_Why'd I buy it?_
I've been looking for material to spruce up the religious aspect of my campaign. Clerics and Paladins seems to be rife with role playing opportunity and adventure hooks, and yet the material I've seen so far was lacking (like WotC: Defenders of the Faith). I was especially interested in the "Holy Warrior" new core class and in how a "complete description of each god's church" would look like. I was not disappointed...in fact, I was very pleasantly surprised.

_Overview_
This book can be used in many different ways: it's a complete patheon and mythology of gods, it's a "pick-and-choose" box of common gods plus detailed churches, and it's a "do-it-yerself" tool-kit for making the gods of your campaign world relevant to your players. It succeeds at all of these things...and if you think about it, that's pretty amazing.

The book prose is tight and entertaining. Rule changes are clearly spelled out, and are repeated where relevant. The game mechanics seem simple and balanced (although I've not yet play-tested it myself). (And a further note to all of those crunch-lovers out there, like me: There are game mechanics in here where there needs to be.) Overall, a very well written and insightful book.

_The Complete Pantheon and Mythology_
I loved reading this section -- it reminded me of Greek, Norse, and Native American myth. It's good story, and it tempts me to include it, lock, stock, and barrel, into my home brew campaign. And it's probably pliable enough for me to tweak it here and there and then do just that.

_Plug n' Play gods and their churches_
What I'm more likely to do, however, is take the gods and their churches out and plug them in where they fit into my existing home-brew. The book gives quite a bit of help for this sort of thing. The churches are well laid out, and yet they can be self-contained; that is, the churches don't wholy depend on the mythology presented in the book. Useful, that.

Kudos, BTW, on the structure of the book with respect to churches, clerics, "paladins", and new PrC. It's all wrapped up in a seamless whole, so that the relationships between the clerics, "paladins" (holy warriors, a superior concept, IMO), and the secret orders (PrCs) is believable and very playable. Makes me (almost!) want to play a goody-two-shoes Holy Warrior.

_Cosmography Tool-kit (or "how the gods, the universe's creation, and the Planes of Existence fit together")_
The thing this book is best at, IMO, is how it opens up Myth and the Gods for you to tinker with. Paired with the excellent WotC offering, Manual of the Planes, I'm not sure there's anything else you need to come up with a compelling and logical cosmography. How the universe is created => how the gods act => how their churches are structured => how PC clerics et al. act. It's all there, so that if the PC asks....well, he'll get at least one answer....
******************************************
_Conclusion_

Production: 5 - Excellent. Fonts, headers, and spacing is very good. Layout and organization is excellent. I was very happy with both the table of Contents and the index. Note to publishers: this is how it should be done for all products!

Art: 4 - Good. The art work quality is good, most of the time, and the art work is very topical to the text on the page.

Game Mechanics: 5 - Excellent. The new core class (Holy Warrior) is expecially good.

"Cool" Factor: 5- Excellent. Even the name is good (shout "Book of the Righteous!" a couple o' times...you'll get what I mean). The mythology and churches are especially inspiring.

Overall: 5 - Excellent. If you are a DM with a home-brew world, you're a fool for not having this book. It's that good.

Wow, what a book. It gives you everything you need to put the affiars of your Celestial world in order. It had a great story of creation, it explains all you need to know for each god. The Great church what a great idea, put together properly. I got through about the 1st 20 pages and realized this is "The Pantheon" for the new D20 fantasy genre. It explains the how and why of things.. Why is this god the god of Valor, how did he become this. The best part of all, is all the stuff the PCs should know, but we don't take the time to create. How the church interacts with the world, and the other churches; it's holy days and why, The Gods' view of the church. With over 300 pages of information it is worth every penny. What a resource. I have been a DM for 20 +years and this book is a must have for every GM. The Bar has been raised and Green Ronin Publishing is the new standard. Great Job Guys.

>>"If you own Defenders of the Faith, Deities and Demigods, and/or Faiths and Pantheons you are wasting your money on this. Way too generic to be useful. NOT the best money I've spent... "

On the contrary, this book renders all of those others completely redundant. What's more, this book is far, far more interesting to read, and far, far easier to incorporate piecemeal, or whole into any campaign. Of every RP book on my shelf--and I probably have a few hundred--this is by far the best money I have ever spent on an RP product as far as useability. Ignore the nay-sayer. He doesn't know what he's talking about.

Absolutely, and completely, well worth the price. See the lengthy review below for more info on the book.

As a financial practictioner,

I have applied many of the concepts from this wonderful work. One of the good things about the book is that it addresses not only the technical aspect of valuing business but also the art form as well. The book has assisted me in valuing companies in several industries and I consider it to be a one of the resources that is a staple of my practice.

Much thanks to the authors

"Gary Jones had provided a recipe for success for those considering adding business valuations to their practices. There are many technical, `how-to' books and courses in the valuation field; Gary's approach, however, is unique, comprehensive and valuable to aspiring business valuation practitioners."

"One of the challenges to providing business valuation services is educating inexperienced staff. Without adequate training, leveraging this profitable and growing service can be a problem. A new book by CPAs Gary Jones and Dirk Van Dyke helps.

The Business of Business Valuation is a primer for those just getting started in valuations. It covers the reasons for doing a valuation, the process and components, the valuation expert's role, as well as marketing and pricing. Even experienced valuators can benefit from the discussion of valuation consulting -- helping a business owner increase value, through smart management and policy, to achieve, overall personal, family and employee goals.

The anatomy of a business valuation is particularly helpful, as are the three sample valuation reports. You'll also find discussions of trends, ethics and coursework for porspective valuators."

Great book for valuators and all business owners.

"The Business of Business Valuation is a powerful book and it's about time. It is written in a clear and easy to understand style. What's exciting is the breadth of audience it addresses. This book is not just for valuation professionals...it is clearly for all business owners, employees, educators and students.

While most books on valuation only address the mechanics and components of the process, Jones and Van Dyke have given us directions on the business itself. The non-practitioner will especially benefit from this book by gaining insight into the process, how to select a professional and manage the relationship.

It is often said, `Information is power,' and this book is a must-have tool to obtaining an optimum result whether you are a valuator, business appraiser or the most important element -- the client.

This book is exactly what our industry needs at this time to continue fueling the flame of growth. Bravo!! Jones, Van Dyke and McGraw-Hill for having the courage to write and publish this cutting edge work."

This is the single most-important valuation book you will buy. It teaches you how to build a successful business valuation practice.

Gary Jones is a marketing genius, and this book contains far more marketing tips than you will find anywhere else.

I have a bookcase full of books about valuations. I've read this book twice: cover-to-cover. And it's packed so full of practical know-how that I keep discovering new, profitable ideas each time I dip back into it.

You may already know how to do business valuations. But if you want to build a successful practice...buy and read this book.

Essential resource for sacred musicians, Bach scholars

Alfred Durr, co-editor of the Neue Bach Ausgabe, shares his wealth of knowledge of this vastly varied and enormously rich repertoire in this large, expensive, but excellent book.

The first section of the book traces the development of the sacred cantata as a genre through 1750. Durr here defines important terms and places Bach's works in historical context.

The bulk of the text is a presentation of the cantatas in the order of the liturgical calendar. For each cantata Durr provides the text, its English translation, and the circumstances surrounding the piece's composition. He also offers analyses/descriptions which vary from half a page for some of the briefer, simpler works, to ten pages for works of particular depth (BWV 106 comes to mind).

This book is an invaluable resource to Bach scholars, singers, and conductors. Also consider Marvin Unger's book on Bach's Cantata Texts for an intertextual look at Bach as theologian.

...such as myself. Yes, yes, I know, it's bloomin' expensive for a paperback, but what a paperback! An essential companion to one of the greatest bodies of music ever written. Professor Dürr describes the cantatas in church year order, so first up is Advent cantata BWV61 "Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland" for the first Sunday in Advent. In addition to the church cantatas, you also get the secular cantatas and the Christmas Oratorio, not to mention detailed historical and musical descriptions. In short, a treasure trove of a book.

This is a very expensive, but wonderfully useful book. It gives the libretto to every single cantata plus information on the liturgical occasion for the cantata and a good, albeit brief discussion of the meaning of the piecel I quailed when I first bought it, because it is expensive. But it is my vade mecum. I use it constantly.

It contains an outstanding overview of the Islands' geology, political history and economy along with great suggestions for active sports tourism and passive sightseeing.

I was so impressed I bought the Bradt guide to the Canary Islands too.

I first visited the Cape Verdes in 1987 while researching the ATLANTIC ISLANDS, a sailing guide covering the Azores, Madeira group, Canaries and Cape Verdes, now in its third edition. Getting information on the Cape Verdes in the English language was difficult in the extreme -- if only Aisling and Colum's excellent book had been available then! These days no sane person should visit the islands without reading it first. The Cape Verdes come as something of a culture shock after the Canaries -- this book will explain why, and help you get the most from the experience. Buy it!

Irwin and Wilson's guide gives you all the factual information you need, and in addition succeeds in capturing the spirit of Cape Verde, with boxes on cultural and historical issues linked to each island. There is no doubt about it: This is the best guide available. If you read German, Rolf Osang's "Kapverdische Inseln" from Dumont is nearly as good and a useful supplement (especially when it comes to photos). The chapters on Cape Verde in Rough Guides' and Lonely Planet's books on West Africa are neither up-to-date nor in-depth enough if you plan to spend more than a few days in Cape Verde (which you should!).

The appendix on Crioulo language in Irwin and Wilson's book is brief but good. Don't be put off by the nasty details on horrible diseases in the section on health!

A thorough companion

If you plan on visiting the Islands of Cape Verde, this travel guide is essential. I have not found a better or more thorough guide. I currently live here but I am American and I knew nothing of the islands when I arrived. But after living here a while, I discovered that this book is as accurate as I initially thought. There are few things misspelled but that is to be overlooked by the amount of truely uselful and thorough the information is. I also liked the little touches of background and history on each island. It is very well done.

I really should be rating this series a 100! This is, by far, the most wonderful series of book that I have ever read in my life! I first found out about the Christy Miller books through the teen magazine Brio. I picked up the first book from the library this summer and I was hooked! The characters are so realistic, the stories make me laugh and cry, and TODD!! Is he a knight in shining armor or what?! (Please tell me that they will get married in one of the Sierra Jensen books!) These books are so uplifting, unlike the horror mysteries that are so popular with teens today. It's hard to find books that enforce a good Christian lifestyle, but this series succeeds many times over! I was so upset when the series ended (although I did love the ending!)

These books really relate to me!

As a Bajan gal, Cheryl Gittens-Jones took me back to my childhood, a childhood not to be forgotten. Old Henry, Cadbury Chocolate and Enid Blyton. The Cleansing showed a part of Barbados that you had to experience for yourself. Experiencing pain but still enjoying the pleasures of a small island. Unis came to Brooklyn still searching but the big city brought more pain. The characters came to life and I know that Nita is very proud of Unis because through it all, she made it to Brooklyn and back.

Cheryl Gittens-Jones captures the essence of colonialism and all of its insidious effects in her first novel. The Cleansing is an important read for anyone interested in a deeper understanding of the effects of international hegemony on the family; the metaphoric microcosm. Gittens-Jones reveals the truth that is rarely told, as seen through the eyes of a deeply perceptive Unis MonteClaire. I was fortunate enough to have attended a reading in which Gittens-Jones brought her chapter heading poems to life in the lyrical and emotional Bajan dialect. I highly recommend The Cleansing, or anything else written by this young, passionate writer who writes from the soul.

There is another book, Peggy Tillman's Clicking with your dog,
that often gets the press, but this is a much better book. Dr. Jones talks about how to get a non-interested dog interested in clicking and how to move up from there. Tillman's book gives every task a name though often does not discuss how to group them and make them into new combinations. Dr. Jones has no problem with grouping, re-grouping, organising and such activities.

This book has plenty of activities which you can start with and use for either performance or comfirmation activities plus a weekly planner. She gives lots of 'shaping' tips and problem solutions. A superb training manual. Sorry it's op.

Dr. Jones' section on biopsies clearly explained what to expect, and helped to put my mind at ease. His book contains a wealth of additional information on prostate difficulties, clearly written in a style readable to those who are not a medical professionals.

This is one of the best dealing with the prostate. Check out the one published by the Mayo Clinic and the one published by the Johns Hopkins Unversity Press. Be careful of the copyright date. Theories and methods are changing rapidly. I found out that I am ahead of my urologist who, in my opinion should do one of three things: (1) Buy some new books, (2) Go back to medical school or (3) retire because his knowledge is obsolete. BE PREPARED! DOCTORS ARE NOT GOD (some may think they are). This is a serious situations. Do your own homework and don't rely on your doctor to know everything and not screw up. Don't overlook the book about a "headache in the pelvis". If you do not get good results from your urologist, your internist may know more practical solutions and don't hesitate to get a second opinion from a different urologist. I am disgusted with urologists. I go to two, at present, who do not even agree with their own partner. It's scary!

I had received an early warning sign. The possibilty existed that I had prostate cancer, a disease that killed my father. In my doctor's office was a book he had written entitled "The Complete Prostate Book". I obtained a copy of the book from Amazon.com so as to study the options available to me. Some months later my cancer was confirmed and I was well prepared to make a decision on my behalf.

The book. while technical in nature, is written with an understanding of the anxiety and emotions that a man will encounter as he decides the treament that is best for him. This is done with facts and actual experiences of men who walked the path of Prostate examination and treatment.

Outstanding Resource- Easy to Read!

When Dr. Jones titled this book... he meant it! It IS complete.

This book is a fantastic resource. All facets of prostate problems are discussed, from the very simple to the very complex, in a manner that is easily understood. Whenever medical terms are utilized they are defined and when possible, examples are given to improve understanding. The section of the book on prostate cancer is phenomenal. If you, or someone you love has been diagnosed with prostate cancer and are overwhelmed with information and treatment options, I would highly recommend reading this book.

There are very few absolutes in medicine, especially regarding individualized medical treatment. Dr. Jones allows the reader to arm himself with information so that he (along with his urologist) can make the best decisions about his care.

This book was very helpful in preparing for the IBCLE exam. The photos on the included CD were similar to those found in the exam. The questions and review sections were also very instrumental.

Whatever tools you use to prepare for the IBCLC exam, you can never challenge yourself enough. Each time you must think through a situation or analyze the facts presented, you are stengthening what you know. And, how can you go wrong with ANYTHING that Linda Smith writes! She is among the nation's most experienced lactation consultants, whose daily work involves handling lactation questions and concerns from around the globe. She has never responded to any of my questions with anything less than excellence!

This text and tests were very helpful in preparation for the lactation consultant exam. Very good practice exams helped those of us who haven't been in school for a while. The exams help with content and timing. CD Rom was helpful for the picture portion of the exam.

This book is an excellent preparation and a "must have" for the IBCLC Exam. If you have not taken a board exam in a long time, this book gets you into "exam mode". Sometimes, taking a test of this nature requires good exam skills. This book gives you plenty of much needed practice. The first part of the book delves into the different sections on the exam blueprint. It lists topics to learn and resources to read. The second part is three 200 questions tests. Eighty some questions in each test are based on pictures from the CD-ROM. The answers generally give the reasons for the right and wrong answer, list the difficulty of the question, and state from what section of the exam blueprint it pertains to. Having practiced with these tests, I felt very confident going into the Exam. It also is a great review for LCs who are retaking the certification exam. I heard comments from several LCs who stated the first exam they took they did not do as well as they thought because oftentimes taking exams is all about practice. They performed much better on the subsequent exams when they studied their mistakes. This is a "must have" for everyone planning to sit for the board exam.
