More than just Black American History, but a huge chunk of American history in general. So many contributions and historic figures rarely mentioned in the average classroom. Not even during "Black History Month". An amazing collection of forgotten events that greatly impacted this nation. Should be drawn upon for reference by every author of any U.S. history textbook. Vital information to our nation's past.

While reading the February 1999 edition of American Legacy magazine, I came across an article titled "Essential Black Books: A Top-100 List". Of course, Before The Mayflower was on that list. I remembered ,as a child, that my father had this book in his collection and the effect it had on me as I merely skimmed the pages at that time. Now that I am grown, I cannot wait to experience this book again and to share it with my daughter.

The true-life testimony of former Motor Racing Outreach chaplain Dale Beaver, Before the Thunder Rolls: Devotions for NASCAR Fans is part retrospective memoir, part devotional. Beaver offers spiritual insights, as well as enthralling true anecdotes about individual races and crew members including Dale Jarrett, Ward Burton, Tony Stewart, Ryan Newman, Jimmy Spencer and more. "The electricity in the race day air is more than addictive - it is downright hypnotic! Typically I rise early on those mornings to gather a group of television production workers for a predawn devotion and prayer service... For a few moments we recognize God's presence with us, pray for each other, and read a portion of Holy Scripture." 'Pit Notes' at the close of each chapter ask the reader hard questions and offer ways in which to open one's soul more fully to God. An abiding expression of deepest faith, and also a respectful tribute to the many people who make NASCAR possible.

Pastor Dale Beaver has done an excellent job of revealing the insights of Jesus, with a fans point of view, in every day life applications as related to NASCAR and the many personalities involved in it.
The Bible references are a great help and provide great understanding and meaning to God's Word. I am sorry that it is limited to twenty-five short chapters (days). I am sure he has some great stories to relate to with his sermons.

Dale Beaver is an incredibly gifted storyteller. He has a special "down home" way of tying real life to the nuts and bolts of God's message and will for us. "Before the Thunder Rolls" uses NASCAR racing as a metaphor to explain biblical teaching like no other book. It's an eye-opener for anyone in racing -- from the stars in the driver's seats, to the teams in race shops and the loyal fans in the stands who hear "that" thunder streaking by at 200 miles per hour. A must read for anyone seeking real power.

Great Stories form a Bus Driver on the Road!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-20
From Foreword:

"The time has come for the over-the-road bus driver of America to have a few moments in the sun. Howard Suttle has lived the life, written the words and drawn the pictures that will do just that. Howard did it all for Greyhound, our most famous bus company, on U.S. Highway 66, our most famous highway. His stories range from small laughs to huge tragedies. They all say much about buses and the people who drive and ride them, but also much about the human condition and spirit.
- Jim Lehrer, Host of 'The News Hour' on PBS"

Sample stories:

Meeting My Future Wife, The Application, Now We Start Driving, The Christmas Tree, Gunnin' for Romeo, One Thousand Cows, The Vanishing Vodka, & The Cricket Invasion.

From Preface:

"It was 1951, only a few months after starting my driving career of 28 years with Greyhound. As I sat at road-side rest stop, having coffee and telling a fellow driver about some incident that happened on old Route 66, he told me that I should keep notes and someday, I might want to write a book. ...

Well, it seems to me now that this little conversation took place only a short time ago; but, as I write this, it seems kind of odd that I am now, indeed, 66 years of age. Up until this time, I have been very uninterested in attempting such a thing. But, after looking back down the road two and a half million miles, I have decided to share some of these true stories. .....

I've seen every emotion displayed that's humanly possible: temper, rage, jealousy, selfishness, greed. Some were brought on by drunkeness, drugs, and other misfortunes of the human spirit. The one emotion I would like to acknowledge far above all the rest is a four-letter word called 'love.' It is so mysterious that it simply cannot be explained by an old ex-bus driver. Still, I would like to thank all of the people whom I have seen display it so freely back over the years." - Howard Suttle

True stories of driving for the Big Dog along Route 66. Written in a freindly, come-on-along style that makes it a pleasure to travel the road with Howard Suttle. Humor, tragedy and a love of the road are reflected in each of the stories. For anyone who ever wanted to drive a bus, or take a cross-country trip while allowing someone else to do the driving this is a must read.

Berber is an orphaned lamb who thinks he is 'human" because his adoptive-mother is human and has white hair just like his wool coat. Berber: A Lamb's Tale is an utterly charming and original story told from Berber's point-of-view and details his many escapades with the other farm creatures. Margaret Johnson, drawing upon her many years of raising all manner of animals, has written an entertaining, inspiring, highly recommended story for young readers that is enhanced throughout with full-color illustrations.

I absolutely loved this book. It is a great story for children, but one that the adults will love to read to them. (and after they go to bed read it to themselves). Margaret clearly loves and understands animals, and has a lot to share about them. Especially enjoyable is how she tells the story from the lamb's view, and you know, I think she did know exactly what the lamb was thinking. It's a great story with a great message and I hope that many more people have a chance to read it. ADD IT TO YOUR SHOPPING CART!

This translation, combined with the formatting used in it, is so natural in its flow, you feel you are hearing a first person account of events occuring yesterday. The Messianic terms are both factual and illuminating, bringing the reader to a clearer view of the Jewishness of the Bible and the early church. I highly reccommend this edition - you won't be reading from a schedule, but captivated - unable to put it down. You will be blessed.

It is a pleasure to read this book. It has a comfortable feel as you read the Bible in a way that places you back in the origional context. Messianic terminology conveys the origional meaning of the words. I have found this good news to be comfortable, smooth reading that brings me into the context of my Jewish people.
A book like this is very much needed to bring us back to a more accurate translation of the scriptures. A translation that has not been compromised by 2000 years of a culture foreign to the Jewish people. As a Jewish person I recommend this book.

Excellent Messianic Edition!

Finally for Messianics there is a version which is literal in translation, based on a Majority Text, in Modern English, and is light in it's usage of Hebrew and Aramaic names, making for easy reading for devotions and study. The inclusion of the Psalms, Proverbs, as well as the appendix with Glossary, Prophecies, Parallel's between Moses and Yeshua, and the Maps- with alternative locations for Abraham's Ur, routes of the Exodus from Egypt, and Eretz-Israel in the 1st century, add significantly to the value of the translation.

Great guitar tab book, with a cd that has fast and slow, Really fun and mostly easy to play, The tunings really low so unless you have a bariton guitar the strings will be extremely loose tuned down that low so I'd suggest just using drop D.

Ah, the memories. My first time hearing "Aerials." The song immediately took hold of me, immersing me in a world of heavy, melodic, moving guitar riffs and inspiring lyrics. I had to learn to play it. I searched and searched the internet, and finally came upon the correct guitar tabs for the song. If I had only purchased this book before then...

Needless to say, this book is great. It provides the tabs as well as the music for twelve of System's most popular songs, including hits like "Chop Suey!" and "Sugar." An average of six pages are devoted to each song, making the descriptions of the songs that populate the pages incredibly detailed. A demo CD is even included, in which the various parts of every song listed are played, both up to speed and slowly, so that you know exactly what a song's chorus is supposed to sound like, or how fast the intro riff is played. A basic knowledge of tabs is required, but the purchase is well worth the money. If you're looking to learn how to play some of SoaD's songs, look no further.

Best RMNP Birdfinding Guide Available

Review Date: 2006-01-08
As a seasoned world birder with a very extensive birding library, I have purchased dozens of birdfinding guides to regions, countries, states, cities, parks and refuges, and local areas. Scott Roederer's book ranks among the very best birdfinding guides available. I purchased it prior to a trip to RMNP in 2003 and used it to successfully find a number of specialty species missing from my ABA Area and Colorado lists. Scott's book is sort of like a Lane/ABA Birdfinding Guide, but better. Since RMNP is large and possesses many different habitats, Scott has divided the park into about eight areas and provided thorough birdfinding directions for each of these areas. He uses easy-to-follow directions and strategies for locating not only specialty species, but the more common western birds as well. This book is easily used while driving your car since Scott has provided mileages (from various start points) using your trip odometer and bird species names in boldface. The same goes for use when hiking along trails. This book is directed toward both casual and serious birders who want to easily locate their target birds in a reasonable period of time while enjoying the beauty of RMNP. My main target birds for my all too brief trip to RMNP were the Brown-capped Rosy Finch, Williamson's Sapsucker, and Three-toed Woodpecker. Using Scott's directions and strategies for avoiding the crowds, I easily found the sapsucker and woodpecker on my first try at the Endovalley picnic area and the rosy finch along Trail Ridge Road at the Lava Cliffs parking area. The Lava Cliffs parking area is normally crammed full of tourists and birding is difficult or impossible. Scott suggested arriving at dawn before the other tourists were up and about and this strategy worked brilliantly. I had the entire parking area to myself and within minutes had several Brown-capped Rosy Finches land on the retaining wall about several meters from me. I'm looking forward to using this book again on my next trip to RMNP.

This summer while stopped at an overlook on Trail Ridge Rd. in Rocky Mountain National Park, we spoke with a Park Ranger who had Scott Roederer's Birding Rocky Mountain National Park book in her vehicle. She told us that Scott's book was the best book on birding in RMNP. She uses it as a reference for park visitors who have questions about different birds and where to find them. It also is very well illustrated. I would definitely recommend this book for birders who visit this magnificent Park.

Rocky Mountain Birder's Bible

As first time visitors to Rocky Mountain Park, we purchased Scott Roederer's Birding Rocky Mountain National Park in the park bookstore, but we wish we had had it to study beforehand. This guide not only focuses on the best locations for specific birds, but also provides careful directions (complete with odometer readings!) to trailheads that go well beyond the general maps available. We were also grateful for his strategies for avoiding the summer crowds, including when to arrive at specific trails and the order in which to bird them. Add to all of this Scott's warm, lucid style spiced with birding anecdotes that we can all relate to, and you get a bible for birding Rocky. Although we are certain that birding the park with Scott would have been the supreme experience, carrying his book in a hip pocket is the next best thing!

My child has really enjoyed "reading" this book along with me! Although my twenty month old already knows most of her body parts, she has fun naming and picking them out on Blue. The illustrations are simple, yet interesting and the part of Blue that you are to name dominates the picture to give your child a "clue" as to which body part to name. This is a great way for children to learn sequencing as they wash each of their body parts while following along in the book. This is sure to be a favorite!

Great Introduction

Review Date: 2007-07-18
This book provides an introduction to the ecology of northeastern bogs. Johnson, the Vermont state naturalist, has a particular affinity for bogs and the unique flora and fauna found in them. In this book, he explains the different types of bogs, how they are formed, and what forms of life are typical in and around them. After a general introduction to the ecology of bogs, he provides separate chapters for sphagnum mosses, carnivorous plants, orchids, sedges and heaths, insects, fish, amphibians and reptiles, birds, and mammals. He also discusses some current issues concerning bogs, such as peat mining and conservation. End material includes an annotated list of northeastern bogs with public access, and checklists of bog birds and other animals. The book is illustrated with black-and-white photographs, drawings, and maps and includes an index.

As a beginning naturalist, I found the book highly informative. I found Johnson's explanations of how bogs are formed to be extremely interesting because of the implications for bog ecology. The text is written for general readers and assumes no specialist expertise, yet it is detailed enough to be useful for experienced naturalists or professionals.

I bought Bogs of the Northeast because I grow carnivorous plants (CP) and am always interested in learning about one of their more common natural habitats. I was not disappointed; it includes a section on CP with some satiating color photos. Also included are an explanation of how bogs are formed, discussion of bog types, descriptions of plant and animal species found in bogs, a section devoted to Sphagnum moss (helpful to me as a CP grower), a section on native terrestrial orchids, etc. In the back there is a listing of easily accessible bogs in the Northeast.

Keep in mind that this book covers only bogs in the New England region of the United States. Fortunately, bogs similar to those described can be found throughout North America.

I have but one gripe: there are not many color photographs! Those included, however, are beautiful and I wish there were more.

All in all, it is a wonderful book for those who want to learn more about bogs!

Edit: As to my use of 'satiating' to describe this book's color photos...it is admittedly a slight exaggeration. 'Good' or 'nice' or 'detailed' would have been more appropriate. In case you don't know, 'satiating' means 'satisfying in excess'. For example, a meal that gives you a tummy ache would be satiating--that is, satisfying in excess. So, would 'satisfying' have perhaps been a better choice? No, because as my review later indicates, the photos are not at all satisfying. In fact, the book could have been improved considerably with a lot more (or, come to think of it, improved slightly with a few more). Then why did I use 'satiating'? Why do I not change it now? Because 'satiating' is the only thing this sad review has going for it.

Brian is so excited when his parents buy him a pet bird. Everyone is amazed when he teaches it how to talk. When his pesky big brother leaves the door open though, the bird flies out. While Brian's visual impairment plays a big part in the action of the story, it certainly isn't the focus of this charming book. This book acts as a great way to introduce children to diversity.

Brian's Bird: Beautiful Story & Images

Review Date: 2000-04-13
Brian's Bird is a wonderfully written and beautifully illustrated picture book. Author Patricia Davis tells a simple direct story while creating many opportunities for visual images. Layne Johnson's striking and colorful photo-like pictures jump to life off the page.

This story of a blind boy who delights in his new pet parakeet is ideal for young readers. The book treats Brian's blindness in a positive manner. The scene in which he uses his sense of touch to solve the mystery of his birthday present gives young readers the opportunity to gain understanding of the special skills of a blind person. The description of how the bird's feet feel on Brian's finger is delightful.

Brian exhibits patience and persistence in teaching his bird. There is humor in the story, as when Brian hears someone calling his name, only to realize it is the bird. Once again, the author highlights the use of an alternate sense.

Brian's brother presents challenges for Brian from the opening pages of the book. Indeed, his brother's actions lead to the bird's flight from the house. The boys work together to solve the problem and sibling teamwork wins the day.

The book presents many opportunities for an adult reading this story to a young child to discuss a variety of issues. The book is also appropriate for young readers up to age 8 or 9 to read on their own.
