This book has a flow to it that continues where, the spider's egg, left off. It has a similar tone to it but with less aggression. With that being said, it still has a dark feel to it. It's almost psychotic and from what I've heard, a bit more personal. Everyone should check this out. It's a great book.

This guy really can write, man. I read his first book, the spider's egg, and thought "wow!" Then when I heard he was coming out with a new book, I checked it out and once again "wow" It's a little different, not too much but still deals with the basic messages this dude is expressing. I'm not all that much into poetry books but I really do like these. I can feel it, that why! Keep 'em comin', dude!

Delivers Again!!

Chris gets more personal in this book than he did in his previous. In "The Spider's Egg" he wrote beautifully about the inner demons he was dealing with and the truth hurts, reality of this world. This book is both similar and different mixed together. Sounds weird, right? Well, that's what you should come to expect from this writer. There are certain poems in this book that almost bring tears to your eyes because of the honesty they inflict about things alot of people, unfortunately, have been through and are still going through. From abuse, both physically and mentally of all kinds, to the struggles of keeping faith and hope. Chris, again, uses his words to connect to those who have not had the easiest of lives. It really is a great book and I hope you guys check it out and give it a chance. God bless you, Chris!

This is the best book on straw weaving I've found so far. It includes photos and drawings of every technique. I have had no trouble following any of the instructions. Each project contains a short piece of folklore that pertains to the piece. The pictures are so beautiful, it also makes a good coffee table book.

This book describes the history of America that we must not forget. It gives us a glimpse into the quality of life (or lack thereof) for freed blacks. The listing by states of blacks that were lynched is particulary touching. This is a must have for students of history.

This book portrays a different point of view on our history.

This is a good book to retain as a historical reference. It portrays a different point of view on our history. The writer must have done a lot of research to put this together. The section on lynchings, showing all those names, is unforgettable. This is a "must read" for all, especially history buffs.

Chances are every life, even that of social worker Sam, has something in its growing-up background that shouldn't have happened. This comes back to haunt him in a low-key, believable, sparely-written book that starts with a high school 25th reunion.

There are no cliché characters or predictable plot twists here as we follow the events that occur after high school friends reunite.

The author lulls you with details of Sam's rather mundane life, and then socks you with moments of high drama which are described vividly and skillfully.

Yes, you can put the book down, but you will jolly well pick it up again because you need to know how Sam fares and you certainly need to know who done it.

It is a pleasure to read a book where the telling of the tale never calls attention to itself. Such invisible writing is difficult to do although Weyman Jones makes it look easy.

All The Right Ingredients

Review Date: 2005-01-04
This tale of young friendship, threatened 25 years after an initiation rite goes tragically wrong, quickly becomes a humdinger of a mystery with all the right ingredients -- trust and perfidy, suspicion and accusation, supposition and logic, violence and murder, with clues strewn along the way which do nothing to spoil the surprise ending. Weyman Jones has strayed somewhat from his roots as the author of young-adult novels -- and has pulled it off. A great read.

I've read all three of Jones' books. They get better all the time. I found the characters credible, the pace kept moving, and a lot happened in not too many pages. I was surprised to find that I could imagine this on the stage as well as on the silver screen. It impresses me how completely Jones seems to command each of the different cultures in his stories--Indian, Treasure hunters, and LI suburbia with a social work slant. This was a good length for a mystery story--too many of them are too long these days.

In Suffolk County, New York twenty-five years ago, a high school junior Freddy fell from the fire escape of the Falcon Nest Hotel during a "club" initiation. Freddy remained in a coma for a few years as his family fell apart in their grief before Freddy finally died.

Over the years though she married and divorced one of them, Freddy's sister Angela suspects four people were involved in the incident though none of them were seemingly impacted by it as her family was. At a high school reunion she informs Michael, Sam, Jock and Hap that she is suing them in the wrongful death of her sibling. Stunned, social worker Sam is further dismayed when Michael's son Mike is caught in a stairwell with an underage client; instead of filing the report he allows history to repeat itself by hiding the truth. However, when someone murders Angela, Sam with the help of his girlfriend, concludes he must face up to his role in the tragedy confronting his three friends.

BROKEN GLASS is an intriguing crime thriller starring a beleaguered protagonist struggling with doing the right thing as for the second time in his life, loyalty to his friends comes in conflict with what he knows he needs to do. The terrific ensemble brings depth then and now, but the conscience and center of the tale is Sam. His dilemmas as a teen and as an adult make for a fine moral thriller, which asks when does one blows the whistle on a friend, family member, etc.

This is a real eye opener of a book if you are looking for an in depth retrospective of the artist's body of work! Burne-Jones is at last receiving his fair due of recognition as witnessed by the recent Met show in the Summer of 1998. This book showcases his many merits, including a unerring color and design technique applied to fantastical subjects. What makes the book so irresistible is the wealth of color plates accompanied by detailed explanations. It also helps that the authors were thoughtful enough to leave out any stuffy, academic narrative that overburdens this genre.

To visit the Burne-Jones exhibition at New York's Metropolitain Museum of Art is a thrill beyond describing. It is like being surrounded by old friends of the sort usually found in dreams. The stunning, fully illustrated catalogue that accompanies the show is perhaps the best catalogue I have seen, most notably for its impeccable and stimulating essays, and for its phenominal wealth of color reproductions. This book is a stunner, despite two or three flipped pictures( which I guess could happen to anyone in the rush to get such an involved publication ready in time!) I would advise all bookshops, libraries and Burne-Jones lovers to order this book now for its September release. It is sure to be the most valuable book on its subject for many years to come.

Tidy, easy intro to MMA and reintroduction to calculus
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-01
This is a rare example of a thin book about Mathematica, albeit specifically about the application of Mathematica to calculus.

I studied calculus in the 70's and could use some remedial help, and meanwhile am picking up more Mathematica skills. Mathematica would have been a big help back then, and this book would have been welcome too.

It is written to go along with another book, "Calculus: the Language of Change", which I don't have and don't think you need to enjoy this book. Though, I did think I had skipped a page when I first read the beginning line of Chapter 1, "In Chapter 1 of the text, you have begun to learn how to translate between two powerful languages, English and Calculus." This reads as though it's the workbook that gets packaged with a textbook, and maybe it actually is, for some. You really can use it on its own, though.

Calculus-specific material only makes up about half of this book, depending on exactly where you draw the line. There are also chapters about Mathematica basics, 2D plots, 3D plots, approximation, and series.

Section 2.3 begins, "Slope fields are another very useful way of picturing differential equations. In this section, we'll show you how to plot slope fields in Mathematica." They then spend a few pages creating fields of vectors that represent differential equations, and illustrating specific solutions to the equations that everywhere follow the flow of these vectors. This is news to me, and it's a VERY insightful way of seeing equations and solutions, and it's easy to follow and do and then apply on your own. I think I'd have paid the book price just to get these few pages, if I had known.

There is always room for improvement. Pretty early on, on p. 18, they assign an InterpolatingFunction to the name "solns" and then extract part of it, like this:

Yfunc[t_] = solns[[1,1,2]]

They then say, "What we are doing here is indexing into the list solns, picking out the function definition for Y(t), and then assigning this function to YFunc[t_]." I don't understand how we're supposed to know the structure of solns well enough to index three layers into it. Though, hunting around in bigger Mathematica books and the help system hasn't clarified it, either, and the other places that mention this say even less about "what we are doing here". So maybe it's just me. If they had said enough for the lightbulb to turn on in my head, I'd try to give the book 6 stars.

I first visited the Cape Verdes in 1987 while researching the ATLANTIC ISLANDS, a sailing guide covering the Azores, Madeira group, Canaries and Cape Verdes, now in its third edition. Getting information on the Cape Verdes in the English language was difficult in the extreme -- if only Aisling and Colum's excellent book had been available then! These days no sane person should visit the islands without reading it first. The Cape Verdes come as something of a culture shock after the Canaries -- this book will explain why, and help you get the most from the experience. Buy it!

Irwin and Wilson's guide gives you all the factual information you need, and in addition succeeds in capturing the spirit of Cape Verde, with boxes on cultural and historical issues linked to each island. There is no doubt about it: This is the best guide available. If you read German, Rolf Osang's "Kapverdische Inseln" from Dumont is nearly as good and a useful supplement (especially when it comes to photos). The chapters on Cape Verde in Rough Guides' and Lonely Planet's books on West Africa are neither up-to-date nor in-depth enough if you plan to spend more than a few days in Cape Verde (which you should!).

The appendix on Crioulo language in Irwin and Wilson's book is brief but good. Don't be put off by the nasty details on horrible diseases in the section on health!

If you plan on visiting the Islands of Cape Verde, this travel guide is essential. I have not found a better or more thorough guide. I currently live here but I am American and I knew nothing of the islands when I arrived. But after living here a while, I discovered that this book is as accurate as I initially thought. There are few things misspelled but that is to be overlooked by the amount of truely uselful and thorough the information is. I also liked the little touches of background and history on each island. It is very well done.

This book is one of those that you just find it hard to put down. When I recieved my copy it was so good I couldn't stop reading it. You just find yourself nodding your head and smiling as it seems like he has been in your home and mind putting down all your thoughts. There is just so much to relate to inside the pages. A couple of his poems became the catalyst of my own as they are thought provoking. No matter how many times I read the pages, I always find something new. Your Television set will be begging you to watch as this book pulls you in and the T.V gathers dust. Carrot on a Stick does cover everything and then some.

Carrot On A Stick is not just a rectangular object with pages of words. This book is an inspiration to all who read it. The cover of the books reads " A Book about everything, Well almost everything." I can tell you, Carrot On A Stick is what it says it is and so much more.

As soon as you begin to read you immediately find yourself connecting to the Author, Billy Jones. This is a man who has "been there done that" so to speak. You find yourself in his poems and your father in his short stories. He shares real life experiences, with brutal honesty. He gives you an inside look at his life from past to present, as well as a look into what your own future will hold. As you read you will find yourself lost in the magical rhythm of his words.

Laughter seems to be one of this authors best medications for the soul. He will leave you in stitches with poems like " Drunkards prayer" and " A Traffic Jam at Wal-Mart."

He also knows how to tug at your heart strings, and gets your mind rolling with short stories like, "One Mans Dreams" and "What Are You Scared Of?"

This book comes from the heart of a man, not at all unlike you and I. He has been down and out and back up again. He gives his readers inspiration through poems, verses, and short stories.

To sum up Carrot On A Stick, I would have to say, it will make you laugh, cry, hurt, get angry, and most of all teach you something about yourself.

I have read many books, but have never found one that has touched my heart, and opened my mind like Carrot On A Stick Has done.

When I met Billy Jones he told me this was the type of book that even people who don't like to read would like. I'm one of those people but I bought a copy cause he said he'd sign it and I thought it might be worth something someday besides I never met anyone who wrote a book before. I kept it around the house a few days and one rainy day when I couldn't go to work and didn't have enough money to go to the bar I picked it up and had a blast. Billy told me I would laugh and cry and he was right. If books had been like this in school I might not have quit. I think Billy has written a book everyone will like. Oh yea, I know the guy that did the cover art too, Mickey Sizemore.

I showed it to my wife and she loved it. I'm going to have to get me another copy though cause I lent my copy out and it never came back. Sorry Amazon but I'll see Billy at the bar sometime and get another signed copy.

Although it was read in conjunction with an urban history class, I found this book to be very engaging and moving. Rosenberg's writing flows easily through a very disturbing subject. He sets up very fluid parallels between the epidemic's appearance at all three major years: 1832, 1849, and 1866. Of special interest is the role of the NYC Metropolitan Board of Health in controlling and defeating the epidemic.. I hope I didn't ruin the ending for any interested readers: NYC is still a healthy city, despite outbreaks like the ones that Rosenberg identifies...

This book is truely a classic work of history. Although I also read it for a class (Medicine and Society in America), I recommend it to anyone with an interest in medicine, public health, religion, and general social history. In three parallel sections, the book relates the details of the 1832, 1849, and 1866 cholera epidemics. This structure results in some repetition but is needed to fully seen the connections/changes over time. It is extensively footnoted (I recommend you read these too - very interesting) and has a large bibliography... without seeming "overly academic." ENJOY.

Raising my children in Central America when the sixth world cholera pandemic reached the shores of this continent heightened my awareness as to existence of this mysterious disease. My children would bring home their cholera awareness materials from school that emphasized hand washing and clean water. Later on, I researched an incident in 1852 when Ulysses S. Grant and the U.S. 4th Infantry were devastated by cholera when passing through Panama on their way to California. However, it wasn?t until I read Rosenberg?s book that I understood how horrible a death from cholera was and yet how easy it is nowadays to treat. Rosenbery brings out so many interesting aspects of the impact of cholera on public health and the fact that the disease has only been known in the Western world for a little over 200 years. Most people think cholera is biblical. The book is an easy read for a layman and too bad it appears to be mostly used as a text book in college.
