Finally, a poetic tribute to a geniusReview Date: 2007-12-09
Raymond Meier is a top-notch fashion photographer and I first became acquainted with his work through Vogue and other fashion publications. Just as fashion can come alive when clothing get worn by models, Meier conveys the essence of Kahn's capital complex for Dhaka by showing the project in relation to its people. Meier wants to tell us a story in his own way. He does not wow the readers with an impressive front cover photo of Kahn's design, as most books do in order to boost sales. Instead, he introduces readers to the context of the project before showing the buildings, so they can more fully appreciate Kahn's thoughtfulness.
The covers of the twin set volume (one of Meier's photos and the other of archived construction photos) are simply and tastefully fabric-bound, with a small floor plan of the assembly building embossed in the middle. The initial photos are portraits of ordinary citizens in Dhaka, going about their daily activities, making a living, or enjoying a break. Meier is showing us, "This is Dhaka, an impoverished but lively and colorful city. This is what Louis Kahn first saw when he arrived, this is where he would build."
When we finally glimpse the monumental buildings they appear as a backdrop to the ordinary people featured in the foreground. Meier's photos highlight the spirit of Kahn's design - it is built by the people for the people. There are no barricades or gates to separate Dhaka's citizens from the country's center of authority. One photo shows a cleaner sweeping piles of garbage from the steps leading up to the main building. Unlike the gilded Versailles or the colossal, flaming-red walls of the Forbidden City, Kahn's design invites and endears rather than intimidates and denies. People respond by congregating around it.
And they dwell in it, too. As Meier zooms in on the buildings and design details we see children hanging out and playing around the complex. Women rest and chat away at the site. Inside, Meier shows government officials conducting business in their offices, workers enjoying their lunch break, and of course, the interesting proportions and details of Kahn's timeless design. Kahn was a genius with light, shape, and material and Meier makes sure we grasp that. Meier also shows aerial views of the capital complex, how its simplicity and elegance blend in seamlessly with the rest of Dhaka. The thoughtfully and beautifully compiled album is an effective and moving tribute to the colossal feat Louis Kahn performed. It underscores the tragedy that the master builder passed away before seeing his vision completed.

Good HandbookReview Date: 2003-02-06
by Jeffrey P. Kahn, Alan M. Langlieb (Jossey-Bass) Efficiency and employee well-being are more important than ever to the overall success of organizations. Emotions are key to understanding executive effectiveness, organizational change, and corporate ethics. Stress, burnout, depression, drug abuse, violence, and other mental health problems are costing businesses billions of dollars every year in lost productivity and costs of ineffective treatment.
Mental Health and Productivity in the Workplace is a comprehensive and practical guide to identifying, understanding, preventing, and resolving individual and organizational mental health problems in the workplace. Originally published as Mental Health in the Workplace (Van Nostrand/ Wiley, 1993), this completely revised, updated, and expanded edition represents the most current thinking in the field and contains contributions from an expert panel of organizational and occupational psychiatrists. With 50 percent more chapters, this new edition adds essential material on creating systems and cultures that encourage organizational productivity and employee mental health and on finding cost-effective, quality mental health care. The book focuses on problems that start "at the top" (executive dysfunction), as well as on the effects of organizational structure, office politics, chronic change, downsizing and employment uncertainty, officewide emotional crises, and aspects of organizational development. In addition, this helpful resource includes information about such basic issues as anxiety, stress, burnout, depression, drug and alcohol abuse, violence, and psychosis.
Written for executive management, human resource, benefits, occupational medicine, and mental health professionals, this essential handbook offers an emotionally informed guide to cost-effective implementation of policies for maximum productivity.

Bien des années plus tard, le roi d'Israël détrône ressuscite pour nous l'image de la fière reine noire dont la beauté et le caractère firent vaciller sa raison, mais qu'il sut conduire sur le chemin de la sagesse.

A Warm Personal Glimpse into Edgar Cayce and His TimesReview Date: 2007-11-20
In addition, Kahn, who achieved great financial success by following the information that came through Cayce from "the forces," also sent thousands of people, including leaders in government, industry, and entertainment, to receive their own psychic readings.
Furthermore, because Cayce's readings are all numbered to preserve the anonymity of the recipient of the reading, I always enjoy learning some of the names associated with the readings especially for the major players in the Cayce saga. Some of them are relatively easy to figure out in his book.
I had always wondered just what occurred to hamper the discovery of oil in a certain location in Texas as predicted by Cayce's trance source. Kahn, who was there, tells the story of stolen tools and granite blocks dropped into the drill holes.
I also found it intriguing to learn the way Cayce's readings were interpreted during his lifetime. Cayce died in 1945 and, although he was well-known in the US, his world-wide popularity did not grow until recently. There are now lectures and study groups available to people all over the world, and also many books written about him. Therefore, I found it especially interesting to read about Cayce's non-trance ideas of the meaning of the information that came through him while he was in trance.
For example, Cayce's psychic source said that Kahn would be successful in financial enterprises involving "wood and metal." What does that mean, I wondered. The lumber industry? The product is wood but the means of producing it requires metal. It turned out that Kahn interpreted it to mean the furniture business. The book provides descriptions of letters exchanged between the psychic and the financier. Or, in any case, when he received an offer to work in the furniture industry, he felt confident that this was his correct path.
I wondered, would I have interpreted a reading given for me--if I had been fortunate enough to have received a reading--as accurately as Kahn did? How different it must have been to have known Cayce before he had a huge organization around his teachings as there is now at Edgar Cayce's A.R.E. in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Although this is not a biography in the same sense that There Is a River: The Story of Edgar Cayce or Edgar Cayce: The Sleeping Prophet or Edgar Cayce: Mystery Man of Miracles, this book really gives you a glimpse into the real Edgar Cayce written by a man who knew him well.

My oldest Son looked forward to working in this series & accomplished all four books in the Fifth & Sixth year in one year. His eagerness to learn was stemmed by these books & how well they were written. He pulled these books out day & night.
He now, plants gardens, harvests wild fruits, returns wildlife to safety if compromised, saves rabbits, snakes, turtles & birds from predators (so far, I imagine there'll be more animals rescued). He has took it one step further & now raises Chicken Hens & chicks. He works for Farmers & Recyclers now too. He loves to fish & investigate waterways, timbers, ditches for wildflowers, berries & vegetables. You name it, he's investigating nature most of the time. He's 14 years old now.
These books are rare to come by. You won't go wrong purchasing this series. A wonderful thematic Science curriculum that incorporates art, writing, interesting facts, additional reading & investigation throughout each chapter.
