I read this book a few years ago, and have used it in speeches in college. My reference to McDaniels in my next speech is to his patriotic example. This book is a must for anyone interested in POW life in North Vietnam. I would really like to meet McDaniels to thank him for his service.

i had a signed copy of this book, and have loaned it out, and can't find it. This man was my skipper on the U.S.S. Lexington in 1977-1978 and the toll that the war took out of him made him a great man to work for. The book only told of his early trials, but what occurred after, explained why this time in his life made him a great Naval Office

I have read and thoroughly enjoyed Howard Suttle's book and I can relate to all the things that happened to him during his driving career. If you like buses, then this book is a must read.

True stories of driving for the Big Dog along Route 66. Written in a freindly, come-on-along style that makes it a pleasure to travel the road with Howard Suttle. Humor, tragedy and a love of the road are reflected in each of the stories. For anyone who ever wanted to drive a bus, or take a cross-country trip while allowing someone else to do the driving this is a must read.

This book brought back fond memories of my childhood, growing up as a young boy in the South Bronx. Me and the rest of the gang used to let our creativity run wild - while boys in other neighborhoods were into professional wrestling and BB guns, we used to go antiquing in SOHO and sell baked goods at our little roadside stand.

Anyhoo, gotta run - these muffins won't bake themselves! :)

Ciao for now,

Petey

First, I must point out the error in the Amazon product details. This book is not for ages 4 to 8. As pointed out in the School Library Journal review, the readability level is for grades 6 and above. I'm enjoying reading it aloud to my 8 year old daughter, who is fascinated by the fact that there was a Brownies children magazine in 1920. This is an outstanding collection and a "must" for every child's bookshelf.

This is an excellent book on an important subject. I sincerely wish it was still around. Self-esteem and a positive self-concept for children of color, especially African-American children are still areas that need a lot of work. Our world is still consumed with an abundant amount of negative images and stereotypes of people of color. This book is wonderful in counteracting that, covering all areas of life; art, athletics, academics, social. It confronts the emotional needs of our children. Every home, school and library should have a collection of the stories and letters found in this book. I will certainly use it in my classroom. I wish I had the gift of prose so that I could properly give the type of review this book deserves. Not only is it appropriate for use as a tool in helping children to realize their self-worth, it's also a wonderful item for those who wish to collect African-American artifacts but cannot afford the more costly items. The book contains stories and poems written by known writers and by "ordinary" children of 1920-21. It also contains letters from "enquiring" minds. Again, it made me wish I could own the whole collection, not just the best of.

I admit that I am bias. Beverly is a beautiful black woman and serious business woman. It is her older work but very much worth locating. It has excellent health tips as well as guide to utilizing herbs to gain a healthy life style. It is not an autobiography yet she shares many of her memories as a model and adds personal touches of her life. It is well worth the time. It is one of my health bibles.

This book is a very good discertation on fly fishing for species other than trout. It covers warm water species, bass bluegill/sunfish, perch and crappie as well as other cool water species, like walleye and pike, and even includes catfish. The author covers each species in a seperate chapter. Covering items such as prefered habitat, spawning, water temperature, fishing methods, and fly recommendations. If you like to fly fish, but trout aren't readily available in your area, this book could give you some insight into fish you might not have considered as fly rod fish.

This book is a great place to start, or if you already have that is okay, in warmwater fly-fishing. The information is very helpful. A must for the angler who can't go to the trout stream every weekend and a local lake is much closer.

J. D. Fleeman has left us a hefty 2-volume set of incredible value to some people, but perhaps not to many. It's an extremely comprehensive listing of various editions of Johnson's works, both as sets and isolated volumes. The date range is from original editions when Johnson lived (18th C), up to recent times. Some of what is here is surprising - - such listings of Johnson's Dictionary in foreign languages, which initially caused me surprise (but were understandable with more thought).

I have used it on occasion in placing bids on eBay (it has helped me understand editions such as a 1970's facsimile reprint of the 1st edition of Johnson's Dictionary), as well as when buying 19th C editions of his books over the Internet, and helped take some of the guesswork out of what I was purchasing. It's told me more about some of the editions I already own. It has also helped me anser questions from visitors to my Johnson website.

I imagine that this set is very valuable to the specialist, but I imagine that even the specialists would prefer to borrow it from their local library than to buy it. While this is a monumental achievement, and deserves all five of the stars I've given it, at $460 for the 2 volumes together, I think most people's uses for this would be limited.

Expensive Necessity

Review Date: 2005-08-04
Scholarly books have become absurdly and prohibitively expensive. This volume, and its companion, vol. 2, covering the years 1760 to 1816, exemplify this unfortunate trend. However, occasionally, a book comes along that warrants, if not justifies, the expense. Such is the case here. Johnson studies has been blessed with excellent scholars and editors, commencing in its modern phase with the efforts of the Victorian GB Hill (whose 1905 edition of the Lives of the Poets still holds sway), and continuing majestically through he 20th century with the excellent Yale Johnson, the Yale treatment of the Boswell papers, Redford's splendid edition of Johnson's letters, and so on. Fleeman's magnificent contribution, however, stands forth even from this rich tradition.

The meticulous care that Fleeman has introduced into each entry is matched only by the monumental largeness of his his scope. These 2 volumes, which Fleeman's premature death unfortunately prevented his seeing through to publication, exemplify textual scholarship--an art undervalued in modern literary studies--at its Olympian height, and will remain a mainstay of reference for Johnson scholars for a very long time. Yes, they are absurdly and prohibitively expensive, but they are a must-have for the serious Johnson scholar.

A great ideas book!

Review Date: 2006-10-04
Big-Block Magic is recently published, 2006, and comes at a great time. Just when my creative thoughts were wondering what to do for lap and king sized quilts, Ms. Johnson-Srebro provides the answer. This book gives seven patterns and each pattern has three sizes provided therein - lap, wall and queen/king sized!

Along with the "how to read" the charts section, each quilt pattern has a "No-Fail" tip with it. The Basics section is a good review for the long-time quilter or a good place to start for the newbie. In this section, there are also "No-fail" tips along with "My Favorite Things". I love this as you never have too many tips and even if you new the tip, it may present a slightly different approach and give you a new idea. And once you have created your lap, wall or queen/king quilt, each pattern has two quilting designs for you to give your quilt the final touch.

Each pattern has easy to follow graphics of each step needed to create the quilt. It is all color-coordinated--the yardage and cutting charts to the actual sewing steps so you know exactly what piece goes where.

There is even a pillowcase pattern in standard, queen and king and an accent pillow pattern with NO ZIPPER NEEDED to provide your quilt a coordinated extra. This is a very simple but elegant accent pillow and one that everyone should try at least one. Who knows? You may want to make several more once you see how easy it is to make accent pillows.

The final pages have a photo gallery and the very last page is a resource listing and information about the stencils. You get all of this for a very reasonable price. This is one book that should be in every quilter's collection.

Fun book

The Biology Laboratory Manual by Guttman, Vodopich, Johnson, Raven, and Moore provides an easy to follow approach to introductory biology. It features many activities that can be completed on average between 2 and 3 hours. There are many photos and diagrams that are in full color, many pre-laboratory type questions, and a good amount of questions that are best answered during lab or after lab. This book is ideal for an advanced high school biology course or a freshman or sophomore college biology class. Unlike a fair amount of the laboratory texts out there, this one accompanies most biology books very well. Thus, the laboratory portion of class tends to blend very well with the lecture portion.

This book is like, the best!

I would like everyone to know that this book is super great. I was like so confused at first, but now everything is crystal clear. I learned that fertilization in a plant occurs in it's uterus and after gastrulation occurs the spores shoot out of the carpel and undergo a meiotic phase called the acrosomal stage. So like, if you're stumped about which bio book to get, you should totally get this one!

Excellent, well-researched book loaded with good references.

This book covers quantitative physiology under the particularly stressful conditions of exercise. It is divided into five basic sections: Exercise limitations, exercise biomechanics, cardiovascular responses, respiratory responses, and thermal responses. The author has obviously done a lot of research into the vast body of literature on mathematical modeling of physiological systems. When models are not covered in detail, he gives references to many sources.

As a biomedical engineer, I have used this book regularly to obtain such things as functions describing the relationship of exercise level and oxygen consumption and references to who has done mathematical models of the thermoregulatory system. This book should be on the shelf of anyone who is interested in quantitative physiology, or of engineers designing sports equipment or other similar biomedical devices.
