Summer Storm and After the StormReview Date: 2008-02-10
A Memorable Coming of Age StoryReview Date: 2007-11-02
Many decades ago, I wrote in the front of my paperback copy of this novel "A Great Story--very tender!"
Set in Florida in the early 1940s, this novel follows the adventures of Terry Calder, a schoolboy who is on the run truant officers. He roams the Everglades and meets an old man. McCree, who has lived outside the law for decades, teaches Terry much about life during the hot summer.
If you haven't read Richard Bradford's "Red Sky At Morning," I would highly recommend this coming-of-age novel (set in New Mexico in the 1940s).
Red Sky at Morning: A Novel (Perennial Classics)
I would also highly recommend the modern cowboy story "Golden Rod," by Herbert Harker
Goldenrod
These novels are a way of reliving our youth. Frank Lloyd Wright said something to the effect that: "Youth is a fact of birth, but being young is a state of mind."
I hope you liked my little review. I think long reviews are better after you read a novel. I don't like knowing too much before I read a story. Thanks

Wonderful Reading Resource to build on Guiding Readers and WritersReview Date: 2006-11-11
This book is loaded with resources for teachers. It comes with an interactive DVD to show teachers exactly what they are describing as mini lessons. This was truly the most helpful to me - being able to see teachers in action, working with students, using the techniques I had just read about helped to enable me to create the same learning environment and use the same techniques. The DVD also includes over 100 blackline masters/forms/worksheets ready to use! As a teacher, that in it's self is worth $100 not to have to make everything yourself!
This book uses a variety of methods to deepen comprehension that overlap into to guided reading within the classroom. Interactive read-aloud using picture books is just one way I started deepening comprehension within my classroom using this book. Just two months in, I can see the difference in how my kids are reading and understanding! This is just one of the many pieces I use within reading workshop. The more and more I do this, the more I see my kids using skills that we've pointed out in reading workshop in their writing! This book helps kids think 'about the text', 'beyond the text', and 'within the text'.
This book also helps teachers (of any reading grade) set-up running records to increase fluency. Within the blackline masters, the forms are ready to use, and the layout is easy to use! I am able to do this while my kids are writing in their reader's notebooks or doing independent reading. This is a great tool to help assess where a child is and where a child should be.
This book is a powerful tool if used in combination with Guiding Readers and Writers. Teachers of all ages can find this book filled with useful strategies and practical ideas to use within their reading class.
PS - If you have a chance, check out Heinemann's website. Fountas and Pinnell are doing conferences across the US on small sections of this book. If you have a chance to go, they are well worth it!

Must-Have bookReview Date: 2006-06-17
It explains how kids learn math and the connections that need to be made from one concept to the next. It also has assessments to help determine each student's level of understanding and how they are solving problems.
I can't wait to start trying these activities in the fall. A must-have book for all K-3 teachers!

Fragments of a larger ideaReview Date: 2007-10-29
After reading "Sculpting in Time" (which I suggest is important reading to understand tarkovsky and his work), I was hoping that his diaries would shed some light as to the inner workings of the mind of a cinematic genius. Despite many moments of creative prose, and interesting streams of thoughts, on the whole, I was disappointed. I felt as if I were a distant observer to his memories and daily entries. Perhaps some of the work is dry because he didn't intend to have this published, whereas "Sculpting in Time" was (hence the more coherent, poetic and dynamic work) for the audience. It is a good read, the blood and guts of the artist himself, but once again, I would read Sculpting first.

He even details the program to turn the old warhorses into satellite launch vehicles and the remaining silo, now a musuem in Arizona.
Like the previous reviewer, I would have liked to seen some info on the Titan II and the Gemini program.
If you're a space or Cold War buff, read this book, then visit the silo/museum in Green Valley, Ariz.

Amazing detail but perhaps overly technicalReview Date: 2005-10-04
That being said, this book is probably overly technical except for the most detail-oriented student of history. One literally learns every serial number of every missile and the names and ranks of all military personnel down to every team member on every missile crew. I found that intimidating for someone with my level of interest, which is more than the average lay person and less than the professional historian.
The level of technical details is so exceptional that it almost reads like a military briefing book. I wish there had been more about the people, the mission, the Cold War, but perhaps the author thought those matters were better left for others.
For someone wanting to know just what Titan II was all about, this may not be the book. It can be, but it will require a lot of skipping over of the very detailed sections and possibly a second reading if the first one leaves a thirst for more detail. I did not mind the intense level of detail, but I give it four stars for this reason.

Great read!Review Date: 2001-04-17
I like Laredo, the American outlaw who joined the Mexican bandits. His whimsies about home, about eating cherry-topped sundae was really touching. You can actually feel his emotion, how much he missed home, and yet unable to return because he was a wanted man. I like Rafaga too, the outlaw leader, who was a very charismatic man. His mistress committed a crime which amounted to punishment, and despite his heavy heart and sadness, he continued on with the punishment.
Sheila, the Texan heiress, was rather petulant, for me. But I admire her survival spirit and courage. Not many would be like that in her position.
The ending, like all the Janet Dailey books I read so far was rather abrupt and left to the reader to contemplate further what happened next.
A great read.
