Awesome Book. Beyond words

As J.I. Packer put it in the forword, no other book today deals with Revival to this depth. MLJ's language is very deep yet simple enough for any true believer to grasp.

I was greatly inspired by this book to diligently pray for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit, in a time where Christianity is defined by music, style, large congregations and buildings. Inspite of all the 'cool' things people do today in churches to attract crowds, there is no life in the worship. To a large extent, churches are spiritually dead today.

The Bridgegroom(Christ) has gone far away from his bride(the church), and our prayer to Him should be to have mercy on her, visit her, cleanse her, revive her and rejoice in her.

MLJ's exposition of this verse was a delight to me.
Isaiah 62:6-7
You who call on the LORD,
give yourselves no rest,
and give him no rest till he establishes Jerusalem
and makes her the praise of the earth.

Praise God for pastors such as MLJ.

Great Book - It will revive your spirit.

It touches my heart. I think all the Christians should think about this topic and work up with it. The auther used simple verses of Bible and described problems of churches. Most important thing, he figured out the step we can follow and the concept we should keep in mind.

Lloyd-Jones preached this series of sermons in 1957-58 to celebrate the centennial anniversary of the great revival of 1858. He leads us through many texts of the Bible, explains the context of each verse, and the relevance of each verse to true revival. The first half of the book is dedicated to the habits of man that hinder revival, as was the masterful method of the Doctor.

Once these hindrances are addressed, MLJ gets into what happens in a revival and from that point on, you feel that you must experience these outpourings of the Holy Spirit that the Doctor describes. His amazing expositions of Scripture inspire you to look for other texts in the Bible that represent revival.

One unique teaching of MLJ is that God sends and ends revival on His own terms. Once again, he gives all the glory to God, whereas other teachers ONLY talk about what WE need to do for God to send revival. Lloyd-Jones differs from that teaching by explaining that God is sovereign in all things, ESPECIALLY when and where, and for how long, He chooses to bless us with an overwhelming sense of His presence.

Based upon that fact, MLJ always comes back to the fact that we do not have to wait on a massive worldwide revival to experience the love and presence of God. The individual Christian can experience these things, if only we seek the Lord with all of our heart.

For an even better experience of the Doctor's preaching, order these sermons on CD from Soundword in the U.S. or the MLJ Recording Trust in the UK.

A good anthology for Traditional Craft

For those interested in 1734/Tubal Cain/ Robert Cochrane, and some of the traditional craft, this is a good anthology. The ideas are deeper than most of what you find printed in the Neo-pagan genre, although the text could have used better editing. It is refreshing to read a text that discusses one of our elders frankly in a respectful manner, but without hero worship. The ideas and practices in this book have merit on their own accord, regardless of the personalities who transmit them. I wish more occult books let the philosophy and praxis stand on its own and stopped tying it to the authority of the transmitter. There is no religion higher than Truth.

Worth every penny - why aren't there more books like this!

Anyone like me who has admiration for the ideas of Cochrane will appreciate this volume. I would buy this in tandem with the Robert Cochrane Letters (also published by Capall Bann), because the two together greatly expound many of his ideas.

When you read a book like this it really puts things into perspective regarding the quality of many works on witchcraft. Both Cochrane and Evan John Jones writings are inspired and of great interest to those looking for something a bit more meatier than the standard "cast the circle by visualising a blue light" material that makes up the bulk of most books on the market. The great tragedy, aside from Cochranes death, is that there is not more material of this ilk in print, but then one needs only look around at the market for books on this subject to find the reason why!

Really wonderful collection of essays on elements of major importance to Traditional Witchcraft. Although a smaller volume, this seems much more in-depth to me insofar as esoteric elements of the craft than Evan Jones's "Witchcraft: A Tradition Renewed" (which is also well worth finding, especially for practical ritual). Together with "The Robert Cochrane Letters" (some of which is a bit obscure to wade through), and much of the material coming out of Capall Bann Publishing, this will hopefully foment a renaissance in modern Witchcraft.

Beautiful glimpse into the world of the Traditional Witch! If you are "starved" for some "real food" and tired of a "cotton candy" diet of so-called witchcraft books, you may enjoy this! It is not a "how to" book, but more like reading the private diary of a Traditional Witch, as well as being filled with much wisdom. While no books can take the place of experiencing the Old Ones personally, this book does a nice little job of introducing one to the world of the Witch.
I have a great fondness for it and think every Witch who follows the Ways of Old should have a copy to call their own!
If only there were more like these...

Richness in symbolism

An expensive little book this is, but very valuable in the symbolism offered by another astrological master. For every degree of the zodiac, there is a special symbolic vision that goes with it, which Jones has enumerated for us. This can make the astrology chart become alive with visual imagery and richer yet in symbolism. Better than a tarot deck, and deeper! By one of the masters.

... for a 1st book on the subject, I would recommend this version. The author includes chapters on: "planets & character traits", "Rectification using Symbols", & info on using them for daily guidance (by using the Symbol for the sunrise degree). They can be used w/ Horary charts as well. If you've no book on the Sabian Symbols, definitely try this one.

Astrology and Oracle in one book!

Review Date: 2001-01-22
Astrology is an area of spirituality that has been distorted by popular use. However, this book opens new possibilities for astrology both as a traditional predictive tool, and as a means of personality integration. The book has 1000 horoscope examples of real people, and some well-considered theory mundane and Horary Astrology, of which the last of these is original. Most importantly, this book presents the Sabian Symbols. To my knowledge this was the first publication of the symbols, yet many books have published them since.

What are the Sabian Symbols? Well, each of the 360 degrees of the zodiac is assigned a "symbol", such as for example "Taurus 22 - White dove over troubled waters". Then, this symbol is given a positive and a negative slant in a paragraph of text, as well as a keyword, in this case Taurus 22 degrees is "Guidance". The symbols add value to any horoscope, but there's more!

The symbols in this book are excellent and practical as a kind of modern day "I Ching". That is, you can ask a question (of your higher self), then select a symbol using a random selection to find out your answer. A good way to do this is for example, to have two stacks of normal playing cards. For the stack to select the zodiac sign use:- Aries - King of Hearts; Taurus - Queen of Hearts; Gemini - Jack of Hearts; Cancer - King of Diamonds; Leo - Queen of Diamonds; Virgo - Jack of Diamonds; Libra - King of Spades; Scorpio - Queen of Spades; Sagittarius - Jack of Spades; Capricorn - King of Clubs; Aquarius - Queen of Clubs; Pisces - Jack of Clubs.

Then, for the selection of the degree of that sign, use: hearts 1-10 for 1 to 10 degrees, diamonds 1-10 for 11 to 20 degrees, hearts 1-10 for 21 to 30 degrees.

So, for example, Taurus 22 degrees using this system would be denoted by "Queen of hearts" = Taurus, "2 of clubs" = 22 degrees.

I have used this book "off and on" over the past ten years together with the similar book by Dane Rudhyar. The latter I found had similar and complementary text descriptions for the symbols. In my opinion, the symbols have even more far-reaching possibilities. They can be used as a device to learn "clair-seeing" where the world we walk in can be interpreted prophetically by reading into the symbolisms noticed. This is a fascinating prospect but I've not seen any book working that way from the Sabian Symbols. The author Marc Edmund Jones spent 30 years on this one; a worthwhile endeavour as you can see from what I've said here.

I love Debbie Macombers angel books. You never know what they will get into next so you don't want to put the book down because you just have to know. In these stories there are the most unlikely couples and a lot of surprises. It always looks like nothing is going to work out for the angels but just wait until the last chapter.

This is the first book I have read from this author, but will look for more of the same. It was a well written, sweet, funny look at something we all need to believe in. I had just lost my husband and was flying home (first time on a plane). Picked this up in the airport and was immediately immersed in the story, so forgot to be nervous about my flight. It was something I could connect to in my fragil state so thank you Debbie Mcomber for some light at the end of my particular tunnel.

I thought the book was great, I rated it a 4.5 out of 5. Although I didn't feel the characters were fleshed out enough, the stories of Christmas "miracles of love" were heartwarming. A perfect read for this time of the season. And again, although I love books with more meat in them, more story, ets., I felt this was a great book to read.

The first of the two stories, "A Season of Angels" did great in introducing our angels, Shirley, Goodness and Mercy as they helped their charges realize the answers to their prayers before Christmas. Of the three stories (charges), two were more predictible than the third, which was a pleasant surprise.

The angels were back again in "Touched by Angels," again helping three lucky charges. I liked this 'book' alot better than the first, as the stories were a tad more realistic.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone. And apparently there are more books featuring these three angels. Guess I have to go find "The Trouble With Angels" and "Shirley Goodness and Mercy."

This book could be brilliant ...

I say "could be" because most of the book features the Comanches interacting with one another. It is possible the author captured them accurately, of course, he could be way off. Who knows? For the most part, I felt a sense of realism. But that's just my perception. It's a matter of taste. As far as the story goes, some parts drag and some parts were very exciting. But by the end though, I realized that this is just like real life.

One complaint is that Douglas neglects to explain how the white captive feels living among a people who killed her father, whose scalp she sees hanging from her captor's lance. And when her captor gives her away to his father later in the book, Jones once again neglects to explain how Chosen (the white captive) feels about this.

Despite this, by the end of the book, I felt that I had been on a journey with these people. Also, it should be noted that Jones is very fair to both cultures. The atrocities were a two-way street.

In closing, I highly recommend this book. I believe the follow up to this book is called Gone the Dreams and Dancing. I look forward to reading this book, too.

I knew for a long time that Douglas C. Jones was a well-liked author, as I worked in a public library and I shelved books for a living. One day, though, "Season of Yellow Leaf" happened to get into my hands, probably by someone else checking it out. I read the flyleaf and held onto it.

"Yellow Leaf" is the fictionalized story of a young girl in a remote Texas settlement who is captured by the Comanche tribespeople, adopted and named "Chosen." When "returned" to white culture as a married mother, she pines for the family she has been torn away from.

Loosely based on the story of Cynthia Ann Parker, it is a well-written story of the trials of the culture clash that has been going on for 500 years on this continent. The story is only repeated and repeated, families torn apart, then torn apart again.

Like so many tales involving native people, there is a "golden" time to Chosen's life, as there seems to have been to the lives of the tribes as well, that is to say, just before white culture influenced every circumstance.

I never read another book by this author, but I cherish this book for Chosen's viewpoint, albeit fictionalized.

I also do not know if this represents the Comanche viewpoint well, or is total supposition, but it's a very good read.

It would be hard to discuss one of Douglas C. Jones' books without mentioning the others. I have read all of his novels and found them to be well-researched, historically relevant and entertaining. Season of Yellow Leaf is one of my favorites, but Jones is at his best when writing about historical life in his native Arkansas (Weedy Rough, Winding Stair, others). I would recommend his books to anyone. He really knows how to bring history to life.

This book was written by Elizabeth McDavid Jones. I would give this book five stars. Secrets on 26th Street was a historical mystery. A historical mystery is a book about real things that happened in the past, but have included a mystery. It takes place in 1914 when the suffrage problem was going on. There is a secret that Bea is hiding from Susan O' Neal and her two sisters. Bea is a boarder, which is someone who pays someone to live with them and help pay the rent. Susan's mother disappears and Susan decides that the disappearance of her mother has something to do with Bea's secret. To find out more read Secrets on 26th Street. I think you will like it!

This is another very good entry in the "history mystery" series. I've seen it called the best one, although my daughter didn't like it quite as much as "The Smuggler's Treasure" or "Shadows In The Glasshouse". She connected emotionally with Susan, the 11-year-old girl who is the main character, and with the other people in the story. Much of the plot, however, is connected with the women's suffrage movement, which is perhaps a bit difficult for a 21st century ten-year-old to relate to.

"Secrets On 26th Street" takes place in New York in 1914. Susan's widowed mother takes a boarder into their small apartment to help pay the rent. It soon becomes apparent to Susan that there is more to Bea than meets the eye. When Susan's mother mysteriously disappears, Susan is convinced that Bea knows more than she is telling.

This is another good story for young girls. It has an good plot and engaging characters. Informative historical background information is woven in, as well. The historical information is dwelt on a bit too much in this particular book, but overall it is another solid entry in an excellent series. Recommended highly to kids and their parents.

If you have read other Sidetracked Home Executive Books- you won't find repetition, this was written to follow their first book, and does so beautifully. It is filled with the wit and charm we've come to expect from Peggy and Pam and plenty of down home wisdom and good ideas.

Highly recommended for the side tracked- overwhelmed-- wonderful creative woman who yearns for simplicity and success!

Small Business Savvy is the most comprehensive book I've ever read on building a business, and the best book I've ever seen on clearing the distinct hurdles a woman-owned business presents.

Rist and Jones take turns exploring the start-up, marketing, pricing, and myriad in-between issues women owners face. Their ability to draw from those who've gone before is key. Not only do you soak up their considerable insights, but you get practical, illuminating anecdotal illustrations of hundreds of women whose successes and struggles are described as a learning tool. You get real, solid action plans instead of vague principles. With the first chapter you know what works and what does not, from real women business owners who've been there and from the authors' knowledgeable advice.

This book is a must-read for any woman considering or already entrenched in owning a business -- men, too. The principles work (I've tried many of them!) and the advice is a business saver and grower. This booke enables me to confirm places in my own business model where I have made right and wrong decisions...and receive direct methods for correcting the wrong ones. Outstanding!!!!

The authors present all kinds of useful ideas that I can implement right now, from bartering for services to collecting money due, i.e.,the nuts and bolts of a business. Tact and sensitivity are strong characteristics of dealing with prople, and I can tell that the authors have had much experience and success in this area. "Common entrepreneurial mistakes" such as charging too little is easy for business women to fall into, since we are used to giving our all to our families; therefore we tend not to value our efforts as much as we should.

I really like this book and plan to give copies to friends as Christmas gifts.

I enjoyed the relationships of the sisters and the overall feeling of this story. I found it well written and very easy reading. It is just the kind of thing I'd recommend to someone for curling up on a rainy day to read. The story about Nic and her handicapped child had some tender moments and Nic's family members provided humor. This was a nice balance. I would have liked it to go deeper into the mother and child relationship, though. At times it did seem heavy on the Christian message but since the hero, Sam, was a preacher and Nic had an out of wedlock child it did not seem out of place. Some Christian books I've read use a past sin as the reason a character can't move on. They are constantly haunted by a single mistake which becomes the lynchpin of their lives. Nic was the opposite. She refused to dwell on her past. She was an admirable character in a story I will recommend to friends.

One of Annie Jones' best!

The Snowbirds is a beautiful, touching story written in Annie Jones' unique humorous way. Nic and Sam come across as real people facing life's struggles and mistakes with God's grace and guidance. Contrary to the PW review above, the faith element is not at all heavy-handed, but expressed perfectly. I laughed at the aunts' antics, shed a few tears as Nic seeks to do the right thing for her daughter, and cheered as Nic and Sam found each other and their love once again. It's a great story. I highly recommend it!

This excellent and well-researched book follows the history of Christian reflection on the human embryo. Focusing mostly on abortion, although also discussing some of the issues arising from IVF and embryo research, David Jones traces the history of thought about the status of the unborn through the Jewish tradition, Greek and Roman thought and Christian theology through the ages.

His wide-ranging research and masterful summaries of the various positions set out the groundwork for an understanding of the issues. His book shows that Christians have generally been fairly consistent in their outlook over the centuries but issues such as the "soul" and the moment at which an embryo becomes a human being are deeply complex and still very much under discussion.

An excellent resource for those interested in ethics and the theology and history around them.

Details abound in this book on beliefs of the human embryo.

This is a very detailed account of the status of a human embryo throughout history. It does a good job of giving a detailed account of different thinkers throughout the ages and their impact on the Christian view of a human embryo. Often I think it can be too detail oriented and does a rather rushed job on getting all the facts to mesh together. But overall I would consider this a good read for those looking to dig deeper into the Christian tradition of the fetus.

This valuable book is a much needed corrective to the seemingly endless and fruitless misconceptions about traditional Church teaching on the status of the embryo. By adopting a historical approach to the question of the moral status of early human life, Jones outlines, with cogent argumentation, the consistency and care with which the the Church has approached ethical problems at the beginning of life. As well as demolishing some misconceptions about past thought on the status of the embryo, Jones deepens our understanding of what questions are at stake when considering the nature of personhood. The book, by looking at these questions historically, philosophically and theologically, gives an object lesson in how to use different resources in a mutually enlightening way.

This well-written and engaging work should be required reading for all who are interested in seriously debating bioethical problems at the beginning of life.
