Fantastic escape reading for men AND women!

This book brings to life it's characters and makes you want to meet them! Max is believeable and sexy, but my favorite character is Frannie. Unlike so many novels written by men, Frannnie is smart, funny, spunky, brave and won't let Max walk on her! She is a character to emulate! This book is a must read for both men and women! Full of action, you will find yourself cheering along Max as he fights to overcome the "bad guys!" It contains elements of today's political climate, which makes it very believeable! The author has done a terrific job on this one! I can't wait for the next installment!

This book is not only visually stunning but is great for those who are looking for, among other things, the top hotels, restuarants, and spas in Bali. Unlike other guide books, this one presents only the most important aspects of the island and its amenities so that you can decide whether to go, when to go, and where to go. If you are looking for a guide to the most luxurious Bali experience, this book seems to be the best!

Beluga whales and their babies

This is an excellent factual book about the birth, habitat and life of a beluga whale. The text is full of information stated in a simple and direct way that young readers would be able to read. The pictures are wonderful, although the actaul photograph of the baby beluga being born is one I would avoid in my elementary classroom. I know the students would think the photos are as adorable as I did! The table of contents, pronounciation keys and glossary are helpful for young students. The big print and bold face vocabulary words make this book perfect for an elementary classroom. The authentic photographs make this book perfect for any child interested in whales or aquariums. I think this is an excellent resource for young children. I love this book!!!

This book is as good as anything Shakespeare or Dickens or Tolstoi has ever written. It is a much under-appreciated classic of unusual erudition. Johnston creates complex, profound, hilarious characters in this novel, all with fascinating names like Giuseppi Opernocketti and Llewellan McQuilla. A profound satire of academia as we know it today. The only modern author that rivals J. M. Johnston is Daniel Pinkwater.

ONE OF MANY INDIAN WARS
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2003-04-30
This book number 8 in the Plainsmen series tells of the BATTLE OF THE POWDER RIVER AND THE BEGINNING OF THE GREAT SIOUX WAR OF 1876. In this book as in all of the other Plainsmen stories Frontier Scout Seamus Donegan leads as a guide General George Crook and his 2nd. and 3rd. Cavalry and a band of scouts and interpreters into the bloody battle. All of Johnstones books are very wordy and can sometimes lose me as I can not always understand what he is trying to tell me. But that does not mean he is not a good writer, it just means I should maybe use the dictionary more often.

The Book Buddies Manual is a user-friendly resource for teachers and tutors of beginning readers. The black-line masters in the back of the text are a great resource when starting your own program. The lesson plans are easy to follow and have a wealth of activities to accompany each lesson. The authors must be SO talented to create such an amazing manual! It is a must-have for all reading teachers!

A Hands-On Book
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2002-01-08
This is not a coffee-table book about Country Crafts. This is the go-to book for the hands-on craftsperson. Mr. Johnston trained as an architect, but worked as a sculptor. His book is packed with the practical information one needs to work with wood, clay, metals, stone and color (i.e., paints and dyes). In this book you will find recipes for mixing pottery glazes, instructions for making natural dyes, how to mix lime mortar, and what all those wood-working tools are for. (One of my favorite chapters is "How to Paint in Fresco"; not for the timid!)
The Book of Country Crafts came from Mr. Johnston's lifetime of experience working with materials to create beautiful objects.

A great book. An easy read about one small battle towards the end of Vietnam after many of the U.S. troops had already returned to the United States. Tells of a U.S. Marine Captain and an Army Major and how they made a difference in the outcome in Vietnam.
