I would like to add my enthusiastic endorsement of Dr. Peter Kennedy's book, "The Fatal Sleep." The goal of this extremely interesting and easy to read narration is "to tell the non-scientist about the history and profound importance of human African trypanosomiasis, aka sleeping sickness." Dr. Kennedy has attained his goal in a way that enlightens both the `Dark Continent' and basic science. The book begins with a description of Kenya at the turn of the millennium and flashes over 30 years back to Peter's life as a young medical student at University College London. What follows is a fantastic telling of the events that led him to Africa - 18 individual times - to establish a research program and conduct research in field stations and to become one of the world's leading clinical scientists not only treating those with the disease, but studying the trypanosome and mentoring medical students to follow in his footsteps. Reading "The Fatal Sleep" is like listening to a story told by a friend who has the time to answer your questions. Like how is life in Africa, what are copper mines, who really was David Livingstone, what is an immune system, why should we be interested in sleeping sickness, and what is the prospect for the future. Peter's command of the (real) English language paints vivid pictures; for example, driving on a rain soaked road that is no more than a memory in the drive's mind. However his description of the African night sky is especially enchanting. Dr. Kennedy's book is well worth the time and his imagery will stay with the reader forever. The Fatal Sleep is a book for all to read, enjoy and find solace that teams of dedicated doctors and scientists are diligently working for the betterment of people suffering from a disease whose cure is often fatal.

A fresh look at one of Africa's most deadly disease

Dr. Kennedy's book, The Fatal Sleep, is a wonderful narrative on one of Africa's neglected diseases - African Sleeping Sickness. The disease caused by the free-swimming, single cell parasite called the African trypanosome is also arguably the most deadly of the parasitic diseases that plague humankind, including malaria. Even the treatment used to eradicate the trypanosome once it enters the brain can be fatal.

The book is highly informative and presented in a way that is understandable to the non-medical person. Highly entertaining stories of his experiences from the copper mines of Zambia to the Kenyan/Ugandan highlands and clearly written historical accounts and scientific explanations on the complexities of the parasite's life cycle between the tsetse fly vector and man or animal make this book a joy to read.

I recommend this book to anyone who has a fascination with all that is Africa, including the adventure of safari. Physicians, nurses and others in the medical field, not to mention the research scientists who study the disease will also benefit from what this book has to say.

The Sleeping Sickness - biologically fascinating ,deadly to humans and animals.

The spectrum of disease in the tropics is quite different from that elsewhere. Some of the diseases are both exotic biologically and important medically. HIV disease is a pertinent example, in which an unusual type of virus, spreading worldwide from Africa, causes an especially cruel (and frequently fatal) disease. A less well known (in the West) example is the "sleeping sickness", or African trypanosomiasis. This disease renders large parts of Africa uninhabitable for both humans and domestic animals. It is a progressive neurological disease, leading always to death in the untreated patient. Treated patients often do not fare much better.

This book is the personal story of the author, a distinguished neurovirologist who became interested in Africa after spending some time there while in medical school. It is part autobiography, part travelogue, part medical and neurologic treatise, all blended together in a harmonious way. The author supplies interesting details about conducting research in an unfamiliar environment and emphasizes the need to support and collaborate with the very considerable scientific talent already present there.

I enjoyed reading this book and recommend it.

This is a remarkable book. I say this as one who has explored this subject in my own writings and who, as a result, understand just how difficult it can be to write about this subject skillfully and in a way that matters. Anyone who has read "how-to" books on spirituality knows how often they suffer from well-intention generalizations which are less than helpful. This book explores four ways in which we can achieve spiritual connection with the Divine--the way of devotion, of action, of contemplation and of self-mastery--and it does so with great clarity and specificity (the latter particularly well done). It is never simplistic. Nor does it underestimate the difficulties involved, although it makes one feel that with proper understanding and commitment, such union is definitely possible. The author demonstrates a rich familiarity with various religions, both eastern and western, and with various spiritual disciplines, and does a first-rate job of discussing these with dexterity, relevance and, again clarity and specificity. The goal of the book is to offer us an individualized path to union, to connection, and one important aspect is its recognition that because each of us IS an individual, our path to such union will vary. We must, it's made clear, find our own way with the tools offered us in the book. This demonstrates great and proper respect for the individual as he or she pursues that path, rather than supposing wrongly that one path will fit all.

The suggested reading list at the back of the book is a rich one. And I very much appreciated the treasure trove of useful quotations from religious and spiritual leaders and scholars, all of it skillfully employed to make various points more clear and therefore more useable. There is also included a very useful chart of the four paths, which acts as a kind of summary of the text, and which one can regularly consult as one makes various choices along the way.

How can I tell you what this meant to me!!!

What understanding I have just received from reading Four Paths to Union !! I've known of Bhakti and Karma yoga, but not much of the other two paths. I recognized a ton of practices from all over the spiritual board, but I've always been confused as to any order or way of holding it all. So many practices are coming from "my way is the way" that it has been impossible for me to sort out value in the larger picture or the value to me. I am eternally grateful for this clear map! The metaphor of the mountain and the different approaches/directions was fabulous! I've NEVER known what my spiritual path was since I don't have a specific teaching or teacher. I loved all the directives that were given to go even deeper into the path. Now I am looking forward to reading "my chapter" in much greater depth. The chapter on religions and paths saved me about 10,000 hours of reading and classes in the history of religions! What a remarkable and easy to get synthesis!! I can count the books that have had such an impact on me on one hand. A thousand blessings to the author for the gift this is going to be to many on their spiritual journey.

This book has been yearning to be written for all of us in a spiritual search, and for all of us who would like an objective exposition of the different ways of conducting a spiritual search. I think it is of great use to people who help people.

I have not read a book like it. The paths of devotion, action, self-mastery and contemplation are described with exquisite clarity, illumined by quotes I wanted to write down, and given a breadth of application that enjoyed deep resonances with my experience. These paths would be recognized in the different yogas, such as bhakta and jnaña, in the different schools of Buddhist and Christian devotion, meditation, and service.

As a psychologist I am at times sitting across from people who have, parallel to or imbedded in psychological symptoms, an urging to do spiritual work, or some inner voice demanding spiritual development. This is now the first book I think of recommending.

Teresa Kennedy has written a book with very good, clear and practical information addressing both mystical and scientific aspects of crystals and gemstones. The book is divided into sections such as "The Love Stones" "Stones of protection ", "Stones for physical healing ", etc., with some stones occurring in more than one of the nine categories. This is an extremely useful book for a beginner and will be a valuable addition to any crystal library.
I have over 50 crystal healing books and have written quite a bit about crystal healing myself. This book is one I'll recommend highly. There is no perfect crystal healing book and there probably never will be, but this is one of the best I have seen yet. I practice different styles of crystal healing and use some more intuitive methods than the author, so a few of my personal recommendations might be different. This is a very good book and if you can get only one book about crystals, this is the one I'd suggest. This book has relatively little information about detailed methods of working with crystals but that is probably an asset. The Author gives sound advice and guidance based on her experience and allows the reader to determine the way they will work with the stones. Each stone entry has a color photograph of the stone. This book could be very useful for helping someone choose stones to work with for specific purposes. This is a very solid guide with a lot for both beginners and as a reference for more advanced practitioners.

Awesome!

Clear, concise and engaging...Kennedy's insight into the world of crystals and gemstones is engaging and informative. Illustrated with great 4-color photos for readers to easily identify stones in their natural state, the book is a winner. Lots of history, lots of research and lots of insight that crystal lovers won't want to miss. There are quite a few crystal books out there, but this is definitely THE one to own for anybody who wants to learn about the qualities of crystals and minerals and why they have enchanted us for centuries. I love this book! Kudos!

Obviously a great number of books of crystals have appeared in the last twenty years since the resurgence of interest in crystal healing occurred in the early 1980s. Therefore when a new title comes along which clarities existing knowledge, has a pleasing layout, and includes large clear photographs of each specimen, then it warrants inclusion on the bookshelf of any stone enthusiast or healer. However, when it goes beyond meticulous organization of information and ease of use, and also has its information presented by a level headed narrator with pleasing tone and seems to offer just the right amount of information on each stone, it just may be the book you find yourself reaching for first.

Starting with the premise that her readers are intelligent, reasonably open-minded and interested in the practical application of the stones into their lives, Teresa quickly establishes a down-to-earth sensibility that encourages a combination approach to the use of stones. She advocates understanding stones from a structural as well spiritual perspective before selecting your healing stones. She also includes a lot of very practical advice in highlighted in pink "Buyer Beware" sections so that you stand the best chance of avoiding some of the inferior or inauthentic merchandise that is on the market.

The layout of the book undertakes to guide the reader quickly to the correct stone by arranging the stones into categories such as "love stones" or "stones of transformation" so you can find what you need quickly. If you already have a stone or a specific idea of the stone you would like, no problem -- there is an extensive index at the back.

These poems, from a professor at Emporia State University in Kansas, are from an astute observer of the Great Plains landscape. Using the landscape as a backdrop, Heldrich searches for meaning and revelation in our everyday lives. In his unforgettable poem "Momentum," while driving to Tulsa, he takes note of the cast off trash along the way and yet finds in such an everyday experience "...an unsung love to it, a love of the highway, a love of the country, a love of people and their wasteful bodies so deep the momentum drives me home." In poem after poem, forty-six in all, the reader is made aware of our surroundings and the sometimes taken-for-granted events in our everyday life and urged to celebrate life amidst all of it's uncertainities and limitations. For Heldrich, he shares some of his simple beliefs used to ward off the void in a wonderful poem "Good Friday:" ...the returning sun at breakfast, the beautiful coupling of our lake's geese, the rising green after prairie burnings, the silence of Sunday morning at home, or how my wife fills an empty room with light." For the reader looking for faith, hope, charity, and reconciliation without the usual touchy-feely verse, this is one of the best. An exceptional collection.

In this compelling biography, award winning author, Deborah Heiligman, captures the spirit of the handsome, charismatic President, Jack Kennedy, who won the hearts of Americans and people around the world. Born to a wealthy Massachusetts family, Jack had been taught at an early age that his mission was to serve others. The hopes of the family really resided in his older brother Joe, but when Joe died, Jack stepped into his shoes, and despite serious medical problems, became the youngest person ever to be elected President. Accompanied by stunning photographs this eloquent biography is the perfect choice for family sharing.

I've been looking for a good book on JFK to share with my sixth grade class and I'm happy to have found it here! The text is very kid friendly and full of compelling stories from JFK's childhood. The author's style is perfectly suited to the layout of pictures and children can come away with not only important facts, but the feeling that they've spent some private time with the Kennedy family. I learned things I never knew and was very moved by some of the quotes and stories. This is just the book I was hoping to find, for the author has taken a leader and an ikon in American history and presented him in a new and fresh way. I especially liked the author's handling of JFK's early, formative years. After all that's been written about this man and his presidency it's amazing to me how inspiring this book was. I found lots of ways to spin off on this material. Anyone wanting to share the life of this very unique president with school age children could do no better than High Hopes.

Victor Lasky made it simple. He took up for many of Kennedy's faults - faults that are evident in all of us - and exposed many of the political undermoorings that made JFK who he was. JFK is portrayed as having a lot more in common with Bill Clinton than Jesus Christ (the figure whom Kennedy mythmakers make JFK sound like). He exposes the brokering over the 1956 and 1960 VP selections - and given the results since then for the Democrats - seven defeats in eleven elections and both candidates who won from the South - it reads like a prophecy of what would happen to the Democratic Party.

Yet you won't really hate JFK. You'll simply see him as a politician who would do anything to move up. How's that any different from anyone else?

Lasky's book was a best-seller, at least by his standards. But he quickly pulled this book out of print in honor of JFK's sudden death in Dallas. Three years later, he was prompted by some friends to reprint it and added a bitter conclusion to all of the Kennedy years.
As hard-hitting as this book is, he is rather gentlemanly about it and leaves most of the criticisms on the practical and intellectual level. In fact the one he really berates in this book is Arthur Schlesinger in some very funny asides. Back to the point, Lasky ultimately concludes that JFK was an indecisive and feckless President who meant well but didn't do well. And, in spite of what others might say about him, he never amounted to much; only becoming a hero because of his death.
Lasky was the last of an old breed. He simply reports to you what JFK really said and did and leaves out his opinion until the end, in a brutal summation. Factual, but witty and lively, the book is a quick and damning summation that brushes away entirely the Kennedy myth and portrays all of the players, JFK, RFK, and Joseph P. Kennedy in realistic lights.
He could have gone much harsher with the book but he didn't, in fact, it was his other books RFK, The Man and the Myth, and It Didn't Start with Watergate, that reveal more brutal information on his tumultuous tenure in office.

Still a great read many times over after 41 years!

FRATERNAL LIVES INTERTWINED IN FRATERNAL LOYALTY
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-23
It is impossible to write about Robert Kennedy without including his brother, John Kennedy. Robert Kennedy was the brother who exemplified fraternal loyalty in his tireless efforts to promote Jack and to serve him during his tenure as president. Robert Kennedy was the man who, to some extent worked behind the scenes to promote his older brother. It has been said that a more devoted or more dedicated show of brotherly love in public office has yet to be found.

The one down side to Robert Kennedy's efforts is that he often sublimated his own identity, interests and needs so as to promote his brother. It is only in the tragic aftermath of President Kennedy's death does Robert Kennedy fully emerge as his own person. The same hard work ethic he applied behind the scenes is shown to the public at large. Robert Kennedy does indeed find his voice and his forte, which is commanding the interest and attention of his public. The man who would be president in 1968 becomes a symbol of hope -- he is the voice representing the disenfranchised, the minorities and those living in poverty. He is the man who becomes personally involved with a large segment of the population that had, up until recent history been excluded from many public fora. It is to Robert Kennedy's credit that he makes himself aware of such issues. Indeed, this book treats the brothers with respect and as with any work about Robert Kennedy, one is always left with the question of what would have been had this man lived to be elected president in 1968.
