Bobby Jones Has Something to Say...Review Date: 2006-05-13
In his book, "Bobby Jones on Golf", Jones really gets to the spirit of the game. This is a great book on the nuances, technicalities, and philosophies of the game of golf.
If you read carefully and take his advice seriously, I believe you will become a better player. I can't guarantee this, but there is no reason why a beginner can't shoot in the 80's within the first year to two years of playing. If you do the reading and practice the fundamentals; after 3 years of playing on a regular basis (at least 3 to 4 times a week) you should be shooting in the 70's.
This book is a very easy and compelling read. Moreover, I think you will really enjoy Jone's prose. It's Jone's prose that makes this an enjoyable reading experience. It's by no means flowery or pretentious, but understated and blunt.
Much like reading a Jane Austen novel; it feels like Jones is actually speaking directly to you. And this is the best way to learn about something very complicated; to have the narrator / author personalize his language by using parables, analogies, and personal stories to make it easier for the reader to understand the complicated nuiances and idiosyncracies of the game of golf
Another important note: There are hardly any illustrations and no photographs in this book. There doesn't need to be either because Jones does such a great job in his explantions that his words paint pictures. I was glad that he didn't have to resort to any photos; it would have distracted from his impeccable teachings.
I highly recommend this book whether you're a beginner, intermediate, or advanced player. Not only will you learn from a golfing master, but you will have a new appreciation for the greatest game on earth.
Along with this book, I also recommend the reading of Ben Hogan's, "Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf", Mickey Wright's "Swing the Wright Way", and Harvey Penick's, "The Little Red Book".

As Wile E. Coyote would say "Genius, pure genius"Review Date: 2002-06-19
Part autobiography, part instruction, part tribute, this book shows us the man behind the screen, or should I say behind the pencil? We often wonder where a genius comes from - Chuck seems to say from anywhere. His mark on the development of the cartoon is undeniable, and monumental. But just as you cannot appreciate art fully until you know about the painter, so it is with Chuck's cartoons. I have a greater appreciation for the work that goes into developing these 8 minute masterpieces. Yes, it's true that Jones gave us some of the clunkers in the 60's as the Warner Brothers studio (and the MGM studio) animation division gasped what seemed to be its last breath. But it's all the more amazing that Chuck could produce such works given what little he had to work with. The world would be poorer were it not for the gives Chuck has given us, including Wile E. Coyote (super genius!),and the Road Runner, Pepe Le Pew, Marvin the Martian and many others. His style was distinctive, his contributions monumental and behind it all, he was a fascinating and talented man. This book stands as a tribute to this genius now that he's no longer with us.

The Life and Times of Charles M. JonesReview Date: 2000-09-05
This book lists all of the cartoons he's been involved with (Warner Bros, MGM, Dr. Suess specials, and many others). Also, he talks about growing up, how real life inspired his cartoons, what it was like working in Warner Bros studio, pays tribute to partners Tex Avery, Friz Freleng, Mike Malthese, and Abe Levitow, and talks about other projects he's done (like his How to Draw From the Fun Side of Your Brain). And as the other reviewers have pointed out, there's an animated cartoon of the Roadrunner and the Coyote on the pages of this book.
Since this book was originally published, he's produced one video in the 1990's (Chariots of Fur) and the historical and whimsical book Daffy for President (available through the US Postal Service).

A review of The Madonna MurdersReview Date: 2008-06-21
The book was particularly timely for me, as I was going out to visit the Bay area for the first time in many years. I live on the east coast. I also learned about the Crystal Skull, another icon featured in the book as well as the latest Indiana Jones movie. Again, the book was particularly timely for me, as I saw Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull right after my reading of the book. It certainly made my viewing of the movie more enjoyable.
I recommend it for someone looking for an entertaining story as well as a little education.
The Madonna Murders by Pamela CranstonReview Date: 2008-02-29
The author is an Episcopal priest and a Russian history scholar. She very artfully incorporates poignant passages from Metropolitan Anthony Bloom's spiritual writings at the beginning of each chapter. She gives the reader a marvelous introduction into the spiritual meaning of Eastern Orthodox iconography. She knows and weaves the history of the Russian Orthodox Church both in the Bay Area and abroad throughout this tale of murder, mystery, and redemption.
I highly recommend the book to anyone who would like to read a delightful "whodunit" whilst feeling inspired at the same time.

Kenyon refuses to play the complacency gameReview Date: 2007-11-15
One word for this book: riveting. No, two words: riveting, compelling...actually, Rabid would take more words than I even know to use, and I'm a wordsmyth myself. I could not put it down.
T.K. Kenyon's Rabid is an amazing story. Masterfully woven plotlines and an absolute commitment to truth and utter refusal to play the complacency game left me feeling as if I had gone on an "explore" with the author. Kenyon has the gift of pulling the reader in to the world of her characters. She manages to make an untouchable character like Leila a sympathetic one.
I look forward to Kenyon's next novel. Can't wait.
Highly readable yet surprisingly deepReview Date: 2007-12-06
Kenyon does an impressive job of juggling the four intertwined characters, and I was happy with three of the four endings. One of the character's endings just seemed abrupt and unfinished based on everything that had happened, but this didn't make me enjoy the book any less. This is an amazing and inspiring first effort. Kenyon skillfully teeters on the edge of absurdity with several of the elements in her plot; one almost expects her to take this plunge that many first-time novelists would indulge in, but she keeps the story firmly on the rails despite navigating amongst disparate settings.
If you're weary of a lot of the overwrought and unnecessarily obscure fiction that's been on the market lately and want a read that is unashamedly enjoyable yet thought-provoking, you won't go wrong picking up "Rabid."

Although nothing happens immediately, Paul eventually begins paying attention to Johanna. Little does she know it's because he and girlfriend Carla have split up, and he needs a replacement. Whatever the reason, Paul and Johanna become a couple.
Grades used to hold top priority for Johanna, but they've been moved to second place to make room for hours spent with Paul. Needless to say, her parents are not thrilled and neither is her best friend, Pam. Paul wants to spend so much time with Johanna that he demands she choose between her best friend and him. There is no choice - Paul is the love of her life.
As time passes, Johanna begins to notice that Paul's gentle caresses are becoming painful slaps, squeezes, and pinches. His loving words are now put downs said not only in private but also in front of their friends. Johanna doesn't know about Paul's hidden problems, but she's learning fast.
Paul's personality surfaces in the novel through letters written to "Dear Dead Dad." His father left when he was twelve, and news came later that he died in a car accident. His mother lost her husband, then her home, and then she "found" Jesus, and Paul began fending for himself. Anger issues and drinking problems begin complicating his relationships. He always apologizes and promises that "things will change," but doubt about their relationship haunts Johanna.
In THINGS CHANGE, Patrick Jones paints a chilling picture of physical and emotional abuse. People often question why the abused continues to "love" the abuser and refuses to seek help. Johanna's story attempts to show how loss of friendships and alienation of family keep the abused from reaching out. This emotion-packed novel tells a story that shouldn't be ignored.

Another student even wrote a note thanking me for letting her read a book which because of its realistic character portrayals helped her see herself through someone else's eyes.
Forced to read the book, I was cringing, as I hate YA literature. What a delight to learn that this was a novella that would not be put down. I found myself carrying it around all day until I was finished. Jones obviously has some talent for creating realistic characters, realistic situations, and a plot that enthralls readers.

Absolutley Could Not Put This Book Down! Excellent Read!Review Date: 2006-06-04
Mama Creole - It's very rare to come across so much compassion and kindness! This beautiful woman possessed this and so much more. She was brought to life for me thanks to this writers excellent descriptions and I was left feeling blessed to have learned some valuable lessons from Mama Creole.
Triple Threat - Surprise, Surprise, Surprised! Loved It! This one left me totally engrossed from beginning to end. The lengths that the main character, Gayla Camray went through to get revenge for her broken heart left me reading with my mouth agape through the end. Very exciting! I would love to read a sequel to this!
Genocide - Very well written and very insightful! A good look at Women faced with betrayl by their own gender! The writer could not have done better than to have the main character, Gayla Camray so eloquently open the eyes of the reader by sharing her own experiences as well as those of other Women through her work as a director in a Womens clinic. I agree that Men and Women alike should learn the valuable lessons of the darker side of sisterhood from this story.
Gloria Tillis Jones is so obviously gifted with her writing! I was taken with each story in this book and I look so forward to reading much more of her writing in the future!
I LOVED THIS BOOK, IT KEEPS IT REAL ABOUT THE TRUE RELATIONSHIPS THAT HAPPEN BETWEEN FEMALESReview Date: 2006-02-07
I LOVED "A TRILOGY OF WOMEN" IT WAS AN EXCELLENT FRONTLIST READ, IT WAS FACT BASED FICTION, WONDERFUL AND CHARACTERS WERE MESMERIZING.
THIS BOOKS WAS TOTALLY EDUCATIONAL, HUMOROUS, MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD AND CRY, IT WAS DEAR TO MY HEART AND GAVE ME A SENSE OF REALITY AND UNDERSTANDING OF SOME OF THE MANY THINGS I HAVE HAD TO DEAL WITH IN THE SISTERHOOD OF WOMEN.
I JUST WANTED TO HAVE FRIENDS, LOVE THEM AND BEFRIENDED BACK BUT MOST OF THE TIME YOU DEAL WITH JEALOUSY, BETRAYAL AND NOT SURE IF YOU CAN TRUST ONE AS FAR AS YOU CAN THROW THEM.
MS OPRAH NEEDS TO GET TO THE BEAR FACTS OF RECOMMENDING BOOKS THAT CROSS ALL BARRIERS OF SOCIO-ECONOMICS, RACES, COLORS, CREEDS, AND GENDERS, FOR MEN CAN LEARN ABOUT WOMEN FROM THIS BOOK AND WOMEN CAN UNDERSTAND WHY THEY HAVE HAD TO DEAL WITH CERTAIN THINGS FROM OTHER WOMEN.
IT TEACHES YOU TO BECOME A BETTER PERSON FROM THE CHARACTERS WHO ARE REAL BUT BASED ON SOME FICTIONAL OR CHARACTERISTICALLY IT SEEMS TO PROTECT THE ACTUAL PEOPLE WHO MAY BE LIVING OR DEAD, SO I UNDERSTAND THE NAMES BEING CHANGED.
IT WAS GREAT BUT ACTUAL, REALISTIC AND THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN ONE OPRAH PROMOTED ON HER BOOK CLUB, BUT WE GET OTHERS THAT ARE LIES AND OR HYPE TO PROMOTE SOMEONE WHO DID NOT KEEP IT REAL OR AT LEAST BE CANDID ABOUT THE ACTUAL INFORMATION.
THIS IS ONE FOR YOU MS OPRAH IT HAS BEEN OUT SINCE 2002 YOU MAY NOT DEAL WITH THIS BECAUSE YOU HAVE YOUR GIRLFRIEND YOU TALK ABOUT ALL THE TIME MS GAIL, WHO IS A NICE LADY BUT EVERYONE DOES NOT HAVE THAT BENEFIT, SO IT HELPS TO UNDERSTAND WHY SOME WOMEN ARE LIKE THEY ARE, IT HELPS ONE TO MAKE PEACE WITH THEIR GENDER AND COMPREHEND THE PERPLEXITY THAT RUNS ALL BARRIERS FOR FEMALES.
EXCELLENT BOOK AND HIGHLY RECOMMEND, SUCH UNTAPPED TALENT LEFT TO BE SET APART WHILE OTHER BOOKS OF LESS CALIBRE ARE PUT ON HIGH, NO JUSTICE, NO PEACE, NO TRUTH, NOR REALITY.
I WISH YOU MUCH SUCCESS MS JONES AND HOPE THAT ONE DAY SOMEONE RECOGNIZES YOUR GENUIS. I WILL LOOK FORWARD TO OTHER BOOKS YOU MAY PRODUCE BUT I UNDERSTAND THE DELAY. HAVE A WONDERFUL LIFE AND BLESSINGS TO YOU MS JONES, ENJOYED YOUR BOOK IMMENSELY FROM START TO FINISH, ALL DIFFERENT AND UNIQUE LADIES I COULD RELATE TO.

A Great Debut Effort!Review Date: 2003-02-25
The first relationship most women have are with their mothers. In some cases, a solid relationship may be built with the grandmother who is the main caregiver. In the first short story "Mama Creole, the reader is introduced to Gabriella Angelique Bardot. Due to the death of her mother at her birth, Gabriella is raised by an incredibly strong matriarch Mama Dear. Gabriella grew up to become a very blessed, but generous individual in her community, known to those around her as "Mama Creole". Though never having children of her own, "Mama Creole" embraced family, friends and at times complete strangers. Readers will definitely find a little piece of their own mother, aunt or grandmother in the delightful "Mama Creole".
Where "Mama Creole" is a story of warmth, the second story "Triple Threat" is a sad story of betrayal and unbridled wrath. Raised in a broken home, Moiya Towers develops a close relationship with her best friend, Diedre during their years at college. The close relationship continues to flourish as the two women become business partners. Engaged to marry the dashingly handsome Kallos, Moiya anticipates having the family she has always imagined. Her dreams are shattered as the two people closest to her, Deidre and Kallos, commit the ultimate act of betrayal. Moiya unknowingly through surpising circumstances spins out of control on a path of vengence. Along the way, she discovers details about herself and her past. Truly shocking and fascinating material arises from this story!
The last story "Genocide" centers around Gayla Camray, the director of a women's clinic. A "Mama Creole" type, Gayla builds a support system for hurting women in the community. Through her own life experiences and those of the women she serves, Gayla discovers a pattern of destructive behavior among women against other women.
In this trilogy of stories, the reader is bound to be able to relate to one or more of the characters. I personally like how Jones structured this book with "Mama Creole" as the first story. Her warmth and desire to reach out to others serve as a sterling example for all women.
The following quote is being included with this review because it wrapped up the message of the book so eloquently. "Women have it hard enough without being so down on one another, suspicious, jealous, and backstabbing .... If women who are plaqued with the same problems on one level or another, whom can they trust?" Kudos to Gloria D. Tillis Jones for an extraordinary book. May its pages serve as a source of healing for women everywhere.
