"Hup", is a very good book to read to teach the reader how to train their dog the correct way. I'd suggest to get and read before you get your puppy so you do it correctly the first time. Well written and explained.

I purchased the second edition since I have the first. Unfortunately, unless you are into the recent changes in the cocker spaniel field trials and field bred cockers, there is little or no changes. It is practically the same book. Since the first edition can be found in hardcover, and is a top gundog book, I would recommend buying that one unless you are interested in the cocker spaniel as a field dog.

This is the main flushing spaniel "handbook" that we send off with all our puppy clients. Mr. Spencer has a wonderful knack for spanielling and explains the ins and outs of a working American spaniel, minus the politics, in a simple manner that even our British cousins can appreciate. It is a book that will never go out of style and should sit on the shelf of every flushing spaniel owner's bookshelf.

This is a must have book for all spaniel, or hope to be spaniel owners. It is exceptionally easy to follow and even fun to read. Anyone with some time, patience and this book can train a very good dog. The first part will help anyone who is undecided on which spaniel would be best for them.

JR Cash was one of the most fantastic men to ever live, and he gave the world the gift of his voice; through song, tv and now this: an audio recording of the NKJV bible.
I got this for Christmas and it really helps make reading the bible easier. Cash has the perfect voice for this, and it isn't all flashy, Johnny makes it fantastic without all that Hollywood crap.
I never thought I would own an audio bible until i saw this, and now I will never even have to think of getting another!

This is a great audio Bible. No distractions, just the Word of God being read aloud. I find it odd to have a Bible that is covered with pictures of Johnny Cash - I got it because I wanted an audio Bible that was not dramatized and did not have music. All the other voices I previewed sounded really annoying to my ears. Johnny Cash had an excellent reading voice and is easy to listen to.

The Voice of the Man in Black

Here's what absolutely amazes me about Johnny Cash -- and the reason that, after more than 30 years in journalism, I have to admit I still have such an emotional reaction to this country singer -- is that his famous struggles with temptation and faith have directly crossed over to the next generation.

There's something as honest as a razor blade about Cash. His "man in black" garb clearly wasn't merely a costuming choice for his stage act. His concern for the poor and marginalized clearly wasn't just another star's hobby. In fact, I went back and purchased DVDs of some of Cash's TV shows, because I'm so intrigued by this man, this artist, this man of faith.

I own dozens of Bibles and a half dozen audio Bibles -- but it's the Cash disks that keep winding up in my van with me when I'm traveling. There's nothing flashy in this recording, which was done back in the 1990s and doesn't have any of the Hollywood special effects that are popular in current audio Bibles.

This is the New King James Version so some of the phrases sound a little stilted to our ears, unless we've stayed with this majestic old rendering throughout our lives. But that's not a bad thing. I'm not a King James reader, on a regular basis, but there's something about the poetry of this particular translation -- coming to my ears in that voice of The Man in Black, knowing some of the incredible spiritual journey that he pursued through these years -- and the overall effect is mesmerizing.

This is a great way to listen to the Bible. Johnny's chill tone and deep weathered voice makes this one of the best and most enjoyable audio bibles around. I would imagine that many of the most hesitant to bible listening could soften up to the surprise of Johnny's voice reading the scriptures. Cash's coolness, rough, and relatable history that many of us can identify with, helps most anyone have "ears to hear." It is awesome how Jesus can change anyone so remarkably. Johnny Cash's testimony of his radical change by Jesus' words can be read about in his book, "When A Man Comes Around".

The best.

The guy proclaims the Word of God beautifully and simply. If you're not much of a believer, it just is done well and straight forward.

The New King James Version is more modern English (without all the "unto's" and "ye's" and "thou's"). Easier on the ears. Also, no accompanying music. Just him reading slowly and with understanding.

The above comments are in comparison to James Earl Jones reading the New Testament. The guy has a voice like no one else, but the original King James version language- lame backround music - and a whispery, momontone reading (if you can imagine James Earl Jones doing that) - makes this far inferior to Johnny Cash's.

Excellent Work!!!

No frills or fancy workings, just plain old Johnny Cash reading the New King James version of the New Testament. It's straight-forward and understandable, delivered in a matter-of-fact tone that leaves interpretation open to your own mind. Johnny Cash does his best to read without flair and dramatics, allowing the words to speak for themselves.

I enjoy unwinding after a long day by throwing on some headphones and relaxing to the soothing words of JC.

this set was everything i could have hoped for. it was amusing that someone reviewing this product would describe Johnny Cash's reading voice as "wooden" ... have they never heard him speak or sing ? if you have heard his voice you know what to expect. personally i find his voice rich, comfortingly real, and ideally suited to a project such as this

there is no annoying music in the background, which is ideal for people who suffer from diminished hearing, like me, or people who find such unwelcome additions to be nothing more than a distraction

his reading is often described as slow, but i think it might be better described as casual - about the speed he spoke in public or on TV : he typically seemed unhurried when he spoke, but having a "script" allowed him to talk faster than i'd anticipated. his cadence is not too fast, just faster than i had been led to believe

the books are broken up into chapter-length files (important if you wish to rip to MP3 files as i've done) and sometimes span from one CD to another (important if you're considering getting this for an elderly person who might need to search for the next CD, as well as possibly complicating the operation of a CD player for a person with visual limitations)

this is a wonderful product and i would gladly purchase it again. the only "improvement" i can suggest is offering an MP3 version for people who may lack the technical ability to convert the CDs themselves (they are Legion)

I bought this book because I had just upgraded my computer to one with Windows Vista and wanted to learn the ins and outs quickly. It's been such a great tool in learning all of the new things I can now do!

Also, I teach introductory class online for first time college freshman, most of whom are older, non-traditional students, that covers study skills and basic computer skills (such as surfing the internet and attaching files to emails). Because they're just starting their college careers, many of them are looking at buying new computers and I've recommended that they all purchase this book to help them pick out and use their new computers.

Excellent Book!!

I found out about this book after a friend referred me to it. I'm not the most technical, but was able to understand everything he discussed. He took the time to explain everything in a way that made complete sense. My computer is getting pretty old, and I'm just about ready to get a new one. I'm sure I'll have this book right at my side when I get it and to help me move everything to the new computer!

I would definitely say that this book is worth it if you're looking for a little help on your computer

I've been using Windows XP for years now and just got a new computer with Windows Vista Home Premium on it. There's definitely a big difference between those two versions of Windows! I've become very good at using XP, but wanted to make sure that I got Windows setup right and wasn't missing anything. I looked at a couple Vista books and I'm happy that this was the book I chose. It's very straight-forward and to the point and leaves out a lot of the over-technical garbage that most home users wouldn't even care about. The author does, however, hit on everything I needed to get my computer running right. He discusses the specifics of the security software to run (like comparing different vendors) and he talks about some of the options for configuring backups (including some of the newer online backup services... this was excellent!).

I will also say that I already needed one of the chapters when my computer wouldn't boot up. I had a similar problem a couple years ago on my XP computer and HP had me reload the whole computer. I'm glad I thought to check this book first because I came to find out that there are some MUCH easier options in Windows Vista and was able to get back up and running in about ten minutes! So, that in itself made this a great purchase in my opinion - I probably saved a couple days worth of time in that alone!

Great book and definitely worth it!

This is the first time I desire to give a commend for the book. I am one of the Theravada Buddhism who is practice Vipassana Meditation, and try to observe/witness my mind every moment the best I can. This book is talking exactly the same technique or the same process that many (or all) Vipassana Meditators are experiencing. I give this book 5 stars. If whoever is practicing Vipassana Meditation or other meditations they should consider try to read this book with open mind. When I read this book made me feel like I am reading many Buddhist Vipassana that I read in Thai, Lao, or Vietnamese Thich Nhan Hanh Books. I know many Christians or others who follow Jesus (I am humble myself to him too) might not agree with the comments I says here, but if any body who is enlightened will agree with this. As the Buddhist History said that, Buddha is a man, but he is an awaken man. Empiness/nirvana is the same meaning as "in the stillness thou shall know me, or God is in your heart". Because as the bible said about Eve and Adam ate the Poison Apple and knew/know every things in this realm. So, now God said that each human being must drops all the three of knowledges and for buddhism is to empty every emotions just witness the thought and feeling that keep arising like the Wheel or Samsara. So then God with us and watch us and be with us at each/or that every moment of our life, we watch and aware of our breath. Breath in and out moment by moment, or another techniqe just Aware/ FEEL the sensation of each of YOUR BODY MOVE and WITNESS YOUR THOUGTS ARISE, then GOD who is the observer WITH YOU at that moment and ALL THE TIME. So, Best Book to read over and over for Meditator who still in the process of his/her journey to Enlightment. To me it does not matter what religion a person follow the end of the searching for their own God is in your higher self. May God Bless Us All. Peace/Nirvana

This book represents a quantum leap forward in the consciousness of mankind as we enter the "Age of Aquarius." Old paradigms of lack, punishment and dogma are set aside. In their place are non-judgemental, unconditional, infinite love and abundance. This ground-breaking book appeals to the intellect, explaining the whys and wherefores of the new understandings of light consciousness. It touches the heart, allowing an opening to more love...not only romantic love, but the unfathomable love of our Creator. Physical concerns are addressed, including the perennial favorites, diet and exercise. Readers are shown how to non-judgementally love themselves, filling themselves with the true light and love. In addition to enlightening on mental, emotional and physical levels, this book takes a quantum leap forward in the spiritual realm. Rather than the traditional view of a separate, distant God, this book introduces a more accessible, "user-friendly" God. Prayers and affirmations appear in bold-face print to allow the reader to make a permanent shift in consciousness through regular repetitions. Be sure to also check out the "prequel" book, Pathways to Inner Peace.

The messages Rev. Webb channels and records in this book are powerful and riveting. And they come through in a compassionate, gentle, non-judgmental way. Yet, they always make perfect sense. In my previous spiritual endeavors I have never found any guidance that ever rang so profoundly true. As I take in the teachings the Masters give, I hear myself saying "of course! of course! It's the perfect explanation!" Without exception, every area touched on becomes enlightened to me: why we are here, what daily life is all about, what relationships are for, the true purpose and reality of sexuality, the understanding about how we have developed blockages and how we have created pain and suffering based on guilt, and the gift we have in using emotional release to heal and transform all these areas. This news is exhilarating. I am set free; I soar with hope, understanding. I am lifted up to new horizons. All my relationships and so-called "problems" now take on new meaning-- they are my own manifestations to bring me to new levels of understanding, healing and love; to bring transformations into my life and help me know a stronger connection to God. As I have allowed this transforming Light, this grace of God, to touch my life, my health, affairs, relationships and thoughts have shifted and healed. I have witnessed instantaneous healing of an injury, dramatic transformation of destructive personal patterns, and the lifting of family problems . All my life issues are healing and I can now assert my boundaries and speak my truth with confidence, yet compassion for others. I have been able to turn around what I had deemed to be unhappy situations and relationships through release, prayer, meditation and affirmation work. My "psychic" experiences have intensified and increased. Most importantly, I have a new sense of my own power and my own right to joy, good health and peace. I have come to know that God's will is that we have all our hearts' desires, that the universe supports us, that we always have help and protection. Rev. Webb shows great courage and grace in disclosing personal details of his life so that others may relate and know that they too can transform their lives. I have seen him at his work and it is obvious he takes seriously his own thorough and continual spiritual progression. He models the wisdom he channels. Notwithstanding his great achievements - academically, professionally, personally, and otherwise -- he has struck a stunning balance between humility and self-love. Rather than work from his ego, he empowers others and respects their right of self-responsibility. He serves with sincerity, compassion, humor. I honor him for all the gifts he has given me through this book, the chanelling sessions, and his example, and I honor him for stepping out as pure, powerful channel of these liberating messages. For all of us can now be blessed with these tools to heal and transform our lives and the world.

This bible is a perfect size, not to big or small and the print is not large not too small, and there is something about the way in which it is bound that when it sits open it fits comfortably in your hand and the pages stay open until you change them, you know how some books are bound so when you open them you have to keep your hand on the page to keep it open, this is bound so that it stays where you open it, that is very important to prevent frustration. Enjoy

Beautiful Binding, perfect size, refences. My favorite by far! Perfect Bible!!!

As far as English translations are concerned, I prefer the NKJV. It is a Nelson translation, so not all publishers carry it. For further reviews on the translation itself, there are many resources for comparison. I tend to read the same verse in various versions for comparison on personal preference. NKJV doesn't include pronunciation markings within the words, which I consider very distracting. If I am looking for a pronunciation guide in a KJV Bible, rather than markings within the words, they are hard to find. Also, I find the "thee" and "thou" and "eth" and the end of verbs shocking to read and harder to read with a "flow" (kind of interrupting). The NKJV takes care of all those complaints without detracting from the meaning of the passages.

I will proceed with reviewing the unique features of this Bible. It is a very comfortable size (perfect from my perspective). It is large enough for nice print size, and small enough for comfortable weight due to the slim binding. It has a reference column, which I was looking for in a slim line Bible. It also comes in genuine leather, which I think is a must for a long lasting Bible. I purchased it as a follow-on Bible to my Nelson 3016 (0785200304) - see my review for that one - I do love that Bible, but this one meets the only weaknesses of that one, without compromising the nice features. Nelson has a slim reference edition, but they don't have a genuine leather version for it, which in my opinion is a huge miss. If no references are desired, the Nelson 3016 is the best.

I bought the Burgundy version of this Bible for myself because my Nelson is black and I wanted a different color. I also bought the black one for a friend. The Burgundy color has a more red hue than purple. I really like the color. Before I ordered, I went to a local book store and saw the color of an NIV Holman slimline (they didn't have the NKJV in stock), and this is the same, so I am glad I saw the color first (it is hard to describe a color). I have posted photos to help visualizing product. It has a shiny finish with a grooved random looking pattern to the cover (both for the Black - 1558194371 and Burgundy - 1558194398 versions). One interesting tidbit is that the Black version comes in a red box, while the Burgundy version comes in a green box ... go figure. The concordance is identical to the Nelson mentioned before. The font is too (maybe a bit less spacing, since there is more text per page). The maps are nicer in this Bible than the ones in the Nelson. I do like the verse-by-verse format this Bible has (as does the Nelson) because I can find verses faster than looking through the middle of a paragraph. The tone of the red letter ink is nice and readable (not pink).

The only things that I have noticed as negatives (not quite) are:
1. The top page margin is wider than the bottom margin, but although it is kind of awkward at initial impression, I will use it in the event of taking notes ;-).
2. The leather is a bit stiff (at least more than my Nelson), but I hope that it will soften over time, since another friend has had one for a while and it is softer. It doesn't quite open flat yet as my Nelson does.
3. Some pages have a dimmer print (as with less toner), but not many.
4. The genuine leather only comes in Black and Burgundy. For me it's not bad, but tan or brown options would be nicer for some other people.

Finally, I must admit that I am a hard buy. I ended up buying 4 Bibles prior to this one and returned them all. I have several study Bibles, but for a daily (non-Study) Bible, this is the best!!

The NIV Study Bible is very popular with adult readers because of its easy readability and the excellent study notes on every page. This wonderful New Adventure Kid's NIV Study Bible is a colorful, involving study Bible with many inserted pages that are personal to young kids, relating to their lives and families. There are question pages, lists of facts interesting to kids by category, and a page in the front where the child can write his or her name, who gave him/her the Bible, and for what occasion. I found this Bible for my youngest godson (age 9), and his mother tells me he is reading it often! I'm getting it for my daughter who turns eight this summer, and I'm certain she will love it! Your kids 8-12 will also, whether they are already Christians, simply interested, curious, or actively seeking to learn more about God's word. God Bless anyone reading my review- hope it helps you made a decision!

You can call me StoryMaker. The New Adventure Bible is a great Bible for kids. The features help kids like me understand the Bible! It also has just-plan-interesting features. They also explain each book of the Bible, witch helps you learn too. Plus, just plain Bible text is good. Bibles are good books, even without a bunch of features. The features really help me understand and the features are just plain fun! Overall, if you are/have a kid who wants to understand the Bible, this is a great choice. Signed, StoryMaker. "Gotta trust the kid's review!"

This Bible is great for young readers and will keep them going well in to High School. There are many graphics throughout this Bible and special interest comments that explain why people did things the way they did or why they wore a particular type of clothing. Our church gave this New Adventure Bible to all children graduating into the third grade. The NIV translation is pretty understandable to young readers. Each book has an introduction that is designed towards the young reader. There are also special pages to enhance a childs understanding: for example in addition to the actual text of the ten commandments - is a special page with pretty graphics that re-word the commandments in language for youth. A special page explains "How to pray" - another summarizes Old Testament Prophets, and yet another page called "Getting to know Jesus" helps kids understand what it means to be a Christian. Just like the 'grown up' Bible - this book is a Red Letter edition. My fifteen year old still loves this Bible.

Lazy Daisy is such a great book for kids of all ages -- mainly because every kid can relate to it. What kid isn't messy? Great story line - very imaginative. I bought one for my niece and then a week later I ended up buying 5 more for all of my friend's kids. You should also take a look at Mr. Olson's other book, The Thunderstruck Stork. I ended up buying 5 of those too.. haha

It's always a bonus when adults actually enjoy the books they read to children and Lazy Daisy is definitely one of those books that entertains both groups. The rhyming verse is very funny - David Olson is a creative writer who concocts a hilarious combination of words to tell Daisy's story, and the comical illustrations add a perfect touch to the impending catastrophe. I can't wait to read his next book!

In Lazy Daisy, a young girl considers her messy room a masterpiece with its mountains of toys and piles of clothes, and a closet to match! Daisy considers herself with some pride as being the laziest girl in the world with a marvelous mess to prove it! Then Daisy's grandmother gets lost in all the mess and soon the entire town is buried in junk. Will Daisy learn her lesson and clean up the town before it's lost forever? Will Gramma get her dentures back? Enthusiastically recommended for young picturebook readers, Lazy Daisy is an original and entertaining story by David Olson that is showcased by Jenny Campbell's light and lively drawings.

Leaders nurture dignity for those around, expertise are listening, propagation of values, and assurance of dignity

1. The leader can create a new organization with new procedures, but the formation of culture requires collective learning and repeated experiences of success or failure.

2. It is no accident when a "turn around manager" arrives, the top layers of management are usually replaced and massive reorganization occurs. These drastic measures destroy old culture and initiate a new culture building process by removing the people who carry and represent the old culture. The destruction of culture is extremely costly on human level. The new people have to start building process all over and it is not even clear whether this is possible.

3. An organization built on individual incentives cannot become a set of teams simply because the CEO announces that teamwork is now necessary and launches a team-building program. However, if the CEO understands culture dynamics, he or she will begin to reward individuals for helping others and for contributing to other projects, thereby acknowledging the deep individualism of the organization but broadening the concept of individual competence to increasingly include "working with others".

4. Leaders cannot arbitrarily change culture in the sense of eliminating dysfunctional elements. Leaders can evolve culture by building on its strength while letting its weaknesses atrophy over time. If an organization is successful over time and has evolved mental models based on these methods, they will not abandon the mental model. The leader jobs is too broaden the Mental models. Focus should include developing new standards of judgment and evaluation so that competitive behavior is viewed as more negative and cooperative behavior more positive.

5. Management development is typically very function in young organizations. For example, the organization may promote the people most likely to be entrepreneur or who are technically the most competent, rather than seek out people who have managerial talent. Founder builders often glorify the technical functions such as research and development, manufacturing, and sales and demean managerial functions such as finance, planning, marketing, and human resources. Potential successors may be blocked from taking over and gaining learning experiences. Successful leaders at this stage grow with the organization and change their own outlook or recognize their own limitations and permit other forms of leadership to emerge.

6. The leader builds culture in one of three ways: a) by hiring and keeping subordinates who think and feel the way they do; b) by indoctrinating and socialize subordinates to think and feel as they do; c) by establishing a role model that encourages subordinates to identify with them and thereby internalize their beliefs, values, and assumptions.

Additional Thoughts about building culture: 1. Culture is not arbitrarily changed. Culture is evolved by building on strengths, broadening mental models of successful methods and processes 2. Get back to understanding what the product is about and focusing on customer oriented strategies. 3. Increasing vision and comprehension communication between top management and employees 4. Pushing data to unexpected places, encouraging participation and intrepretation of the data, and getting feedback that will cause temporary formation of teams and engineering of new processes 5. Creating new procedures that transform the organization 6. Creating and environment of learning 7. Getting people to thinking and value the same things the leader does.

7. Healthy, open minded skeptics can become effective leaders and, eventually, champions at work. If they find new approaches to enhance results, they will commit time and energy to them.

8. Local line leaders focus is at a business unit level. They may not think much at learning within the larger organization.

9. Leaders can use free-market choice inside an organization to liberate the entrepreneurial spirit of their people. As organizations move toward indirect leadership, the key role of senior leaders is to increase their people choices in ways that still focus the organization on its mission. Organizations viewed as economies.

10. In the future, most employees will work in intraprises that provide services to the core businesses. The core business will be run by small groups of line managers who will buy much of the value they add from internal intraprises.

11. What is leadership? Leadership is the process of empowering subordinates to learn from their mistakes, make changes, adjust to new circumstances, and preserve. Leadership brings into play elements of planning, commitment to innovation and problem solving, and energy ensuring dynamics of the organization are fair. The group looks for leadership to unlock paralysis in the direction to move. Leadership establishs policies, identifies targets, set priorities, and allocate resources and money. Leadership job is to create a feeling of security for their employees and influence young talent to come and work for them. Leadership creates blue oceans by creating a utility proposition. Leadership is gained by competence not position. Leadership creates conditions of comfort for their employees. Leadership talks openly about a wide variety of issues, sponsors democratic forum where creative members are reward for initiative, ingenuity and bravery. Leadership leads by example. Leadership uses work exchanges to show how things are to be done, giving each job a sense of dignity and enhanced standing with the crew. Leadership values the individual. Leadership creates free market choice inside their organizations to liberate the entrepreneurial spirit of their people. Leadership gets difficult projects started and results in long-term impact.

Leaders inspire confidence, fight fear, initiate positive and productive actions, define goals, and paint brighter tomorrows. The character of society's leadership may substantially determine how that society fares in an environment of change. Leadership values must be based on standards that benefit society.

12. The ethnic, cultural, and gender characteristics of America's population and labor force is rapidly changing. The emigration of nonwhites from Asia and Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and West and East Africa, represent people in the America's melting pot rising relative to that of Americans of European descent and represent an estimated that one third of all new entrants to the labor force.

13. Leaders must be willing to accept five fundamental challenges in the work force: a. They must be willing to be more sensitive and understanding with respect to ethnic, cultural, and gender differences. B. They must have a vision for the workplace that will result in significant broadening of the corporate culture and environment. C. They must craft and implement new and different employment and communication processes to enhance and promote perceptions of fairness and equity. D. They must bring a commitment to the effective utilization of a diverse work force. E. They must establish a place where people want to work and be productive and to develop new markets and maintain existing ones.

14. Effective leaders do not earn their role by position or Herculean work efforts, instead, effective leaders nurture dignity in those around them; their area of expertise are listening, propagation of values, and assurance of dignity; they foster relationship as a source of their power.

15. When people are experiencing fear, dread, foreboding, and exhaustion, people have an emotional need for a leader. A leader combats fears, instills confidence, and moves the group forward.

16. Leaders lead because they create a passionate commitment in other people to pursue the leaders strategy and succeed.

17. Leaders are the keepers and shapers of the company culture and constantly communicate these held values.

Frances Hesselbein is currently editor-in-chief of Leader to Leader quarterly. Previously, she served as CEO of the Girls Scouts of the USA and then as chairman and founding president of the Leader to Leader Institute, formerly the Peter F. Drucker Foundation for Nonprofit Management. Her published works include this book as well as its predecessor, The Leader of the Future, co-edited with Marshall Goldsmith and Richard Beckhard, and Be*Know*Do (an adaptation of the U.S. Army's leadership manual) to which she and General Eric K. Shinseki (USA Ret.) co-wrote the Introduction as well as Hesselbein on Leadership for which Jim Collins provided the Foreword.

Twenty-seven individual essays comprise this volume. The material is organized within five Parts:

A Vision of Leadership (Chapter 1)

Editors' Comments: "[Our] book begins where it should, with Peter Drucker's vision of leadership...[His] thoughts on creating organizations that have a spirit of performance built upon the `theory of the business,' creating a positive social impact and demonstrating consistent effectiveness, challenge the reader to both embrace change and become a change leader."

Leading in a Diverse World (Chapters 2-5)

Excerpt: "Leaders of the future will be progressively more cosmopolitan, progressive, diverse, and values oriented. They increasingly will come from countries with enormous growth potential outside of North America and Europe, such as the BRIC nations (Brazil, Russia, India, and China), places where leaders must also address daunting obstacles such as poverty or environmental depredation, regardless of the sector or the focus of their enterprise." Rosabeth Moss Kanter, "How Cosmopolitan Leaders Inspire Confidence"

Leading in a Time of Crisis and Complexity (Chapters 6-11)

Excerpt: "Leadership becomes necessary to business and communities when people have tough challenges to tackle, when they have to change their ways in order to thrive or survive, when continuing to operate according to current structures, procedures, and processes no longer will suffice. We call these adaptive challenges. Beyond technical problems, for which authoritative and managerial expertise will suffice, adaptive challenges demand leadership that engages people in facing challenging realities and then changing those priorities, attitudes, and behaviors necessary to thrive in a changing world. Ronald A. Heifetz, "Anchoring Leadership in the Work of Adaptive Process"

Leading Organizations of the Future (Chapters 12-19)

Excerpt: "Leaders will need to go beyond looking at the work to be done and consider the human doing the work. They will need to understand the incredible pressures that have been brought about by globalization, technology, and competition. They will need to appreciate the hard work and sacrifice needed for professional success in a much tougher world. Leaders will need to realize that as work becomes even more important, and organizations become even more important, they will become even more important - in helping to shape the quality of life and the futures of the professionals they lead." Marshall Goldsmith, "Leading New Age Professionals"

The Quality and Charter of the Leader of the Future (Chapters 20-27)
Excerpt:

"Leaders who think like anthropologists would realize several things. First, they would realize that they are leaders by virtue of their basic fit into the cultural milieu in which they grew up and in which they are now operating. It is all well and good to note that leaders "create" and "change" cultures, as I have argued in the past [i.e. in Organizational Culture and Leadership, 2004], but first they must realize that to change culture you must thoroughly understand the culture that created you and legitimized you...In other words, leaders must be culturally self-c0njscious and be aware of the cultural layers in their own personalities. Second, leaders who think like anthropologists would be conscious of the cultural variations among countries and companies, and among occupational subgroups within their companies." Edgar H. Schein, Leadership Competencies: A Provocative New Look"

Note: Schein then explains in his essay that in addition to thinking like an anthropologist, effective leaders must also have the skills of a family therapist and cultivate and trust artistic instincts.

In the city where I live, we have a number of outdoor markets at which slices of fresh fruit are offered as samples of the produce available. In that same spirit, I frequently include brief excerpts such as these from a book to help those who read my review to get at least a "taste" of the material in question. All of the material in this volume is of a very high quality. The value of each article, however, will be determined by the needs and interests of each reader.

Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to check out Hesselbein's The Leader of the Future published earlier, co-edited with Marshall Goldsmith and Richard Beckhard and Be*Know*Do (an adaptation of the U.S. Army's leadership manual) to which she and General Eric K. Shinseki (USA Ret.) co-wrote the Introduction; also Hesselbein on Leadership for which Jim Collins provided the Foreword.

The Leader of the Future 2 is a labor of love and a gift to all those who enjoy the study of leadership. This is the first book published by the Leader to Leader Institute (formerly The Drucker Foundation) since the death of leadership patriarch Peter Drucker. All proceeds support the Peter F. Drucker Foundation for Nonprofit Management. This book follows the publication of the international bestseller, The Leader of the Future.

This meditative work is the collection of 27 essay chapters that contemplate the kind of leadership needed for the future of the world. Each chapter is written by a respected leadership consultant or educator who provides their unique and challenging perspective on the kind of leader our world needs now and will need in an uncertain future. This collection of "thinkers" has varied experience in all sectors of modern society. As it states in the foreword of the book, "This book delivers a "battle cry" that will mobilize the leaders of the future to build viable, relevant organizations that will sustain us in the times ahead... Planning in the past was rigid, inflexible, and hierarchical, but planning for the future will require leaders to be fluid and flexible, and move easily across their organizations. The Leader of the Future 2 is indeed part of a blueprint for planning in a dynamic new world."

The genesis of the book was the tragic events that occurred on 9/11. Since that event a lot has changed in the world, and will continue to change in our uncertain future. The Leader of the Future 2 divides its 27 chapter into 5 interesting parts. Each part focuses on a certain aspect of leading in the future like vision, diversity, complexity, change and character. This is a book for serious thinkers and at times is not easy to read. Some of the gifted contributors would be the first to admit that writing with clarity is not their greatest personal strength. But in all fairness, they are looking back on the past with eyes toward the future and this is always an ambiguous rehearsal. The Leader of the Future 2 is brain-candy for anyone who likes to step outside of everyday thinking and ponder the "what-if" of tomorrow!

In a 1964 obscenity court case, then U.S. Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart wrote that pornography was difficult to define, but noted, "I know it when I see it." The same might be said of leadership. Since 1990, the Leader to Leader Institute (formerly the Peter F. Drucker Foundation for Nonprofit Management) has dedicated itself to examining, defining and elevating the art of leadership through books, educational materials and its respected journal, Leader to Leader. This book is a sequel to the Institute's The Leader of the Future, an international bestseller published in 28 different languages. This follow-up volume features 27 essays on being a leader in today's complex, challenging world. We confidently recommend this leadership treatise, which presents the informed thoughts, insights and opinions of respected experts from academia, the media, business, the military, the nonprofit sector and numerous other venues. Thanks to such contributors as Stephen Covey, Howard Gardner, Rosabeth Moss Kanter, Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner, this collection of essays clearly addresses the challenges of modern leadership.

In a world in great need of leadership, this book provides an array of outstanding contributions from those who have shaped and inspired this field. This book provides a superb addition to the libraries of all those who care deeply about leadership -- and who among us does not (or should not)?

Excellent reference for supply chain improvement

James Martin's book, "Lean Six Sigma for Supply Chain Management: The ten step solution process", is an excellent resource. It is written for supply chain professionals to explain six sigma process methodologies and how they can be applied to improving real business processes.

Mr. Martin does an excellent job of pulling together a broad set of information to explain these quality improvement methodolgies and how these can be applied to supply chain processes. He has created a great reference. This is the type of book that you want to read while your working on a process improvement project. The concepts are directly applicable.

This is most definitely a book for Supply Chain and Operations Management practitioners. If the reader is looking for a high level review of the subject matter, I would not recommend this book. This book is a serious, dense study of the material with practical applications and techniques.

Of the various industry texts that I have read, this is probably the "slowest read" mostly because there is so much content and meaning in each section. At the same time, the book design is modular so that the practitioner may skip chapters and study just their focus area. Mr. Martin definitely displays his expertise with fluff-free, accurate, and useful information. A must read for people serious about transforming their supply chains.

For me this book provided exceptional details with which to get your supply chain failures and problems under control. The section covering "Root Cause Analysis" presents the reader with detailed descriptions and examples of analytical methods useful for evaluationg the data associated with the supply chain process. The book demonstrates the myriad of elements that can run the supply chain process into a company quagmmire. This reader felt quite familiar with a number of the typical sins that cause supply chains to malfunction at the most crucial times in a company's commitment to a timely delivery process.
