For Colonial America:
I'm a history NUT, and this one feeds the addiction well. It came with me on a lengthy trip recently and was pretty much my guide throughout. Excellent for finding the right B&Bs and unique Colonial accommodations that I wanted.

We take trips by car every summer on the east coast, and try to work in as much education as we can for the kids, while still keeping it entertaining for me and my wife! For our trip to Williamsburg this year, we had a hard time choosing a guide, but we took this book with us along with our maps and a more general guide to Virginia. We were suprised to find that Clint Johnson's book provided all the general information we needed, along with things that weren't in the regular guide. It was a great resource for recommendations on places to stay and eat during our trip, that were really the type of authentic places we were looking for. It's also full of color photographs. We highly recommend it for anyone looking for a thorough companion on a trip to Williamsburg.

I recently read this book and only wish I had more time and money to travel! The author is very detailed about so many different sites, even some lesser known locations of great historical significance that I had never been aware of. I have seen other books specifically about Rev. War sites, but this book goes much further back in time with many colonial and pre-rev. war sites, such as the Lost Colony at the North Carolina coast. Another thing I like is that when listing nearby lodging, the author rarely mentions the average modern hotel chains, but instead lists the small bed & breakfasts or country inns that best invoke the mood and feel of the time period of the specific historic site that they are near. This is a great way to travel. I would highly recommend this book to history buffs out there planning their next vacation/historical tour.

This book is excelent because there's reviews of calculus, linear algebra and all sort of classical numerical methods needed to understand the finite element method. Moreover, the authors try and succed in giving a clear explanation of many applications of the method.

Well, a must of numerical analysis that every scientific searchers and engineers must own !!!

An excellent book

Great book to learn the fundamentals of finite element methods (FEM). The authors combine both rigor and simplicity in their presentation of the FEM as a means of numerically solving a wide variety of partial differential equations. Highly recommended for engineers--especially those who have been taught FEM using the traditional "structural mechanics" approach.

Excellent review of Hertzian and Non-Hertzian Contact problems. I highly recommend this book for those who are having their first contact with the subject. Grad students will find it useful and clear, but I'm not sure that undergrads will have an easy time handling the book, or the subject, for that matter.

This classic text is an indispensible resource for any engineer concerned with contact mechanics. It is very well-written and covers many phenomena. Some may find portions of the book to be too theoretical or mathematically based. However, the subject is inherently difficult. A watered-down presentation would probably not suffice. If your willing to do the work, the book will reward you with deep insight and understanding into its subject matter.

A "Must Have" For A Family Library

When I was in the eighth grade, my counselor suggested "The Creation" as a selection for me to read in the UIL Oral Reading competition. I didn't win the competition, but I fell in love with the poetry of James Weldon Johnson. I was delighted to see a quality picture-book version of this colorful, winning account of the creation story. Perhaps the most wonderful thing about Johnson's approach is that he makes God appear "personal" rather than "human". His poetry seems to share God's heart, and captivates the reader and listener alike. The story-telling nature of his poems remind me of Rudyard Kipling's "Just So Stories", which I also treasure. I highly recommend this book.

I teach PreK/K Sunday School. I found this book at the library and what a find it was!! It provided a wonderful visual inspiration as a stimulus for the introduction of our Creation unit. We combined classes and set up a campfire setting and began in the dark, just as the book does. As I read with great intonnations, the other teacher reenacted each scene with props and materials. We also gave the children the opportunity to use the materials to reenact this beautiful, lyrical, and inspirational story. We completed our lesson with snacks based on the story. It is truly a spiritually moving book that creates its own majestry, in the beauty of the illustrations and the strength of the text!!! It is a must have for a home and church library!!!

A JOYFUL RENDITION OF JOHNSON'S POEM

Review Date: 2005-08-04

As many know, James Weldon Johnson's splendid word poem based on the creation became the throbbing, joyful musical "God's Trombones."

As illustrated by James E. Ransome, this book is a grateful rendering of that verse brilliantly brought to life by oil paintings that reflect the spirit of the text.

Capturing the imagery and rhythm of southern black sermons in the mid 1800's the words ring with the regional cadences of folk stories. Seldom have words and illustrations complemented each other more.

I wish I had found this little gem before starting rotations. It is relatively compact, and has most (ie, not eye section) common conditions presented extremely well. It describes the presentation (and sometimes, epidemiology), evaluation (to include PE, labs AND ddxs), and the treatment modalities so well, that I find myself using this book at least 4-5 times a day! I've even bought several copies to give as gifts!

A Superb Synthesis
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-06
Although there are a lot of books out there about D-Day and the German Atlantic Wall defenses, Stephen J. Zaloga's D-Day Fortifications in Normandy is a welcome addition. As usual, Zaloga is able to synthesize a great deal of useful information about a well-known subject and still produce a book that has insightful and original material. Zaloga has mined the best available English, German and French sources and these are listed in an excellent 2-page bibliography. Overall, this volume is one of the best of Osprey's Fortress series. I have been to Normandy and seen many of the fortifications that Zaloga writes about, yet I still managed to learn new facts about them in this volume.

Zaloga begins the volume with a well-written summary of the design and development of the German army and navy coastal defenses in Normandy. He manages to include a number of interesting facts, including nice-to-know items like the cost of construction. The next section deals with the actual defenses in detail, including a table that lists all strongpoints on the five D-Day beaches and another table that lists all artillery units in range of the beaches. Zaloga also provides great detail on the garrison, including mentioning individual German commanders in various bunkers. The final section on the defenses on D-Day, which covers beach-by-beach, is superb. Throughout, the volume is enhanced with an excellent mix of B/W photos from 1944 and modern color photos. Zaloga also provides excellent detailed color maps for each beach sector, which depict all the key German defenses. The color plates are also very good, depicting various types of German coastal bunkers. Overall, this volume delivers a great deal of well-packaged information for its small size.

The only item that I would disagree with is his assessment that, "the German defenses quickly failed when assaulted by Allied forces on D-Day." It is currently in vogue among many military historians to deride fixed fortifications like the Atlantic Wall as a `white elephant,' but this ignores their intended purpose. Although Rommel hoped to defeat the invasion on the beaches, it was the reserve troops who were supposed to deliver the decisive blow; the coastal defenses were merely intended to delay and disrupt the invaders long enough for the German reserves to deploy. As Zaloga notes, thirty Germans in WN 62 on Omaha Beach were able to inflict hundreds of casualties on the US 1st Infantry Division and to hold out for over six hours. In the British sector, the Hillman bunker complex prevented the British from getting into Caen on D-Day. By and large, the German beach defenses did their job admirably, inflicting several thousand casualties on the Allies and preventing the Allies from reaching many of their D-Day objectives. It was the German C2 errors that prevented a rapid and decisive commitment of mobile reserves that led to failure, not the concept of fixed fortifications. Furthermore, critics of the German Atlantic Wall rarely make any effort to suggest plausible alternatives for a resource-strapped Germany in 1944. The German defenses in Normandy were a good example of `economy of force' and not only were they useful on D-Day, but they helped to slow the Allied drive to capture ports like Cherbourg weeks after the invasion.

I've had a lot of challenges to my faith lately, and Barbara Johnson's books never cease to leave me laughing and encouraged; she is a huge blessing from the Lord! I would highly recommend this book - and all of her others as well - to those needing a laugh to start the day or to keep you going whenever. (I use this book as a devotional in the morning over breakfast.)
God is good, and that will never change; life can be very challenging, though, and reminders of God's goodness through humor and loving thoughts can be a big boost to start the day with. Highly recommended!

This is a fantastic book and should be a part of every fourth and fifth grade classroom. The story gives a soul stirring look at life for a minority in the late 1800's in such a way that children can relate to the emotions experienced and actions taken. The story shows how even a child can respond to challenge prejudice and unfair bias in a mature way. It would also be a great introduction to a unit on poetry.

A Polish master of horror
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2006-10-15
Great horror story writers have a unique imaginative inner vision that distinguishes them from other writers. Stories by Poe, Lovecraft, Arthur Machen, and W. H. Hodgson could have come only from them. Stefan Grabinski is one of the great ones. His work reflects bizarre personal obsessions that recur throughout his tales: the metaphysical meaning of fire; trains as a symbol of the vast, implacable power that machines give man over his surroundings and also of man's relentless journey to who knows where; strange sexual phantoms that emerge from either unplumbed dimensions or from man's own twisted pshyche. These stories are gripping, haunting, and have the power to pull you into Grabinski's warped but somehow universal reality and to keep a part of you there long after you have turned the last page and read the last word. As with the other great horror story writers, Grabinski's inner demons make a connection with each of his reader's inner demons and create an indelible impression.

My favorite of the stories in the collection is "Fumes", but the others are all strangely great and compelling as well. Two other exquisite Grabinski tales are unfortunately not in this book. However, English translations of "The Dark Hamlet" can be found in "The Dedalus Book of Polish Fantasy", and "The White Wyrak" can be found in "100 Creepy Little Tales". I look forward to the day when all of Grabinski's horror shorts are available in English translation.

Grabinski - On par with Poe and Other Dark Masters

Review Date: 2008-02-17
I read this book in an evening. The stories are intoxicating, grim, beautiful and pensive. Grabinski's world is filled with foreboding, the sensual one step away from the macabre. For me, Dedalus continues to be the most reliable source of the ghoulish and supernatural in literary European fiction. This book is its own reward. (However...I seem to get a little sad after finishing a great read - story collections like this are few and far between. Each story is worth a second, if not a third, fourth or fifth read.)

As for the author: Stefan Grabinski was relatively unknown in his native land, fantasy writing at the beginning of the 20th century was not especially popular amongst the Polish reading public. He died in near obscurity. Thankfully, his works have been revisited by a new generation of readers. Roman Polanski, the controversial filmmaker has been said to be inspired by the Grabinski' horror style. Stanislaw Lem, the great Polish sci-fi author is a big fan of his works.

Reading through this collection, you might see the world with Grabinski-esque glasses - I don't think I'll be able to look at trains, snow drifts, empty houses and watchmakers in the same light. (I also recommend the story collections of Bruno Schulz, they are very comparable to Grabinski's work.)

Once again, Dedalus delivers.

One of the great names of european fantasy & the absurd
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2002-07-23
For everyone interested in fantasy in its purest state this is a gemm. This anthology mixes the many themes that cross the polish author's short stories. The pure horror, the ghost story, the surrealist (before its time), really erotic images, all of this with just enough hints of a certain modernism or post-modern that rends the stories an extra quality.

It's a must and will certainly fill a gap on fantasy literature.

The train stories are just amazing - This guy wrote one collection of stories just around trains he worked with the modern concept of speed as a moto for the future society which would be obliterated by it... I wonder if he didn't just get it right...
