A fresh story that will make kids smile
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-11-17
Ursula Jones has created a fresh story about the traditional witch. In this book, children will identify with the characters as the witch's children look like normal, modern age children. The witch herself looks like "today's mom" with long, beautiful hair--as described by a six year old girl who read the story--and a purple dress with matching jewelry. Students will enjoy the silly and funny characters as well as the plot, and they will enjoy the new spin Jones has given to the tradional "princess and prince" fairy tale. Students will also be captured by the illustrations as they make the story alive with movement and magic.
This is a story that kids wouldn't want to miss!

Perfect match of illustration and story!!!

As a parent this is my very favorite children's Halloween book! I keep thinking about it and how much I love the humor, illustrations and story - all combining to offer a hilarious, clever, unique and fantastically interesting Halloween adventure. The story is absolultely fresh and even in that the teller has mastered her idea so completely that the delivery is flawless. From the littlest Witch Child who keeps falling down because she's laughing so hard to the wonderful description another reviewer cited about the MOMMY! incantation - every page is a new thrill in fun and joy. The illustrations are captivating, subtle yet on-spot in the characters' expressions, simplicity and believability. The Witches Children could be anyone's children and that is why this book is so funny and enjoyable. Buy it and be ready for some fun and laughter!!!

hilarious, and beautifully illustrated

we read this book multiple times a day with my daughters' names replacing the names of the children. they love the story and discuss it as if they were part of it. it reminds us of Knufflebunny - such lovely interpretation of one of the best times of life, when the incantation "MOMMY!" will solve just about everything.

I am a mother and a school teacher. And, this book as well as other of the "Bailey City Monster" and "The Bailey School Kids", books are great for all ages. I have shared these books with others and given many away as gifts to friends and family. When you read these books, you can think of students that you know and children who remind you of each of the characters. I just wish that I knew where I could get a brooch like Mrs. Jeepers!

Real Baseball, Real People

Tom Jones is apparently this author's real name, and he has an ear for the real people who bring us the real game of big-league baseball. Done in a Studs Terkel style, "Working at the Ballpark" lets us know what it's really like behind the scenes on game day in the voices of the people who make the games possible. A must for any baseball fan.

Unique and Fascinating

This is an entertaining book. I like how the author preserves the speaking styles of the 50 baseball people interviewed. This makes for very enjoyable reading. I especially enjoyed reading about batting, hitting, and coaching techniques from people like Leo Mazzone, Ron Jackson, and Mike Hargrove. I also enjoyed peeking into clubhouses to see what really goes on, to read about the tensions between ballplayers and the media, and to read how plain folks like ushers, beer vendors, and mascots make their living. I recommend this book strongly.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in readking about baseball from a different perspective. If Studs Terkel had written a baseball book, this is probably what it would have read like.

easy to read; would appeal to me or to a baseball fanatic

50 interviews with people with ALL SORTS of careers at a ballpark--players, clubhouse workers, mascot, landscaping, announcer, ballpark vendors (food, beer, etc.).
My favorite interviews were the ballpark architect, the umpire, the shortstop who goes to art galleries when he travels around the US, and the "from Connecticut" ticket hustler.

I like that I can read one interview at a time or several in a row.

This would be a good gift for any man. I will keep it in mind for the impossible-to-shop-for 15-25 year old. It also strikes me as a good graduation gift because everyone in the book talks about how they came to have that job.

I am female 32 years with limited interest in pro sports...

I ENJOYED THIS BOOK NOT ONLY AS A XS1100 OWNER PAST AND PRESENT, BUT AS A MOTORCYCLIST IN GENERAL. IT IS WELL WRITTEN WITH JUST ENOUGH PATHOS TO KEEP YOU INTERESTED. UPON READING MANY OF THE CHAPTERS I WAS STRUCK WITH THE SENSE OF "BEEN THERE, DONE THAT" THAT IT EVOKED. WRITTEN BY A MOTORCYCLIST FOR MOTORCYCLISTS THIS BOOK GENERATES THE KIND OF ENTHUSIASM AND EXCITEMENT THAT IS ONLY REALLY UNDERSTOOD BY THE TWO-WHEELED SET. GOOD JOB BOB!

Wow! Talk about memories!

I first learned to ride motorcycles back in '79 starting out with a KZ250 and eventually graduating to an XS1100. Having ridden all over the US from coast ot coast, this book is like a trip down memory lane.

This book is a tribute to the spirit of every motorcyclist out there. His stories and anecdotes make me wish I still had a motorcycle. I really want to get out there and feel the wind against my skin as I cruise through the back woods of Missouri.

What I wasn't expecting was the technical information about the bike that explains some of the problems the bike had when it first came out. There was a very good explanation about how the bike was engineered, what few flaws there were with it and how to fix it. Pretty neat stuff.

This book is a definite buy if you're into motorcycling.

I found this book to be very informative (maybe a little upsetting for those who face Stage 4 - like my husband). It's straightforward, easy to understand, and divided into Stages very well. It covered everything we'd forgotten to ask the doctor when we were there!

Anyone whose life has been touched by kidney cancer needs to read this book. It is a thorough explanation of the disease, answers all the questions many doctors are too busy to explain completely, and you can read and re-read at your own pace. It covers the latest treatment options in this rapidly changing branch of oncology. The glossary and index and the illustrations are especially helpful. Interspersed throughout are real-life comments of patients and caretakers who have walked this path.

This book is excellent. Its format is vastly different from a thick textbook. Important points are highlighted. You can surf the index and read a Q and A. You can easily skip those Q&As that are not germane to your interests. The book is fact oriented with no longwinded technical discussions. One of the co-authors is a practicing neurologist which is not the norm for authors of such books (no offense to PhDs). I consider this book the most authoritative in ADHD literature. It's my best find this year. jw

A MUST-HAVE Resource for Parents and Educators

A must-have resource for parents and educators of children with ADHD.

I have been an educator for over ten years, and have been exposed to countless books and resources about ADHD. Most of them, I have found, either bore you with excessive neuropsychological jargon, shower you with unpractical strategies, or both. I have yet to read a book about ADHD that I would recommend to parents and colleagues. Until now, that is!

I was delighted to read "100 Questions & Answers About Your Child's Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder." Dr. Nass and Dr. Leventhal have penned an informative, well-written book that is both comprehensive and concise. The format is extremely reader-friendly, and makes it possible, with a straightforward table of contents and complete index, to return to the book for a quick reference. The authors left no stone unturned in their efforts to produce a thoroughly researched, carefully presented resource that is replete with current findings and practical (yes, practical!) strategies to help children with ADHD improve their academic performance. I was particularly impressed with the "Medication and ADHD" section; Dr. Nass and Dr. Leventhal provide more than enough information to help parents make informed decisions about ADHD medications.

I HIGHLY recommend this book! My grade: 100 percent for "100 Questions and Answers About Your Child's ADHD."

THE 1940'S RADIO HOUR begins with a behind the scenes look at a small time radio variety show prior to going on the air. About a third of the way into the play, the cast get together to actually perform their one hour radio show. At this point in the play, the audience "becomes" the studio audience for WOV and what follows is an example of the radio shows that were so popular in the late 1930s and throughout the 1940s. This play is kind of unique and provides a great experience for actors, techies, and directors. The cast is truly an ensemble and there isn't a small role. So sit back and relax and enjoy a trip back through time to the good old days of yesteryear.

A fun filled adventure into big band via the WOV cast

The 1940's Radio Hour is a wonderful oppurtunity for any theatre organization to showcase a wonderful ensemble of talent. The set requirements are as flexible as your budget. The music sells itself. If by some misfortune, people are not familiar with the title of the show, then list all of the songs which are in the show on your poster and you are bound to have a string of sell out standing room only performances. This show does not have one bad role in it. Each character one stage has one if not several moments to shine. The orchestra is a vital part of the show as they and the cast are onstage for this live radio broadcast on Dec. 24, 1942. If you love big band music, if you love torch songs, if you like beautiful harmonies THIS IS THE SHOW FOR YOU! I am in the process of of getting ready to direct it for the third time and can safely say that it is probably my favorite musical to direct. I will also tell you that this musical is full of magic and audience will love it, not only because of the moments created onstage, but because they get to participate by being the audience at this live radio broadcast. Do yourself and your community and your cast and crew a favor: direct this show now!!!!!!!

Sincerely,

Ed Heaberlin

This book is a must-have for any EMT or Paramedic. It is an easy read but does require a baseline knowledge. It is best used to review during or after your EMT training.
Pros: this book is tailored for all levels. Each topic has a basic level target and then is followed by a clearly marked "Advanced Life Support" section making it easy to get what you want out of the book based on your interest and education.
-Easy to read, not really a strict textbook format
-Excellent points in exam and development stage based approach
-2nd Ed. incorporates 2005 AHA guidelines
-Step by step and photographed procedure index for all skills
Cons: The only con I could find was a lack of some great points from the PALS textbook when compared.
The book alone is filled with pearls of pediatric care so if you cant make a course to get your certification, this book alone will improve your care!

Be safe

As prehospital professionals, we know several things about children; on average only 10% of our patients are pediatrics; we are aware of physiological differences based on age; we know how quickly they decompensate and pediatric calls make most of us very nervous. I read this book in conjunction with taking a 16 hour course on care for children by prehospital professionals; I found the information to be very helpful and know that my comfort level in the field when working with pediatric patients and their parents has been improved as a result. I highly suggest this book (and course) to all EMT's and 'medics.
