I just finished reading this story and I loved it. It was so nice to read a book where the romance was real and not just the mushy stuff that are in so many books today. Margaret Johnson is a wonderful author and I will be reading more of her books soon.

Diana Sullivan will do whatever it takes to save her family's business, even if it means denying herself the love and happiness she deserves. She has lost at love once, and appears to be on the verge of doing so again, yet without her help, her family will face certain financial ruin. The reader can empathize with Margaret Johnson's heroine and the circumstances in which she finds herself. After the Storm is a suspenseful tale of love, family committment, and faith, sure to provoke the reader to examine her own motives and convictions. Wonderful story of faith in God and His redeeming love.

Best-selling author, Margaret Johnson, has spun a heartbreaking, heartwarming romantic saga in this affordable paperback you will most certainly want to add to your easy-reading library. "After the Storm" is not only an intriguing, confounding blend of lovable and not-so-lovable characters, but Johnson clearly distinguishes between upright and shady behaviours and motivations, and leaves the reader convinced that the price of "upright" is never too high. This is an exceedingly well-crafted, light & lively romance novel with a profound and sobering Christian message.

What a plot!

A wonderful soft back book of posters designed for instant nostalgia. I rather liked its comprehensiveness, mainly featuring US railroads but nicely chapters devoted to Canadian and European posters. Another nice touch is the inclusion of ads, baggage labels and several black and white photos.

Predictably the posters tend to feature the streamline diesels of the thirties and forties (certainly a lot easier for the illustrators) rather than the European style of picturing the destinations. The travelling experience was the selling point rather than getting somewhere quickly and this, by the late forties and fifties, was rather a lost cause as plane travel was slowly becoming commonplace. There is great 1958 photo of the General Motors Aerotrain on page fifty-four making a PR stop in San Diego, possibly the last true streamliner.

Most of the posters shown have a graphic rather than literal style though there is a stunning 1940 Santa Fe brochure cover that has an E8 somewhere west of the Rockies done in a very photo realist style. The last chapter Rails for Victory covers the WW2 years when railroads lost no opportunity in telling everyone they were doing their bit. There are couple of beautiful Dean Cornwell paintings used as calendar art by the Pennsylvania RR in 1943 and 44.

The European chapter has some excellent British posters issued before the railroads were taken over by the state in 1947. If these take your fancy have a look at Railway Posters 1923-1947: From the Collection of the National Railway Museum, York a gorgeous book of over two hundred posters and quite remarkable because of the range of artistic styles that were used just to push train travel.

All Aboard is an easy-on-the-eye quick tour of rail posters. A more detailed look can be found in Travel by Train: The American Railroad Poster, 1870-1950 with plenty of super graphic material.

This book covers railroad advertising from the early 1900s to the late 50s. All color art and a few B&W pictures showing the real trains that influenced the advertising. It shows examples of railroad advertising from posters, timetables, brochures and luggage tags as well as railroads in the US, Canada and Europe. There is a breif history introducing each chapter and the captions for each picture are descriptive and accurate. At the end of the book, there are a few pages explaining how to collect railroad art, which I found very informative. An easy read and very entertaining. An excellent coffee-table book.

Most historical or regional surveys of American cooking suffer from a rather academic approach. This book presents a personal selection of recipes which still manages to be representative and historical. Most recipes are both simple and excellent. The author writes clearly, personally, and beautifully. Publisher, please reprint.

A classic of sophisticated but unpretentious Am. cooking.

I have about 50 cookbooks--maybe more--and this is one of the very best, one I use regularly. These recipes work--procedures are not complex, ingredients are not esoteric, but the combinations are fresh and interesting, and Johnson has a nice feel for "Americanness." He has clearly spent time with these recipes, creating ones that really work well. Let's hope the publisher keeps it in print

No finer cookbook exists. If I had my way this book would be in every American kitchen. I have given many copies as gifts. The recipes will make your family happy on any day or please your guests at a dinner party. Familiar ingredients taste entirely new and the recipes are easy to follow. The author becomes a friend as his notes reveal the historical and regional sources of the recipes and suggest why you will enjoy them. Unadulterated by the commercial foodie-industrial complex, this is real food that reveals the real genius of America's best cooks.

In his year-end column for World War II Magazine, book review editor Robert Citino selected American Warriors as one of the best World War II books of the year. I agree. History books should be informative, accurate and readable; American Warriors is all of these and more. The author brings to light the military careers of five of our recent presidents, highlighting their naval service in the Pacific. Extensively end-noted, American Warriors draws on interviews with more than 100 veterans who served with the presidents as well as on a comprehensive bibliography of primary sources. Folklore has no place in this well-researched book. Presidential scholars will find it a dependable resource; more casual readers will find it swift paced and enjoyable. I highly recommend American Warriors.

As we currently ponder our country's military involvements and the credentials of those who would be President, a.k.a. Commander in Chief, this is a timely book to digest.

American Warriors is a highly readable, yet detailed account of the naval service of five United States presidents. Before picking up this informative book, I knew that presidents Kennedy and Bush Sr. served in World War II. I certainly did not know that five presidents were naval officers in the Pacific.

I am particularly impressed with the author's interviews of well over 100 veterans who served with the presidents. American Warriors is a reflection of his diligent pursuit of the details that are often passed over by political biographers. Time and again he sorts out conflicting testimony with rational explanations of events seen through multiple eyes.

Many Americans are aware that President Kennedy was the skipper of PT 109, which was sunk by a Japanese destroyer. I would venture a guess that very few are aware that Kennedy skippered a second PT boat, or equally surprising, that Presidents Nixon and Ford each served in the Pacific longer than either Kennedy or Bush.

American Warriors sets the standard for reporting these five presidents' military service. Presidential biographers would do well to take note of this insightful book. Military history fans will be delighted.

American Warriors is a detailed, annotated account of five American Presidents who also happened to serve their country as soldiers in the Pacific theater during WWII. The author has thoroughly researched the naval careers of each of these men, and has skillfully annotated their records by interviewing the many veterans who served with them.

The thoroughness of the research in American Warriors does not affect its readability. The accounts range from Lyndon Johnson's reconnaissance mission for General MacArthur, to the rescue of George H. W. Bush after his near fatal glide-bombing attack in his VT-51 Avenger. The details describing John F. Kennedy's heroism and dedication to his crew after the ramming of his PT-109 provide an equally important "rest of the story." The particulars of Richard Nixon as a young ground aviation officer stationed in the Solomon Islands present an interesting contrast to the Machiavellian characteristics that he later exhibited. And the natural leadership qualities of Gerald Ford are clearly displayed during his duty under fire as officer-of-the-deck on the carrier Monterey. In summary, the exploits documented in American Warriors serve as fascinating prologues, that should enhance the reader's knowledge of the more well-known political personas later developed by these Commanders-in-Chief.

American Warriors is highly recommended for those interested in modern presidential history.

Presidents Send Others to War-- These Were There!

American Warriors chronicals the time spent by Presidents Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, and Bush in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Most of us knew these five men from their times as President and their poltical careers prior to becoming President. Some of us knew about President Kennedy and the PT-109 story and the dangers he faced while serving his country in WWII; but few of us knew that the other Presidents served in the war and faced life-threatening situations that shaped their future views of the world prior to entering the political area.
All of these Presidents had to make decisions during their Presidency to send others to war. The book shows that these men knew war first-hand and were undoubtedly influenced in their future political careers by their dangerous wartime experiences. American Warriors provides information on these five Presidents that is not typically addressed in other biographies using interviews with veterans who were there to corroborate events during these Presidents' service in the Pacific Theater of WWII.

"The Art of Letting Go of Stuff" does just that. It gives simple, easy, user friendly solutions to life's daily stressors in such a way that the individual is empowered to take control of their thoughts, actions, and reactions. It promotes self-awareness and effective means of going beyond that awareness to the point of taking action towards making needed change (solutions). It has lifelong implications as far as reducing stress, mental worry, and the feeling of being "out of control", and establishes itself as an ego booster, self-esteem elevator, and overall healthy way of living. It covers a lot of ground in a short timeframe making it convenient and relevant to every aspect of daily living.

My contact with others that have attended seminars or heard tapes has been positive and positively life altering. Darren is gifted in fulfilling his calling to help others - to the extent that his programs are an artform!!!!

Don't pass up this opportunity to take charge of your life and Happiness!!!!!!

I received my copy of this book today, and I'm very satisfied with it.
Sure, its expensive, but I guess thats a reasonable price for a 250¬ or so pages book filled with high quality images.

There are lots of interesting descriptions and fun facts about the games and the company, and many nostalgic (and never seen before, as far as I know) and artistic images.

If you enjoyed this series of games, then this is a book you'd want to buy.

From the moment you take a look at this book, you know what's in stored for you. The paper is high quality, and the images are awesome!! Each chapter is discussed on the progression of the game and how the art influenced the way it was made.
There are so many concept images in here that'll give you a deeper understanding on why the Oddworld games have been so successful. My apologies if I'm repeating myself. There's just so much to this book that can't be explained in words.

Each page is beautifully printed in vibrant colors and every page is laid out perfectly. After reading and looking at this book, I HAD to go back and find my old PS1 games for this and play it just to appreciate it. Although the price is a bit much, it is worth every penny, and this is coming from someone who's been working in art for a very long time.

As art books go, this is simply as good as it gets. The book is beautifully printed, the pages are large and vivid, and the art is simply second to none. Aside from that, there's just nothing more to say. If you like the Oddworld games, or you just like good art, you can't go wrong here. It's very, very hard to imagine an art book being any higher quality than this.

The illustrations and CG work in this book are excellent. Love books in general? The quality of the prints are stunning. I own this book for about a week now and there hasn't been a day that i haven't wandered around in Oddworld. I bet it will stay that way for a while. Go ahead and take this journey too.

This book was recommended to me by a friend so I was kind of obligated to read it. But as much as I tried to put it off I just couldn't put this book down. It starts off as a typical story of horny young men trying to have sex with any and everyone but you notice it all serves it's purpose as the book goes along. You get to watch each character grow as the chapters go by. Besides this the ending was an absolute stunner.

I've waited a long time for someone to write a book that dealt with the streets harsh realities with a story you actually feel like you could insert yourself into. Greg draws you into each character showing you their flaws and let's you grow with them as the book reads along. The vivid sex scenes drew me in and the dramatic transformation of each character kept my attention. The end of the book was an eye opener and so was everything leading up to it. I love this book and would recommend this book to all of my friends.

My husband and I enjoyed hours reading Nancy's book! He was stationed in Brunswick ME with the Navy in 1969-1971. Both our sons were born there. We lived on Bailey Island near Cooks Lobster house - some of the best times we have had in our 40 year marrage was on that island. Nancy brought it all back. Enjoyed the past history of a land we love! Thank you Nancy!

I have visited Bailey Island and found it to be an excellent mixture of culture, history, beauty and nature. I would like to be the first to tell you that images, stories, and events caught in this book were so definitive that I could hear the gulls and smell the sea as I read. Remembering the waves' splashing on the shores restores the tranquility I felt when I was there. While immersed in the pages, I left behind the city life and the industrial buzz of cell phones, laptops, trains, crowds, and traffic. A vision comes back of the lobstermen hauling traps and completing a full day before most people eat lunch. The legends Nancy tells reminds me of the role playing games I played on the shores of Lowell's Cove. I would play a pirate and make a ship of wood, Styrofoam, and ropes. My treasures were covered by the seaweed and then forever lost with the rising of the tide. As I continued to read, my memories got intertwined with her words. As I turned the pages, I passed through the years on the island. Each picture, story and word springs forth the essence of Bailey Island. Life is tough on the island, but it is this toughness that makes the island home to real, honest, hard working people. I have not found any book that walks me down Main Street, film stripping the history, culture, and legends of a place with such presentable charm and attention as Nancy.

I love all the books in this series. I am introducing these to my 4-year-old son who just started pre-school, and we are working on how he expresses fear/anger/sadness as well as manners. I have looked at quite a few options and like this series the best. This book introduces the topic of manners, shows examples of manners in actions, as well as the benefits of being gracious. Also, Meiners balances this with what happens when we do not use good manners and how we can make amends.

The artwork is delightful. The books are short enough to hold their attention. The kids love all the books we have in this series, and you can find just about any topic you are needing help with.

We own almost all the books in Cheri Meiners series. This particular one simply and beautifully illustrates the aplication of everyday manners through different scenarios that will be interesting and often familiar to most children. It supports, through example, the work that parents do at home teaching children everyday manners.

However, an added (and perhaps hidden) bonus of this and many if not all of the books in the series will interest parents of children on the autism spectrum. This and many of the other titles have opened a window to the kind of knowledge that simply does not come naturally to my daughter with high functioning autism. This title and others in the series (in particular Share and Take Turns, Listen and Learn, and Understand and Care) provide a framework for understanding social interactions and rules that is warm, supportive, loving, inclusive, natural, and most importantly, instructive.

I have watched how the lessons contained within them seamlessly flow into her daily conversation and life ("May I please have some Cheddar Bunnies, Mommy?" - this after a couple of readings of "Be Polite and Kind"). I know they have helped her think through the kinds of things that do not come naturally to her and equally importantly, give her the language framework to apply them. I highly recommend these books not just for children on the spectrum but for any parent or even teacher who is looking for an entertaining, non-preachy way to expand upon lessons on good social behavior or more simply, per the title of the series, is interested in helping their child learn "how to get along".

Great book series, recommended!!

I would highly recommend any of the books in this series by Cheri Meiners. My just-turned-5-year-old son asks for them at storytime, and the writing is just right for pre-K and kindergarten children. Truthful without being preachy, the series shows children and family members from many different ethnic groups in the colorful illustrations, and each book addresses issues which are developmentally critical to this particular age group: sharing, taking turns, being afraid, listening, respecting others, helping out at home, etc. These books have given us a starting point to discuss problems at school or interacting with others, and have helped my son to have more empathy for his peers....I am hopeful that this quality will serve him well as he continues on to kindergarten and elementary school. It is exciting to hear him use ideas from this series to problem solve.

I will not be surprised when Beyond the Bake Sale becomes referenced as the quintessential book on parent participation. The book not only takes a widely researched topic and presents it in an organized, easy to read format, it also reads like a how-to book rather than a textbook, making the topic much more approachable.

Beyond the Bake Sale became a resource to me and participants in a recent study I did with parents of children who have disabilities, educators, and school leaders. During the study participants worked to discover parent participation techniques that would open doors to both parents of children with disabilities and educators within their schools. At the end of the study, I was able to provide each participant with a copy of this book along with a list of suggested pages that fit the needs of each individual school site. The participants were overjoyed to receive the book and many (both parents and educators) have already e-mailed me saying they appreciate the way the book presents the information. Based on the feedback of others and my own reading, Beyond the Bake Sale is not only informative, it is inspirational.

Fantastic resource

This is the book I've been looking for since my daughter entered the public school system a year and a half ago! As an active and involved parent, I was eager to get involved at her school. I volunteered regularly in her classroom, I attended all her events (those in the classroom and those that were school-wide.) I joined PTO and attended meetings regularly. I served on planning committees and contributed to fund-raisers. Still, I lacked a way in to what seemed like a very tight system of parents and teachers working together. I felt as though I didn't have enough experience to know what was approriate to talk about where and when. I didn't have the confidence (even after being a teacher myself for five years) to ask the questions I wanted to ask about the way our school worked.

The transition to first grade was not a smooth one for our family. My daughter's teacher was a first-year teacher and lacked the experience she needed to keep the lines of parent-teacher communication wide open. Our concerns snowballed quickly and we were ready to pull our daughter out of the school system and look for alternatives when I found this book.

This book presents advice, tips, and plans for teachers, parents, and administrators to begin working towards collaboration and cooperation in the school setting. Our children can only benefit from having more people on their teams! I want to be recognized as an important member of my daughter's team. This book has given me tips on ways to get my daughter's school to see me that way (beyond the basics I was already doing.) I found the list of questions to ask at conferences or in meetings to be particularly helpful as ways in to a conversation with my daughter's teacher even when nothing is going wrong.

My experience has been that teachers and administrators all say the same thing. They know that family involvement is integral to student success and they urge parents to get involved. However, when it comes down to the actual work of providing those opportunities many teachers fall short.

I am meeting with our principal next week and I plan to bring this book as a donation to the school. I hope the administrators will pass the title along to the other teachers and staff at our school. I will bring another copy to the next PTO meeting, and hopefully we will start to work towards change from there. I want to give this book to every parent I know! One parent, teacher, principal--one school at a time--that is how we will transform.

It couldn't be any better

This is the book I have been waiting for! If I could give it 6 stars, I would. Six years ago I attended a workshop on parent involvement with Don Davies and Karen Mapp as presenters and it changed my life. Since then I have been working in my children's schools and in the community to establish home/school /community partnerships. Over the years I have collected three files drawers full of materials, one full shelf of books and another full shelf of binders filled with things I downloaded from the internet. I've read it all and I will tell you that this book represents the very best of it in one concise, easy-to-read, and easy-to-follow volume.

It's all here: the research(presented in an approachable manner), background on the implications of No Child Left Behind on how schools must interact with parents, case studies, tools for evaluating where you are, instructions for creating action research teams( which I have used with great success), a section on the value of parents in the arena of advocating for school improvement, and a comprehensive list of resources which are accessible to anyone with a computer and a desire to improve their schools.

I never read Anne Henderson's first Bake Sale book, but I did have the opportunity to see her speak. Her depth of knowledge in this area is incredible and her ability to make the information accessible to her audience is exceptional. All of that comes through in this book. If you want better parent involvement in your schools, start by reading this book.
