Walter Payton was the model of what every player should be like, even in today's "me only" generation. Walter was a first class football player amd first class individual as well.

He is what other players should strive to be like, Walter broke the mold and still stands as the premiere football player of all time. Walter can not and will never be replaced, he represented what all of us should be like no matter what color we are or where we came from or anything!

A truly remarkable individual that went beyond being a great football player, Walter was a great person as well. If a person couldn't be inspired by what Walter Payton represented, they just couldn't be inspired with anything!

I named my son after his son, and my family will never forget watching #34 on the field on Sunday's. Walter is my all time hero and inspiration, and always will be.

A good book about a good man

This is a terrific book, especially for parents who want to show their sports-mad kids a real role model. The photos are wonderful, and the text describes the whole man, not just the football player. And he was as good a man as he was player, and there wasn't ever a better player.

Give this to a football-loving kid for Christmas, and try not to cry when you read it yourself.

A GREAT REMINDER OF A GREAT MAN.

"Sweetness: The Courage and Heart of Walter Payton" is a wonderful collection of quotes, stats, stories, and pictures illustrating the complete Payton. He was indeed one of the greatest running-backs of all time. What this book gives, that many don't, is a review of Walter's off-field perfomances. He was kind, caring, and loving to all. This book clearly shows that Walter was in all aspects.....a hero. This title is a must for all those who miss the headbands, the dives over the goal lines, the amazing runs, the jumping high fives, and a great man----SWEETNESS!

This set is tricky to find in a complete state. Most sets I've seen are missing the 4 part cardstock referee's screen. In fact, usually the first dozen listings on Amazon are just the World Book of Ansalon, shame on those sellers. Buyer Beware!

A complete Tales of the Lance box set contains:
* World Book of Ansalon (176 pages) * 4 part, tri-fold cardstock referee's screen * 3 fold-out maps * 16-page pull-apart cardstock book (includes 40 character cards, 40 fold-up characters, 55-card Talis deck and 3 pages of accessories).

very compelling Book about Big house and His legacy which has him as One of the winningest Coaches Ever in College Basketball. but this Book reflects on the struggle and Bridiging the gap socially and spiritually. Humor keeps things into perspective in the Book, but what Big House had to deal with in Jim Crow America,etc... is no laughing matter and this book pulls no punches, but it speaks directly about the game on the court and the game of life and so much else in between. very Powerful.

A fun read

Big House was a great coach - the fifth best in history of college basketball but more importantly he was a guy with a sense of values and a good sense of humor. He knows basketball as well as anyone in the country and has some candid comments about how to improve the game. But his real commitment was to the students he coached. He experienced the bitter bite of segregation - working for an HBCU called Winston Salem State - but his memoir is better than a rant - it is a reflection of his insight and integrity.

Allen is a masterful story teller! Every life is a story and stories have the power to impart valuable lessons. It is obvious that author Allen Johnson has carefully observed and reflected on the lives of people around him. In his book "This Side of Crazy," Allen has artfully crafted those stories for maximum impact and takes his readers on insightful and emotional journeys. This book will help anyone realize that the journey we experience is as rich as any story he might tell. The book is an easy read, but don't let this fool you. The lessons are profound, powerful and personal. Laugh, cry and learn...these stories could just as easily be your story or mine!

Inspiration and Survival

Review Date: 2002-07-17
A lot of useful inspiration and practical information from the world's spiritual and religious traditions has been brought together in this psychic survival guide for teenagers. With many quotes from both modern writers and sacred traditions, the focus is on learning to be strong in oneself and compassionate towards others, what Johnson calls being a spiritual warrior. The tools and insights are directed toward the transition from childhood to adulthood - learning to be an independent person in the world. Johnson calls this time, which people are called upon to face in their teens and early twenties, the thundering years. Native American wisdom is used as a principle guide, but many sources of wisdom are brought in - Christian, Buddhist, Sufi, modern psychological. Young people are encouraged to live creative lives and to tells their stories. A cornucopia of techniques for living a vital life and dealing with its challenges are presented - everything from meditation, working with dreams, drumming, and various forms of exercise to helping others, connecting with nature, and creating rituals to mark the changes in one's life. Many useful books, resources, and Web sites are included at the end of each chapter. As most topics have to be dealt with relatively briefly, these references allow readers to delve more deeply into areas which they are drawn to. This is an inspiring guide and companion, not only for young people, but anyone hoping to ride the waves of modern life more effectively, and enjoy the ride.

I am so excited to see a book available to teens that confirms for them....and for us their parents, that their loud confusion, creative depressions, outbursts of truth and pain, all have such an important place in the process that is life.

Having waited until mid-life to honor the journey, I look forward to the process found in this book assisting society, teen by teen, person by person,in honoring our place here, by connecting us with the planet we are on and the energy we all share. I encourage teens every where to read up........and Thunder On!!!!!!!!!!!

This is an excellent book and anyone with an interest in the Viet Nam War should read it. The events of July and August 1964 are thoroughly examined and analyzed step by step. There are interviews with many of the people who were involved in the incident on both sides. It has a good technical discussion of the military equipment(ships and radar/sonar systems) that greatly contributes to an understanding of what happened on those "dark and stormy nights". This is definitely the best book about the Tonkin Gulf incident. The author is a History Professor at Clemson University and I had the priviledge of taking his Vietnam War and Modern Military History courses back in 1993. He told our class that he was writing a book about the Tonkin Gulf incident so it was great to finally read it after all these years.

Sometimes the details that matter aren't captured on videotape and broadcast around the world, like more recent events in the year 2001. What history doesn't have to show what was going on is a picture of how things were set up for this book. "Around noon on August 2, at the White House, President Johnson discussed the American response to the August 2 incident with Secretary Rusk, George Ball, Cyrus Vance, and Tom Hughes of the State Department; General Wheeler; Colonel Ralph Steakley of the Joint Staff; and Winston Cornelius of the CIA. At this meeting the president not only confirmed the decision that sent the Maddox back into the Gulf of Tonkin along with the Turner Joy, he authorized the continuation of OPLAN 34A raids (definitely the one scheduled for the night of August 3-4, and perhaps also those for the night of August 4-5; the procedure of waiting for the results of each raid to be evaluated, before approval of the next was initiated . . . would not have been practiced when there were to be raids on consecutive nights)." (pp. 103-4).

The amount of detail in this book could support a view that secret operations are those things which are not revealed in order to create the greatest spin in the direction of the psychological warfare advantage desired by whoever is keeping the secrets. To get a full appreciation of the kind of restraint which the American government displayed in this incident, the whole picture should be compared to how well the participants in World War II responded to the order given by the president in August, 1945 (a mere 19 years before the Tonkin incident) not to drop any more atomic bombs on people whose government exhibited any hostility toward military activities directed by the United States of America. President Truman's order was followed by massive conventional bombing, much as the history of American bombing in Vietnam shows how long a superpower can maintain a campaign of destruction against anyone who knows the truth about something which is supposed to be secret. This book shows great deference to the feelings of the anonymous secret operations experts who would never say anything that wasn't in the best interests of the powers that be. "Escalation" is an understatement for the overt actions taken against North Vietnam in August, 1964. Adopting a bombing routine as a conditioned response to false accusations in anticipation of making the bombing a regular routine, in the absence of any debate on why things happened as they did, was the real policy. Even now, most people who ought to know better are pretending that a lot of things revealed in this book are still secret. What people don't believe now is the preamble to the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, which stated that the United States was going to be maintaining peace there, where it had no territoreal, military, or political ambitions. My ambition was to get the Combat Infantryman's Badge without getting killed, so I could be the CIB who failed to agree with whoever thought this ought to be. Check the facts in this book for a truly tortured bit of not being able to see a forest because the treehouse doesn't have any windows, and the trap door in the floor is closed.

Another manufactured crisis.

Review Date: 2000-03-27
This excellent book demonstrates that the Gulf of Tonkin "incident" was not really an incident at all. It explains in detail the events that lead up to the Gulf of Tonkin resolution and the escaltion of the war that followed. My only complaint is that the author says that the Gulf of Tonkin incident was based on a "misunderstanding" and not "knowingly faked." Even if that is true, the fact remains that it was used as a convenient excuse to escelate war. In addition, the fact that there was no effort on the part of the government to determine the facts behind the Tonkin incident demonstrates that the government wanted war, and were just looking for the right excuse.

I highly recommend reading these classic stories from the original Marvel 80 issue run. Bob Budiansky is a great writer, and some of these early stories really show off his creative talent. The art is not bad, particularly the cover art for issue #9. Also, this compilation shows us the first appearance and origin of Circuit Breaker, one of the most interesting comic book characters of all time!

reprints issues 7-12, this is volume 2 of 14 that reprints all 80 issues of the Marvel comics transformers comic from the 80's.

I'm not going to bother explaining the story since amazon has it right there already, but what I can do is explain that this book has held up exteremly well over the years, so many books feel dated and there are little things here that are very 80's but the stories hold up, and i might say they may be better than the cartoons, much liek the G.I Joe comics of the same time and publisher, they were not held back as badly as TV shows were, not to say there is sex and lots of blood here, no these are very child safe issues, but they just seem a little better written, and that's saying something since i loved the old cartoon and toys.

I wish i could have got the original issues but they cost $10 or more for many issues, the cost of one trade here, it's a real good deal and i think old fans will love it, i did, but also new fans could be made, this is the best way to hook a new fan, while cartoon animation can suffer more over time these don't, so maybe you will want to grab a copy for yourself and maybe your kid or a friend, and i bet you will be buying all 14 volumes before it's over...with these stories, there is more than meets the eye.

Karen Johnson was my psychiatrist for a number of years, beginning just as this book was coming out. She walks the walk as well as she talks the talk in this book. She treats patients like responsible adults, not helpless children; and she believes that people who have "emotional problems" can discover from within the ways to solve the problems. This book is extraordinary in that is is very simply written, with a minimum of medical jargon and no intellectual superiority at all; and the material is presented very directly. It's almost an istruction book on how to create yourself emotionally healthy again. I think a revised version is due; lots of research has come out since 1991.

A Wonderful Resource for Women and Those Who Care for Them
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1999-06-16
The approach to psychological care for women, is where Johnson and Ferguson diverge from much of the past literature. Like me, they know a woman's experience is different from a man's by virtue of their differing genders. Women's concerns are not dismissed, discounted, trivialized, marginalized, or described/interpreted from an exclusively male perspective. The authors acknowledge and affirm that many women understand why they are not happy with their lives. They recommend this as a valid starting point for the work a client and therapist do together.

Wow!! A Book by a Woman, about Women
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 1999-08-14
This wonderful text really describes the unhappiness so many women feel. The good news is, that most of our feelings have more to do with the way we learned to cope within a society or environment that is not geared to serving our needs, rather than due to some personal flaw of ours. This book may also help us to wean off the awful habit of collecting too many self-help books, because it encourages trust in our inner wisdom. As a woman who has made it a personal project to enlighten women who are suffering in 12-step based substance abuse programs, because such programs often reinforce our self-doubt, this text is a fantastic part of the solution!!! Imagine trusting ourselves once and for all, instead of the systems, programs, doctors, mates, etc. that we had more faith in than in ourselves! Thank you Karen Johnson, for this very liberating work!

Our church has started doing regular "treasure hunts" & we bring our kids along! What amazing testimonies come from this simple evangelism technique! It is easy to read, the technique is simple, but the impact is monumental. I would recommend this book to any Christian, especially the ones who are HUNGRY for more!
