I was looking for one larger volume dealing exclusively with the Battle of Bentonville, and this work more than fit the bill. There really isn't that much available on the battle in a single work, but I found that the author was more than up to the challenge, and feel no need to look further.

Hughes "Bentonville" a distant second to Bradley's work

If you can only purchase one book on the battle of Bentonville this book should be your second choice. I have read Hughes history of the battle as well as Mark Bradley's book on the same subject. Bradley's book covers the battle in much greater detail and has excellent maps. Hughes book is a good book, but head to head with Bradley's work finishes a distant second. Hughes gives a good overview, but I did not find his writing as engaging as I did Bradley's. Hughes book lacks the passion of the other book.

Nathaniel Cheairs Hughes Jr. some years ago did a book on the battle of Belmont, Grant's sort of victory in the early part of the war, and the book was very good. Hughes continues this trend with a book on the battle of Bentonville, which has been largely ignored by historians because the war was essentially over when it took place. Hughes explains the maneuvers with dexterity and skill, and shows why the battle was important and how the Confederates thought they were going to make something of the victory they hoped to achieve. Includes much participant accounts of various episodes from the battle. Recommended

This is a very enjoyable book to read and offers a detailed and well researched account of the final battle between Sherman and Johnston at Bentonville fought on March 19-21, 1865. This was the last full scale battle between the two opposing armies. The book has 9 maps which are well presented and the battle ones are very easy to understand and follow. Overall this book is a well documentated account of this very interesting and bloody battle.

This book is not only beautiful to look at but has exceptional recipies that are absolutely delicious! The illustrations by David McCall Johnston are truly an appreciation of art in the modern kitchen!

The Buffalo Cookbook was written "ahead of it's time" as food choices that were filled with high fat content seemed acceptable in the past. The low fat solution to eating red meat is a delightful change that teaches us how to maintain great taste while making wise choices.

This book is a very valuable resource! I would like to see it used as a reference in every medical office where maintaining good health is an issue. I treasure my copy!

Very outstanding work Ruth Mossok Johnston!

The Buffalo Cookbook is an amazing collection of recipes that pays tribute to a healthy alternative to red meat.Written ten years ago, ahead of its time, the recipes offer dozens of easily prepared dishes, many of which use the readily available ground buffalo meat. In addition to enjoying delicious food, the cook has an oppportunity to try new ingredients. Happily, a caloric chart is also included. Add to all that the gorgeously illustrated cover and tantalizing photographs and you have a cookbook for the ages.

I cannot disagree more with the previous reviewer. I've found this book to be a wonderful addition to my collection. I have made many of the recipes in the book and can attest to their excellent results. While some of the ingredients might be difficult to find in rural areas, any decent sized city with a well-stocked grocery store should have most everything listed in the book. We've especially enjoyed the Ziti tapenade-chevre, Pesto Pasta with grilled buffalo sausage and the Four roasted pepper, bean and shredded bison burrito grande (the only way I make burritos now).

Very exotic ingredients, hard to find and no subs listed

The recipes require exotic and hard to locate ingredients. There is an ingredient list in the back of the book to order items but they are costly, no substitutes are listed. We have a half of Buffalo in our freezer and having had this book for over 12 months have yet to use a recipe from it. It is not a very useful cookbook.

I have not read the book yet, butttt! In the synopsis, Crazy Horse is first called a Sioux, true, but he is actually a Lakota. Later he is called a Cheyenne, although the Cheyenne would love to call him one of their own, most novices know he was not.

This is a book that unlike most of Terry's books, started a little slow for me with the early encounters between Miles and Sitting Bull including Cedar Creek. I quickly became engrossed in the novel and the pages, as always, fell away in dramatic style until I found myself on the battlefield fleeing with Little Wolf and Dull Knife, or found myself as a soldier confronting a group of hiding Cheyennes firing piont blank. I walked this battlefield with Terry in 1996 and nobody loved their history and the people involved, both Indian and white more than Terry. He felt for the characters on both sides and makes them ever so real to the reader. Do not be fooled by the name, 'historical fiction.' This is history at its best, from the view of the people who lived, fought, and died for it. I think anyone interested should read this book and any other of Terry's books.

I'm reading this novel for a history class (interesting side note: the professor is friends with Mr. Johnston) and found the novel amazingly well written. Although I find the over abundance of detail throughout the book somewhat painful, it has overall been an excellent reading experience. I don't know that I would attempt another of his novels just for the fact that the writting is somewhat tendious at times... and challenging to grasp on a whole. The story told however, is something that should be preserved accurately for future generations and Terry does this very well indeed. The scenes during the actual battle are heart wretching... enough to make even the most seasoned person feel the anguish that the indians suffered at the hands of the U.S. Calvary! Historically accurate and well written... but not something you'd want to read just for the "fun" of it... since this is anything except a "fun" topic.

Terry C. Johnston does his homework. I've read every book in the Plainsmen series and I'm always amazed at the detail in witch Johnston tell's his stories. If you are intrigued by Great American Worriors the likes of Sitting Bull,Crazy Horse,Gall and Roman Nose, Then you'll want to delve into the statigies of Custer, Sheridan and Crook to rid the American Plains of these so called "Savages". This book and every book in this series are must reads.Terry C.Johnston, keep writing and I'll keep reading.

From the back cover:

She's unforgiving, headstrong and disobedient...she's a Whitelaw bride!

These three ladies of Hawk's Way are about to come face-to-face with something as rare as a friendly armadillo: three Texan men who are their equals! Each of these arrogant, opinionated, incredibly sexy ranchers is just itching to tangle with a passionate little spitfire in a lady's Stetson...and these women are all too happy to kick and scratch--and kiss--right back. Watch sparks fly--and love unite--at these unforgettable Whitelaw weddings!

Marriage...Whitelaw style...

Falcon Whitelaw offered his services--as husband and stand-in father--to a damsel in distress and her darling daughter. THE UNFORGIVING BRIDE was skittish about love, but this Whitelaw man could be very convincing...

Callen Whitelaw had one surefire way to soften up a rugged rancher out for revenge against her beloved father...THE HEADSTRONG BRIDE would marry him!

Zach Whitelaw chose his "convenient" wife for one reason only--to provice him with a brook of little Whitelaws. But no matter how many long, lazy days they spent in the marriage bed, THE DISOBEDIENT BRIDE refused to get pregnant...

And my review:

I've read and enjoyed almost every one of Joan Johnston's books. But this collection falls short of what this author is capable of. Of course, given the very short format of these catagory romances, that is to be expected, but it is still a bit of a let-down. I found that at least one character in each of these stories was either abrasive, or had very unbelievable reasons for making the decisions that they did.

In THE UNFORGIVING BRIDE, Mara, the heroine, blames Falcon, the hero, for her first husband's (Grant) death. But I didn't see how she could possibly blame him. Grant died because he drove while drunk, after he had met in a bar with Falcon. Only, Falcon left after the first drink, and had no idea that his friend would do something so irresponsible. It was just so stupid. He wasn't there. He didn't see his drunk friend get into a car and not try to stop him. Then it would have been his fault. I was left wondering why Mara didn't blame the bartender for serving Grant drinks, or the car manufacturers for not making a better airbag. It took her too long to admit that the only person responsible for Grant's death was...Grant! This was very annoying and detracted from my enjoyment of the story.

What did save THE UNFORGIVING BRIDE was the daughter, Susannah, who was fighting leukemia. She was so adorable that I would dare any reader not to love her. My heart would break for her suffering.

In THE HEADSTRONG BRIDE, it was the hero who was the annoying one. Again, he blamed someone for his father's death who had nothing to do with it. His claim was that this father had made some bad investments (supposedly on the advice of the heroine's father, Garth) that had been scams. When he had lost all his money, he had killed himself. The hero never even bothered to find out the facts (he was totally mistaken), just went down a twisted path of vengence where he decides to steal Garth's daughter from him back making her fall in love with him and then forcing her to choose. How twisted and sick. I wanted to shove his head into a pile of horse manure. (Well, that might have been difficult to do considering that his head was jammed way up his...well...a certain lower body orifice.) I felt that the heroine was waaaaay too good for him, and he didn't grovel nearly enough to satisfy me.

THE DISOBEDIENT BRIDE was a story that I didn't even finish. This time, it was the heroine who bothered me. I really hated the way she kept selling herself short. She marries Zach, knowing that he will never love her, even though she is secretly in love with him. I thought that to go into such a lopsided and unfair situation knowingly was idiotic. Plus, considering that the hero is 13 years older than her made it rather icky, especially when he kept calling her "kid" all the time. It was creepy instead of being cute.

So far, I haven't found any of the stories in the Hawk's Way series to be very satisfying, with perhaps the exception of THE COWBOY TAKES A WIFE, found in the Hawk's Way Rogues collection. If you want to read something good by Joan Johnston, I recommend THE INHERITANCE, THE COWBOY, THE TEXAN, the sisters trilogy (which includes TEXAS WOMAN, COMANCHE WOMAN and FRONTIER WOMAN) or THE CHRISTMAS BABY, a novella found in the A CHRISTMAS TOGETHER collection from Avon books. I wouldn't bother with HAWK'S WAY BRIDES unless you can find it in the library.

Par for the course

Not up to Johnstons usual standards. In each story there did not seem to be any depth to the relationship then BAM, they're in love. I found myself skipping pages and moving on to the story. The book was ok, nothing great.

Hawk's Way "Whitelaw Brats"...The Next Generation...#'s 6,7, and 8 In The series
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-06
If you've been following the romantic/modern day westerns in the Hawk's Way series by Joan Johnston, these three novellas are #'s 6, 7, and 8 in the series. "The Unforgiving Bride", "The Headstrong Bride", and "The Disobedient Bride" follow the stories of Garth and Candy Whitelaw's children, known as 'The Whitelaw Brats", now all in their 30's. Although, the stories all seem to follow a theme; marrying for the wrong reasons, and are somewhat formulized, Johnston manages to keep each story enjoyable, fresh, and the characters unique from the others. Also, these stories stand on their own from the last generation of Whitelaws in the first 5 books, but it is nice to know the background(which we get a little of in these stories as well). The first 5 if you are interested in all the Hawk's Way stories(they are all a pretty nice way to get lost for a while) are:"Honey and the Hired Hand","The Rancher and The Runaway Bride",""the Cowboy and the Princess","The Wrangler and The Rich Girl"(this one is the story of the parents of the Hawk's way Brides trio), and 'The Cowboy Takes a Wife".

So here are the next generation of Whitelaw love stories:

"The Unforgiving Bride"...This is middle sibling Falcon's story. Falcon runs into an old high school chum, Grant Ainsworth, on the street. Grant has with him, the most beautiful woman Falcon has ever laid his eyes on,Mara, his wife. He has thoughts about this woman that he shouldn't have about his friend's wife, but she has an effect on him, no other woman has ever had. They also have with them their little daughter Susannah. They are the picture of the perfect family. But all is not as it seems. Grant is a bit of a playboy and also an alcoholic., When the two friends meet for a drink, Falcon leaves Grant who wants to drink on his own. When tragedy strikes, Mara blames Falcon. She has as deep hatred for him. But in a twist of fate, when Susannah is diagnosed with a potentially fatal disease, she must turn to Falcon for help. His money can help the child. Falcon feeling guilty about the circumstances agrees reluctantly to help. But of course, the tension between the two turns to passion, and letting go of the past is not an easy thing to do. Their marriage may be doomed, and Susannah's life is what matters most.

"The Headstrong Bride"...Youngest sister Callen Whitelaw has been engaged twice. Both times to men her father disapproved of. Each time, she was determined to marry despite her father's disapproval, but both times, she came around and saw the men for who they really were and broke it off. But this third time, really has Garth, and her older brother Zach protesting. She is about to marry her father's enemy, Sam Longstreet. Sam is the most caring man she has ever met and is determined to make her life with him, despite her family's possible estrangement. Sam Whitelaw, may not be the man she thinks he is either, and has ulterior motives for his new bride..revenge on the Whitelaws! The passion between them is great, but Sam can never say 'I love You", knowing that when his mission is accomplished he will dump her. Can Callen tame this lone stallion, and will the Whitelaws and Longstreets be able to live in peace?

"The Disobedient Bride"...Although I think the term "disobedient bride", does not quite fit the story of oldest brother Zach's marriage to the wife he actually advertised for(she is more of a woman with her own mind), it was my favorite of the three. Zach has some deep rooted emotional problems when it comes to love. His first love died in an airplane crash two days before they were to be married. But that was 7 years earlier, and there is more to that story that Zach lets on. He just can't seem to get past it. But he wants heirs to his ranch "Hawk's Pride", land given to him by his father. When Rebecca Littlewolf sees the ad, she knows it was meant to be. After all, she lived on the ranch as a child while her father worked for Zach, and has been in love with him to this day. But Zach makes it clear right from the get-go that he only wants a mother for his children, and Rebecca lets him know that all she wants from him in return is to open a camp for children in remission of Cancer.Their passion heats up the pages while trying for a child, but Zach has given Rebecca 1 year to get pregnant. Can he keep from getting emotionally involved with this woman who heart is opened to everybody that needs a helping hand? Their story is a good one to get totally involved in.

These stories are also sold individually, and almost all the novellas are also sold in 2 in 1, or 3 in one books. some of them include 'Hawk's Way Grooms', and "Hawk's Way Rogues". Some of the books have a family tree in the beginning, so you can keep up with the family and also see the order of the books. Johnston has several other series to get involved with. One of my favorites was the 'Sisters of the Lone Star" series. Full length novels of romance and adventure in the old west, with a bit of history in each one. They are 'Frontier Woman", "Comanche Woman", and "Texas Woman". All great adventures, and sizzling romances.

Get lost in a romance for a while and enjoy the read....Laurie

This is the best audio Bible to which I have listened. Stephen Johnston narrates like no other. He has narrated more audio Bibles than anyone else, so he has experience and credentials. His voice fits the bill with its baritone range.

The clarity of the audio in this audio Bible is very good. This audio Bible does not have distracting background music or sound effects. It is simply a voice-only reading of the English Standard Version of the Holy Bible. You will not find any theatrics or dramatizing of the text. The narrator will use a sense of emotion to convey the mood of the scripture, especially when the scripture is someone speaking in anger or anguish. However, it is in no way distracting and is done in modesty.

In my opinion, the English Standard Version is one of the best word-for-word translations of the Holy Bible--only second to the New American Standard Bible (also available in audio format narrated by Stephen Johnston). If you are looking for a clear, easy to understand, easy to listen to audio Bible, I highly recommend this one to be in your consideration for purchase.

Sadly, I was required to purchase this book for an introductory Java course. The concepts presented are too basic to justify the price for this book, if purchased new. You can just as easily learn the same concepts from the excellent tutorials available online at Sun's, IBM's and other's websites for beginning Java developers. If you insist on a book, I suggest Bruce Eckel's "Thinking in Java," which is cheaper in print and also available at no cost as a PDF download.

I Love This Book!! I love it so much that I have purchased 6 copies, 5 of which I've given to others that I know stuggle with weight issues. I am on this site today to purchase several more. This book helps by showing where to focus. So many times we agonize over the symptoms or results of our issues, but never face & address the issues themselves. This book will guide you through a journey to not only face issues, but to make empowering decisions to overcome them. The book is based on sound Christian, Biblical principles. If used sincerely and prayfully this book can help you to not only transform how you look, but also transform your life.

At least that's the case with Terry C. Johnston's Plainsmen series. Red Cloud's Revenge was the second part of this long, ambitious series that had as a goal to depict in Johnston's rich fiction all the major campaigns against Native Americans on the western prairie after the Civil War. Focousing on the Bozeman Trail-war of 1867 and the climax that was reached in the Hay Field Fight and Wagonbox Fight. Johnston knows his frontier history, albeit I sense a lesser degree of historical fascination in these early volumes than in the last he wrote. One of his biggest faults here is his inclusion of the highly fictional character of a confederate renegade in the ranks of the Arapaho. Perhaps trying to make the reader easily understand that one should not cheer on the Indian part he makes them all even more one-dimensional than his protagonist, the irishman Seamus Donegan. Depicted as larger-than-life, despite that Johnston insists he is as normal as anyone of his readers, he is not easy to swallow in this book or in any of the first four books in this series. Too bad that Johnston had to write 1000 pages in this series before he made good and fascinating fiction out of still exciting history. Still, I recommend this series to anyone that can not get enough frontier history. It only gets better by each book. *(*) on the barometer.

I was very pleasantly surprised by Albert's first effort. I was able to picture and identify with the main character, and at times just want to shake him and say wake up you are ruining your life again, and the other characters that is very uncommon for a first time author. I hope with more confidence and experience he will develop his characters and their relationships more fully. This first effort left me wanting to know more about what happened between some of the characters that were only mentioned briefly. Again congrats on a way better than average first effort and I am looking forward to the next effort and hope the main character shows up again in the future.

A very pleasant surprise and a very good first book

I was pleasanlty surprised with Albert W. Johnston's first book. The main character was compelling and Johnston did an excellent job in creating the anti-hero that both repulses you and intersts you at the same time. The grittiness of the streets of Baltimore was like another very effetive character in the book. However, the development of the other characters was the most lacking aspect of this first effort. It seemed as if you were only scratching the surface of many of the characters that have such a crucial effect on the story. Another small shortcoming is the orignality of the storyline. But while Johnston treads over familiar territory with the plot, it is his understanding of the main character's motivations and the relationship that he leads the reader to build with the main chracter that really carries the story. Overall, a very good first novel that really shows the potential of Albert W. Johnston. I will definitely be looking forward to Johnston's next book as he continues to improve his abilities.

Dark, gritty emotional read.

I usually read non-fiction, history related material, however, I gave "Shadow of Reflection" by first time local (Baltimore, MD) author Albert W. Johnston a look see and I'm glad I did. The story is often very dark, the main character leads you down many lonely and disturbing paths, he is at times very selfish and immature and violent, while hiding a deeper soul, one that can care, can love, can succeed. The story will at times surprise you, disturb you. Some characters you'll care about, others not, why? The darker side of relationships and human nature are touched upon and the story will take you on an emotional roller coaster ride, will Joe find peace, love, happiness? Or will his tortured tormented soul just blow away with a hot humid Baltimore breeze? I found that I could not put the book down, I kept turning pages to see where the story led me and enjoyed the many surprises the author placed before me......Strong narrative paints a steamy, violent yet at tmes hopeful glimpse into the human condition. Nice job Albert on your first book, I look foward to reading more of your work.

Well written story about the darker side of life.

Hats off to Al Johnston. Growing up and living in Baltimore all my life, I can relate to the downfall of the main character in this book. Al captures the journey down the dark path in life, with easy to read, and well thought out chapters. I can't wait for him to write another one. Contratulations on your publishing debut.

It is hard to believe that other people read the same book. I picked up this book as a stocking stuffer for one of my kids. (Yeah, I still put things in their stockings - it's a family tradition.)

When I opened the book, I found a disjointed collection of often contradictory advice from a zillion different students instead of a cohesive text of single point of view or narrative. Barrons might make the test guides and other books, but they sure don't deserve to get your money twice!

I would like to share some of the unbelievable stupid things this book says:

"You don't need a printer., but it's very nice when you are doing a paper and you don't have to walk across campus at midnight in the cold to the library or the lab to print out."

However on the next line below it says:

"You want a printer and copier so you can copy somebody's notes."

Or how about my personal favorite written on the same page:

"You are already paying fees for a computer use. You have computers to use in the dorm, in labs, and in the library seven days a week. Why would I take my small desk space in my room when a computer is available during the day."

As a parent -- I WILL BE BUYING MY KIDS COMPUTERS. (Even if I have to do without something else.)

Last but not least, my wife almost died laughing when I read her this snippet from page 77, "It was really comforting that my mom made my bed."

I thought going to college was all about learning to be independent and an adult!

Honestly, if you want to prepare your kids for school, buy them a copy of College 101: The Book Your College Does Not Want You to Read Sure, it is a little dated now, but the advice is priceless. As a parent you will die laughing (in a good way) at some of the war stories the author tells. Author Guy Stevens has been in the trenches. He tells it like it is. He has an opinion, and he expresses it in a consistent manner. Oh and his book isn't published by Barrons. (Has anyone ever heard of The Back Alley Press?) The fact that the books is independently published, is reason enough to support it.

We wanted a book that would help our daughter prepare for her freshman year of school away from home, and this book worked. The content is helpful and its written in a low-key style with quotes from a number of different college students for an easy and compelling read. Our daughter was fascinated once she got started which meant she (rather than her mother and father) ended up doing a good deal of the thinking about her first year. That was a triumph. Finally, the authors' use of a wide variety of sources means there are also a wide variety of suggested strategies. That worked too--it reminded everyone in the family that even though the stakes seem high, there are lots of different ways for things to work out well for our daughter and us over the next four years.
