Four Trips to Antiquity: Adventures of an Artist in Maya Ruined Cities narrates an artist's search through Central America for the form which inheres in ancient Maya sculpture. Initially commisioned by the Limited Editions Club of New York to illustrate the Popol Vuh, an ancient Quiche Maya manuscript, renowned artist and illustrator Everett Gee Jackson traveled to Chichicastenango, in the Guatamalan highlands in 1952. He then went to Copan, Honduras, to draw the magnificent, partially restored ruins there. This experience turned into a quest for the spirit in which Jackson became increaseingly absorbed in the different, more meditative rhythms of an older civilization. Approaching the stone carvings with the eye of an artist, Jackson communicates what it means to "see" through to the inner structure of the highly accomplished ancient art which had come to fascinate him. The artist then returned to Copan in 1954, this time with San Diego State University anthropologist and Trustee of the Museum of Man, Dr. Spencer L. Rogers. With no comission to illustrate, Jackson now was able to focus exclusively on the object of his fascination, immmersing himself primarily in the enduring stone stelae in the Great North Court. Jackson's third trip took place in 1962. It brought him via Costa Rica to the ruins of Tikal in Guatemala, then once again to Copan. His final trip to Copan was in 1978, at which time he noticed considerable civic development and other changes which had come about over time. Told in humrous and incisive fashion, the tale of these four trips to antiquity challenges the reader to consider the subject of sculpture not as "art" but as a doorway to the heart.

Nonstop action with spiritual teachings throughout the book. There was so much action going on I couldn't put it down. I am a real science fiction nut and this gave me more than I expected. This is a must read if you are into spiritual truths in the science fiction age. If man lived the way it was described in the fourth state this would be a better world.

Some of the best recounting of the contentious relationship between Hemingway and Fitzgerald out there. Chapter 2 -- Fitzgerald's Blue Pencil -- is priceless.

The transition from a Classic to a Romantic aesthetic

Bate is an outstanding critic and wonderfully clear writer. In this work he traces the great transition from Classic to Romantic Aesthetic. He outlines in his first chapter the principles of a Classical Art which aimed at the universally human. It operated on the basis that through Reason there could be attained a true grasp of Nature and the world. The Classical view however powerful and appealing gradually gave way to the more idiosyncratic, individual, Nature connected Romantic view.
Bate brings to the work a rich knowledge of the Art, Literature and Music of the time. An outstanding critical work.

Analysis, the folk and serious metaphysics!

Review Date: 2002-01-10
With this work, Frank Jackson has provided us with a much needed explicitation of the assumptions underlying most forms of philosophical analysis. Indeed, Jackson argues forcefully that conceptual analysis is much more prevalent in philosophical works than is admitted by many of Jacksons colleages. One of the most important insights offered in this work is the idea that metaphysics, if done seriously, must depend strongly on folk intuitions. The intuitions about when 'the folk' would plausibly apply a certain concept reveils the 'folk theory'. The metaphysician's job is then to locate these intuitions in a coherent account of 'what there is' in the traditional sense. Consequently, Jackson offers two examples of such analysis, namely colours and ethics. Both are located in the natural world: colours as the surface properties which cause our colour experiences and ethical properties as concealed descriptive properties. Whether you agree with these conclusions or not, the line of thought is both clear and sharp. Throughout, Jackson remains true to his general points, which are that metaphysics has to do with analysis of folk concepts as much as empirical discovery. This inevitably leads to considerations on Kripke and Putnam and the nature of so-called 'a posteriori necessities'. Jackson argues that the fallacious intuition that such exist stems from the fact that a single sentence may express different propositions, depending on its intension. Thus 'water is H2O' may express the necessary (and a priori) truth that 'what is actually water is H20' or it may express the contingent (and a posteriori) proposition that 'the watery stuff of our acquaintance is H20'. This is a profound insight, which solves many sceptical worries instigated by the Quinean movement. The distinctions a priori/a posteriori and contingent/necessary may now be employed with a clear conscience; something which has been difficult ever since Quine's Two Dogmas first appeared half a century ago. Not all will agree with Jackson's line of argument but the clarity of his claims and significance of their implications make this book a great asset for anyone interested in metaphysics and the philosophy of language.

"The age of manuscript was vastly different from the age of print, and the gulf between the two is seldom fully realized. The difference was that between the medieval and the modern world. In this concise and brilliant survey, Dr. Chaytor gives a detailed account of the medieval age of manuscript before the advent of print: the world of readers and writers, attitudes to literature, scarcity and costliness of books, methods of copying, means of publication and circulation." quoted from back of book

This is a well researched book about one of the early 20th century's most famous and richest women performers, who is now almost forgotten. It is beautifully illustrated and chronicles the sadly short life of this glamorous woman, who captured the hearts of French, British and American theatre-goers. Her spectacular and erotic stage costumes and supposedly scandalous lifestyle kept the public enthralled. This book helps keep her memory alive and is an entertaining read.
