Jones Books

As someone who wasn't a math major but who has been trying to get up to speed on lebesgue measure and integration, I found this book to be truly accessible. Unlike other "introductory" texts (such as Kopp's "Measure, Integral and Probability") I could follow the reasoning in this book without much difficulty.

The only criticism I have of the book has to do with the first chapter. Its purpose is to provide background mathematical material and given the author's clear ability to explain difficult concepts, I wish that it covered that material in greater detail.

For others who may be looking to build a foundational understanding of this material but who may not be mathematicians, I'd also recommend Pitt's "Measure and Integration for Use" (1985) or his "Integration, Measure and Probability" (1963) (both out of print but fairly easy to find). Those books, along with Jones', are well-used items in my library.

This book is truly marvelous. Unlike many other books written by mathematicians, this one does not focus entirely on the overlycomplicated symbolism that has become so frighteningly common in modern textbooks on pure mathematics. The author, for the most part, demonstrates the concept before moving on to nonconstructive methods. This is accomplished via simple pictures, depicting simple figures such as rectangles. By using these to demonstrate the concepts of set theory, and lebesgue measure, the reader almost certainly will develop some awareness of lebesgue integration. For someone not already familiar with set theory (like myself) I suggest writing down the key terms of set theory (presented in the first 23 pages of the book) and keeping them with you while reading. Mathematical rigorousness should come secondary to understanding the key concepts, and therefore the reader might want to skip over nonessential ideas (usually some kind of proof related to an extension of a key concept) and go right to what is needed to understand what is going on.

"Lebesgue Integration on Euclidean Space" is a nearly ideal introduction to Lebesgue measure, integration, and differentiation. Though he omits some crucial theory, such as Egorov's Theorem, Jones strengthens his book by offereing as examples subjects that others leave as exercises. The best example of this is his section on L^p spaces for 0 < p < 1.

The book's greatest strength, however, is its readability. Whereas Royden gives no hint as to how much work is needed between steps, Jones highlights important steps in proofs, not just the important proofs. It is this motivated style that makes his book useful.

Jones is so careful in his construction of the theory that differentiation does not appear until Chapter 15, and specific results for R^1 come only in Chapter 16. But the wait is worth it.

While Jones has written a great introduction, the book cannot be used for more advanced courses. As the title suggests, the discussion is restricted to Euclidean spaces. In addition, his direct jump to measure on R^n and the use of "special rectangles" therein make the development incongruous with other books. But what is sacrificed in depth is made up for in breadth, with Jones hinting at how the theory is used in other branches of math. There's even an entire chapter devoted to the Gamma function!

As a student, I have found Jones's book more instructive on basic theory than Royden, Rudin, and Wheeden & Zygmund. I highly recommend it as a first-semester introduction to Lebesgue theory or as a source of clean, fundamental presentations of proofs.

This is a terrific text for a first course in graduate-level real analysis, and is suitable for self-study. It develops Lebesgue integration theory slowly, in a very clear manner. In addition, the latter part of the book covers the basics of Fourier Analysis and important topics in differentiation. I frequently refer to this book, as the results are easy to find.

One of the problems with modern mathematics is its obsession with rigor which has been attended, over the last few decades, by a mushrooming of symbols and jargon. Much of it is not clearly related to the ideas they serve to label, as evidenced by such terms as the topological use of "filter" whose etymology is obscure (ascribed by some to H. Cartan). Moreover, the particular subject of Lebesgue integration and its generalizations is made even more confusing by a wide variety of approaches depending on an author's penchants--many of whom are enamored with a purely axiomatic approach and who make little or no appeal to intuition or--God forbid!--pictures. The author of the present work is obviously someone who has actually taught mathematics and taught it lovingly. This book is an excellent read with lots of interesting topics well explained from a student's point of view. There seems to be a nice ramping from the truly elementary to the sophisticated, which means the book will interest experienced mathematicians, scientists and engineers. There are lots of "doable" problems that the reader can solve along the way. For the experienced mathematician these little problems help alot as a refresher (Oh!, now I remember, that's how you do it.). I like the emphasis on Euclidean space. Somehow, I always feel more comfortable there! It gives me things I can actually construct and doodle on paper. And, it allows the author to use a few figures in a meaningful way. Which is another of the book's strong points and if I could recommend a future improvement, it would be to bring on more of those pictures! Tristram Needham has done a nice job along these lines with his book "Visual Complex Analysis." (I ordered several copies as Christmas gifts--just kidding!). Anyone who has taught mathematics and genuinely wished to be understood by his students has, at various times, drawn them pictures. Inside the cover sheets are lists of integration formulae, a fourier transform table, and a table of "assorted facts" on things like the Gamma function; which show that this is not only a book on Lebesgue integration but a calculus book with the Lebesgue integral occupying center stage. Everyone who has been enamored by the notion of the integral--as I was as a freshman calculus student and have been ever since--will want to have this book on their shelf.

Beautiful photography, follows and expands on the extremely well done PBS series.

I picked up this book without having seen the companion PBS series, but now I'd really like to see it. The book presents a very nice story for each lighthouse visited, discussing more of the people stories that go along with the history of the houses themselves. A really nice find for lighthouse fans.

It is very informative and provides much detail about all the lighthouses. There are numerous pictures and they are absolutely great. This book also gives you very good directions on how to travel to each of the lighthouses some of which are very remote. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

I loved Ray Jones book, "Legendary Lighthouses". I do have copies of all his books, since he is married to my daughter.This book he autographed, For Mom Happy Chanukah Keep the lights burning. Ray & Fran. Arent I lucky!!

Ray Jones is among the best lighthouse photographers working today. He provides some of his best photos for a book in which writer John Grant provides a good narrative and history of lighthouses in general. This book strikes a good balance between information and photography.

Finally, a well thought out book for parents thinking about the college process! My favorite story is early in the book setting the tone for a great and helpful read. Early on, the author is clear that the process is out of control for many parents. As the Admissions Director for MIT, she makes it clear not to worry about college until it is time, rather than picking your preschool with intent to head to the IVYies....This book really tells us there is much more to learn on this road and truly this book is all about that journey in a healthier way!

Really grounded for both parents and teens. A must to read before any other books on college, including the guides to colleges. This gets you centered on what is important and aligns your values; then you can focus on the facts about colleges. A great duo.....a college admissions dean and a pediatrician....both care deeply about kids and speak to what they need.

I found this book to be useful. The author had several suggestions that we had not thought of and facts we were not aware of. The whole college admissions process is way harder than when I went through it, and I would say, there is a lot of negative as far as I can see. Her book is encouraging that the process can be a positive one, if you can step out of the frenzy that most other kids and parents seem to be embroiled in. The only reason I gave it 4/5 stars instead of 5 is because I felt there was some conflicting information between our school's college counselors and her and that's confusing.

As parents who have seen many of our friends completely lose perspective as their kids apply to college, my wife and decided that we would not go down that road when our time came. Forget all the books that imply they will get your child into a "brand name" school. It's about discovering together a place where they can grow, and strenghtening your relationship as you launch them toward their future. In the name of sanity, I recommend this book (and also a great one our own pediatrician recommended, "Getting In Without Freaking Out.") Stop hovering -- start helping your kids by not imposing your agenda.

Ms. Jones's advice on how the parents of high school juniors and seniors can reduce stress in the college admissions process is spot on.

I was lucky enough to receive Ms. Jones's advice when she spoke to a standing-room-only crowd at our Boston area high school. For those not so lucky, you can obtain the advice in her book, coauthored with pediatrician Kenneth R. Ginsburg.

Parents - and their children - will benefit from Jones's advice for two reasons: 1. Jones explains WHY current parents are so hyper about the admissions process (partly due to the fact that we parents are from the generation which mistakenly believes we can accomplish anything!) 2. And Jones gives practical advice on HOW each parent can reduce their child's stress in the admission process, including actions that can be easily implement right away.

Every parent of a high school junior or senior should buy her book today.

This book is perfect when you're bored, with friends, or just about anytime. Theres quizzes on everything from A-Z including some on Lizzie McGuire which are very challenging. I reccomend this book to girls of all ages, even if you aren't big Lizzie fans.

I have a large library of commentaries but of the practical books I own there are more on prayer than any other subject. There are many great books on prayer but it has been my experience that reading books on prayer seldom causes one to pray. Duewel's book on prayer will make you stop and pray long before you get to the end. As I think of all the great Christians who have written on prayer - i would still say this is the best inspirational and practical book I have found so far. Buy it, read it, and pray.

I just finished reading this book; it was given to me as a gift many years ago. All I can say is that if one is *truly* seeking the Lord and is *ready* to take on the burden and work of prayer, it is a must read. Truly in these days, "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.", (Matthew 9:37)

It's the first book that I've read that I've become reluctant to lend to other simply because I know I will need it as a prayer guide and reference; I'd rather buy those who want to borrow my copy their own copy!

This book holds the secret to the kind of life that pleases God. Nothing else we do is as important as the work of prevailing prayer from a holy heart. Reccommend to all who desire to serve God in a way that will delight Him.

This is the first book I have read on prayer. It covers so many topics that I do not feel I need to read any further books on this subject. Look at it's table of contents and you will see what I mean. Even though it is very comprehensive it is also easy and enjoyable reading.

I don't know why some books become hot sellers in local Christian bookstores, while others remain hidden. I suspect part of it has to do with quality, but part of it also has to do with marketing.

I have never seen Duewel's work in a Christian bookstore. I only stumbled onto his works within the past few years and then at the recommendation of a pastor friend.

Duewel is one of the deepest authors I have ever read on the subject of the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer, and on prayer, and on spiritual power. Read everything you can find by this man.

Our Grandchildren enjoy the exploits of two rather non-typical children, as long as I read it to them... even got them away from their electronic games! Good to excellent readers over age 10 might be able to keep the pace, but others would get lost in the words and asides. Now that we have had Harry Potter, the British idioms are not as foreign as when our now 26-yr-old tried to read it.

This book is one of my favorite books I have ever read. It is one of those gems you find that no one else seems to know about. The illustrations are fun, the story is comical, not in a silly, stupid way that some "funny" stories can be, but in a way that will actually make you laugh out loud. And the story is actually a very nice story, ending without giving you the sense that other books can of, "Well, it had some nice parts, but what was the point?" I enjoyed it as a child, and I still enjoy it as an adult (well, semi-adult). I only hope that my copy will survive for my own children.

I chose this book because it is by my fourth favorite comedien, Terry Jones. It is about a boy named Nicobobinus and his friend Rosie, who go to find the land of the Dragons, because Nicobobinus can do anything. My favorite character is the Golden man, because it is funny that a gold statue walks, talks, and has servents.

This book is a great one for any young, or old person who is looking for a wonderful, and adventurous story. I read this book a long time ago and couldn't help but look it up to see if there were more readers who felt the same way about it.It is about a young boy and girl who go on a long journey to find dragons blood.They have a very close call many times, but they finaly find it and continue on their journey safely.I can't wait to read it again.

Terry Jones adds his wonderful sense of humor and blends it with fantasy and wonder. If you read Nicobobinus, by Terry Jones I promise you'll love it!

I loved this book! It was so much fun to read.
I read the Christy Miller series and the Christy and Todd series. I loved both series and wanted to read more.
I decided to read the Sierra Jensen series. I had my doubts about if it would be as good as the Christy Miller series. My doubts are all erased!

I absolutely love this book! It was SO much fun to read and I really identify with Sierra. As I read this book, I felt myself getting closer to God.
I like how she has a crush on Paul- it's so cute!

I recommend this book.

Sierra returns to a new home in Portland after a missions trip in England. After seeing all her new friends paired up with boyfriends, she feels life out being a member or the boyfriend-less "Pals Only" club. Then she meets the mysterious Paul. Can she decide what's right for her in a world of love and stay true to God's Will at the same time?

In this book, Sierra Jenson is heading back to the US after a missionary trip in Europe. Only she's not going back to Texas. While she was in Europe her family moved to Oregon to live with her Granna Mae, who is old and needs care. On the way back to America, Sierra meets another American : a boy that amazingly has connections to other people in her life. Even after they part, Sierra can't get her mind off Paul. She has given him some advice that she doubts he'd take, but all she can do is pray for this mysterious boy. After arriving in Oregon, Sierra has a hard time adjusting to her new life. Her family has had time to get settled, but they expect Sierra to adapt right away to her new circumstances. She dislikes the school she's going to and has difficulty dealing with her grandmother's memory lapses. And she stilll can't keep her mind off of Paul. Then Sierra tries to sort out her life. She tries harder to adjust to school, her grandmother's mind starts to get a bit better, and then she receive a very interesting letter... This is one of the best books I've ever read. It kept me laughing and also encouraged me. If you read only one fictional book this year, make it this one!

"Only You, Sierra" picks up where "A Promise is Forever," the last book in the Christy Miller series, left off. Readers of that series will enjoy finding out more about the characters they know and love, but the Christy Miller books are not a prerequisite for this book. Sierra is a compelling character and this book can certainly stand on its own.

When Sierra returns from a life-changing missions trip in Europe, she feels mature, godly, and confident. In the airport in London, and later on her flight back to Portland, Sierra encounters Paul, a young man who she feels a strong connection to. Her direct manner fascinates him; at the same time, she pricks his conscience. They both will remember this meeting for a long time.

When Sierra arrives "home," it's not to the home she left, as her family moved in with her beloved grandmother while she was in Europe. Suddenly, Sierra has to deal with a new city, new school, and her Granna Mae's failing mind. For the first time in her life, she is the outsider, and she retreats into herself while she tries to figure out how to deal with it.

Fortunately, God has not left Sierra alone, and she learns to lean more on Him in times of uncertainty.

This book is the first in a series of twelve, which will appeal most to teen- and pre-teen-aged girls. If you don't fall into that category, though, don't let that stop you. We can all benefit from Robin Jones Gunn's gentle way of revealing God's love.

This book is great. It tells how Christy, Katie, Doug, and Sierra's missions trip ends. Its especially wonderful becuz it sorta starts where a promise is forever left off, except this book is more sierra focused. i still love this book, and i love the whole sierra jensen series. They are ALL must reads!

I receieved these books whenever I was in middle school. I am now 22 years old, and from time to time I will go back and re-read them. Robin Jones Gunn really has done something wonderful in writing these books. They are sweet, innocent reads that bring the reader closer to their Heavenly Father. I recommend them from the bottom of my heart.

Christy Miller will forever be my favorite book character. I can relate to her and the situations she encounters. At the end of the last book, I cried my eyes out, feeling as though i had lost my best friend. Serria Jensen is no different. These are characters you can truly connect with, who will ultimatley lead you closer to the Lord. I recommend these books to all christian teens!!

I love the Christy Miller Series and I have just started the Sierra Jensen Series! They can keep me hooked for hours! I am begging for 5-12 of the Sierra Jensen series. It is a continual of the Christy Miller and like they help you with your relationship with God and his Amazing Grace and love and they help you realize how truly amazing God is! I recommend these books to anyone! Read all of them!

The Sierra Jensen series is great. It is inspiring especially to all those new Christians out there. It is light reading especially good for a busy lifestyle but also made me think that maybe my relationship with God is not good enough.
I can really understand Sierra's life as it is very much the same as mine. Then again, my life isn't that bad so maybe now i'll be able t thank God more for how he is working in me.
These books and the Christy Millar series are an awsome read and believe me, your missing out if you don't read them. Thannx amazon as i got me sierra series here a few weeks ago!!!!!

Excellent way to start learning the history of state sponsored terrorism. A real pocket history book for the uninformed masses. History class didn't cover this, unless you were lucky & had a brave teacher.

Watson, creator of the propagandamatrix.com website, has compiled his research into a book. His ideas parallel those of Texas radio host Alex Jones, and you would basically get the same facts and theories presented to you watching some of Jones' videos. Watson examines the history of the Hegelian dialectic applied to social manipulation and the use of problem-reaction-solution schemes to move the "New World Order" agenda forward. There isn't much new here for those already familiar with these topics, while Watson does a solid job of laying out the evidence for his views.

Don't you think it's strange how those who benefit the most from terror attacks are governments and big business? It's time to ask yourself some serious questions. Who benefits from these "attacks"? The answers are simple, just watch how events unfold after the attacks take place. Governments are empowered and grow tremendously, new laws get passed. Big business, especially the oil industry, suddenly reap huge profits when the "evil doer's" oil fields get confiscated and are then controlled by American and international conglomerates. I find it very interesting that when "cavemen" hijack planes and crash them into buildings, major corporations and their henchmen in the various nation's capitols suddenly get even more rich and powerful. Buy the book and learn the truths that you aren't supposd to know.

I haven't read this book, but I desperately want to. I want the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth of the so-called "terrorist attacks" of September 11,2001 in America.

All that is coming from the American media - be it in the form of television, newspapers, magazines, or radio - concerning 9/11 is garbage. The powers that be are shoving heaps of lies, ramming it down our throats, and numbing our brains. My fellow concerned citizens, it is up to each one of us to demand the truth not only about 9/11 but also about this "war" in Iraq.

Ask yourselves this: Do you really want to live under the "New World Order"? Do you really think it would be a safe, peaceful, happy place? Educate yourselves; decipher truth from lies from every source available. I'd like to be able to do that once I read this book - if I can get a copy of it.

One of the side effects of prostate cancer treatment is a high incidence of impotence.

This book is informative. It is helpful. But the big questions for a patient are: What are my odds? and How long will it take to get potence back after treatment?

This book is not particularly helpful with these big questions.

On the other hand, this book does cover just about all of the rest of the subject you could imagine. It covers the physical causes and all of the potential treatments and effectiveness of each treatment. It puts a ptient in an excellent position for an informed choice.

Never before has such comprehensive and state-of-the-art medical information been so inviting and enjoyable. This superbly-written guide appeals to all, from the afflicted to the curious. It has become an integral part of my treatment algorithm. Finally--Chicken Soup for the pole!

This is a comprehensive easy to understand book for anybody. I believe Mr. J. Stephen Jones is indeed a leading urologist in our world. I recommend his book without hesitation in general...

This is the most current and complete book available on the topic of maintaining or regaining sexual health, taking a balanced approach to a serious subject. It uses appropriate and tasteful humor to disarm nervousness and embarassment most men and their partners experience when dealing with sexual issues.

If you have questions about impotence, this book has the answers!

Dr. Jones has taken a subject that in the best of circumstances is difficult to discuss, and made it practical and approachable. He dispels the myths about impotence in a humorous and tactful manner while providing hope and options for treatment. He combines useful information with humor in a style that is very appealing.

Anyone who wants/needs information about impotence should start with this book!
