I really enjoyed reading your book of Holocaust Poetry. It touched my heart in many different ways. I felt the sorrows of the poets who displayed their poetry in your book. Some poets lost very close loved ones and showed their love and affection through their poetry. I think that it is very important that we know about the Holocaust and how discrimination affected us and our ancestors. This book taught me that every life has it's own meaning and that we should treat other as we would like to be treated.

Shiff prefaces this book with a verse from Job 16:18: "Oh earth, cover not thou my blood, and let my cry have no resting place." This anthology gives voice to holocaust victims, it brings immediacy to the holocaust -- making it a current tragedy rather than a historical event. The poems are organized somewhat chronologically, in sections titled Alienation, Persecution, Destruction, Rescuers Bystanders & Perpetrators, Afterwards, Second Generation, Lessons, and God. A variety of writers are represented, from the famous (Elie Wiesel, Primo Levi, Sylvia Plath), to the less famous (Pavel Friedman, a child inmate of Theresienstadt camp). An appendix includes fascinating biographical sketches information on each author, which adds an extra dimension to the poetry. Much of the poetry is very readable, accessible, not as esoteric as I had expected. The overall effect is highly disturbing, yet it's inspiring that many of the writers are able to find God or meaning in such horror.

The Holocaust is undoubtedly the most horrific epoch of human violence mankind ever witnessed. Not much historical documentation was done about it because in the brutal act of murdering Six million Jews by the Nazi supportors almost an entire race got wiped out...the few that survived remained transfixed by the aftermath of that shattering experience of barbaric cruelity. The recorded facts were kept supressed for a long time. The Holocaust remained hidden like a Blackhole in the obscure labyrinths of history. Though we consider the Holocaust as a rudiment of the dead past,we still find the haunting echos even now.Just look back in retrospect even a short span of the bygone decade. There we find the demonic manifestations of the forgotten dead past! The list at random is alarming:ethnic strife in Rwanda,Cechnia,Croatians and Serbs,Jews and the Palestinens and above all Racial descrimination at different levels in almost all the continents. This is the price we pay for remaining oblivious to the lessons of the past. The dictum"Those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it" will hold true for ever.It is indeed our moral responsibility to at least remotely live through the pain and and agony...to empathise with the victims of the holocaust who suffered more by the deliberate acts of cruelity by their own fellow beings than by the stroke of fate.It will be a disdainful act if we choose to turn away from this imperious reality of the past! Hilda Schiff's compilation "Holocaust Poetry" addresses this fact with such immediacy of purpose. This is a very insightful compilation because Hilda Schiff has chosen to include as many variety of poems from different perspectives of the same reality than presenting a chosen few poets at length. This offers a panaromic insight into the holocaust in its entiriety! The poems compiled are arranged in an order that gives a graphical account of the plight of the victims.Nothing else could be a better example of Man's innate urge to destroy and above all Man's indomitable will to overcome..to eventually triumph against all odds. These poems give that rare insight into the complexity of the strange human predicament as well! Well, when striken stricken to the heart the Lion gives out his mightiest roar, smitten on the head the cobra rises it's hood...and the glory of the Self comes forth when a man is wounded to the depths! These verbal expressions form only a fractional account of the unsung saga of the holocaust victims, but they stand as the living testimony of a statement by the Greek writer Nikos Kazantzakis" Man's wings won't sprout until he reaches the brink of an abyss!"

I've ready many outdoor books and have read all the great writers from yesteryear as well. I have to say that this is one of my favorites. I appreciate the sense of humor along with the down to earth and rather frank wording that Mr. Jones uses throughout this book. The range of topics covered is a good one, especially considering the adult content in a couple of the stories, which honestly was unexpected but quite funny as well. Great read.

Robert F. Jones brings an illumination to the sport of hunting that is often missing from other writers. There is an insight, a special gift that Jones has that brings us to the hunt wide eyed and ready. He speaks of favorite dogs without being soppy and sentimental. He makes passages glisten with newness even though the scene is lived out daily during the hnting season. If you are a dog lover, a hunter, or someone intereste din good writing, Jones is the man for you.

My wife gave me this book for Christmas. She told me that I was the hunter of her heart! Well enough with the sappy stuff, on with the review. I recently went on vacation and took the book along for a read at the beach. I read the book in two days! It was one of those books that was hard to put down. On my flight back to the states, I began to read some of the stories again, and was just as intrigued during the first read. Mr. Jones talks about hunting in with his Lab and a Jack Russell (definite twist). That would have been a pair to see in the field, a Jack Russell pointing and a Lab flushing!?!?!?! Mr. Jones has the ability to make you feel like you are right there with him. Not many authors have that ability. If you have a true passion for good hunting and great dogs, this book is it. Now that I am back to reality (cold, snowy weather), I have picked up the book sevral more times and began to read the book from cover to cover again, while I am waiting for my most recent Amazon order of bird hunting books. Spend the money and take the time to read this great book. It wont disapoint you.

The most important reading of my life, no more psychologists for me! After 20 years of doing therapies on and off; The author touches the core issues that are keeping us from living in synergy with ourselves and in our relationships. With the tools that are presented in this book, I have discovered what it means to be responsible for my emotions, I have learned how to contain and process those emotions. I have learn to express myself from a calm and centered place and to discern the facts from the judgements. If you think that your relationship is all that it can't be right now and/or you have settle for mediocrity or just an OK one, if you have lost all hopes of ever seeing it transformed, buy this book right now; it will transform yourself, your family dynamic and above all, your relationship. This book is easy to read, the chapters are extremely well organized and you can start using the tools right away and notice transformation of how you communicate and interact with your partner. I wouldn't be surprised that Danyelle Beaudry Jones and her husband Ron, are the next Oprah's favorite relationship experts! Suzanne Perrault, Kansas City

Ron Rapoport is a gifted and entertaining writer. His thorough research and effort to provide a detailed background in each chapter adds depth and interest that would be missing from a more straightforward sports story--without diminishing the excitement of the sports story itself. You will learn much about not only Bobby Jones and his life but also other golfers, Atlanta and other cities, England and Scotland, and American history as well. I thought this was a wonderful book and recommend it highly.

Having heard about Bobby Jones since I started playing golf at age thirteen, and having attended many Masters tournaments, I was drawn quite naturally to this book.

Rapoport serves as a keen biographer. While he praises Jones as the most gifted golfer of his era, he doesn't avoid including passages that show Bobby's warts. The book details Bobby's early temper tantrums, his longstanding feud with another leading amateur golfer, and how he missed opportunities to use his fame and good name to pave the way for racial transition in golf and in the Atlanta area.

Even so, Jones comes across very positively in the way he handled his crippling illness that drove him from the game so early. In my judgment, his most heroic deeds happened when he clutched a wheelchair instead of a golf club.

From the sporting angle, golfers will welcome the shot-by-shot replay of Bobby's most heralded victories. Also, the behind the scenes story of the Bobby Jones/Clifford Roberts relationship uncovers events known to only a few at the time.

If you've never encountered Bobby Jones in print, this is a great place to start.

Reasons to focus on natural childbirth!

Finally someone dares to declare that having a medicalized birth is not the norm, just as bottlefeeding isn't the norm... I'm a family physician with a breastfeeding clinic since 1996, and I had begun noticing notable differences in the types of lactation problems between the midwife-assisted births and the gynecologist-assisted ones. Unfortunately, women are not aware of this and they themselves request epidurals for pain-free births. Little do they know that they are harvesting a multitude of related post-partum & breastfeeding problems, for themselves AND baby. Once this is explained to them, they often realise the connections and wish they had known... This is a book every practitioner doing deliveries should read. We really ought to assist laboring women with non-pharmacological pain-relieving techniques, not just medications.

A wonderful book

This is not a book you'll curl up with in one afternoon. The writing is a bit technical and dry, so it's better read in increments.

BUT... if you want to re-examine what you know about childbirth and breastfeeding, this book is rock solid. The book is straight-forward and factual. It will give you food for thought that you will digest over a long period.

This book will affect you as a practitioner. I highly recommend it.

An object lesson in how to cut to the chase; an example of tiny bites of beautiful writing; the art of the flash essay. By whatever name you call it, In Brief is proof that a piece of writing sometimes needn't be more than a paragraph or two in length to move readers and give them something profound, funny, enlightening, or beautiful to take away with them. This refreshing collection of teensy personal essays is a real winner.

This is a great book if you like to read but you never feel you have the time. These stories can each be read in a matter of minutes. This was a textbook for my creative non-fiction class and I think there are some great examples of the creative non-fiction format. The only downside I would say is that most of the stories are of a serious nature, so while the stories are short, I wouldn't call it 'light' reading.

A Review of In Brief: Short Takes on the Personal

Review Date: 2000-05-21
I find this book an excellent companion to Kitchen's and Jones' first book on the creative nonfiction "short" entitled, In Short: A Collection of Brief Creative Nonfiction. The evolution of creative nonfiction and the "short" is apparent in these pages. No longer is it mandatory that a literary journalist or creative nonfiction writer "immerse" the reader in a person, place or thing. These pieces of creative nonfiction show that writers can make a simple journal entry, letter, or, for that fact, an email, stand on its own -- that even the smallest episode in our lives, or simple everyday pictures we've taken with our mind's eye, can have "symbolic realities." As a person who reads and writes prose and poetry, I find the brevity, and yet complexity, of the works appealing. Mary Oliver, who I've enjoyed as a poet, turns a poetic list of items she finds at the beach into a prose piece on beauty and existence. Kimberly Gorall turns a brief childhood conversation with her mother into a statement about womanhood. William Heyen uses one simple paragraph explaining the habits of an insect to an analogy on creativity and imagination. A bright high school senior, Janice Best (editor of Elan), uses an ingenius email format to try to explain why she writes. All of these "shorts" have a similar element -- they start with detail -- an intense focus -- and they end making a statement about our human existence. I have been liberated by the form presented in these pages -- and plan to teach college students using this book as a reader. But I believe any one who enjoys learning about the 'human condition' will enjoy this book. It's a quick read, but the impact of the material here lasts a long time.

I understand that this book is now out of print - but if you are lucky enough to get your hands on this book - you're blessed. In my opinion it is the best book on the life of Evan Roberts. So many books only tell half the story, but the author of this book has done an incredible job of telling the REST of Evan Roberts' story. IT didn't end with the revival.
It will also make your heart burn - may God raise up others in Wales such as Evan Roberts who will catalyse a move of God such as Wales saw at the turn of the last century!

The Welsh Revival of 1904 is one of the most fascinating of the many experienced in Wales. Evan Roberts is a challenge to the modern pulpiteer in that he was not as well educated or experienced, but he was simply a man whose heart was ablaze for CHRIST. Mr. Jones did a superb job on the entire life of this unique man. I recommend it for it imparts vision and also warning of the enemy's tactics to destroy revival and the ones whom GOD uses. He showed the changes in Evan's life and heart that transpired through the years, yet he clearly showed us that Evan's heart never stopped beating for heaven sent revival!

For nine months - between November 1904 and August 1905 - God anointed and used a twenty-six-year-old coal miner named Evan Roberts to channel a stunning revival movement of the Holy Spirit that has profoundly influenced the course of the Church both in Wales and the world. Few, however, know that Evan Roberts subsequently suffered a breakdown and withdrew to a solitary ministry of prayer before he later was once again called.

Generations later, the questions persist: What motivated Evan Roberts? What was his family background like and how was he prepared for his mission? Did he ever marry? Did he go on to pastor, become a missonary, or a writer? After the revival, did he in fact backslide or lose his mind altogether?

This book answers these and even more vital questions that reveal the anatomy of a genuine, earth-shaking revival - and the demands it places on its human conduits.

HOWARD'S BOXING STORIES

Even I, a REH fan, was wondering how a boxing yarn could be any good. I was expecting just a bunch of in-ring action with the only differences from story to story being the fighters and who won. Far from it. This book starts off with an essay entitled Men of Iron, where Howard asks the question: "What freak of nature makes an iron man?" I personally didn't find the essay all that interesting==but the rest of the book makes up for that. The first story is The Iron Man. In my opinion, it's the best in the book. While I read it, I couldn't help but think of the B and W movie Champion with Kirk Douglas. Iron Man has got one whopper of a storyline. Next up is They Always Come Back. This is the second story in the book, and the second best. There's a few nice twists in this story, though. Finally, there's Fists of the Desert. After reading that story, I really felt like I'd been punched in the stomach. That one is the third best of the bunch. This is a hard book to find--even in paparback--but if you see it, pick it up--you won't be disappointed.

This is a must for all Howard fans, especially the newer ones who may have only read his sword & sorcery stories.Iron Man is about boxing pure and simple;the men who took untold punishment in the ring before usually winning their bouts by knocking out their fatigued opponents.Howard wrote this using some of his personal experiences following the fight game in Texas and has based some of his later and well known characters like Conan and Kull on the fighters in this book. They all share the same characteristics of toughness, incredible vitality and endurance.Iron Man is a good guide to how Howard thought and how he shaped his future characters

Real Men. Giant Men. Iron Men!

Review Date: 2002-03-07
Robert E. Howard was great fan of the ring. He loved the action and the shear power of the men who fought between the ropes. This respect for manly strength shows in every story he wrote, from his westerns right up to his most famous creation, Conan. Here in this book he writes about the real thing. These are men here. Real men! Howard was a life time fan of boxing and these stories are based on men he actually watched trading blows in the ring. If you think these men are larger than life, think again. For each fictional character found in this book there was a real man behind the character. Real men lived the lives presented here. While it is true that these are fictitious accounts it is also true that boxing really was once like this. It was brutal. It was bloody. It was all about fighting. The boxers of today, with their polish and their fancy footwork would not have had a chance in the boxing ring of old. Only an iron man could get through a match in those days. An iron man was a man who didn't duck and dodge but, rather, took each blow to come his way and never faltered. An iron man could take any amount of punishment and still win the fight. An iron man was the toughest of the tough. In this book you will find four such men. These are the men who inspired the great barbarian, Conan. Read this book and enjoy, but beware. No matter how tough you think you are you will feel weak and helpless compared to the giants found in these pages. This is Howard at his best. This is Howard writing about that which he loved most. This is The Iron Man!
