A Doorway to understanding Global Geographies.
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-18
I study Human Geography and for a long time I have been searching for a book such as this. The Geo-economic,political,social,cultural and environmental characteristics of global change are all explored and organised into 5 doorways. I found that the chapter on Geo-Politics was exceptionally good going deeply into the Cold War and the Welfare State. My enthusiasm for this text is not only from what it says but how it has said it. It is clearly written and provides a succinct commentary, making a very good book for anybody interested in Globalistation or for first year students studying it.

One of the most comprehensive texts on Sub-Saharan Africa.
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 1999-11-21
This is one of the most comprehensive books written onSub-Saharan Africa. It starts off with the spatial location of theregion and the physical aspects - Climate, Vegetation, Soils, and Drainage, that makes the region unique. The authors go on to discussing the human-environmental impacts, one of the most problematic of environmental activities in Sub-Saharan Africa. They discuss reasons for deforestation in Africa South of the Sahara, effects of forest degradation, and desertification a very real problem of desert encroachment that has turned productive lands in Sub-Saharan Africa into desert environments. One of the topics covered in this text that is absent in many textbooks is the Historical Background of Sub-Saharan Africa, especially when most of the old historical records are said to be "non-existent" because of the lack of a written language in the region. The authors have done a good job incorporating culture, conflict of culture and change in the face of cultural multiplicity of that exists in this region. Another important aspect of this book is the comprehensive coverage of gender and the roles of men and women in this part of the world. This book is interesting to read, it is informative and best of all, it is current.

I read this book and found it to be an excellent reminder that God does work in mysterious ways. I would and have recommended to people who are having a hard time in their live or who are unsure about their faith. A dear friend gave this book to me during a rough period of my life. It totally changed my mind about a lot of the negative things that happen in our life. There is definitely a reason things are happening to us and this book explains how wonderful God really is and that He can 'Make It Happen.'

Definitive History of the first Dora-9 Pilots in Action!
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2005-12-15
Wow!! This magnificent book by author Axel Urbanke chronicles the life and times of the Focke Wulf pilots of III/JG 54 and two associated gruppen of JG 26 in the 1944-45 timeframe. III/JG 54 was the first Luftwaffe unit to be supplied with the newly introduced Focke Wulf D-9 model, the long-nosed "Dora." III/JG 54 saw heavy action in the last years of the war, ceaselessly opposing Allied bomber raids. Their story, as such, is representative of all Luftwaffe pilots in the West.

Urbanke's book is military aviation history at its best! A labor of love, the author spent over 10 years researching the subject, tracking down and interviewing surviving Dora-9 pilots or their families, assembling photos, researching archives in Germany and abroad, etc.

The results of Urbanke's dedication is this 350-page gem. Everything about this book bespeaks quality - the in-depth research (interviews with 200+ pilots), hundreds of rare photos with detailed captions, ten gorgeous, fold-out color profiles by Jerry Crandall and Tom Tullis, detailed loss and victory lists - this book has it all.

Quality doesn't come cheap; my copy of the book cost $85.00 but it was money well spent. "Green Hearts" is a limited edition, very high quality book and its cover price reflects that.

If you're a serious Luftwaffe enthusiast, you'll love this book. Highly recommended!

Coleen Johnston has written a fine novel about subjects that interest many readers--the Revolutionary War, love, and in particular, weaving. Anyone who enjoys this craft will certainly find alot of interesting information in this novel about the Gairdens, a family founded by a coverlet weaver. Definitely a great read!

The Title is Misleading
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-20
This is an absolutely excellent book for the area it covers, but the title is misleading. It purports to cover the entire Northwest, when in fact it only covers a few counties in Oregon and Washington west of the Cascade Mountains. I'll keep the book because one of the counties covered is where I was born, and I'm already fairly familiar with the plants there, but I was looking for a book that would cover the whole Pacific Northwest, so I'm pretty disappointed. If I'd known before I bought it that the coverage was so limited, I wouldn't have bought it. Still, I gave it five stars, because for the area it covers (Lane County, Oregon, to just north of Seattle) it is probably the best book you can buy.
