Jui Ishida's montage-style illustrations reinforce this message: there's no beginning or end to any of them; the eye is drawn seamlessly from image to image. Page after page, the story unfolds. This author isn't in a hurry to tell his story. It's timeless and eternal. The feeling one gets from it is of promise and of peace.

If you are interested in incorporating a writing workshop into your kindergarten or first grade curriculum, this book will serve as an excellent starting point and guide. In addition to answering your questions, it provides nearly sixty mini-lessons as well as a year-long calendar which can serve as your framework.
In their introduction, Dierking and Jones write that "kindergartners-and emergent writers of any age-should be treated like genuine authors and taught in a manner that respects their abilities while empowering their advancements." This is not merely a flowery sentiment. The entire book flows from this belief.
In Section 1, the authors discuss in detail their framework for teaching a workshop. The three parts are: the mini-lesson (5-10 minutes), independent practice with conferencing (20-30 minutes), and sharing (5-10 minutes). Also included is a chapter on "Connecting to Parents." Here the reader will find sample parent letters, information about homework, and a discussion of student journals.
The "meat" of the book is found in Sections 2-5. Section 2 comprises operational mini-lessons. That is, direct instruction of skills related to the "management of classroom process, materials, and spaces." Section 3 concerns print awareness mini-lessons. Here readers are provided with lessons that address the mechanics of writing: punctuation, capital letters, temporary spelling, and such. In Section 4 the authors include twelve foundational mini-lessons: setting, character development, choosing a topic, etc. Section 5 is devoted to craft mini-lessons. Here the lessons focus on using transition words, active verbs, color words, compare and contrast, word choice, elaboration and so forth.
Appended are a literature list and a bibliography. The literature list contains the titles of children's books and suggestions as to which mini-lesson the book is good for modeling. would be good for modeling. The bibliography is a list of recommended professional literature. The choices are excellent and will provide the reader with a firm foundation concerning the workshop process.
Highly Recommended.

Confirmation that we have choices!Review Date: 2007-01-02
Each day we have a choice to either have a good day or a bad one. The decision is ours; it all depends on attitude. "A great attitude does much more than turn on the lights in our world; it seems to magically connect us to all sorts of serendipitous opportunities that were somehow absent before the change, Earl Nightengale."
Our attitudes are important; it's our "point of view." A "negative attitude can have a detrimental effect on your life." Children who grow up around people with negative attitudes grow up with low self-esteem. When a negative person has a problem or setback they blame themselves and dwell on it. They tend to give up.
We must examine ourselves and be honest about our attitude and viewpoints. Ms. Jones writes that we are continually "carrying on conversations with ourselves, interpreting situations, and casting judgments on people." When people are feeling negative they tend to have distorted thinking such as: exaggeration, disregard the positive, all or nothing thinking, personalize or blame, label or mislabel, or over-generalize.
Ms. Jones offers suggestions for helping the reader form a more positive attitude: "Use the present tense (I am), Keep your affirmations personal; Use I or your name, be positive, be specific, be realistic."
"Healthy Attitudes Smart Choices: Living the Life You Choose" is a much needed resource. Ms Jones has done an excellent job of presenting us with a way to change our attitudes thereby living a happier, healthier life. Having been raised in a negative home and having fought a negative attitude in myself for many years, I especially applaud her efforts. When I am positive I feel better. I'm not sick as often and people prefer to be around me when I'm positive. People tend to avoid people with negative attitudes. I have a choice; I can be positive and happy or negative and unhappy. I choose happy. The cover of this book is beautifully done. I highly recommend this book to everyone.
Techniques and strategies that anyone can use to lift themselves out of the doldrums Review Date: 2006-12-10
It is Really a Choice 4.5 starsReview Date: 2007-07-04
Healthy Attitudes, Smart Choices is divided into eight chapters that provide guidance and practical advice on topics ranging from expressing creativity to spirituality. I particularly enjoyed chapter four, `Embrace Your Creative Power' because it spoke to how we can all tap into that creative spirit within us and create something that never existed and only exists because of our own power. Also helpful was how Ms. Jones referenced the works of others to allow us to understand how well she had researched her topics. She did not simply write `a how I would do it were I you' book.
I recommend Healthy Attitudes, Smart Choices to anyone interested in a practical, self-help guide that provides simple, realistic steps to overcoming the negative with the positive.

Mistery in the Civil WarReview Date: 2003-10-20
While she is there she stumbles upon a soldier's button, which leads to an encounter with a deserter. The deserter threatens her and tries to kill her but she escapes. At the same time, someone has been stealing from her family's farm. She has to find out who the robber is.
My opinion on this book is that it is very well written mystery. If you stop at almost any chapter you will get suspense. My favorite part is when Cassie finds our what happende to her brother Jacob. This is one of the best books I've ever read.
Civil War SuspenseReview Date: 2001-05-02
This is one of the better books in the "history mystery" series. Out of the eight we've read, my daughter says she rates this one second only to "The Smuggler's Treasure". I'm not surprised. A threat of real danger is established early in this story, and the tension is maintained throughout most of the book. The reader is kept wondering what is going to happen next, and that makes for a fun and entertainig read. As with the other stories in the series, this one also has something to teach about the history of the time and provides good role models for young readers. It's a good book for kids, and I recommend it highly to both kids and their parents.

I highly recommend you to read this book.

An ecologists path to virologyReview Date: 2007-11-22

Entertaining Informative Introduction to World of VirusesReview Date: 2005-01-11
I have already recommended both to numerous friends. Not only should these books be read by any lay person interested in modern biology, infectious diseases, and immunology, but public health workers, high school teachers, undergraduate students and teachers should all find these books worth reading and using as references. I actually wrote to Dr. Sompayrac suggesting he follow up with a book on "How pathogenic bacteria work," and I can only hope that he does.
A review from a laymanReview Date: 2002-04-03
However, I was rescued by some of the best writing and the most logical presentation I have ever read. This is no small claim as I have published over 150 articles for high tech magazines covering some very detailed topics in computing. My hat is off to Sompayrac for communicating complex topics in a style that is both clear and entertaining.
Sompayrac organized his book in the very way I would want to study the subject. His opening chapters (which he calls "lectures") deal with the way viruses "think" and the three basic problems that all viruses must address in order to survive. Sompayrac's explanations bring home the mechanics of Darwinism that viruses face when invading our bodies or breading themselves in cross-species transplants.
Sompayrac then discusses how viruses enter our bodies (inhalation, orally, through birth and through sex) and why each path has its advantages for specific viruses. For each entry method, Sompayrac discusses three unique viruses and how they conquered the problems of replication, spreading and evasion of host defenses. Sompayrac finishes the book by discussing the tactics that modern medicine is employing or testing to combat viruses. The discussion of tactics and their usefulness or dangerousness in regard to HIV is most illuminating.
Unique to this work - and hopefully for Sompayrac's other books including a rumored book on cancer - is his light, almost playful style of writing that keeps the reader riveted to the discussion despite the occasional need to drill down into medical jargon. Despite being only a layman limited by a typical array of college biology electives, I read, understood and enjoyed the entire book. I walked away with new insights into the miracles of life - ours and those microscopic life forms that occasionally try to kill us.
Had I encountered this book in high school or college I suspect I would have changed my major from technical and business realms to medicine and virology. Sompayrac's insights show these worlds to be compelling, intricate and violent places where the very fate of mankind may lay.
From the author:Review Date: 2002-04-05
There are many books which employ viruses as tools to teach molecular and cellular biology. This makes sense. A lot of what we know about these subjects was learned by observing how viruses usurp the biochemical machinery of their host cells. However, these texts tend to treat viruses as bit players, focusing mainly on the cells they inhabit. Consequently, such a book can teach you a lot about cell biology, but it usually won't give you much insight into the "mind of the virus." In How Pathogenic Viruses Work, the virus occupies center stage, because my goal is to give you an overall picture of virus-host interactions from the point of view of the virus.
There are also big, heavy books that seem to contain every possible detail about every virus in the universe. These texts are great for reference, but they give the impression that viruses are incredibly complicated and almost impossible to understand. In fact, viruses are quite simple. They really only know how to solve three problems, and the diseases viral infections cause are the consequences -- frequently the unintended consequences -- of the different ways viruses solve these problems.
How Pathogenic Viruses Work is written in the form of "lectures," because I want to talk to you directly, just as if we were together in a classroom. In this book, I focus on the important concepts, and leave out as much detail as possible. I also limit my discussion to viruses that cause diseases in humans. Lord knows, there are plenty of them, and to me (and probably to you), these viruses are really the most interesting ones.
Your professor may use this book as the core text for a course, supplementing these lectures with fascinating facts about his or her favorite viruses. Alternatively, your professor may use this book as a course preview, both to provide you with a global view of how pathogenic viruses work, and to give you "pegs" on which to hang more detail as the course progresses.
But no matter how your professor may choose to use this book, you should keep one thing in mind: I didn't write this book for your professor. This book's for you!
