Look no further. This is the Reason book to own. I'm looking forward to a Reason 3.0 version!

The best instructional book I have ever read.

This book is the most well written, documented, and friendly instruction manual I have ever read.

Firstly, its entirely clear that the author is a professional user of Reason, knows heaps about the program and how to maximize its potential, as well as suggests ways for taking it out of the norm.

Secondly, the tone of the author is friendly and fun. You get the feeling this book was written by your big brother or best friend giving you the details. The text is clear, simple, and accurate. The author conveys information without loosing your interest or overwhelming you with dry tech speak.

I have used Reason for 2 years and am a Reason 3.0 user, but still refer to this book often. It covers so much about the core of the program that you will quickly be able to learn the new devices in 3.0 as you will have a fantastic foundation and understanding of the application. The book explains all the devices in 2.0 (including the functions of knobs, sliders, buttons, synthesis models, loops, envelopes, etc), CV/Gating, Sequencing, ReWire, use with other major audio applications, useful tips/tricks, and plenty of links to helpful user websites. It also has numerous quick and easy "how to" tutorials, that are clearly documented step by step and with pictures.

Very well done. I am grateful for how quickly I was able to ramp up on Reason due 90% to this book. Honestly, this should be the standard for instructional texts.

No, you can't RECORD with Reason. But there are countless ways to use files that you have recorded with other, very simple or even free applications (how about your Sony Minidisk recorder hooked up to a decent mike? talk about light years ahead of what we had available way back when); files that you have downloaded, files that you have gotten off of records or CD's or even TV, in Reason (shame!). It can be as simple as having the drum machine play a sound file from anywhere on your computer, with a surprising amount of control of, for example, sample start-and then you move on to the more powerful samplers... And then this will provide you with many different ways to control and distort, filter, and manipulate those files that are so easy to trigger or otherwise get inside Reason. Because that is what Reason does, it gives you a studio full of tools-synths, samplers, mixers, and the many sound sculpting modifiers to create, twist, and control your sounds.

And this book does a fantastic job of showing you these tools, in a very carefully thought out order and depth. Like another reviewer said, you would have to be a serious power user indeed not to get many good ideas from this book; and like yet another reviewer said, people that write textbooks should look at this one and see just how well it can be done. It will take you from a novice to synthesizers to an expert on Reason and computer synthesis music creation, giving history and background to help you learn about the many music synthesis tools. It is filled with tutorials, how-to's, and tips and tricks that even go beyond Reason sometimes. You could take a tutorial and change it as you follow along and create it and have a complete Reason song of your own easily. I also thought it gave a summarily good introduction into the powerful usage of the Control Voltage interface from ages past (one of Reason's most powerful tools in it's bag of tricks-one that ties everything together like you have never been able to do with so many different devices), with tips and tricks there, too. There are a lot of toys available in Reason, but once you get past a certain not-too-difficult level, it is actually a very intuitive and very fun to use interface; and this book is definitely filled with this same infectious enthusiasm for that rack o' modules and wires. It is an extraordinarily good book for beginner to expert.

You should see my copy of this book, it is nearly destroyed from so much usage, carrying it about wherever I go and constantly going back to it for reference.

As a side note, I think the Acrobat Reader Operation Manual supplied with Reason is also excellent. It's just what it should be-precise and to the point-it's an Operation Manual, after all. If you take the time to practise and apply what you read, it will give you the background to know what you are doing (as much as is possible-sometimes when you have so much going on in a patch it would be hard for anyone to say how you got there-and that can be fun, too) and what every control does. This book will do the same and take you farther with much more help.

I Couldn't Imagine A Better Book!

Before I read this book I had Reason installed on my computer and I didn't use it very often because the interface wasn't straightforward for a beginning user like myself to understand how to operate it beyond basic operations. This book is an excellent source to learn how to use Reason 2 or 2.5. It contains practical, hands-on tutorials, explanations of the knobs and interfaces, and helpful tips. This is a must have if you want to become proficient in Reason!

A must for any user of reason

P.S. Any one that made comments to recording audio in to Reason ha ha ha

Not being a war historian, I learned a tremendous amount about the war from this book which gave me a whole new perspective on how our world has evolved over the last 60 years. It's a remarkable revelation for younger generations, like my own, to have a view into an era where the future of the world was in question.

"What an absolutely delightful way to spend a 19-hour flight to India. I thoroughly enjoyed 'Warrior Priest'! Up until this read, I didn't count myself as much of a historical fiction fan but I'll look forward to Johnson's next installation of the genre. Very well done! I've recommended it twice already and lent my own copy to my business partner who has his own long flight ahead with an onerous mandate that my signed copy must return quickly to my personal library." "I just finished reading every page of Warrior Priest. I even poured carefully through all the Epilogues and Acknowledgements. I particularly appreciated the Roster of Real-Life People as that answered a couple questions I had noted while reading. I give Warrior Priest an A+. There were so many threads seemingly going in so many directions, but later they were skillfully woven into one solid fabric that became a fine novel." Jan Catherwood, Titusville, Florida

Warrior Priest has an advantage over many historical novels in that it is accurate to the smallest detail. Many WWII novels have just a general war background with few historically correct details. Warrior Priest has been carefully researched and the reader can be sure that each historic fact is accurate.

Additionally, the story moves quickly and keeps the reader engrossed in the lives of each character. The book ended much too soon. While some relationships were "tied up" neatly, some left us wondering what comes next.

Can we look forward to a Desert Priest follow-up to Father Jack Brecker and his family and friends?

Having just finished "Warrior Priest" I am still fresh with childhood memories. Having grown up in the area of Mike Johsnons' story I reviewed some memories. Also remember my Grandpa and his White Owl Cigars! My,how they did stink!! My Grandma made him smoke them on the front porch!
My Dad landed on Utah Beach, and I recalled some of his war experiences, not all good except for having met my Mom in France!
Mike Johnson has written an enjoyable page turner giving me a different view of life during WWII Europe and a better perspective of events with charcters to which one can relate.

This is a wonderful book with a wonderful story! My kids love collecting candy on Halloween to leave for the Fairy Eve. And they love waiting to see what toy Eve has made them in return for their candy. It is something they looked forward to for weeks before Halloween! We'll continue this tradition for years to come.

A VISUALLY ENTICING HALLOWEEN TREAT

Review Date: 2006-10-31
All Hallows Eve: The Story of the Halloween Fairy isn't your typical children's Halloween story. It's not filled with the usual ghosts and goblins...there's really nothing remotely scary making it a wonderful choice for those with smaller children. The story is about a little fairy named Eve who lives in a pumpkin patch with other fairies. They carve out faces on the pumpkins to use them as "cozy spaces". Yet despite all of her magical fairy powers the one thing Eve can't do is make candy...and Eve dearly loves candy! It seems Eve can only make toys and her toys that look life candy just don't taste very good. Eve's friends want to cheer her up and they go about visiting the other fairies in the pumpkin patch to gather treats to make her feel better.

Its whimsical rhymes are reminiscent of Dr. Seuss and the magic of the fairies almost makes the story feel like a Christmas story. It makes for a different and fresh take on Halloween. All Hallows Eve is written by Lisa Johnson and illustrated by her husband Tucker and they certainly make a great team. Quality illustration is somewhat a lost art in children's books today as often publishers just try to get books put out as cheaply as possible but that isn't the case with All Hallows Eve. This is a wonderful hardcover book with dust jacket and the kind of story that you can share with your kids or grandkids over and over every Halloween season.

This is a wonderful book for any fairy lover. I know this site recommends it for children 4 to 8 years old, however, all ages of fairy lovers will love it. I bought several copies for friends my own age and over and I am nearly retirement age. Both the author and illustrator do a wonderful job. You will do yourself a favor by buying a copy to add to your fairy book collection.

The Quest of the Golden World

Robert Johnson has been a great teacher, mentor, and inspiration for many in the exploration of the inner world, and ultimately the discovery for what he has known as 'the golden world'.It is a homecoming and a place of bliss and repose. I had the privilege to study and share time with Robert in the U.S. and India. He provided for me a taste of that world and a living inspiration in the very real possibility of developing a sacred and blissful rapport between the inner and outer worlds we inhabit. I was delighted to find in this book my own tiny contribution in suggesting to Robert that he take a polaroid camera to India. The realm of Enlightenment is the destiny of all humanity, and here is the humble story of one man who is pointing for us the way to follow... if we are willing to find the courage to do so.

Sometimes I think if I was being scurried away to a desert island I would only bring Robert Johnson, Robert Bly, and James Hollis books because these three are such amazing writers and thinkers. This autobiography is so heartfelt and real and just a total gem all around, Don't miss it- or any of his other books, especially He, She, We, and Ecstacy.

I learned a great deal from this book. It gave me a basic understanding of Jungian analysis, in particular how dreams are used to tap into the sub-conscious mind and help identify one's personal "destiny" or "thread" as Johnson describes it. I appreciated his several visions of the "Golden World" and how he sought, throughout his life, to re-experience this heightened state of awareness. He also describes how we project our desires onto others in order to experience this sense of connection. I loved Mr. Johnson's experiences in India, and the way he immersed himself in the culture and learned so much about their distinct way of viewing the world. I hope to read another of his books.

A Life Well Developed

Review Date: 2007-11-24
Beginning in his youth, Robert Johnson shares a frank history of his spiritual development through his entire life, through the lens of a master of Jungian theories and concepts. He describes his early experiences and wounding, his early adult years following the "slender threads" that guide him to finding God's will for him. He describes his sensitive personality type and its close connection to a world both present and just beyond our grasp. His life demonstrates a beautiful rendition of following the spiritual path and its relationship to development from a Jungian perspective. He is as humble and unassuming in his writing as I suspect he was in life. This biography is a beautiful portait of a man's life lived well in the pursuit of following God's will. It demonstrates the unique understanding that can be developed by pursuing life from a Jungian perspective spiritually. I would recommend this book to people who have some sense of the breadth of Jungian psychology and some sense of their own "type", as well as some general concept of type dynamics and the concept of the shadow or inferior function. It is thoroughly engrossing and enjoyable. I would recommend it especially to middle to older age adults, seminarians, or others pursuing their personal spiritual development.

An Indispensable Guide

Review Date: 2007-11-07
When I'm asked for the most influential books in my life, this is the one that tops my list. As someone who reads 50-200 books a year, that's a big list. I've given it as gifts, quoted it in sermons, referred to it as a spiritual counselor, used it for my own growth and have come back to it over and over since it was first published. I happened upon these reviews while ordering Johnson's latest CD, Golden World, which I'm thrilled to know has been produced. I've read all his books and agree with other reviewers that this is the best, or at any rate, the one that has provided a helpful road map for my life and experiences, and hence, for the many whom I also touch. For those of us, and there are numerous souls, who have had extraordinary tastes of the Golden World (and its inhabitants), "balancing heaven and earth" for the rest of one's life is a daily task; sometimes grace, often a struggle. His words in this memoir (my paraphrase): "there have always been those whose job it is to tend the borders between the worlds" gave me context when I first needed it. His book "We," while it didn't save me from romantic errors (and he writes: "the genie"--e.g. romantic love--"can't be put back in the bottle,") did, again, provide a context for healing and future lessons ("the depression is always in direct proportion to the inflation that preceded it.)His experiences with Krishnamurthi, recounted in this book, gave me important lessons as a teacher, e.g."don't try to give an old man's wisdom to a young person," and his lessons on sainthood have been extremely important as well. If you are living the inner journey, have any sort of spiritual life, and especially, if like Parsifal, Johnson's oft-referred to mythic model, have suffered the agony and the ecstasy of a visit to the Grail Castle and then "lost" it, this book is for you.

Clear plates with good, yet badly printed pictures, and too little information on the species' biology
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-04
This book features clear plates with apparently well painted views of probably all the species of amphibians and reptiles occuring in Canada and the USA east of the Rocky Mountains, apparently also including those of Puerto Rico and introduced ones. Unfortunately, the plates of the third edition from 1998 are printed badly, with the colour dots not completely blurring in front of the reader's eye, and the pictures are a little tiny anyway. On the page opposing the plates are the common and scientific names given, as well as some important details of their appearance. Many species are represented with several images (e.g. from the side, from below; adults, juveniles), but this would probably be warranted for even more species.
The species accounts are, however, usually much too short, giving almost no detail about biology and life history of the species. Among them are, however, some colour photographs, whose printing resolution is usually also somewhat too bad, though.
The range maps are in colour and show the different subspecies in different shades, yet they are also somewhat confusing, because water bodies like the sea or the great lakes are not shaded differently from the land, so that their borders look like the state borders, and because the range borders have also be drawn in black (maybe for copying?).
Laudable is the existence of a general section about amphibians and reptiles and their catching, handling and captive care. This section would be worth expanding, though.
The third printing (1998) is/was, as already stated, not very good because of its low colour resolution and its maybe somewhat too small size, and it is/was bind only as paperback with relatively thick pages throughout.

All of the chapters were hilarious except for one. I wont say which one, but I cried for ten minutes after I read it. Everyone will really enjoy this treasure and it may tell you things about your kitties you never knew. According to the book, there are no such things as bad kitties, just miscommunications between kitties/owners.

This picture book is full of senseless fun. Escabacher taps into the joys of being a wild and verbally restless kid filled with energy and meaningless chatter. With little delay, he turns those words into a winner for all ages. He uses the names of twenty-six kids of every age who together reveal the excitement of writing a poem based on their name. There's Kyle who meets a crocodile; Moss who doesn't know what to do with a ton of applesauce; Uz scooping up fuzz and Ty the human fly. Most of all there is Xerk who gets paid to lurk, he loves to sneak and do detective work. To complement the silly poetic text is Johnson's silly outrageous illustrations. Cartoon characters fill the pages making sure you see their simple silly faces. Some eyes closed some opened some with and without noses. The colors used might not entice younger ages, but silliness outweighs the color schemes. For ages 3 -7.

OK, I am confused. Do the "professional" reviewers not have kids? My daughter loved this book. We read it often (no offense to the author, I can't read any book every night and stay sane). She loves the rhymes and then we of course start a silly game where we have to make up a rhyme with her or her friends names. This is truely my only complaint. Have you ever tried to rhyme Jessica or Jacqueline!? Anyway, this book is a great vehicle for immagination. My daughters kindergarden class all made up rhymes for their names because of it. I really think the reviewers are out of touch with what kids like. Of course, how many times have you seen a movie that you and everyone you know loved, but the critics hated. Anyway, trust the kids, the book is great!

This is my third copy of World Atlas. Each one has been such a substantial improvement over the previous one that its purchase was inevitable. Great maps, witty, relevant text and the usual breath-taking photographs of wine country. (did you ever notice that no body grows wine in ugly places?)

Good book but mixed feelings. Here's my take on the pro's and con's of the Frugal Editor.

The Format of this book: It is noted that it is a 208 page book, but it's actually 192 pages. Subtract from that, 29 blank pages and 6 pages of paragraph length chapters and you have a 158 page book for 18.95. Now in her book, the author states that formatting standards of what side a chapter should start is the culprit of white pages (because chapters should begin on the right side). However, this standard gets overused, so the format stretches a small book into a roughly 200 page book. This is a huge pet peeve of mine. As it seems lately, many self-published books are using this tactic. I don't mind purchasing a 90 page book filled with excellent information as long as it is priced right. But a 150 page book for $19 plus shipping made me feel cheated.

On the plus side, she does include shaded boxes to highlight important tidbits or summaries of information, which I found extremely helpful, especially for the visual learner.

Now for the content. On her website/blog, she promotes how this book goes into the Flesch-Kincaid Readability tool. Something that I was really interested in knowing and it is what finally prompted me to purchase the book. But the only info. her book delves into is on how to access it. She does NOT offer any concrete interpretation on what the Flesch scores mean and how to specifically use it. She does, however, send you to a link of audio files she produced on using the Flesch for an additional cost, of course. Albeit, you can't even purchase that audio because it is not even available on the websites listed within the book. For me, that was slick advertising and left me really disappointed. Thankfully, I own another book by James V. Smith, "The Writer's Little Helper" which goes into the Flesch tool quite a bit. I was just looking to find more innovative ways to use it thru the Frugal Editor book, but I was left empty handed.

A main premise throughout this book is on the utilization of Microsoft's Find and Replace tools and how to search for redundancies in terms of adverbs, gerunds, and the such. I found these sections very helpful because it never occurred to me to use this tool in such a way. If you are not familiar with this, then the purchase of this book will make it worthwhile.

There are a few sections on grammar that the Frugal Editor delves into with enough explanation to help you implement the author's points within your editing. But then there are many other sections where she just wraps it up with a very brief summary of a few lines and sends you off to various website links. Although, some of these sources were excellent, for 18.95 and having about 35 blank pages within the book, the author could have summarized better and offer more examples on the topics she touched so that one could utilize her book as a usable reference. I didn't need to pay 18.95 for a list of website links for grammar usage tips when a Google search would cost me nothing.

On the plus side, the Frugal Editor does contain an extensive set of appendixes and some were very beneficial such as a website that offered free searching tools of adverbs, prepositions, passive words, word & phrase frequency. You can find it at www.rogerjcarlson.com . Then there is another similar tool for about a hundred dollars on a U.K website for a Concordance Tool that does the above, as well as indexing and other tools. I wasn't aware of these tools, so just finding out about it within this book did help to lessen my other gripes.

The author also included sample query letters and cover letters although meant to be helpful, had no connection with the editing purposes of this book. Just seemed like "helpful" filler - a nicety.

All in all, the author seems very likeable and enthusiastic especially about her books. She has an extensive professional background and seems to be a respectable member of the community. Her advice is not to be taken lightly. I really liked what she had to say about the editing process and had only hoped that she would have dispelled more of her experience and background into her book as she does in her audios (she has an extensive list of audios - each about 60 minutes long, but I found no way of purchasing many of them). Perhaps a future updated edition of this book is due soon (Hint).

If you can find this book elsewhere for a lot less, then I definitely recommend purchasing it.

***********UPDATE****************

This is my second writeup for my update. Somehow it got suspiciously deleted. Hmmmm. For reasons I don't understand because all I wanted to relay to you prospective buyers is another book by BOBBIE CHRISTMAS titled "Write In Style: Using Your Word Processor and Other Techniques to Improve Your Writing", which surpasses the Frugal Editor book in so many ways. Christmas's book offers very detailed explanations about style and punctuation, as well as a few other elements of craft as it pertains to using the "search and find" function in your word processing program. This book is everything and more than what the Frugal Editor offers and should have been. Although, the Frugal Editor has its merits, buy this book instead.

Should you be your own editor?

The Frugal Editor will answer this question while giving you an insight to editing. In the end, it is up to the author, whether or not they want to self-edit their manuscript. Carolyn will give you information and links to information while also giving you some tools in Microsoft Word, albeit, pre Vista and Word 2007.

With a bit of internet searching, you can find the subtle differences, I did. Word 2007 will also save your work in a format that someone using an earlier version will not be able to read. You will learn this also as you become more familiar with Word 2007. Hint: save your docs as Word 97-2003; that way people using earlier versions of Word will be able to read your docs easily.

In The Frugal Editor, Carolyn gives you a wealth of information gleaned over the years by trial and error. It is easier to learn from someone that' been there and done that than fight it yourself. I know I have, and I welcome the information to help me save time and energy by reading this book and visiting some of the links. Unfortunately, as the internet is, links don't seem to last. I found a link here and there that didn't work; that being said, I found more than enough links that did work for me to bookmark many sites for further perusal.

No matter what level of writer you are, The Frugal Editor is a must read, whether novice or pro, you will gain something. I plan on telling my writer friends about this book. I found it fun and informational at the same time. As a freelance writer, The Frugal Editor, can be, and, should be, used if you are considering writing of any type.

Do yourself a favor, pick up a copy and read it. You will not be disappointed, and you might just learn something new about writing in the process.

This is a fantastic editing reference for writers. With so many style guides out there, it's sometimes hard to know which books are really worth owning. This book teaches you how to effectively edit your work (as much as is possible on your own), use the tools in your word processing program, and avoid deadly words and tell-tales of amateur writing.

Oh, how I wish I'd read this book before I published mine! This book will sit forever on my bookshelf alongside my Roget's Thesaurus and my Chicago Manual of Style.

A must have for killer manuscript writing

As an author and being involved in the publishing world I highly recommend this book to all those wanting to break into the market, those already in the market, and those afraid to step into the market. Carolyn dispels all myths, gives encouragement, and certainly filled the book with tips and techniques to get past road blocks and fear. Concise, easy to read and follow, "The Frugal Editor" is a must-have book in the writer's library to create those killer manuscripts. I just know it will get dog-eared from use within a very short time, and as a writer you will easily have your foot into the door of successful publishing.

Carolyn Howard-Johnson's "The Frugal Editor" is an eye-opening journey into the often tedious realm of editing. Carolyn's book is both informative and entertaining in the way she presents the technical subject matter as she interjects bits of wit and humor throughout. Her explanations for solving common writing problems were informative and detailed.
Even readers with a professional knowledge of Microsoft's Word program will discover great editing tools designed to assist authors in their quest for a perfected end product.
As an author, I found "The Frugal Editor" an enlightening read and a valuable reference book, and one that should be used by everyone looking to perfect their writing skills.

She provided a program to growth and help couples develop the relationship, through her seven topics.
She guides people in exploring emotions and pain, and helping couples create new communication. Also recommend other book: I Love You. Now What?: Falling in Love is a Mystery, Keeping It Isn't is the right math of this matter.

As a therapist in private practice who specializes in working with couples and an EFT trained therapist, I have found Dr. Johnson's new book an easy read as well as an effective tool for couples to work through together.

Dr. Johnson has said that taking EFT and putting it into a framework that couples can use together on their own was very challenging to do. This book is a testimony to her hard work, one couples can benefit from, if they read and do the exercises.

In the book, Dr. Johnson takes the readers through a straight forward explanation of the negative cycles most couples find themselves in. She handles the explanation of adult-attachment brilliantly and relates the concept to what happens in relationships when we get our feelings hurt. Next she has the reader re-work a difficult moment in their relationship and through this demonstrates her principals and some key interventions that are used in therapy with an EFT therapist.

While buying and reading the book along with completing the exercises may not be equal to actually working through therapy with an EFT therapist, for those wanting a solid relationship check up or tune up, or those wanting to work on their own, Hold Me Tight is an easy and effective way to go. If you are looking for a self help couples book, you won't be disappointed.

This book is easy to read, and most will recognise themselves more than once in the featured couples. The author has developed a very effective method for dealing with problems that haunt most couples. There are many "conversations" to have with your partner to excercise the skills outlined in the book. I highly recommend to any couple, especially those that have the same arguments over and over that never get resolved.

Hold Me Tight is an entertaining and enjoyable read. Johnson offers couples in couples counseling an adjunctive support system in addition to the therapy hour.In addition to being immensely helpful to couples. It is a book that all couples - and all people who want to be part of a couple - should read. The perfect companion for this book is I Love You. I've been reading a number of books on couples counseling as part of working through longstanding problems that have emerged in an 8-year relationship. This is by far the best book on the dynamics of adult pair-bonded love (attachment bonds to use Johnson's term) that I have ever read. I'm buying extra copies to give friends who I know are having problems in their couple-relationships. This should be required first reading for every couple in trouble. Maybe even required reading for anyone considering a committed relationship in or out of societally defined marriage.
