Knuth said, garbage in garbage out. These three volumes are absolutely treasure of statistics, forever. The excellent papers in the past 110 years are collected and introduced. Whatever for students or researchers, they are definitely valuable to be at hand.

[1] The original papers are attached. Do you remember Abel said, Read the masters', not their pupils'?
[2] For each important paper, there is an introduction written by the real experts of this domain.
[3] This is a real awesome book that leads you to overview the history of statistics.
[4] You can find a surprise of good price somewhere on campusi.com if you need all the three volumes.

volume covering breakthroughs in methodology and distribution theory
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-25
This volume is as praiseworthy as volume 1. However it covers a number of papers from the late 19th century and most of the twentieth century that dealt with distribution theory and statistical methodology rather than the foundational issues. Like volume 1 it was published in 1992 and includes an introduction by an expert that puts the article in contexts and explains why it is a breakthrough. All the articles are worthy of be designated as breakthrough seminal papers on the topic they cover. I will concentrate on my favorites to give the reader a flavor for the content. As with volume 1 I recommend this to any statistician or researcher interested in a deeper understanding of the history and key developments of statistics, a field developed primarily in the 20th Century.

The first paper in this collection is an article by Karl Pearson where his famous chi-square statistic is first introduced. Pearson's chi square was used by him as a way to evaluate the goodness of fit of a probability model to data. The chi square distribution that is the asymptotic distribution for Pearson's test statistic is one of the most important distributions in statistics. It is used in a variety of applications in biostatistics especially where contingency tables are involved and relationships between categorical or binary variables need to be tested.

The next paper is Gosset's (pen name Student) famous paper "The Probable Error of the Mean" published in 1908. This was the paper that guessed the central t distribution to be the exact sampling distribution of the t statistic used to estimate the mean of a distribution. Prior to Gosset's paper the standard normal distribution which is asymptotically correct for normally distributed samples was used. But Gosset dealt with small samples (perhaps in the range of 5 to 20) where the normal approximation is not good. Later R. A. Fisher mathematically proved the t distribution with n-1 degrees of freedom is the exact distribution for the t statistic from a sample of n independent identically distributed observations under the null hypothesis confirming Gosset's result.

Other papers among my favorites are Kolmogorov's 1933 paper on the empirical distribution function and the statistic that became known as the Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistic for goodness of fit testing based on the empirical distribution, the Kaplan and Meier paper of 1958 establishing a nonparametric estimator of the survival function based on right censored time to event data, D. R. Cox's 1972 paper on the proportional hazards model for survival functions, Box and Jenkins 1962 paper on adaptive optimization and stochastic control that spawned their book on time series monitoring and feedback control systems, Nelder and Wedderburn's paper in 1972 on generalized linear models that led to the software product GLIM and later to the application in another breakthrough paper (in volume III) by Liang and Zeger to longitudinal data, and last but certainly not least Efron's 1979 Annals of Statistics paper on the bootstrap and its relationship to the jackknife which spawned a multitude of applications utilizing bootstrap estimates of standard error, confidence intervals and the application of the bootstrap principle to do Monte Carlo bootstrap approximations in a wide variety of complex and previously intractable problems.

A thought-provoking, deep, intellectual and emotional play. Brilliant pyschology, truly. This play is amazing. The depth of exploration of the human mind, and the intricate connections between parents and children, and the reality of this play are genuinely stunning. He's a recluse living in Alaska, she's a runaway bride who can't understand why she left, or where she's going. She stumbles into his life, and together they tread through each other's pasts, trying to find out how to remain stable, grounded, and able to be called alive. I kid you not- read this play.

Intriguing and captivating play!

Kristin's debut novel is a stunning literary venture. The metaphors that bind this love story, that shock the senses, and stun ordinary lovers--can easily become a classic in our generation.

To know this author, as I do, her brillance and writing style contain elements that many long-time authors can only dream of achieving.

If you want to learn how excellent writers create characters, develop strong plots and transitional changes, all the while you devour this deeply moving and unusual love story--this is the book for your permanent library.

I predict the screen play will be a hit too!

Kristin Johnson captivates the reader through her realistic characterizations and compelling style. Butterfly Wings is a love story that explores the relationship between Mag, a stunning model, and Serge, a brilliant artist. Serge envelops Mag in his tantalizing cocoon, only to manipulate her, play games, and try to mold her into perfection. Both Meg and Serge undergo spiritual metamorphoses leading to self-revelations.

Johnson's story is a poignant, passionate pursuit of love that will truly entice and entertain readers. Butterfly Wings is a must-read for all romantics.

I absolutely loved this book!

Calvert's Gold - Book Review
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-02-25
The story in CALVERT'S GOLD, by Phyllis Johnson, gives a very accurate, detailed account of rural life in the 1920's and 1930's in the very historic Maryland county, celebrating its 350th anniversary this year. A reader can find humor in the story, may reminisce while reading about the Southern Maryland traditions, may want to try the old recipes, and may experience vicariously the peaceful life before televisions and computers. The book also makes a plea to save the small farms. This story highlights a way of life that is worth remembering.
CALVERT'S GOLD has all the "ingredients" for a worthwhile, real life movie that will appeal to viewers of all ages.

As a teacher, I would recommend using the story in Calvert's Gold, by Phyllis S. Johnson, as additional reading in literature classes or in history classes. It is interesting reading for old and
young. The writer uses great detail and explanation to help give the reader an understanding of the way life was on a small family farm in the late 1920's.

The Past No More

Review Date: 2008-03-26
Those readers who liked Calvert Gold, also by Phyllis S Johnson, will love Calvert, Remember Me. While Calvert Gold is nonfiction - a description of the bucolic, sometimes hard, and fast disappearing life on a tobacco farm in southern Maryland during the depression, Ms. Johnson's new book is a fictional treatment of the introduction of this still charming life style to two young ladies who have inherited property in this area. As they come to delight in their new home and its traditions, they also become aware of a new threat to this region and lifestyle - not the destruction of virgin woodlands and rich farmlands by greedy developers to clear the way for McMansions already taking place at an alarming rate - but the installation of gas mains and stations that are pushed by big business and insensitive government officials even though they present a great danger for people as well as property. The life of the two young ladies as conscientious school teachers with a deep commitment to their students is very realistically portrayed as Ms. Johnson comes from a long line of school teachers herself and knows whereof she speaks. While the book reveals a touching nostalgia for the past, it points out the dangers of the present to this beautiful county. The ending of the book is dramatic and all does not end well - but the memory of a wonderful and charming lifestyle remains.

CALVERT, REMEMBER ME, a new novel by Phyllis S. Johnson, has the kind of narrative and characters for a refreshing movie that will hold everyone's attention from the beginning to the very end. Most of the story takes place in Southern Maryland where the lifestyle can be contagious. The main characters are a very likable pair of erudite, vivacious young teachers and the action never dulls as they experience adventure that is both planned and surprising. Such a movie could be a delightful change from murder dramas and never ending war stories that seem to monopolize TV and movie theater screens.

During my daily jeopardizes as a Quality Engineer, several times I had faced with situations in which just the common sense based judgements would not be enough for assure myself on a decision which would necessarily imply in the expenditure of time and money it demands. For those who deal with Quality Inspection, anyone knows what does it means working out with tables whose original mathematical foundations behind them is a true challenge.

However, one will see through titles by Douglas C. Montgomery, Kennett & Zacks, Grant & Leavenworth and so forth that this book is always a standing point from where you have a thorough view of Sampling Plans, mainly those based on MIL-STD-105 whatever the version in which it is found. The book is particularly useful regarding this last one where the author works out interpretation of sampling plans based on AQL and related terms through the analysis of its mathematical modelling and practical use.

The other topics familiar to many other titles are also well worked but for sampling plans it is necessarily that sort of book anyone who is interested in to build up one's own private library on the subject must have in hands (or in the bookshelf).

I love anything that's a conspiracy. When I heard about Carmen Piper through a friend of mine, it sounded like a Da Vinci Code ripoff to me. But now that I've read it, I think it's even better than the Da Vinci Code since it deals more with my real life concerns regarding health and prescriptions. The FDA wields the power of the FBI in this book, and they use it to their full advantage. I don't wanna give a spoiler, but this book is definitely a page turner, with a cliffhanger at the end of each chapter. Would recommend to any conspiracy theory nut!
