This is a fabulous book. I wanted to say that so my only nit-pik can be taken in proper context. How, I repeat HOW, can the Watkins Glen circuit in upstate New York have possibly been left out of this book? It's probably because I attended the Grand Prix several times in the late 60's, that I am flabbergasted by this omission. Other than that glaring omission, I loved the book.

This one is a "no-brainer," for me. If you love auto racing, this book is a MUST HAVE! It doesn't matter what kind of racing circuit you enjoy: NASCAR, Formula One, IRL, CART, it doesn't matter. This book shows the tracks, detailed descriptions of each turn, including highlights of famous races on each course. For circuits that have changed over the years, it even shows the evolution of the changes. With stunning color photos of famous drivers, famous racing moments, and several track perspectives, and even the famous 14 mile Nurburgring circuit from days gone by. This is a book all racing fans should have sitting close by to refer to at a moment's notice.

NOTE: (added 5/19/02) The book only goes up to the 1999 season, so it will not reflect the changes made to Hockenheim, Germany's circuit in the 2002 season. This is a MUST HAVE book if you have an interest in remembering the older, longer Hockenheimring that is now a thing of the past.

Excellent Book. As well as giving in depth, but easy to read descriptions of each Grand Prix circuit, many tracks from around the world are included such as Indianapolis, Surfers Paradise and many more. All circuits have the track layout with the speed, G-force and the gear selected on each corner and straight. On some of the tracks there are driver profiles and a description of a great race on the circuit. There are rally good pictures too. A lot of great information and pictures are packed into this book. Great for a novice but it also offers something for the expert.

Georgia Jones has put together a writer's guide that mixes humor, guidelines, exercises and examples of real writing. This is all done in a way that gently draws the aspiring author into the process of writing. The book guides us through the elements of fiction including character, place, dialog and plot but each of these is brought to life in a way that makes one eager to start writing.

For example, as I read the section on development of a character for fiction, my first thought was that it is far more complicated than I expected. Yet, at the same time I felt that it would be truly fascinating to work with character in this way.

It's not so much that Georgia Jones makes writing look easy, but that it would be well worth the time and effort to build the skills that she guides us through. She shows us that writing is not so much a mystery as a challenge. She begins the book talking about how we write what we know. In the end we realize that we know far more than we ever imagined.

While Henty is a good read it is definitely a kids book. Do not expect much depth to the story. The story is quick, exciting, and predictable. Fun and accurate but not too involved. A good book if you know what to expect.

I received this book to read as a school assignment. After I read the first ten pages, I thought it was going to be pretty boring. I mean, how interesting is a book about getting in a quarrel about tripping over someone's feet. I wondered how Henty managed to write a book that goes on for 360 pages with really small print that kept going on like that. Then, I decided to read a little more. The second chapter wasn't quite as bad so I read a little more, until it got so interesting I didn't want to stop!

G. A. Henty wrote a scores of historical fiction stories about the Middle Ages and other time periods, including Ancient Civilizations, the Renaissance, and even journeys to the new world. At the turn of the century, he was a renowned author, especially among high-school boys. I am surprised that he has been almost completely forgotten today. Henty is a marvelous author who wrote exciting, historically accurate, action-adventure books.

Wulf is a Saxon thane who is under the command of Earl Harold of Wessex. He is always by Harold's side, ready for adventure with his right-hand man Osgod and his best friend Beorn. They fight the Welsh, the Bretons, Vikings, and finally the Normans under the command of the Duke of Normandy, a.k.a. William the Conqueror at the final conflict at Hastings.

If all Henty's books are like this one, I'm going to ask my parents to order the whole set! The only downside to investing your time in this book is the beginning is a little slow. But after that, It's Great! I can't wait to read the next one.

My son was given this book on tape as a gift. It ended up being a gift for the entire family. Henty writes very good and interesting historical fiction that has wide appeal. Although most of his books focus on young men in history, my daughter also found the story of Wulf very interesting and entertaining.

When I discovered this book many years ago as a teenager searching for wisdom and equanimity, this book, which I borrowed from a library, helped me learn some crucial lessons. The biggest lesson was as the title of the book says "You are not the target". So much of what other people do and say to us has nothing to do with us at all really. We need to turn around that accusing finger to point right back to the one who says "You...". It often speaks about him, her or them, not us.

I never forgot this book and finally bought myself a copy from this site. I treasure it like an old friend.

Book Description
Gerald Durrell meets James Herriot. Oliver Graham-Jones recalls his time as the chief vet at London Zoo, and some of the extraordinary animals he met along the way.

Synopsis
In 1951 Oliver Graham Jones was appointed Curator of mammals at London Zoo, becoming Senior Veterinary Officer in 1960, a post he held until his retirement in 1969. This is a collection of tales from his days at the zoo during the 1950s and 1960s.

From the Back Cover
One Puff Adder One antelope One crocodile

This was the list of sick animals presented to Oliver Graham-Jones on his first day as veterinary officer at London Zoo.

It was 1951, and the care of wild animals in zoos was in its infancy. Previously, sick animals had been placed in the hands of their keepers and kept from public view. But Oliver Graham-Jones was to change all this. A pioneer of many of the techniques now used by vets around the worl, he was instrumental in building the first animal hospital and moving London Zoo away from its Victorian past into the high-tech world of modern vetinary medicine.

If a dangerous animal escaped or required urgent medical attention, Oliver was always on hand ready for any eventuality. In Zoo Tails, he tells us about some of the extraordinary animals he looked after: how he anaesthetized, and was chased by, a gorilla; captured an angry polar bear in thick fog; performed a colostomy on a python; and fitted a raven in the Tower of London with a wooden leg.

Filled with wonderfully funny stories, told with delightfully self-deprecating humour, this is a book that will appeal to lovers of animals great and small.

"Zoo Tails"' will raise many a smile and, along the way, a greater appreciation of what it is to play doctor to the most exotic collection of patients in the world.' Desmond Morris

This book is great and it gives you a warm feeling of humanity, expoloring insights into the world of a zoo vet. It is both funny, sad, and 100% real life. Oliver Graham-Jones was the first vet to work at the well known London Zoo in the 1950's. It was a time of great change and developments in anamial welfare. During his time at London zoo he helped stop TB, developed the dart gun, and many surgical procedures that has lead to many procedures undertaken by Doctors today. They including hip implants, heart impants, etc. The book is made up of 26 individual stories that make a larger whole, which makes it ideal for a train, bedtime or bathtime reads. It is available (at Amazon)in soft and hard back and on audio tape and it was number ten in the best sellers lists last year in the UK. It will make an ideal present for all ages and backgrounds.
The forwords were from Dr Desmond Morris and Sir Patrick Moore, who are Olivers great friends. If you have any comments on the book please leave your message,

At last, a book about HIV that's tells me what I want to know, that's written by a gay guy, and that's fun to read and doesn't drag me down. I've been a regular user of Dr. G's web forum for years. It's nice to read him now, with his amusing and irreverent style, in book form (where he can concentrate on education rather than just placating or pissing off the crazies). If you've just found out you're positive, then this is the book you should read first. But I learned a lot, too, and I consider myself pretty educated on the subject. Everyone with HIV infection should read this book...and lots of other people should, too.

If it were not so unsparing, I would call this a really fun book. It covers the world and all of recorded history. There are many good books on US women's history but few that are willing to take on the world. Most of my favorite historic women are in here and many that I hadn't heard of before.

The 1,001 things are divided into 10 sections: government, law and politics; religion and humanitarianism; education and academia; science, medicine and technology; economics, work and business; daily life; literature and journalism; arts and entertainment; sports and adventure; and , wild women.

Most of the unsparing parts are in the section on daily life, including a subsection on violence against women. I don't recommend it for young people unless you're willing to discuss ...

Nonetheless, I enjoyed reading it and would recommend it for mature readers who would like a more global (or less ethno-centric) view of women's history. In addition to the names and achievements of many women, it has such things as a list of over 40 countries and the year that each extended the vote to women (no, the United States was far from the first) and a short list of women saints and what they were patrons of.

Review Date: 2006-03-25
This is a wonderful book that condenses 1001 things about women's history into brief segments that are easy to read and easy to remember. I have a minor in Women's Studies, so I thought I knew more about women's history than almost anyone, but Constance Jones has revealed so many things that I had never heard of that I'm amazed I never discovered some of them in my reading and research. For instance, there are ten segments described in the section about "Soldiers." Of course we all know about the women who served in WWII, Vietnam, and the Persian Gulf, but I doubt that many of us knew about Dr. Mary Edwards who served as a Union Army Nurse and Surgeon during the Civil War and was the first woman to receive the U.S. Medal of Honor. Something else that I didn't know about her was that the medal was rescinded in 1917, then reinstated in 1977. Wisely, Jones has left out the better-known women soldiers, such as Joan of Arc, since the purpose is to share the historical facts of which we are probably unaware.

From "Government, Law, and Politics" to "Religion and Humanitarianism" to "Education and Academia" to "Science, Medicine, and Technology" to "Economics, Work, and Business" to "Daily Life" to "Literature and Journalism" to "Arts and Entertainment" to "Sports and Adventure" to "Wild Women," Jones gives us a concise, articulate account of women, organizations, myths, and movements that everyone should know about in order to make our knowledge of history truly accurate and complete.

1001 Things Everyone Should Know About Women in History is a great introdution to the importance women have played in history and the variety of their contributions.

The chapters of the book give you some idea of the richness of women's history, as women in education, science, medicine, religion, sports, entertainment and politics are discussed. It is very comprehensive, and looks at women across time and around the world. A fun - and fascinating - read.

He gives you plenty more than just stale ideas to think about. I personally use his time management system, because he was the first person to show me the real value of having one that actually works. Sharing several of the ideas in this book with the clients I coach has helped my clients reach specific goals much faster.

I bought this in a used bookstore for [$$] in 1997, and have made it part of my daily routine ever since. I started using this after having used the one-year bible and one year new testament for several years each, and wanted something that didn't cut off passages in midstream....I especially wanted more of the Psalms, since the prayers of others are a wonderful way to hear God's voice speaking to your own life.

The bonus was, I found some wonderful passages in Proverbs that seem to be written just for me.

Each day, you read 5 Psalms, and a chapter of Proverbs. This isn't a substitute for studying the rest of scripture, but is a wonderful devotional habit I plan to continue for the rest of my life.

This is a wonderful way to fulfill the need to read a steady diet of God's Word. It allows you to read selected Psalms and Proverbs once every day. It is nicely broken up so that you can turn back and read it over and over without feeling you are missing any part of devotional and yet is not so much that you cannot read and enjoy His Word with only a few minutes a day.
