This book is great for people interested in practicing Buddhism and for those who just want to live a happier life. From the centuries-old wisdom of Shantideva, His Holiness The 14th Dalai Lama not only translates Shantideva's words he adds to them explaining the text and making it relevant to today's reader. The book concentrates mainly on ethical behavior and our relationships with others.

In this book the Dalai Lama presents an extended commentary on the The Way of the Bodhisattva, a well-known text of Mahayana Buddhism written by Shantideva, an 8th Century Indian Master. The premise of the Bodhisattva Path or Life is to attain enlightenment in order to serve and ultimately "save" others. As applied to everday life, it means living in as conscious and compassionate a way as possible - a life that concentrates on service to and awareness of other's needs.

While perhaps only a few can attain such an ideal state, one of the Dalia Lama's main points is that all of us can at least aspire to it. And regardless of one's feelings about this particular path, there is plenty of value in this book for those curious enough to look into it.

It's hard to pick up any book by the Dalai Lama and not take away something of great value from it, and this book is no different. However, in my opinion this book may be slightly less accessible to the non-Buddhist than some of his more recent books. This book sticks pretty close to doctrinaire Buddhism, and does not go to the lengths that some of the other books do in broadening the message for those of other faiths/practices. The concentration on reincarnation may strke most Western minds as exotic or peculiar, and might perhaps disguise the underlieing message. I would recommend Ethics for the New Millenium or perhaps The Good Heart for those not very familiar with Buddhism.

For those with a reasonable grounding and comfort with Buddhist thought, this is an excellent book.

Reading James Lileks after a long, hard day (or even in the middle of one) is like a refreshing drink of cool water. He's that good, and that good for you. Witty, self-deprecating, erudite, observant, mordantly intelligent and yet painfully aware of what a blessing it is to be alive...this guy is about as close as any modern columnist or humor writer can be to a modern Robert Benchley. I've been following him in columns, book collections, and website for years, and he never disappoints.

If you get a chance to get your hands on a copy of "Fresh Lies", go ahead and spent the rent and insulin money to get it. You'll be glad you did, and your pancreas can hold out a little while longer.

James Lileks is like a younger Garrison Keeler--and I mean that in a good way. He has the same smart sense of humor and the same midwestern sensibility. Lileks takes on everyday life writing about his fear of his espresso maker, shampoo, rock music, and all sorts of other things in the world around him in a way that is fresh and frequently hilarious. I read this book on the train and people kept staring at me because I was laughing so hard. The chapter entitled "Turn That Racket Down" (about pop music) in particular brought tears to my eyes. Lilieks writes from the point of view of those of us who missed out on being boomers (thank god), but who are to old to be part of Gen X. If it amuses you that the song "Instant Karma" ws used to sell shoes, but you don't understand rap music, you are the right age to enjoy this book

A few deserving authors on the Right have really made their bones in the wake of 9-11.Ê Bernard Lewis went from being well-regarded in the ivory towers to a prominent place on magazine covers as the leading public voice in the West on Islam.Ê Victor Davis Hanson went from being a distinctive but little known military writer to one of the most popular geopolitical columnists in America.Ê Christopher Hitchens was saved from a life of thralldom to the tenets of Marxism as he became a leading, if improbable, defender of Western values.Ê Daniel Pipes became just as much the celebrated scourge of Islam as his dad had been the scourge of the Soviet Union.Ê And, on the comedic front, we all "discovered" James Lileks.

If you've ever looked at a blog, particularly a war blog, you'll have seen--and hopefully followed-- innumerable links to Mr. Lileks's Daily Bleat.Ê But he's no recent phenomenon, as this collection of columns from 1994 shows.Ê Mr. Lileks has been toiling away in the vineyards for many years now, or in his case the pages of the Minneapolis Star Tribune.Ê The older satire here is just as funny and just as politically incorrect as his writing over the past few months has been, including rants about NPR, women's hair dye, the metric system, and the Taster's Choice couple.

Columnists, especially those who write humor columns, have a tough task, called on not only to be consistent but consistently funny.Ê Mr. Lileks is among the very best.

He can write. He can dance. And after 2 cans of beers, he can eructate a heart-rending belchadelic rendition of THE WAY WE WERE. I can't believe I'm living in a world where every goddam Salvation Army store contains 937 copies of VALLEY OF THE DOLLS and not one copy of FRESH LIES. As Kenneth Tynan said, it's enough to make a Manichean of me.

You have a decision to make, Smedley. You can either buy FRESH LIES---or I can program my Orson Welles android to sit on your face. The choice is yours.

Lileks is one of those guys who can put such a unique top-spin on mundane matters that it's transformed into the most clever, hilarious topic imaginable.

Short and snappy, Fresh Lies' essays and stories embody a respectable variety, from the silly to the artfully sincere. Keep it in your bag, for waiting in line or riding the bus, or the patio. Hell, keep it wherever you want- just keep it!

George and Martha is as humorous as Pooh Bear getting stuck in a tree! First, Martha makes split pea soup for George, but George hates split pea soup, so he pours it in his shoes. Second, Martha catches him doing this. She tells him that she doesn't like split pea soup either. She just makes it because she thought George likes it! Third, Martha makes cookies, so everyone is happy! George and Martha is one of my favorite books... and I'm in sixth grade!

These are great tales of friendship--even for beginners, like my 4 yr old preschool class. They love all the little stories. A few go over their heads, but they get the concept of the humor and companionship represented by these sweet, lovable, sometimes mischevious and selfish hippos. I've tried reading them the other George and Martha books, but this is their favorite. Gosh, thank God for James Marshall and his inventions!
(We have an old copy---the kids love the "pink cookies" Martha offers George instead of pea soup!)
Sampling:
George doesnt want to eat Marthas pea soup, so he pours it in his shoes
George knocks out his favorite tooth. Which is your favorite tooth?
George gets tired of Martha looking at herself in the mirror all the time; she even wakes up in the middle of the nite to do it. So he pastes a silly picture of her on her mirror....
There are George and Martha stuffed animals out there, too.
Any relation to George and Martha Washington?

This is a terrific book for anybody, even though its marketed as a young children's book. I love this book, (and I'm 12) and my parents and older sister, (who pretends not to) do too. This book chronicles the stories of two best friends, who just so happen to be hippos. They relate moral messages, but in a far from preachy way. The illustrations are colorful and the two hippos are shown as cute and cuddly. (awwww.... they sell these really cute George and Martha dolls somewhere) In short this is a great book for anybody. So read it!

George and Martha, two hippos who are best friends have amazing adventures in this easy to read, fun to experience set of short tales.

I think, no, I'm sure that my wife likes this book more than our children do, and our children love it. There are now several quotes from this book that have become common place at our home.

One is, "It's important to sample new products."

Try this book, you'll enjoy it thoroughly. The art work appears simple, but it's appropriately wonderful to the tone and stories of these two good friends.

5 stars, no question about it.

I really like the fact that you can open this book anywhere and find ideas to ponder and reminders to remember. It combines most essential metaphysical teaching about the ego, being present and letting go of the past. For someone who is well-versed in metaphysics, even on an intermediate level, this book will not teach new ideas, but rather, cause the reader to re-visit and examine the ones the reader has already accepted on an intellectual level. The only thing I didn't like is that the tone is a bit condescending in that it seems to assume the reader is hearing the information presented for the first time.

Because the presentation is more intellectual than experiential, I think it may be difficult for readers new to metaphysics to fully understand some of the concepts.

What I did like is the charming way J.B. Glossinger has of presenting his personal stories and anecdotes. I like the fact that he comes from a place of knowing both the struggles of the ego, and the spiritual euphoria that comes from suddenly realizing the freedom that comes when we are finally able to let it go, even if only for moments.

The author has a warm, witty and wonderful way of establishing rapport through his descriptive stories, which I would have liked to have seen more of in the book.

Overall though, this is a great book to keep handy on your personal philosophy and metaphysical reference shelf. It's easy to glance through quickly and find wisdom of value to remember.

It was wonderful to read an actual account instead of of the books I have looked through that are all about the medical side and medications. I felt like I was brought into Scott's world. His private thoughts, demons, and wellness. I recommend this to anyone who wants to know what it is like to live with such an uncertain illness!

In the academic landscape of victimization theories, deconstruction and post-modernism, here arises a singular voice that cuts to an all encompassing generative theory of civilization. It is a theory that explains why we buy Nike, why we go to war, and how we achieve peace. It would be better known in academia except this poor soul has the unfortunate timing of discovering a theory that objectively validates the truth of Catholicism, when Christianity (and even worse Catholicism) is out of vogue.

His theories have been described as "among the most profound intellectual discoveries of our time" and "a comprehensive vision of the psychological, sociological, political, and religious processes of sin and redemption"

If you are a thinker interested in social critique and a theory that has the power to restore Western Civilization - buy this book.

Girard may just be the most profound thinker in 2500 years

I don't think there is any doubt that Rene Girard is the most profoud thinker in the past 2500 years. I go back that far to include his transcendence of both Plato and Aristotle. Translate his insight into the human condition into the waning years of the 20th century--the most murderous century in human history--and we may yet survive the 21st century with some measure of humanity. Thank God we have a thinker who empathizes the human condition and has the ability to articulate it. Right now, he is as close to the "second coming"`as we have.As one of Shakespeare's characters put it: "I thank God for you, sir!"

One of the most interesting aspects of this good general introduction to the brilliant work of Rene Girard is the interview with editor James G. Williams, which touches on Girard's biography and his conversion to Catholicism. The other texts included here span the entirety of his long career as literary critic, groundbreaking anthropologist, and Biblical exegete. The texts address all facets of mimetic theory, from triangular desire to scapegoating, sacrifice, Satan, and the paradoxical place of Nietzsche in the history of mimetic anthropology.

A Strong Introduction to a Visionary Thinker

This is one book that takes time to fully digest. I first encountered Girard in 1998, and his work becomes more significant for me with each passing year. The basic ideas are pretty easy to grasp, but they have a nasty habit of reorienting any context you place them in. His scapegoat theory has something urgent to say to many disciplines: literature, religion, philosophy, psychology, and ultimately anthropology--Girard engages them all. His analysis of the Judeo-Christian scriptures is definitely the most illuminating that I have read, and there is evidence that his influence is spreading.

If you are looking for a thoughtful book that takes the Bible seriously without the tired liberal/conservative food-fight, this one won't disappoint.

The Key to All Mythologies
Helpful Votes: 52 out of 53 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-31
This is a remarkably complete introduction to Rene Girard's ideas. His key theory has the clarity and simplicity of a mathematical proof--desire is not an innate drive but a behavior we learn through imitation (mimesis). When we mimic our model's desire for the same object, violence breaks out. Through ritual scapegoating, human communities manage to divert this violence by directing it at a random victim (thus hiding its real source in mimetic rivalry). According to Girard, this mechanism is at work across all times and cultures, and shapes the plot of nearly every major novel. For those with a suspicion of grand unifying theories, his idea raises many questions. Even more controversial is his belief that Christianity brings an end to myth by exposing the scapegoat's innocence. Christ doesn't die as a sacrifice to God for human sin; instead, the crucifixion reveals the fiction at the root of all sacrifice--the victim's culpability. This helps to humanize one of Christianity's more troubling doctrines, but it also asks us to believe that the authors of the New Testament understood the workings of mimetic desire 2000 years before Girard articulated the theory. Read the book and come to your own conclusions. Whatever you decide, after reading Girard you'll look at myth and religion with new eyes.

I then let my girls color the corresponding activity page together. It is wonderful seeing them learn to cooperate with each other as they decide who will color what. I highly recommend this book. I plan on getting the rest in the series as they get older, then purchasing another copy of this one when my two younger daughters turn 2 and 4. It is well worth the money. You can then give the book to a grandparent as a keepsake, when your daughter is done coloring it all.

I had Mr. Eder as a Professor for two Philosophy classes, so I knew a bit of the background behind his daughter's murder but I never completely grasped the tragedy of it. I cried like a baby in a few places...Mr. Eders' memoir is the heart-wrenching story of a father living his worst nightmare; the dissappearance and murder of his only daughter. I couldn't put it down until I had finished the book. My favorite quote from the book is so classically Eder: simply put yet powerful..."I teach the great Philosophers, study the great ideas, and search for God." Thank you for introducing me to this book, Professor.

As a former student of Mr. Eder's (and the former-Mrs. Adrienne Eder), I felt an instant connection to this book & the author. As a student, I knew that something bad had happened to their daughter, but I was not aware of the extent. This book is provacative, poignant and I must commend Mr. Eder for having the courage to write it.
As a teacher, myself, I know that it is hard to put your heartfelt personal life out there for students (let alone others in the general public) to see...this crime was so horrific, that I can't imagine how this man managed to inspire students the way that he did everyday. He has been through Hell and it is inspiring to see how he and his family have carried on with such dignity and courage.

James Eder has written a thoughtful and provocative memoir. His tone is candid and at times brutal in his frank inner pain. To read him is to discover our own worst fears; to walk with him is to realize the immeasurable power of the human spirit. The book aches in the very pages, but there is much beauty and craftsmanship in Eder's stirring journey. Ultimately, Eder's story is necessary reading for all of us.

I remember vividly the day when they found Vicki's body, I cried like a baby. I suppose that was odd considering we were not good friends, but just aquaintances. Yet I cried like a baby none the less, the hurt and sorrow were real. After reading this book, the sadness all came back.
My heart goes out to Mr. Eder, and I thank him for sharing his terrible ordeal with us.

Couragiously Written and Extremelly Insightful

This book is amazing! I couldn't put it down! Eder is beautifully spoken and writes with pure honesty, emotion, and detail. Of course I'll never know what it's like to be in his shoes but this book comes close. He makes the intense thoughts of a father, husband, teacher, and human being during a time of crisis so real to the reader. There are things in this book that we can all relate to like the loss of a loved one, questioning of your worthiness as a parent, and questioning your relationship with God. Eder raises the questions we have all considered at one point in our lives - How can an all loving God allow such horrible things to happen? and Are our troubles in life punishments from God? I highly reccomend this book to anyone and everyone. The content is universal wether you believe in a God or not, wether you believe the world is an evil place or a good place, we all have something to gain from understanding the experiences of others.

When I decided to start collecting coins again five years ago I heeded the advice I heard from many, 'Buy the book, before you buy the coin' and it has paid off time and again. Douglas Winter, a recoginized expert in American Gold coins, and James Halperin have created a book that is a MUST HAVE if you are collecting Carson City Gold coins. Fact filled, informative and up to date, this is a book that is the BEST resource when it comes to Gold coins minted in Carson City. I use it time and time again and never go to a coin show or attend an auction without consulting it first. Bravo Winter and Halperin!

Over the past year, I have become acquainted with Mr. Winters books on gold coins. I found them to be insightful, informative, and just plain fun. Unfortunately I was unable to get a copy of his first Carson City gold book, Gold Coins of the West. When I found out that he was updating, I immediately put in an order. When I finally got it, I read most of the book the first night. The first part of the on the Gold Rush and the founding of the Carson City Mint, and its subsequent political demise was interesting history, even for the non - coin collector. If you have any desire to learn about Carson City gold coins, this book is invaluable and will probably become the ultimate source book. The book is full of insights about the market and availablity of Carson City gold. If you have an interest in U.S. minted gold coins, the books by Doug Winter are an absolute must. Even though you may not be able to afford the coins themselves, Mr. Winters' books are the next best thing.
The only disappointment I have with this author is that he hasn't written a comprehensive, all-inclusive, volume on U.S. gold coins. Hopefully, he will....SOON!

As with other collectors of Carson City Gold Coinage I too eagerly awaited my copy to arrive. To have the knowledge and experience of Doug Winter at your fingertips, when considering the purchase of any CC Gold, provides the information needed to be an astute collector. His indepth analysis of each denomination by date is invaluable when making a determination whether a particular example is below, average, or above average for the grade and to what degree it is a date and/or a condition rarity. This book is a must have for anyone who is interested in the collecting of Carson City Gold Coinage.

Caesario Jose Payan-Serrano is a thief. He meets Officer Nathan Reilly at a party. Nate and Caesar have a bit to much to drink and spend the night together, but in the morning, they vaguely remember each other. That's when Caesar discovers that Nate's a cop and he takes off running. A few days later, they run into each other again. Caesar tries to blow Nate off but it doesn't work and Nate ends up blowing Caesar off instead. A criminal and a cop can't have a future together but Caesar and Nate can't seem to stay away from each other either.

Caesar finds himself in need of a cop's help and turns to Nate. Nate has no choice but to help Caesar, because if he doesn't, a heinous crime will go unpunished. Nate and Caesar's lives are at stake when certain individuals want them to mind their own business, and their hearts are at stake when their feelings for each other go beyond attraction.

Opposites attract and the bad guy wins in The Good Thief. James Buchanan pens a terrific story with two great characters and an intense storyline. Caesar holds no guilt about being a thief. I never once thought badly of him. In fact, I think I fell as hard for him as Nate did. Nate is a cop through and through. He's loyal, honest, and takes his job very seriously. He's so sexy. It's so much fun watching these two fall for each other! The Good Thief is a hot, romantic, and exciting.

This man knows how to make a love scene sizzle. Not only does the story drag you in kicking and screaming, but his two main men are to die for. They were real, gorgeous, and believable. Loved the irony of the cop being the bottom...
the stuff of good fantasy. well done, James! Buy it.

The Good Thief was a wild and fun ride from the first chapter. Liked the characters, story, writing, and well, even the intimate details.

I read this author's story COYOTE CROSSING (also 5 stars) in the ARRESTING DEVELOPMENTS e-anthology from Aspen Mountain Press and loved it so much I decided I needed to give one of the author's other books a shot. So I checked out the backlist, found one of the longer books, and started reading. And then I couldn't put it down! This book is hot from page one.

Cop drama/suspense is not usually my cup of tea. THE GOOD THIEF is based on all the elements that usually make me roll my eyes and quit reading. One night stand, relationship between the Law Enforcement Officer and the Crook With a Heart of Gold, good cops/bad cops, political controversy, guardian/ward romance...all the things that, in the hands of a lesser author, would amount to nothing more than a bad episode of CSI. So how does James Buchanan make it work? Talent, that's how.

The plot here is good and solid. It's fairly simple, nothing too uncommon or outlandish, and the progress is straightforward and pretty true to real life. James doesn't try to reinvent the wheel here, but instead works with the familiar and keeps it real. I love the author's word choices. Buchanan uses everyday language, peppered with the Spanglish that I hear every day. But where this author really shines is characterization.

James Buchanan knows how to write amazing characters. Caesar and Nate practically jump off the page. I have a hard time picturing characters in my head when I'm reading a book, but I had no trouble picturing Caesar and Nate. They're incredibly real, and though their situation is a bit dramatic, their reactions to each other and the world around them are very appropriate.

There's no overwrought soap opera angst, no Big Misunderstanding, no crack psychology, and no cheesy public service announcements in this story. It's a suspenseful cop drama, but more than anything else it's a romance. This author obviously understands love and relationships, because I felt myself really relating to the two men and their love for one another.

This review isn't complete without a quick mention of the love scenes and the chemistry in this story. I felt like I was intruding into something very special and private. The love scenes are incredibly hot and sensual, yet so intimate and emotional that I felt like a voyeur. Even that first steamy encounter sizzled with electricity. There are some hot hookups in this book, but nothing cheap or trashy. Their sexual encounters are all intensly emotional, charged with energy and testosterone, and filled with promise.

It's really rare for me to actually connect with authors and their characters, so this book was a real treat for me. I plan to look up James Buchanan's entire backlist very soon.

Good cop, bad ...

Excellent read here! If you want to find two protagonists who are less alike and most likely NOT to make a go of a relationship, it is hard to find a better combination than an honest (and hot, hunky, muscled, tall, blond and handsome) cop (Nate) and a hard, lean, black haired, sexy, Hispanic, professional housebreaker/thief (Caesar). How can such a pair make it work as a relationship (aside from the continuous, HOT, passionate sex)? Only if one of them is willing to make a major change: either the good cop goes bad (so not going to happen) or the thief finds a way to make necesssary changes in his life and goes "straight," so to speak (fortunately not his sexuality). That's the crux of this novel and I actually thought Buchanan did an excellent job first of developing a steamy hot, passionate attraction between two very unlikely candidates for "couple of the year." Then, he put them under considerable conflict both between the two and with the two against outside forces and gave the thief a chance to redeem himself. Then the stress of the situation strained the "relationship" so that the reader doesn't really know whether or not a happy ending is actually going to come of all this stress. All along the way, the two hunks find their overwhelming attraction for one another getting in the way, then getting stronger, then leading both to look for ways to stay together. Damn fun read: the two characters, flaws and all, are both real, the conflict between the two is real, the stress from an outside event is highly credible in the way it affects everyone in the book, and the sex is awsome. Good romance story, good action adventure story, good erotic story, good characters. Great read. Go for it.
