I bought the first edition of this book about 11 years ago when I purchased my second Rott. Every dog owner owes it to their dog to be well informed about their dog's requirements, quirks, health issues, thraining requirements and characteristics - and this books gives you the info you need. For Rottweiler owners it is even more important to understand your breed because a Rottie out of control just reinforces the stigma attached to the breed - and they can be dangerous. Rotties are wonderful dogs and after owning Rotts for more than 20 years I have learned a lot of do's and don'ts. Do yourself a favor read this book before you get a Rottie and you and your dog will be so much better off. It includes wonderful advice on training and anything you should know to make sure your dog is well socialized, healthy and sane. I loved this book for its well rounded advice and explanations on the differend breed standards based on geography. It's basic enough for the beginner to get lots and lots of good advice even if you don't want to breed or show. Be aware of the downsides of the breed, health issues and the associated cost, exercise requirements, top dollar for good diet - it makes your dog live longer and healthier. Rotties, especially males, need a firm handler, NOT a brutal one but one that they can look up to. They are not a beginner dog and too many of them end up at the pound because yet another person thought they could have one without dedicating the right amount of time. If you want one, read this book first and then think twice. If you are sure you can take on the challenge, you will be rewarded with the most loyal friend you can imagine!

I bought a series of "upper price range" books on Rottweilers and this is by far the best of the bunch. This book covers every conceivable angle on Rotty's. It is a good sized book with lovely photography also. If you are looking for one book to cover all aspects of your Rottweilers life and history this is most definitely the best one. I bought one that was 4 times this price and was still no better!!...Enjoy....

Not a word is wasted in this short and powerful novel covering decades in the life of the Shirakawas, a Japanese family from a century ago, and offering an intense and fascinating look into intimate relationships and suppressed emotions. .

The story begins with Yukitomo asking his wife Tomo to choose a concubine for him, someone young and inexperienced who will also serve as a maid for her. Though Tomo is not yet 30 he has already tired of her and she has become used to his appetite for many affairs, while choosing a mistress for her husband can be perceived as an insult she considers herself fortunate to have control over what woman will be brought into her home and family life. As the years go on a second concubine is acquired, geishas visit frequently, and eventually the aging Yukitomo even takes his own daughter-in-law as his mistress. Through it all Tomo is left with the management of the estate and the care of the family.

Recommended for those who are interested in marriages involving concubines.

WHACK A MOLE heralds the welcome return of Chris Grabenstein's series featuring the pairing of narrator Danny Boyle, a rookie police officer in the beach town of Sea Haven, New Jersey, and John Ceepak, an older, more experienced cop. Boyle, on the cusp of adulthood, is the stereotypical newbie in thrall of Ceepak, the straight-arrow Iraq War veteran with a by-the-book code of honor and an encyclopedic range of knowledge. Readers of the previous novels may be somewhat surprised with the decidedly darker turn that WHACK A MOLE takes, making it much closer to SLAY RIDE --- Grabenstein's stand-alone thriller of 2006 --- than to TILT-A-WHIRL or MAD MOUSE.

Things get rolling in WHACK A MOLE when Ceepak discovers an old class ring on the beach while treasure hunting. He identifies the rightful owner and reunites him with his ring. It turns out that the owner had given the ring to a young woman who subsequently vanished some 20 years before. Ceepak is intrigued and starts to quietly investigate the long-ago disappearance, with Boyle in tow and observing. It is not long before other objects --- grisly objects --- from the past begin to show up in highly unlikely places.

It becomes obvious to Ceepak and Boyle that years ago a serial murderer had operated, undetected, in Sea Haven and is now getting ready to end his hiatus. Grabenstein offers up a likely cast of suspects and potential victims, even as Ceepak and Boyle discover that some of their greatest obstacles to solving the case lie not from outside the police department but from within, as their investigation is hampered by professional jealousy and efforts to cover up what were apparently cold crimes in the interest of preserving the financial success of the current tourist season. Yet Ceepak and Boyle soon find that the mysterious killer is leaving them no choice, as he not only has picked his next target but also has selected someone close to one of the team.

Grabenstein has crafted a solid mystery here. The manner in which the killer taunts the police is very unique --- I will never be able to walk into a resort town gift shop again without thinking of this book --- and the identity of the murderer, while plausible, will keep you guessing. I was absolutely sure I had his identity pegged and nailed, but I was totally wrong. This series has already won an Anthony Award in the course of its short history; after reading WHACK A MOLE, it would seem that Grabenstein, who undoubtedly will receive additional accolades, may need to add a trophy room to his domicile if he has not done so already.

Why I love John Ceepak and Danny Boyle

Review Date: 2007-06-19
John and Danny are back, working together in Sea Haven, New Jersey in Chris Grabenstein's latest book WHACK A MOLE.

This may be the most complex story yet, as John finds jewelry buried in the sand of the beach that leads back to the unsolved disappearance of a young woman. This mystery quickly leads to a series of murders, all of young woman during the same time period during the 1980s. Eventually all the crimes are tied to a ministry among run aways, and just when you are sure you know who the killer is, you find out how wrong you are!

But more than just the pure pleasure of the story, and the delight of being surprised at who the real killer is, I realized what it is that makes me love the characters of John Ceepak and Danny Boyle.

John, who grew up in a troubled family and made something of himself, lives a life of honor. He is a cop because it defines his life in a way he has always desired - to be a good man.

Danny, who grew up secure and with a full life of friendship, but no real ambition, finds in John Ceepak the guide who makes him a better man. It is not that Danny was ever a bad person, but John brings out the best in him.

Together, they are the very definition of what is good about people. The desire to find a way to live a better life, and be someone who is a benefit not only to their friends, but to their community and world.

You can't help but admire them, and they are also people you can truly like.

Personally, I can't wait for more adventures with these two young cops in Sea Haven. They make my world a better place.

Believe it or not, John Ceepak has a hobby. Of course, using a metal detector to find things buried on the beach definitely fits in with his personality. His most recent discovery is a class ring given by a man to his girlfriend before she vanished. No one knows what happened to this young woman, and naturally it peaks Ceepak's curiosity.

Ceepak's partner Danny Boyle is content to let Ceepak pursue this on his own time. They've landed the cushy job of guarding the sand castle contest, which basically means sitting in the sand all day.

But this dream assignment vanishes with a gruesome discovery. Ceepak feels it ties into the ring and the missing woman. It soon looks like there is a long dormant serial killer on the island. After all this time, is he set to strike again? Why now? And can Ceepak and Danny stop him before he claims his next victim?

This thriller series is something different for me, but, thanks to the resort setting, I love it. This book started off rather slowly with several plot points telegraphed well in advance. But it picked up in the second half and gripped me until the climax. Ceepak shows his softer side here, while Danny is obviously developing as a cop. I enjoyed that character development. These are characters that are growing and not staying stagnant.

Even with the slower first half, this series continues to entertain. The perfect summer read for thriller fans.

This novel is a must read! It had me hooked from page one. The genre is not something I would normally read; however, the historical nature of the plot made the book impossible to put down. I love how Lacombe had a female in the key role of Agent Apple, and I was fascinated by the way the author wove the plot and incorporated twists. I've already read this book twice and eagerly await his next novel.

I was mid-semester in a rigorous and reading-intensive grad program when I got Lacombe's debut novel. Tired and overwhelmed with too much reading and writing to do, I thought I'd read a couple pages of Winter Games as a break before getting back to the grind. I read until I fell asleep at 5am and finished it as soon as I woke up the next morning. Lacombe does a fantastic job of building and maintaining suspense; each page and chapter is fulfilling, yet simultaneously makes one crave more. Further, Lacombe successfully developed his characters across the novel to the point that I was deeply moved by the concluding dialog between Tim and his dad. This is an excellent novel that is truly a pleasure to read and I eagerly anticipate a sequel.....although I'll need to clear out my schedule in advance so that I can devote all my time to it guilt-free!

Winter Games is lively, fast moving, sheer entertainment, with some hilarious dialogue--especially in the character Leon. I'd definitely like to see Leon make an appearance in the sequel, as some kind of unsung hero. I like the way Lacombe revisits scenes from the viewpoint of different characters, although I had to reread a couple of chapters to understand the plot twists. The author kept me guessing throughout. This is an excellent first novel.

Strangely linked, in wild and sexy ways to mathematics, are jokes, observations, and topics I care about (surprise surprise)!!!

I found out how solid(?) the thinking is of certain, well-known intellectuals...compared to Humpty Dumpty.

I also found out about Alexander Graham Bell and his "fortunate blunder."

In addition, the book has Dave Barry's comments on the history of algebra which, I guarantee, you will not get in maths class.

And another thing...I found out about the Monty Hall problem through the world's best cartoon of it.

An absolutely jolly read!

This book is an excellent resource for learning and understanding ABC accounting. Unlike many web articles and white papers, Gary's book is a practical not academic approach from someone who has been there, done that, and has the t-shirt. It's filled with lots of explanatory diagrams which help to visualize the concepts presented and are useful when presenting on a high-level to executives under time constraints for reading. Chapter 1 clearly presents ABC basic concepts while Chapter 2 is a direct follow-on expanding the depth and breath of those basic concepts. Chapter 3 addresses the question that all senior management wants to know: Are all your trading partners worth it to you? Subsequent chapters focus on typical ABC modeling applications most relevant to organizations. Chapter 6 gives a very good cross-comparison of project/work order costing vs. ABC that is very helpful to project-centric organizations in understanding how ABC differentiates itself. Chapter 7 succinctly places ABC software in the reengineering software spectrum without getting lost in a technological morass. Chapter 9 addresses rapid prototyping for getting initial results from the methodology that can be tweaked iteratively to grow a more sophisticated ABC model. In conclusion, I highly recommend this book and look forward to Gary's "ABC Management - Making it Work" which is next on my ABC must-read list.

Review Date: 2007-01-24

The author did a good job of coming up with a user friendly book on Activity-Based Costing (ABC). ABC is critical in alerting managers of the major and subsidiary drivers of costs. Many companies, large and small, have benefited from employing ABC techniques.

The author methodically and succinctly discusses and explains activity based-costing, a management planning tool aimed at discovering what your true costs are by essentially assigning overhead costs to products and customers. The idea is that the more you know about your costs, the better able to compete.

The author rarely speaks down to his audience. In fact, Gary Cokins is able to continually build on what is presented previously in the book without endless looping. This makes the book readable by both the expert and novice in accounting. The novice will benefit from the detailed introduction into the concept of ABC. The author then methodically explains how costs can be allocated to products and services.

This is a recommended book that helps the reader to learn and comprehend the important technique of ABC that should enable companies to eliminate hidden costs and be more efficient and competitive.

After reading the reviews, I was looking forward to reading this book. I was very disappointed. It was predictable and trite. I was singularly unimpressed with the never-ending brawls. I got the feeling he was simply rewriting macho movie action scenes we've all seen ad nauseam. And of course, there had to be the beautiful women in distress that only Devlin could save. I found it interesting this "moral" man slept with the other woman character just hours after learning his love interest had been nabbed by the bad guys. But I guess we're supposed to accept that Jack Devlin just can't help himself and the ladies just can't resist him. This book is fine for those who enjoy this genre, I guess. From the reviews, I thought it was going to be a bit more cerebral and thought-provoking. It wasn't.

Mr. John Pollock's The Apostle: A Life of Paul is a must read for anyone interested in learning about the man who wrote such a large portion of the New Testament. The book wonderfully takes you from Saul's beginnings as an extraordinary intellectually gifted Jew and keeper of the law, to his conversion to Christianity to become Paul, and then his pilgrimage as a deliverer of the gospel.

All stops along Paul's way are covered by Mr. Pollock in this novel type book. That's not to say it's a novel, but rather it reads like a novel. Great details are given throughout the story providing valuable background on the customs and how people lived during Paul's walk.

If you are interested in further studying Paul outside what he wrote in the Bible I highly recommend this book.

This book is written like a novel, but the research is so extensive it stands halfway between fiction and a historical treatise. You feel like you're living the excitement of the early church as you move with Paul through his adventure-filled life.

While some judgments had to be made in order to tell it like a story, he even gives footnotes explaining other options at certain points. This is a wonderful way to get started in New Testament history.

While many books on Paul, the last apostle, tend to be very high-browed in their approach, Mr.Pollock excels at putting together a believable, and very readable, biography of St. Paul.

In short, he brings to light many nuances that most of us, as laymen, tend to overlook or misunderstand contectually in the course of our reading the epistles. I have some familiarity with W.M. Ramsay's work and Pollock follows his suppositions closely. What's commendable is that Pollock never tries to snow his reader. He's very upfront about how he approaches areas of conjecture.

A great primer on the life of Paul in a way that will make him a living, breathing human being and clarify his intent and motivations in writing these wonderful letters to his "children".

John Pollock has written what I believe to be an excellent biography on one of the most influential people (behind Jesus Christ, of course!) of the Bible - Paul formerly known as Saul of Tarsus.

Throughout the book Pollock includes biblical stories of Paul's experiences and writes the book in a biographical style. Included are the following events from Paul's life:

1. Presence at Stephan's stoning.
2. Conversion on the Damascus Road.
3. Various missionary journies.
4. Conflict with Barnabas over John Mark.
5. Relationship with Timothy.
6. Shipwreck and landing at Malta.
7. Final days in Rome.

As you read the book, you will see that Pollock is true to the New Testament accounts of Paul's life.

Read and enjoy. Recommended.

This book is an update to what the late Dr. John Walvoord originally wrote. The timing for this book could not have been more perfect. This book is very easy to read without getting too academic. It gives a lot of information and is easy to understand even for the average reader. Buy this book!

It is a wonderful book with extensive Biblical support for the ideas presented. It helps clearify many questions that christians ask (or should ask) themselves about the end times, what the Bible teaches about it and how christians should respond to the events they witness each day on the news. Highly recommended book.

Upon reading Armageddon, Oil, and Terror, I will say that this book is an easy read. This is the first Biblical Prophecy book which I have read, and I was impressed by the simplicity of the subject matter. The only criticism I have is that the book is quite repetitive, introducing the same common theme of America's oil addiction over and over again. While this warrants frequent attention, I feel it was a little overdone. However, despite this, I would recommed this book to anyone. I have to say that I learned a lot from reading this book.

"God wants us to grow in Knowledge..." We may not be financially rich, but we are definitely blessed with knowledge... I am so grateful to God for giving me the opportunities in reading books like these. They are priceless.

This book will change anyone's lives, as it changed mine. Before, I simply thought all are just merely coincidences. Until God intervened and made me realize things... One of His ways is letting me read these kind of books. I have read a lot of books and watched a lot of documentaries but this is ONE OF THE BEST. It is simple to read and practical. It reads like the Current Headlines. This is one of the books out there that is very easy to understand. Everything is excellent in this book(15 STARS!!). I would highly recommend this book to anyone. I know God has a purpose why He let me read this book.

I already gave copies to my loved ones and I ordered more as gifts.

Pls. buy this book. Together, let's spread the good news that our salvation is indeed at hand. Doing research and spreading the good news are some of the ways to Glorify God. TIME IS RUNNING SHORT, and God wants to save many lives. It's an honor to become one of God's instrument in saving souls. I already started sharing my blessing of Knowledge. Thanks God a lot of people do listen. Indeed, God is giving all of us a lot of chances to believe in Jesus' sacrifice.

As the book clearly supports, "THE RAPTURE OF THE BELIEVERS OF JESUS CHRIST IS THE NEXT PROPHETIC EVENT, AND IT WILL HAPPEN ANYTIME SOON." Just read the headlines... Increasing Crime Rate, Drugs, Gang activities, Global Warming, Natural Disasters, Nuclear weapons , Oil blackmails, Political Conspiracies, Pornography, Terrorism, etc. All of these are predicted in the Holy Bible, which was even written thousands of years before the birth of Jesus Christ!! Logic would tell us it's not just a simple coincidence. "THE FINAL STAGE IS SET FOR THE END TIMES." It could happen anytime soon. Besides, the Holy Bible is proven to be 100% accurate throughout all time. It never missed any of the 500+ prophecies that have been fulfilled. And it has been fulfilled LITERALLY!!

History is HIS STORY. God's story. Remember, God gave us free will. He is not bound by Time; therefore, He can see the future. God is doing everything to save our souls because He loves us so much.

Ever wondered why the Holy Bible is one of the only books that has been banned for public education? Because it is the TRUTH!!

"FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD THAT HE
GAVE HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON, JESUS
CHRIST, THAT WHOSOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM
SHALL NOT PERISH BUT HAVE ETERNAL
LIFE......." John 3:16

For those who wants to have a more solid foundation, watch this excellent documentary. Apocalypse and the End Times

An excellent book that dwells about ALMOST EVERYTHING. Mysteries of the Universe: A Revolutionary Commentary on UFOs, Aliens, Angels, Pyramids, Bible Codes, Reincarnation, the Antichrist...

Will You Survive in a World Gone Mad for Oil?

Will you be alive during the time that Dr. John F. Walvoord describes as The Decline and Fall of America?

In his 1974 publication, ARMAGEDDON, OIL AND THE MIDDLE EAST, Dr. Walvoord predicted that a worldwide shortage of oil will precipitate the initial scenario leading to biblical Armageddon. In 2007, Dr. Walvoord's son, John E. Walvoord, and co-author Mark Hitchcock revised, updated, and renamed the book ARMAGEDDON, OIL AND TERROR. Although senior Dr. Walvoord died in December of 2002, the revisers used additional material "...drawn from his other works and conversations during the last two years of his life."

The new book proposes that twelve, biblically predicted, major "events" will occur in a possibly-soon-to-come sequence leading to Armageddon. Reading about Event #1, the world's desperate struggle for oil, may open your eyes to the shocking possibility that life as we know it in the United States may dramatically change to that of a third-world country. The last of these twelve events will be followed immediately by the return of Christ to the earth.

As do most conservative, evangelical Bible scholars, Dr. Walvoord bases his teaching of prophecy upon a literal (grammatical-historical) interpretation of Bible Scriptures. This view leaves room for the interpretation of some words and phrases as being symbolic or figurative, but it insists the Bible means what it says unless allegorical meanings are obviously intended. (The "Beast," for example, symbolizes the Antichrist, but "one thousand years" means one thousand years.)

This very readable book is as timely and current as your daily newspaper. Whatever your view of prophecy, read this book now! It may change your life.

The best educational book on jazz. Covers ride cymbal, comping, solo ideas, uptempo, brushes and has a good play along cd. All of the written words do a fantastic job of putting things in context. Mr. Riley clearly knows his stuff. "Beyond Bop Drumming" is also a great book for more advanced jazz playing.

I'm simply going to reinforce what you may have heard elsewhere: this is as good a foundational text on jazz and bop drumming as you can find (along with Ed Soph's and Jim Chapin's books).

If you are interested in learning to PLAY jazz and bop on the drums, this book takes you from a level assuming some knowledge of the drum kit, little knowledge of jazz, and brings the two together in a very logical way.

I have milked four years (so far, many more to go) out of this book with regards to the density, depth and entertainment/interest-level of the material.

A Great Place to Start!

Like Jazz? Don't like Jazz? It doesn't matter. Whether you like to swing or not, this book WILL make you a better drummer and musician. The triplet feel is almost its own dimension in drumming and every drummer should master it. Although it is targeted for bebop jazz (basically faster swing feel as far as a drummer is concerned), this book will give you plenty of exercises and ideas you can incorporate in any genre. The exercises are great for independence and time-keeping, and offer very, very good fill and solo ideas.

As for aspiring jazz drummers, there is absolutely no question, GET this book. Any jazz professor at the university level would approve and it is used widely in music schools such as Berklee and Indiana University Music School (I graduated from IU).

The lessons on brushes are crucial and if you have never placed your hand on a brush, here is where you should start looking.

The accompanying CD is great as well and helps you to master a good swing time, listen to exercises being played, listen to compositions and play along tunes with a bassist or with a whole rhythm section.
