I just received this set along with the other Little Golden Book cd sets. It's wonderful, very well done, very enjoyable for all it's listeners including the parents. The voice is friendly, lively, very clear, and the sound effects of the assorted animals adds to the telling. It does let the child know when to turn the page with a small bell sound. You could just as easily listen without the book, and the sound wouldn't be much of a distraction. It really isn't expense and it's well worth it.I will definitely be waiting for more of these sets to come out.

The original cassette tape included the wonderful song "Carrot Stew" which was what really made the story so fabulous. Unfortunately, the CD does not have the song on it. What a shame. The song is so cute that we still sing it after 26 years! Someone needs to put it back in!! The fact that the song is not included should have been put in the product description. The book itself is great, but with the song, it's wonderful.

A story for all the ages... Here there bee dragons...

I have had my copy of this book for over 10 years now. My mother read it to my younger siblings and me when I was a tweenage girl. I pick it up and read it every few years and have also read it to my son. He thought it was great, too.

It's a great, old-fashioned fairytale set in today's world. Be warned - It is not an everyone gets along in the end story. The ending ends as it should with everyone getting exactly what they deserve. It makes you wish that there was a little book dragon looking over your shoulder.

I would recommend this book to adults and children alike. It has a moral message that a child as young as 4 or 5 would get but has enough levels to keep everyone entertained.

At 50 I'm still the fantasy freak in the house and found this book as enchanting and enjoyable as any I've read. My wife the murder mystery consumer was totally enthralled by the tale when searching for a diversion from her regular reading. We've both read the tale more than once and have made present to one of our nephews of a hard back version of the book, that's how much we liked it. When you finish reading this book you set it down with a feeling of satisfaction, that everything wrapped up quite nicely, and wonder if there will be another to follow.

Books and Dragons--my favorite things

I found this book as an adult, but I was totally enchanted, and it became the start of my collection of dragons. This rates with Anne McCaffrey's dragons--friendly dragons. This tale is so enjoyable, yet not predictable. Moral, but not preachy. And kids will love the good guy/bad guy tension.
This is a book every child (and most adults) should have the pleasure of having in their life.

"A Book Dragon" was the very first book I read geared towards fantasy and the mythical creatures we call dragons. I first read this book in grade 6 when everyone else was reading about babysitters or high school twins and it introduced me to a whole other world of mystery, magic and myths. In my mind this lovely tale about the last dragon of his kind who travlelled far and wide to discover the preciousness of the written word is a wonderful book for children and adults alike. It helps us realize that stories such as this and any other form of learning and expanding the mind are the teasure we should be stiving to protect. I adored this book as soon as I read it. I could not put it down. I have looked far and wide for a copy as it would be something I pass on to any future readers in my family.

My personal favorite!

A Book Dragon is a fabulously written story about a time in which dragons were as common as wolves are today--"Here there bee dragons." I first had this book read to me when I was in fourth grade and I absolutely loved it! I have been trying to find a copy of it for years. It is a story about a dragon named Nonesuch who becomes able to control his size. He finds treasure to guard in books. This is a wonderful story for all ages, and best if read aloud.

If you are looking for a comprehensive, detailed, easy to understand reference guide to the history, approaches and routes of the peaks of the Grand Tetons...look no further. Complete with Topos, black and white Arial photographs, and hand drawn route diagrams, this guide is a "must have" in any mountaineer's quiver of guide books. The book opens with a history of the Grand Teton Range and introduces readers to the men and women who explored and developed many of the modern routes enjoyed by all today; particularly the "bold" first accents of the early Teton pioneers Paul Petzoldt and Glenn Exum. The meat of the book can be found in the remaining pages covering everything from, recommended equipment, mountain safety, to detailed accounts of the climbs and approaches on all the jagged peaks of the Teton Range.
As a climber of 20+ years, I found this book to be extremely helpful on my trips to the Tetons and highly recommend this guide to anyone entertaining the possibility of climbing or hiking in the Teton Range. Whether you are a seasoned climber, or are considering cutting your teeth in one of the most spectacular mountain ranges the United States has to offer, consider this resource a must!

Exceptional Climbing Guide to the Magnificent Teton Range

A good climbing guide is a personal friend. You spend hours reading about possible climbs, adventures awaiting for you. There is much pleasure in browsing a climbing guide, remembering the climbs you have made, those climbs not completed due to severe weather or other reasons, and all those climbs you have yet to try.

My Teton guidebook has particular value as I always inscribe notes about my climbs: the date, my companions, the weather, route finding tips (or conversely, where I went astray), elapsed time, and other items of interest.

This third edition, 1996, is more than four hundred pages. It is much to bulky and heavy to carry on a climb. But it is a remarkable reference of virtually every climbing route in the Teton Range. The descriptions are detailed and well-written. I have not encountered any climbing guide that is comparable in detail and scope to this work by Leigh Ortenburger and Reynold Jackson.

The number of routes and variations on the favorite peaks can be overwhelming. The most commonly used route is highlighted. Route descriptions range from easy scrambles to difficult climbs requiring substantial technical skill on ice, snow, and rock. Numerous excellent black and white photos with climbing routes overlain are scattered throughout the texts. Also, there are many detailed ink drawings of more difficult climbs.

For climbers new to the Tetons, the authors have listed more than 130 of their favorite routes ranging from easy scrambles to severe climbs 5.12 in difficulty, as well as difficult technical ice climbing routes.

The introduction, some sixty pages, is quite good. Major topics include a history of Teton climbing, descriptions of great climbs and traverses, details on the national park service policy, and a discussion of the difficulty rating system. The section on Teton weather and climatology is both helpful and sobering. Also, on more than one occasion I had reason to appreciate Ortenburger's and Jackson's bushwacking hints for those canyons without maintained trails.

I have used A Climber's Guide to the Teton Range for many years beginning with the first edition dating back to the 1960s by Leigh Ortenburger. In the intervening years a condensed version, an extended version (volume 2), and a second and third edition have been published.

This third edition is really quite exceptional and I highly recommend this guidebook to anyone planning to climb in Grand Teton National Park.

Sadly, Elli's book goes where Anne Frank's diary did not
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2004-12-19
Elli's story parallels Anne Frank's in some ways. In the spring of 1944, Elli and her Hungarian family still knew freedom. Elli was thirteen, with the typical crushes on boys we all remember from that age. Then the S.S. came and Elli, with her blonde braids, escaped the gas chamber only to become slave labor for the Third Reich.

How Elli ever summoned the courage to write this book is a miracle in itself. Elli witnessed and lived atrocities and cruelties beyond what I've read in any other book on the Holocaust. That she somehow gathered herself together enough (at a much later age) to dredge up and share these memories with the world is a sheer act of bravery and love.

This book is definitely not light bed-time reading. Don't read it if you don't like "depressing" books. Apart from other emotions, such as heartbreak and anger, by the time you finish the book you may also feel some of the emptiness and numbness that the survivors of Auschwitz and Dachau must have felt.

An amazing and emotional true story

I could definitely identify with some of the essays, but others bored me and I didn't finish them. The variety of emotions, situations, and life experiences were entertaining and did lead to some introspection. I wouldn't say this is a "must read," but it's an enjoyable book that was perfect to read in bits, as the 42 essays are short.

Reading Fudge

Review Date: 2003-05-23
I love to read in the same way that some people love eating chocolates. Just as they disregard warnings as to caloric intake in making their selections and opt for the largest, darkest,or prettiest piece in the box, so, too, I disregard the admonition not to judge a book by its cover and often select a book by its size, heft, and cover. Guilty Pleasures meets all of my superficial criteria: it has a pleasing fit to the hand, a weight perfect for horizontally-inclined literati such as I, and an eye-catching cover filled with colorful shoes such that one's eye is drawn to the authorship on the suspicion (unfounded) that this is Immelda Marcos' work. Of course, as my chocoholic friends might say, "the proof is in the pudding" and the quality of a book is in the reading. Just as a square of fudge delights as it melts and clings to the palate, Guilty Pleasures delights the mind. Eight women writers unrepentantly share the joys they find in ordinary and not so ordinary pleasures running a quixotic gamut from taking antidepressants to applying toenail polish, from crossword fanaticism to extorting money from one's parents. The writing is refreshingly witty, wicked, and wise. Although these small gems of essays are assembled of necessity in an order, I recommend reading them haphazardly. After all, what chocolate lover would adhere to the map on the candy box, eating all the creams first before proceeding to the nuts? There are enough strictures in life! Just open the book and enjoy at random. And, yes, the next time you need to tote a small gift somewhere, you might forego the candy and bring along a copy of Guilty Pleasures. Think of it as a book lover's fudge!

These authors have tapped into a huge vein (keg?) of human experience. Each essay details a different furtive joy, and I could feel their pleasure even in the ones I couldn't identify with myself.
There are no morals given; no helpfull hints; just honest enjoyment of many things that may not fit our public personas or enhance our professional images. Before I even finished the book, I found myself mentally starting to examine my own guilty pleasures. It's so nice to know that I'm not alone in admitting that I do get a thrill out of a few somewhat dubious activities.
My daughter keeps dipping into this book, too. Obviously, it's appeal is multi-generational.

Best book if you want to self-educate yourself advanced math and physics. Starts where high school left off. Seamless integration of math and physics topics. Lucid, I repeat LUCID, explanation of concepts that other writers seem to dress up in incomprehensible thickets of verbiage in the guise of 'rigor'. In contrast, this particular book's authors come from the traditions of Feynman...the 'great man for clear explanations' Congratulations on a job well done!!!

Not a bad idea at all!

Review Date: 2005-08-16
I very much like the idea to integrate Physics and Calculus, because these two are really related to each other. Calculus was `discovered' by Newton, as a tool to make the foundations of modern physics. So you see they are really connected.
The book does not need a lot of background (only a little about limits and derivatives) and is excellent for people out Belgium who have finished there ASO.
The text is easy readable, but you will not find any "cool" photo's or coloured drawings, but I don't mind that at all!
I think the text is really aimed at people with in interest in Physics. For them this book is just great. But for people who are rather interested in mathematics, I think they will sometimes get frustrated with the book because sometimes (important) proves are let out to improve readability and focus on the more physical side of the subject they are dealing with.

Finally a book with a balance between conceptual understanding and mathematical modeling

It can't be said how many times I've read reviews with ecstatic ratings for some particular physics book. Usually I find the books reviewed are overly formal in their arguments and depend primarily on mathematical arguments. You might see the punchline coming. Unfortunately there is not a balancing of the approach by books emphasizing mostly a conceptual approach. They don't seem to exist if you exclude the popular press. As a rule books "for teaching" cannot be accepted as serious enough if they provide a mostly conceptual approach.(Actually, I don't think erring on the opposite side, i.e. underemphising math, is good either but you'd think we could err on one side as much as the other.)

This text is a pleasure to read. For those of us who prefer a coneptual understanding along with the mathematical modeling this book can't be beat. It hits a near perfect balance between the two approaches. Its the underdog that just keeps giving.

This book is 1 of 2 which make a set. These two books are good as they are presented in black and white with a systematic layout. This is a great step away from normal university textbooks which are rehashed constantly, due to the commercialism which permeates our society, making them convoluted at times and full of irrelevant text and colorful images etc. Most of these textbooks shouldn't be allowed in our classrooms. This book didn't get five stars as some concepts and examples don't have relevant graphs and models presented which would make learning easier (especially the formulation of the surface integral). All in all this is the best calculus/physics book I've found so far. It is important to download the errata as some mistakes are present within: ...

Required reading for math and physics majors.

Review Date: 2003-12-23
It was always my philosophy that a student should complete the
first two semesters of calculus before beginning physics at the
calculus level. I felt it was too much to ask that a student have
to tackle beginning calculus and physics at the same time. There is nothing as helpful to learning physical science as a good foundation in mathematics. I took this as irrefutable and never
thought I would change my mind. Today I received both volumes of
this set. I have been looking at these books for about twelve hours and I can't believe how well the authors have seamlessly woven together calculus theory with physics theory at the first year level. If you are a student taking physics and calculus you must have these books. There isn't enough space here to do
justice to these books. If you are a real math or physics major
it will only take you 15 minutes to realize what you are looking
at. If you had AP Calculus and AP Physics you will be in for a
treat. These books are a great academic and teaching achievement and should be required reading for all calculus and physics teachers as well.

It's severly dated by today's standards, but what an excellent read, all the same. I look at it as the music industry version of Julia Phillips "You'll Never Eat Lunch In This Town Again". Biting with sardonic wit, lots of muck-raking (most of it spot-on), and just a wee bit 'o' honesty.

How much of it is true, we'll never know. But the essential bits (the inception of the Boomtown Rats, their immersion into the music scene, other bands, Live Aid, etc.) are required reading for anybody who gives a damn about the music industry. There's loads of comedy as well as pathos, as well as some of the greatest quotes I've ever read in an autobiography.

If you can still find a copy, it's well worth owning.

Bob Geldof's book is a stunning odyssey into the mind of a rock star. he also happens to be a philanthropist who can teach a thing or two to the best of them. the man behind `live aid' not only collected hundreds of millions out of a telethon for africa's famine victims, but made sure they reached the right hands. his forthright language and no-holds-barred style are refreshing. if you must read an autobiography of a rock star, read this one.

I purchased this book for my sister for her birthday because is is a Die-Hard MJ fan and she just loves everything about this book!!, The pictures, The Interviews she says that it even has MJ opinion about how he felt about the his earlier hits. So I say this is a very excellent book to purchase for yourself if you too are a die-hard fan of MJ'S or even if you know someonre who is they won't be disappointed.

P.S. It even has his lyrics to certain songs. So how can you go wrong? this book was worth every cent I sent to it knowing how happy it made my sister.

a great book to have for refernce

this book is basicaly a bunch of facts on the star with itntrevew tranacriptions and some nice pictures thown in although the way the book is set up is a little odd and the typing errors in the first few chapters lead me to belive that it was rushed to prir This book iss not a bio it was a book put togther by a big fan that becaily said michael jackson is cool and heres why after quickly going over his personal life (and not in much detail) it basicaly breaks down what hes done with somerarelly seen at least in some areas of the word intervieews printed

This is a beautiful book from the front cover to the back. It's a down-to-earth, no-non sense read on the entertainer. It's a keepsake for the bookself.

This 300 page book is not just another book on Michael Jackson! This book is unique and a mile from the rest! It's packed with detailed information on the life and career of the entertainer. It's a well-written book that can be housed in any public library or on any high school bookshelf. Yet, I have noticed that this clean book on Michael Jackson doesn't appear to be selling as well as all the other books that are on the market about him. What a pity! This book is more of a literary work on the Superstar life and career than any of the others that I have read. But it's missing one main ingredient - Trash! It doesn't really get into throwing stones and pulling what-ifs opinions out of the wind.
But that's the world we're living in. Give the people what they want, and what they want is dirty laundry over good writing! Decent works like this one get left behind!
