My daughter loves this book--we got it out of the library so many times she finally begged me to buy it.

Mouth watering

Each one of the seven chapters in this mouth (excuse me, book) full of word play is more scrumptious than the last.

There's a chapter on the people behind famous dishes--like the sandwich and Graham Crackers. Readers can also devour tasty treats from the map--like Bacon, Georgia; Cherry, Nebraska; Rice, Minnesota; Hominy, Oklahoma and Pine Apple, Alabama, for starters.

The third chapter revels through menus full of meat. Or so it seems until we learn that hush-puppies are not really dogs and steaks named Tartare don't come from central Asia. Horseradishes of course don't gallop across your plate, and hot dogs, like hush puppies had an interesting etymology.

The fourth chapter covers some of the sweetest goodies you're ever likely to eat, including Chess pie (made with a filling of sugar, cream and eggs), lollypops (including how they got their name), pie in general (and the derivation of that term), Sundaes and pretzels.

Kids will also find out about bakers' dozens, and various other gastronomical odds and ends.

But my favorite parts are the bite-sized Food For Thought sections in each chapter. One lists various laws on various books about various illegal practices related to food--like throwing banana peels on the sidewalk in Waco, Taxes or putting cake in a cookie jar in Joliet, Illinois. Another lists food festivals. January is Carrot Festival month in Holtville, California, for example, while February hosts California Kiwifruit Day and the annual pancake race between Olney, England and Liberal, Kansas.

Events that made candy history will tickle kids with a sweet tooth. Those who fib now and then may enjoy Phoney Baloney, you know, stuff that's not really what it's called on the menu. (Examples include head cheese, Bombay duck, peanuts and Welsh rabbit).

My kids love this book. It's mouth-watering fun. Alyssa A. Lappen

ECG Notes: Interpretation And Management Guide

This book saved me during my ECG rotation! I think the author tells it all in her preface to the book:

No one is born knowing how to read ECG strips. We learn to do many things in a lifetime, and nearly all of them get better with practice. If you're planning to use this book, ECG isn't completely new to you--you have a good idea of what's involved in generating and interpreting a tracing.

ECG Success covers all the information you will need--anatomy and physiology, practice, and case scenarios, and relevant emergency care--to help you feel competent and in control, whether the situation involves an emergency or just a nonthreatening ECG. This book has staying power. You will find its content useful across a spectrum of situations, from classroom study through clinical experience and later in actual practice.

Pattern recognition lies at the heart of ECG interpretation. This skill develops with experience, gained through repetition and variety. You need to see the same patterns over and over again, but you also need to see as great a diversity as possible. In ECG Success you'll find more than 550 ECG tracings.

The book is organized into four units. First, two introductory chapters review the background information you need for working with ECG. Chapter One discusses heart anatomy and physiology, including biomechanics and electrophysiology. Chapter Two gives you the basics of ECG: limb and chest leads, electrode placement, cable connections, components of a tracing, rhythm strip analysis, and more.

In Unit II, seven chapters explain and illustrate the different types of rhythm, some dangerous, others merely troublesome, and a few even normal. Each of these chapters gives you a group of nine practice strips to analyze, with the answers given at the end of the chapter. All types of arrhythmias are discussed and illustrated: sinus, atrial, junctional, and ventricular; atrioventricular and bundle branch blocks; artifact; and artificial pacemaker rhythm. The section ends with a chapter on myocardial infarction and the 12-lead ECG.

The chapter practice strips will warm you up for Unit III, the working core of the book. You'll find four test chapters with a total of 300 strips and the answers given at the end of each chapter so you can check your work. In case you're hungry for more, the two chapters in Unit IV comprise eleven real-life case studies, followed by multiple-choice questions and illustrated by more ECG strips. Four appendices round out the book: Healthcare Provider Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Advanced Cardiac Life Support Protocols, Emergency Medications, and Emergency Medical Skills.

As you page through this book you'll find some special features to guide you. In Units I and II, frequent Clinical Tips provide valuable information on how an arrhythmia can affect the patient. Hints on rhythm interpretation appear throughout the first practice strip chapter.

I couldn't have written this book without building up a track record of my own ECG successes. The secret: I had a good instructor who was patient and explained everything in detail. She kept emphasizing that we had to follow every step when analyzing a rhythm; shortcuts are dangerous because you can miss critical details on the rhythm strip. Then we had to practice, practice, practice. That repetition, combined with careful attention to every step, was the real key to my success.

Take your time now, and use ECG Success to improve your skills. Once you run into a genuine emergency you will have only minutes, or less, to interpret the ECG correctly and ensure the right treatment for the patient.

Most up-to-date fantastic ECG book!

ECG Notes: Interpretation And Management Guide

The key to ECG interpretation is pattern recognition, and pattern recognition is developed the same way as any skill--through repetition.

ECG Success illustrates the key features of all arrhythmias and presents multiple practice strips to allow the student to learn the subtle findings that help distinguish one from another. Organized by the seven categories of arrhythmias, ECG Success reviews the basics of ECGs (anatomy, physiology, electrophysiology, etc.), and provides a diverse group of strips for practice and testing pattern recognition. In addition, the book includes four practice tests, each with 75 randomized ECG strips, and a unit with more than ten case studies with multiple-choice questions and more ECG strips.

ECG Success covers all the information needed--anatomy and physiology, practice, case scenarios, and relevant emergency care--to help the reader feel competent and in control, whether faced with a nonthreatening ECG or an emergency situation.

A much needed reappraisal

Edith Wharton until recently has not received the interest and praise she deserved as one of the finest American authors -- was it because she was wealthy and female? Because people thought she was simply a protege of Henry James? Or because her books rarely had happy endings? Fortunately, a new generation is reappraising her work and finding much of value in it, from her critique of early 20th century American society and subtle assessment of man-woman relationships to her wonderfully textured and evocative style. RWB Lewis, who must be the foremost Wharton scholar today, brings Wharton to life in this book -- her tremendous intelligence, the terrific emotional hardships she endured, her great capacity for friendships and amazing zest for life. Wharton got started late as an author, not publishing her first book until nearly 40 -- because she had to overcome a tremendous hurdle -- being born into a society where women writers simply did not exist. Everything she accomplished thus was purely out of her own drive to communicate and create. If you haven't read much Wharton, I recommend also The Age of Innocence, The Custom of the Country, The House of Mirth, and any short stories you can lay your hands on.

I had to read this for a college class about 10 years ago and was reluctant at first. It turned out to be a very interesting, informative book. It's quite large, but enjoyable - the pictures were especially fascinating, especially of Edith's various homes throughout her lifetime.

Comprehensive and in depth coverage of Basic EMT instruction. I am instructed at a public safety training facility in New York and these texts are the core of our curricula. The "You are the provider" and EMT-B Tips insets and bold print volcabulary in each chapter tie you to real life scenario vinettes; a great tool to help take the covered material in each section of text "to the street".

This book is wonderful for little ones that are just being introduced to puzzles. The pieces are sturdy, and the jigs aren't so complicated that they are difficult to put together (it is really just wavy). My son is three, and absolutely LOVES looking at the book and doing the puzzles.

Emerging - A step step beyond...

This book has changed the face of our early childhood program. It has become our journal and map to providing a more appropriate child directed program. I have found that it released our teachers from the bounderies that surrounded them by guiding them to a classroom that is focused on the children's interest and yet provided an approach that was within reach. Emergent was always a frightening concept - but this book brought it down to earth for the staff by walking them through a year long journey of group of teachers - many of them with personalities that are similar to ourselves - breaking down each step and showing the simplicity of the concept. I recommend that this be a guide to all early childhood programs that step forward in their quest to providing a developmentally appropriate enviroment for their children

An absolute MUST HAVE for those working with young children!

Emergent curriculum is the idea that the themes and activities which happen in a preschool program should center on the interests of the children. FOr teachers who already have this child-centered philosophy, this book is an enjoyable read and an important step in moving towards the Project Approach. For those who are used to teaching with a theme-a-week, pre-written lesson plans (or something similar), this book takes you on a journey of transformation in a very relaxed way. As an early childhood teacher for over 15 years, this is the book that is first on my recommendations for teachers or programs wishing to provide high quality education. It is an easily readable book, mixing good practice with real characters for a book which at times reads like a good novel.

When it was published in 1992 this book was the first significant scholarly biography of the emperor Domitian (ruled AD 81-96) since 1894. The author is an Associate Professor and a leading specialist in Flavian political and prosopographical history, and has produced a very reliable, readable work that is a critical and valuable interpretive synthesis of the considerable modern scholarship relating to Domitian. The study is organized thematically and with a very solid prosopographical approach. The first chapter examines the social and political rise of Domitian's family, his early life and role under his father Vespasian and brother Titus (both emperors). The next two chapters provide a detailed examination of Domitian's court and his relationship with his courtiers. These are then followed by two chapters on Domitian's financial, administrative and provincial policies. Chapters 6 and 7 examine the major wars of Domitian's reign and his military and foreign policies.! After these there are two chapters on the senatorial and equestrian aristocracy during Domitian's reign, and his relationship with them and other policies and problems. The conclusion completes the study with detailed end-notes and an exhaustive bibliography. The three indices (on persons, ancient authors and general subjects) at the end of the book are very useful and effective. For serious scholars of this period this biography is an indispensable work. A more recent biography of Domitian with a psychological approach ('Domitian: Tragic tyrant') is in many ways simply based upon the present study.

a balanced and helpful portrait of an important Roman figure

The Emperor Domitian presided over a period in which many of the later New Testament texts were written, such as Revelation and the Gospel of John. Close study of the reign of Domitian provides enormous insight into these biblical texts and the situations they addressed for their own readers. Jones' biography of Domitian should be standard reading for anyone seeking to understand the world that generated such claims for Jesus as "savior of the world" (John 4) and "Lord and God" (John 20), both attributed to Domitian. One of the great strengths of Jones' book is its placing of Seutonius' own "Twelve Caesars" in historical context. Many previous interpretations of the lives of the caesars took Suetonius as a reporter, rather than as the imperial propagandist for his patron that he was.

Very readable and highly recommended.
