "The Great Gatsby" to the course and you'll see why the shorter, more compact anthology is the only one to consider. In fact, I might even settle for a "back pocket" version.

(My experiences with the complementary (but not really "complimentary") internet site--which my students never seemed to be able to access--would suggest that it would best be ignored. Go for the DVD or a price break instead.)

Here it is, October, and my children are begging me to read from "The Beasts of Bethlehem". Even though the poems don't follow a typical children's poem meter, they love it just the same. They enjoy picking out their "favorite" animals and having me read that animal's poem. Wonderful book!!

There is a 1998 updated version of this book with a new title, "Basic Routines For Massive Muscles: Beef-It Training Secrets". I have a copy of the 1983 original.

Although the forward to Mass!, says Kennedy "...competed successfully in both weightlifting and bodybuilding contests," in Beef It! Kennedy describes himself as a hardgainer and "bodybuilding failure". Of course, as an author and publisher he is anything but a failure, and I think that this book presents a lot of good information.

Certainly, I don't expect sports writers in other sports to necessarily have been great at the sport themselves. However, one has to wonder if Kennedy's lack of personal bodybuilding success is really due to poor genetics (as he says) or some combination of that plus something else.

In this book, Kennedy promotes a high carb diet, and down-plays the need for high protein consumption. Since Vince Gironda (who said bodybuilding is 85% nutrition, and whom Kennedy is fond of quoting) had significantly more personal success with bodybuilding and as a personal trainer of professionals and actors, I'm wondering if I shouldn't consider following his dietary advice instead. Gironda was one of the first to promote high protein, low carb diets.

Ironically, Kennedy also shows up as a co-author of Gironda's book, "Unleashing the Wild Physique." Actually, I think it is a good idea to read both books to get the whole story on both viewpoints. For example, in Gironda's book, he says his gym did not have squat racks, but in Beef It! you learn that Gironda did have Smith Machines in his gym. (I found this very interesting since the place where I currently work out also does not have squat racks, but does have smith machines.)

Kennedy's ideas on protein seem to have changed in later books. In Cuts! (1989) he says everybody is different and you should "...establish your own personal requirements just as you've had to figure out how many sets of bench presses you need to work your chest best."

Anyway, Beef It! is full of interesting information and quotes. Kennedy is also not shy about boasting of the influence he has had on the sport through his articles, books, and magazine.

Unfortunately, Kennedy does not present much scientific evidence in this book to back up his ideas and so I was left wondering whether his advice is any better than anybody elses.

I would also suggest that readers check out Dr. Fred Hatfield's "Hardcore Bodybuilding, A Scientific Approach". Hatfield's book provides a specific training system based on periodization principles. It's a little harder to understand than Kennedy's writing, but worth the effort.

Please note -- This book is exactly what the title says -- a BEGINNING shepherd's manual. If, like me, you are a beginner, you'll appreciate the clear and consise language the author uses to explain sheep and various aspects of sheep production. After reading this book, you'll know what questions to ask if you're considering raising a small flock. A more advanced book on the subject is "Raising Sheep the Modern Way," which delves into more details, and which I thoroughly recommend.

This book has excellent illustrations which are a little bit larger than usual. The special advantage of this category of birding reference is that it is restricted to the species of birds that I am likely to see in my area. This type of advance filtering is a significant help.
