This is a great commentary. In an expository manner, he explains each book of the Bible in detail. Wiersbe gives background information on topics that help make each passage more clear. It is always beside my Bible when I study! I highly recommend it.

I have found Wiersbe's commentaries very helpful in my study of the New Testament and in particular our recent study of Revelation - the Commentary on Revelation had many very helpful thoughts which I found very useful as I prepared Bible studies for my group.

As a Bible college graduate and youth pastor, I could not do without this commentary set. Wiersbe uses everday illustrations and gives a good explanation of the text. However as with many commentators, some difficult passages are skipped.

Extremely Useful

I use these all the time in my studies. Wiersbe writes at a level anyone can understand and provides many insights that his years of study and devotion have provided.
I would recommend both volumes to anyone wanting to gain a deeper insight into the New Testament.

I used this book for my college biology I and II classes. My favorite part of the book was animal structure and function. Although the writing in this book is on a pretty high level, nothing was left out--very complete. Sometimes it was hard to understand the chapters on genetics. Then again genetics is a hard topic. I used additional sources to clarify on what I learned in Raven's book.

I used AP Biology by Beck. This book was a helpful study guide. This was easy to comprehend. Made biology easier to learn.

However, what really did it for me was Patrick Leonardi's:
The Ultimate Study Guide for Biology: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations
This study guide comes in 3 volumes, make sure to get all three if you take biology I and II. If you are only taking Biology I, you can probably get away with only getting volume 1 and 2. These study guides had very good questions on every topic that is tested on in college biology. It was organized into specific sections, making it very helpful for exam preparation. It was so complete that it had the kind of questions that were asked on my exams. Don't go blind into an exam. These books are very helpful.

This is a great biology book. One of my favorite things about this book is the diagrams. I also like the sections on human origins and the individual sections on different organisms. This book is as good or might even be better then the Campbell biology-that speaks for itself

This is definitely the best intro to bio books out there. As a graduate student I got the chance to read lots of bio books and this one by far is the best. The chapters are well organized and easy to follow and gives you the depth needed to pursue any area of biology. When it was time for me to student teach this was the book of my chose. It expensive but definiely worth it to any biologist. The CD-ROM is also very good!

This is by far the finest Introductory Biology textbook I have ever had the pleasure of reading. Biology teachers, do yourselves (not to mention your students) a favor--make this the required text for your Biology I (and II) Class! Special Thanks goes out to Dr. Michael Hoefer...for requiring this textbook!

.....or if you had to travel back in time. I had this for my textbook in Biology back in 1987 and even then, .... well before the human genome was anywhere near being charted, let alone completed, this was a spectacular acomplishment. This book isn't riveting like say Druyan and Sagan's SHADOWS OF FORGOTTEN ANCESOTRS is, but it is as good as any biology textbook can possibly be. It has EVERYTHING you could possibly want to know about biology; from modern cell theory to ecology. All you have to do is look this over and you'll see why I highly recommend it. Does any other bio textbook even compare?

This book is a shortened version of the TV episode, "Blue's Big Birthday." It's interactive, as well as has the clue game of, "What does Blue want for her birthday?" Like the show, it features Steve, Blue, and the gang, and introduces Blue's turtle, Turquoise--although Blue doesn't name her in the book.

NOT MUCH TO NOT LIKE ABOUT THIS ONE.

This is pure "Blues Clues," pure and simple. Blue is having a birthday and we are asked to give a hand. The format is like that of the excellent TV show. The art work is quite well done, the text simple and easy for the little ones to follow. This is a fun book to read with your preschooler. This entire series is quite good and I do recommend them quite highly.

It's party-time for Blue --- it's her birthday! The "Blue's Clues" house is fully decorated, with plenty of balloons, confetti and more. We arrive just a little early, so we help to get everything ready for the party. And there's a game of Blue's Clues as well --- Blue needs a present.

This is a good story --- it's a lot like the TV show and the text is readable, but sufficiently complex that it should keep kids that are used to the level of the TV show engaged. Kids will also enjoy seeing Steve, Blue and all the fun party stuff.

We've all read books outlining the history and politics of such places as Las Vegas, New York and Hollywood. This book takes on a topic that is very rarely given any attention, the birth and life (and seedy underbelly) of Atlantic City.

I first visited AC when I was a boy in the late 1960's. My mother (now 85) always regaled me with stories of how glamorous AC was when she was growing up. I could never reconcile that image of the city with the one I saw, that of stark urban decay on the one side and the gleaming casinos on the other. The book lays it all out, from the earliest days to the politics that brought gambling to the east coast.

I read the book on a one week vacation in Brigantine Beach, the beach town right next to AC. I found the book in a beach house that my father-in-law had rented and read it in about 3 days. I found it fascinating. It is strange to say of this type of book that I couldn't put it down but it was virtually the case.

The book has it all, history corruption, politics, do-gooders, sex/affairs, the mob, entertainment, bootlegging etc., etc.

I was not aware that the book was being considered as the basis for an HBO series but I will be sure to watch it if it materializes. Read the book, you'll like it.

I got interested in reading this book when it was recently announced acclaimed film director Martin Scorsese was planning to use it as the basis for a his new proposed HBO series.
Published by an obscure regional press, and written by lifelong Atlantic City resident and attorney Nelson Johnson, Boardwalk Empire is a rather dry accounting of the turn of the century creation and political shenanigans of this tourist Mecca. While the book traces the birth and growth of the city, its decline and resurrection with the introduction of legalized gambling, there is nary a mention of Steel Pier, Salt Water Taffy or Mr. Peanut.
It will be interesting to see how Scorsese breathes life into these historical characters and events. Someday a vibrant novel will be written about this fascinating beach city once touted as the "world's playground". Unfortunately, this book isn't it.

Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, And Corruption Of Atlantic City by Nelson Johnson studies the history, politics, and personalities (both good and bad), that shaped and influenced Atlantic City during the years of the twentieth century. Ranging from corrupt crime bosses, to the influence of Republican politics, to the present day characterization of Atlantic City as a haven for entertainment and gambling, Boardwalk Empire is an absorbing, informative, and at times startling chronicle of an American city. Boardwalk Empire is a strongly recommended addition to Political Science and 20th Century American History collections.

I am pleased to be the first reader from Atlantic City to review this book. It goes without saying that it was of special interest to me. Throughout my life I have met several of the key figures in this book, so it was fascinating to learn more about their lives.

I enjoyed reading this book very much and would recommend it to anyone interested in Atlantic City. It was well written and researched. Nelson Johnson repeats facts when they become relative to another incident. This makes it much easier to keep track of the players and how one event or person influences another years later.

Johnson helps local residents understand why a unique racial tension still exists in this small northern city. This may not be apparent to readers unfamiliar with the area.

If I were to change anything about this book, it would be the last few pages. It ends with Nelson Johnson giving his opinion on the future of Atlantic City and how it can avoid its mistakes of the past. It is my feeling that this possibly belonged in a separate conclusion but not as the ending to the last chapter.

History buffs and political junkies will love this book.

This book has been extremely helpful to me in understanding the inner feelings of different character types. When I have difficulty knowing what to discuss, I will ask about these kinds of feelings and they have been so useful in describing to people what they might be feeling. I have recommended it to several colleagues as well. I wish it had been required in grad school. Very well done by a man who seems quite kind and understanding of deeper layers of the self.

Paradigm Shift
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2005-11-12
This book was the only text used in my graduate Psychopathology class. Five years later I have gone back again and again for use in my practice. Johnson brilliantly integrates most of the psychodynamic schools of thought to construct a "characterological-developmental" model of motivation, personality development, and treatment of psychopathology. He delineates components of character in terms of etiology, symptoms, cognitive styles, defenses, pathogenic beliefs, self and object representations, and affective characteristics. In addition he outlines treatment goals and objectives for each character in cognitive, affective, and behavioral areas. Johnson manages to bring psychoanalytic terminology down to earth and put it in existential terms (e.g. The Hated Child, The Used Child, etc).

Johnson's work constitute his attempt at constructing a paradigm shift in the sense that he proposes a cohesive integration of psychoanalytic developmental models as a move away from classical drive psychoanalysis. It is at once aesthetically stimulating and immanently useful. It is hard to agree with everything he says, but a paradigm shift is a very ambitious project.

I think it is pretty challenging reading--for the professional or the very dedicated. However, those who stick with it are likely to learn something about themselves (he speaks of "styles" rather than just extreme "personality disorders"), learn valuable lessons about parenting, and understand their relationships better. I agree with a previous reviewer's comment that it is a treasure.

This book clarifies the nature of personality disorders. I was researching narcissim for my Master's in Counseling program. Some of the terminology and concepts wer difficult to understand, but the overal picture is crystal clear. This book should be mandatory reading for all therapists. It is the most comprehensive work in modern times on the nature and range of personality styles. I wonder what the author is doing now?

I will never part with this book. It's an eye-opener like no other book on human nature that I know of. I wish I read this book when I was younger; it would make my life a whole lot better. I also would've been a better parent. This book should be mandatory reading for every couple that's expecting a child -- but also the adult children with charcterological problems.

I'm just out of words to convey my admiration for Stephen Johnson. The West Coast is lucky to have him and his practice there. I live in Boston and wish I had access to this brilliant psychoterapist as a student or a patient on behalf of somebody else, but who knows, maybe I need it too :-)

The book discusses the most destructive personality types and explains how those personalities were formed in childhood. It also talks how these people should be treated, and the obstacles that therapists and other helpers face with such individuals. Worth every dollar!

I would only ask Dr. Johnson what happens to the character of the person when they were overindulged as a child -- not excessively controlled or abused as is the case with most people who have personality disorders,

Also, the picture on the dust jacket of this book is quite silly and irrelevant -- bu that's the publisher's fault.

I've looked through several other College Survival guides, but this one is the best. Every tip is a list, and it takes much, much, more information then any other college guide and condenses it all into easy to read lists. In here it has the basics and much more supplimental information too. Get The Naked Roommate for a basic college survival guide in a more organized format. Then read College in a Can for all the things not covered in that book, much of it is more irreverent. This book feels more like a magazine and in between the really helpful college survival information are fun lists just to get you into the college mood like "Best College Movies".

You can't use this book for every decision you have in college, such as choosing a major or career (I highly recommend Cool Careers for Dummies), but it will give you an overview of those things so when you later get a book on those subjects and do more though research you can have that feeling of knowing the basics. This will eliminate that feeling of plunging in the middle without a clue.

Because this book isn't as structured as some, you can't buy this book without The Naked Roomate.

My daughter, a college freshman, read this book cover to cover. Lots of straight talk on everything from dealing with roommates and developing good study habits to handling sex and drugs, delivered in user-friendly bite-size chunks, rendered with wit and a real sense of what kids need to know. There's some entertaining fluff in between the no-nonsense tips and techniques for handling the transition to college life. Especially liked the 101-book reading list - a daunting but valuable heads-up on what it takes to achieve cultural literacy in the 21st century. A treasury of useful stuff for the college-bound (and for those aging parents who wish they could wind the clock back 30 years and try it again!).

Straight talk delivered with humor and real understanding of what the college-bound kid is about to face. Some of the lists are just for fun, which makes the rest of the "advice" -- like a daunting list of 101 books she should read by the time she graduates -- easier to swallow.

A Dead Man Speaks by Lisa Jones-Johnson is not only entertaining, but it has a very important message (unusual for a murder mystery) which the reader experiences as the story comes to a close, although you get glimpses of the message throughout the book as well. Congrats to the author on creating a murder mystery that includes this powerful message within its pages. I won't give anything away I shouldn't. While reading this book I felt like I could get into the hearts and minds of the characters involved because of the descriptive way their stories were told. What I liked most was that the author (Lisa Jones-Johnson) chose to have the reader view the lives of the characters as told through THEIR eyes/perspective and that made me feel like I really got to know the personality of the character on a more personal level. It was brilliantly written on so many levels and through the experiences of the characters raised my understanding a bit on the Civil Rights movement as well which I really appreciated. I highly recommend this book because it is not only entertaining (I couldn't put the book down) but it was thoughtfully written and highly worth my time.

Do yourself a favor...

This is hands down the best novel I've ever read. What makes it so? The intention of the Author to not only intrigue and entertainment, which she does most effectively, but her intention to provoke change in the reader.
Not since Shogun by James Clavell, have I been pulled into a novel and forced to carry it with me so I could take advantage of every spare moment to continue the journey. Not since Devil In The Blue Dress by Walter Mosley has a tale of the Black experience captivated me so thoroughly. And never, in any of these reading experiences have I walked away improved from the experienced. I'm talking about a tangible effective transformation based on the experience the finale of the book provoked in me. And do yourself a favor...don't read the end to see what I am talking about. Part of the process I experienced occurred because I resisted the urge to do so and flowed sequentially through the material and thus had the experience the Author intended and created the vehicle to accomplish.
Writing in multiple First Persons, Lisa Johnson gives us both the objective AND subjective experience of the major characters from her novel, an interesting juxtaposition of what we thought we knew from what we observed, and what the characters actually knew from their prospective, which results in a greater understanding of ourselves and what we might need to do to improve our self, as do the two main characters.
I think this book is the point of transition to the next area of literary focus, namely Human Transformation. So if you are almost tired of murder as the focus and subject matter of nearly all English writings in the fiction vain, and plan to stop reading the genre all together soon, then make A Dead Man Speaks your last stop along this road. I think you'll be glad you did.

I am an avid reader - and I love thrillers. I love books by Lee Child and James Lee Burke and everyone in between. This first novel by Lisa Jones-Johnson is very intriguing. And it certainly is worthy of the "in between" category I describe above. Her concept is so unique that at first I thought it might be contrived or the story line would be too obvious. But, happily, I was wrong on both counts. The characters are completely independent of each other- so much so that you will quickly visualize them as they take on their own form and personality. And for a first time novelist the consistency of the characters and the story line is remarkable. You can almost see this story "happening" before you as you read. It is definitely "film" material. The story itself, while simple, is seriously complicated by the nature of the basic theme-- a man unable to "let go" and die is trapped by the need to uncover his murderer and must "visit" those living persons who are involved in the crime to help guide them to the answers he - and they - seek - to solve the mystery.

I highly recommend this book to serious readers. It will "enter" you the same way the dying Clive January enters the minds and souls of those whose help he needs....And you will travel with them to unravel the clues and find the answers to this very fascinating story.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am currently reading it for a second time. I think this is the best book I have read in the last year. Jan Johnson articulately describes many of my own recent experiences in 'Enjoying the Presence of God'. She shares her own life as a fellow sojourner seeking to follow Christ with honesty and clarity. The chapter on Hearing God is the best I have read on this topic. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to go deeper in their realtionship with God and have purchased it for some of my friends!

Practical advice on "Living with God" here on earth.

In this book, Jan challenged me to include God in the "dailyness" of life. To recognize that He is with me as I drive to work and someone with questionable driving skills cuts me off. How do I respond with God sitting next to me? Does it really make a difference? It's beginning to, but I'm a slow learner. This book teaches without too much preaching. It's a book which will encourage you by example, not just by exhortation. Jan shares her personal struggles, defeats and victories that serves as a model that can help us understand the need to "practice the presence of God" every day.

I found this book incredibly refreshing and satisfying. Jan writes in a practical, yet very honest way. As a mother of 4 young children, I was searching for how to spend my life connected with God more than with the busyness and tedium of parenthood. This book has truly revolutionized how I relate to the Lord, and I find myself coming back to it and sharing it with others time and time again. It is the modern day classic of The Practice of the Presence of God. If we all learned this from the time we became Christians, I can only imagine the Christian life of our world would be dramatically different. My favorite part is about how she had invented her own version of spiritual correctness, but found that what she needed wasn't a great quiet time, but a God-centered lifetime. She gave up on getting it right in order to relish being His much-loved child. Profound, challenging, and incredibly refreshing. Worthy of your time and life.

This is a life-changing book. Jan Johnson has a unique ability to communicate how to live moment by moment in the presence of God. I highly recommend this book to those who have a heart for the Lord and a desire to touch lives through prayer.

This is the first book in the Riverboat Adventures series. This series is about a young girl who becomes involved in the Underground Railroad while living on her father's Mississippi River steamboat in the 1850s.

Since her mother's death four years ago, twelve-year-old Libby Norstad has lived with her aunt and uncle in their Chicago mansion. In that time, she has seen her father only rarely, because he is a riverboat captain on the Mississippi River. Now that Libby is older, her father has decided that she will live with him on his riverboat, the Christina. The year is 1857, and arguments over slavery are beginning to divide America. Libby has never had to think much about slavery, but she has always assumed that slaves are well-treated by their masters, and are better off that way than trying to make it on their own. But her new life aboard the Christina challenges her beliefs, when she discovers that Caleb, the ship's cabin boy, is active in the Underground Railroad. Caleb exposes Libby to the horrors of slavery, and she is forced to confront her beliefs about right and wrong for the first time in her life.

This book was well-written and full of interesting historical details, and Libby's character transformation was believable. I would recommend it to readers who are interested in this time period in history, and I look forward to reading the rest of the books in the series.

An Exciting Book!

I loved this book! Libby, Caleb, and Jordan feel like friends. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. And I didn't know this stuff about the Underground Railroad. Thank you, Mrs. Johnson, for writing such a good book.

12-year-old Libby Norstad had lived with her aunt for several years because of her mother's death, hardly seeing her father, captain of the steamboat Christina, and leading a sheltered life. But things change quickly, and Libby moves onto the steamboat with her father! She meets Caleb, the cabin boy, who seems different to Libby. He's a part of the Underground Railroad, helping slaves reach freedom, and along with Captain Norstad, he teaches Libby some important lessons about being free. In fact, Caleb and Captain Norstad take a fugitive slave, Jordan, on board to help him find his family. Unfortunately, the Christina is being followed by Jordan's former owner, Riggs. Libby and Caleb need to keep Jordan hidden from him, but is it possible with such a crafty man?
