Exploring the mysteries of G-D's word
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-06
In this volume Jeffrey Satinover attempts to explore the truth behind the Bible Codes, proving it's validity through mathematics and science , including quantum physics.

There are also some interesting perspectives on the metaphysical element behind the holocaust and the Gulf Wars.
The book outlines the remarkable story of Rabbi Michael Ber Weissmandl and his work to save Jews from the infernos of the Shoah , in any way possible.
The author illustrates how the secrets of the universe are hidden in the Torah and in the chapter entitled 'The Flames of Amalek' he quotes Rabbi Tzadok HaCohen (1823-1900): "In physical space , Amalek is sworn to prevent Israel from dwelling in the Land",
The real reason behind the vast conspiracy to destroy the People of Israel in the Land of Israel , going on today.
That is what anti-Zionism is, the evil of Amalek , the ungodly determination to prevent Jews from living in the Land of Israel.
Amalek is the Jew-hating spirit that tries to destroy the people of Israel In the words of the Passover Haggada: "In every generation there are some who rise against us to annihilate us."

In the Bible's Book of Esther, the evil Haman, who tried to exterminate the Jewish people, was Amalek. Before that, at the time of Israel's exodus from Egypt, it was Amalek (Exodus 17:8) that attacked Israel - the people that God had blessed. In fact, it was that very blessing - God's blessing - that provoked Amalek to swoop down on the people from behind, to attack and kill the weakest.

Amalek fiercely envies Israel; Amalek is furiously jealous. Amalek tries to kill and maim as many Jews and their friends and allies as possible, starting with the weakest: the mothers with children, the elderly, the sick and the babies. Amalek prefers to kill children and women. Hard to believe as it may be, Amalek dances in the streets at the prospect of human (particularly, Jewish) suffering - even if the joyful dancers are doomed to die in the inferno themselves!

The book outlines the miracles of the First Gulf War , when Saddam Hussein-who modelled himself on Nebuchadnezzar , and whose primary aim was the destruction of Israel-sent missiles of mass destruction into Israel , there was not one Israeli fatality. These Scuds where not minor missiles as the media outside Israel tried to portray them , but very destructive.

The single scud that strucka US millitary facility in Saudi Arabia killed nineteen soldiers. 33 scuds where sent into Israel damaging 3, 773 buildings.
This phenomenon has no scientific explanation and can only be explained as the work of G-D in protecting the People of Israel.

Quoting the then President of Israel Chaim Herzog adressing the nation on February 22, 1991 : " The Jewish nation witnessed many miracles in it's history , from the splitting of the Red Sea to this very day . This time , as well , we where blessed with divine intervention."
The hand of G-D clearly guided the scuds to avoid any Israeli fatalities. These events are hiddn in the Bible Codes.
Am Israel Chai.
This chapter also focuses on the Nuremberg trials , where the ten Nazi leaders hung for crimes against humanity , mirrored the ten sons of Haman hung for their plot to anihilate the Jews in Ancient Persia , commemorated by the Jewish feast of Purim.

Satinover reports several mathematicians and scienists who where confirmed atheists , who became devoutly religious after studying the Bible codes.

Astonishing revelations

This fascinating work is the very best study of the Bible Code that I've encountered. Satinover examines whether the code really exists, its accuracy, meaning and implications. The subject of scientific research since the late 1980s, the code was first mentioned many centuries ago in the writings of Jewish mystics, especially during the great flowering of Spanish Kabbalah.

Chapter One deals with the work of amongst others the Vilna Gaon Elijah ben Solomon, Maimonides and Rabbi Moses ben Nachman and explains how the codes are encrypted in the Hebrew letters of the text. Chapter Two recounts the discovery of the codes in the 1980s and provides portraits of some of the personalities involved, mainly religious members of the scientific community in Jerusalem. Illustrated with Hebrew text, it discusses the science of encryption and delves deeper into the structure of the codes and matters of statistical probability.

Chapter Three considers the Jewish devotion to Torah, scribal traditions and the Jewish Torah compared to the Samaritan version. The chapters titled The Black Fires of Holocaust and The White Fire of Destiny tell the tragic story of Rabbi Weissmandl of Slovakia. The vital role of cryptology in the Allied victory in the Second World War is explored next. The science of cryptology grew out of Kabbalah. A prime example of ancient cryptological sophistication is found in the work of Nechunya ben HaKanah, a student of the great Simeon ben Yochai, originator of the Zohar.

During the Renaissance, kabbalistic ideas became known in Europe. In the 15th century, cryptology suddenly underwent major advances that laid the groundwork for the computer and the science of statistics. A famous Renaissance cryptologist, Trithemius of Spannheim, developed a method based directly upon a prayer of the aforementioned Nechunya ben HaKanah. There were others, like Alberti and Cardano, from whose works were derived all the sophisticated encoding machines used by the Allies.

There are thought-provoking sections on Pascal, Von Neumann and Turing, whilst chapters eight and nine recount the (re)discovery of the code by Israeli scientists, with discussions of the phenomenon of clustering, the scientific scrutiny applied and specific messages like the Hanukkah and Purim codes. Chapter 10 provides further information on specific searches and their results.

Chapter 11, The Flames of Amalek, covers the 1991 Gulf War and discoveries on messages about the Holocaust as well as the concept of the biblical Nimrod, the man of violence of whom Hitler was a type. Satinover also briefly discusses the book of Esther here. Chapter 12, The Great Sages, first looks at the interest generated by the code, then at further experiments that resulted in the publication of an article in the journal Statistical Science.

Some common misunderstandings of the codes are dealt with in chapter 13, whilst the next one contains interesting information on William James, author of The Varieties of Religious Experience: A Study in Human Nature, his views on freedom of choice within deterministic influences, and his influence on Satinover. Quantum Mechanics, the complexity of the codes, theology and personal conduct are also discussed here.

Technical Appendix A examines the extraordinarily exact Jewish calculation of 29.53059 days to the lunar month plus the age of the universe as calculated by Nechunya ben HaKanah from a code in the book of Genesis and explained by Yitzhak DeMin Acco. They arrived at an age of 15.3 billion years. Nechunya lived in the first century AD and DeMin Acco in the 13th century! The work of Hugh Ross and Fazale Rana, such as A Matter of Days is relevant here. Technical Appendix B considers transformations of space and time with reference to prime numbers and their visual and spatial configurations, whilst Appendix C revisits the "Great Sages" experiment in finer detail.

The 21 pages of notes are as informative as the main text of the book. Note number 11 to chapter four was especially interesting to me as a Christian. It explains some seemingly Antisemitic passages by John in the book of Revelation and elsewhere. The first is the attack upon "Jews who are not Jews" and the second is the expression "synagogues of Satan." Satinover argues that these words apply to the Babylonian magic-based distortion of Judaism by the Samaritans. Archaeological digs have unearthed many of these "synagogues" that contain a blend of Judaic and astrological imagery. Thus John was not criticizing the synagogues of the Jewish people; this makes sense to me and cleared up some of my confusion on this subject.

The fact that I was reading Richard Elliott Friedman's The Hidden Book in the Bible at the same time made Satinover's book even more intriguing. This hidden book was originally one narrative but was cut up by the Bible editors so that other stories, poetry and laws were spliced into and around it. The divided segments of this story are now spread through nine of the Bible books from Genesis to the first two chapters of Kings. In light of this, I am convinced that the mysterious editor/s of the Torah were divinely inspired; that the finalization of the Old Testament (Tanach), whenever it took place after the return from Babylon, was an act of momentous significance.

Black & white figures and illustrations throughout the book help to explain the nature of the codes. The bibliography contains books and articles plus contact addresses of the Aish HaTorah organization which offers a reliable source of information on the Torah codes. The book concludes with an index. The Truth Behind The Bible Code is one of the most thought-provoking books I have ever read, and a valuable reference source. Christian readers might also be interested in Yeshua: The Name of Jesus Revealed in the Old Testament by Yaacov Rambsel and Kabbalah of Yeshua by Zusha Kalet.

As well as giving interesting information, this book provides a range of really useful exercises to help you make important decisions about your life direction. By helping you create a vision for your future, analyse your strengths and set goals, the activities laid out in the book support reflection and action in important areas of your life. They enable you to analyse what you want and where you are going as you enter your 30s - but would be equally applicable to moments of transition at other ages.

The authors manage to make the subject matter meaningful and entertaining - adding humourous elements that make the book easy to read and follow. The result is a positive and lighthearted guide to some pretty serious issues. The reader is challenged, but supported and encouraged.

Definitely a good read for anyone wanting to take a long hard positive look at their life, what they want out of life and where they are going.

This book is perfect for sharing with your twins when they are children to help them understand their special gift, or if you have other children who will soon have twin brothers or sisters. I think it would also be enjoyable and informative if you are a grandparent, teacher or other who interacts with twins. It gives a delightful, easy-to-read overview of twins and answers all the questions one might have if they know little about these special people. I thought the layout of the book, the photographs and information was perfect for this target audience. I highly recommend this book. I have passed it around to my entire family and everyone loved it. Buy this book!

Review from the Archives of Ophthalmology:

Arch Ophthalmol. 2007;125:437-438.

Early in its development, ophthalmic ultrasound split into two major camps: one led by Dr Coleman and the other by Karl Ossoinig, MD. Both men had distinct opinions regarding the optimal techniques for examination, and their spirited interchanges added spice to ophthalmology meetings and journals. When Dr Coleman published the first edition of Ultrasonography of the Eye and Orbit in 1977, it became the major reference for the field. Almost 30 years later, this second edition highlights the advances and current status of this field as seen through the eyes of one of its pioneers. The authors have extensive experience in the design and use of ophthalmic ultrasound instrumentation. They clearly explain the fundamental physics of ultrasound in layperson's as well as in more precise mathematical terms. They highlight the advantages and limitations of different scanning modalities, such as sector, linear, and arc scans, and discuss the factors that determine the quality of B-scan images. Dr Coleman, despite his passion for his own methods, also provides an objective analysis of his and Dr Ossoinig's methods.

The chapters on ocular and orbital diagnosis detail the conditions in which ultrasound has diagnostic utility. The figures are of high quality, and the accompanying legends and text are clear and concise. While Ultrasound of the Eye and Orbit, 2nd Edition, written by Sandra Frazier Byrne, RDMS, and Ronald L. Green, MD, contains examples of more disease conditions, Dr Coleman's text includes more images taken with new or novel imaging systems. Recently, the availability of higher frequencies and digital signal processing has improved ultrasound resolution substantially. The authors have played a significant role in these advances, and the sheer beauty of some of these images is in itself reason enough to own this book.

Advances in computer processing have opened new avenues for ultrasound diagnostic techniques. This book describes 3-dimensional ultrasound imaging and discusses its utility for monitoring choroidal melanoma following eye-sparing therapies. The authors describe their decades of work using computer-assisted analysis of raw radio-frequency data to assess the malignant potential of choroidal melanoma. A uniquely detailed chapter about arc scanning with high-frequency evaluation of the anterior segment provides a good basis to understand the benefits of the Artemis 2 (Ultralink LLC, St Petersburg, Fla), a 50-MHz, 3-dimensional arc B-scan unit, for use in refractive surgery.

One significant drawback to previous books on ophthalmic ultrasound has been their inability to demonstrate the kinetic findings of an ophthalmic examination within the printed medium. This book is accompanied by a DVD that demonstrates the basic kinetic findings of conditions, such as retinal detachments and vitreous hemorrhage, using narrated video clips. The authors include videos of typical patient examinations from start to finish using their techniques and instrumentation. The video of an examination using the Artemis 2 is especially well done. I would like to see even more narrated video clips to demonstrate how the findings of a dynamic ultrasound examination can help in diagnosis. The DVD format would also be ideal for showcasing 3-dimensional ultrasound image acquisition and interpretation.

This compact book manages to squeeze twice the information into half the number of pages as the first edition. I would recommend this text for ophthalmologists and technicians who have an interest in understanding ophthalmic ultrasound, or to anyone who desires proficiency in ultrasound examination techniques.

They finally came out with a 2nd edition!! These pioneers in the field have again written the most authoritative and complete description of the physics, practice and latest technology in the field of ophthalmic ultrasound.

These recognized leaders in Ophthalmic Ultrasound have updated their original masterwork in an elegant volume that covers the entire spectrum of ophthalmic ultrasound including the history, physics, application and pathology of ocular diagnosis. It is exceptionally well written and exceedingly readable for technician to experienced ophthalmologist!

The material is presented with amazing color images and loaded with the highest resolution of the anterior segment and retina. It includes conventional 10 MHz to the newest cutting edge, very high frequency Artemis Arc scans of the anterior segment. Biometry as well as diagnostic techniques are described by acknowledged leaders in the field.

Included is a DVD with an introduction by the legendary Walter Cronkite and a dozen or so of some of the very best vitreoretinal specialists in the world describing ocular pathologies- including vitreous hemorrhage, ocular tumors, and retinal detachments.

An enlightening, extremely well written read and an amazing resource...my highest recommendation!! Thank you Drs. Coleman, Silverman, Lizzi et al.!!

"I love this book!" says my 4 year old

Both my son and I really enjoy this rhyming Christmas/numbers book in which Octavia, a young reindeer, describes her seven uncles (from Uncle Uno to Uncle Sven). My personal favorite is Uncle Duce, an Elvis impersonator, while my son seems to prefer Uncle Quint, a basketball star.

The rhythm and rhyme are perfect. Extra credit to the author for using the word "tines" in a book for youngsters ("Uncle Trey is short and wide. Antler tines? Three on each side!")...the vocabulary is just sophisticated enough to be slightly challenging to young readers.

Brian Floca (for Click magazine readers, he's the illustrator of "Beatrice Black Bear") draws with a loose, Quentin Blake style. OK, maybe that doesn't help much. Let's just say his reindeer have personality...these are not cookie cutter reindeer. Floca's illustrations live up to the creativity of Lisa Wheeler's words; it takes a special artist to draw an Elvis reindeer, complete with wig and white jumpsuit.

I'm kind of sorry I didn't discover this book until after the holiday season, but really, I think it's funny enough to keep us laughing all year `round.

Antlers Away!

Review Date: 2006-01-15
This very funny book teaches numbers, but it also entertains and surprises in a very big way. Author Lisa Wheeler and illustrator Brian Flocci are simultaneously smart and zany; they don't dumb down the humor for kids, and their septet of oddball reindeers seem like they've come from an animal-populated screwball comedy. Wheeler tosses out such wildly inventive actions and personalities that they almost hide the underlying rhythmic structure and focus on counting. Each two-page spread introduces one of young Octavia's seven uncles, with the previously counted uncles integrated within each playful illustration. As a music aficionado, I especially enjoyed Uncle Duce, the punfully introduced second uncle:

Uncle Duce from Cameroon,
Bellows out an Elvis tune.
When he sings, the girls all swoon...
And he's my loudest uncle.

He has two wigs. He has two boots.
He has two shiny white jumpsuits.
He has two roadies-Gnat and Flea.
He says his favorite niece is ME!

Other idiosyncratic uncles include a scuba diver ("my sweetest uncle"), a trick-shot basketballer ("my coolest uncle"), a stunt-deer ("my bravest uncle") and a writer ("my smartest uncle"). Uncle number four has four lassos, four spurs, and four-gallon hats, and he is shown doing a four-rope trick involving Octavia and Uncles one through three. For those who like some good values thrown in with their fun, there's a subtle allusion to the unique appeal of these disparate uncles: "They're all here now/It's quite a mix/Each uncle's cool/Each uncle's great/ And I'm Octavia-number eight." Hmmm....eight reindeer...and they gather just "once a year" --where have we heard that before? Well, I'm not going to give that way/but let's just say/they pull a sleigh! (ho ho ho, indeed!).

Flocca's ink and watercolor illustrations have the fun, casual style of Sandra Boynton. With colors spilling over his sketchy lines, Flocca's painting feels spontaneous-he's so talented that each pair of antlers seem to have its own personality. Both the author and illustrator delight in the unexpected: In one picture, a white background covering more than half of the scene is actually the bottom of a glacier. With its big surprise finish and hilarious presentation of seven very different uncles, "Uncles and Antlers" is almost certain to please (and teach something about numbers as well!).

Every woman knows the phenomenon--you scream at your kids, you fight with your husband, you eat potato chips by the bag, everything your boss says makes you see red--what is going on????

You go for professional help and the nice shrink says "Here, take these pills for depression or these tranquillizers." And, sure enough, two weeks later you feel great and believe the shrink is a miracle worker. But guess what--it's just your menstural cycle. You're going to be screaming at your kids and fighting with your husband all over again in a few days if you don't read this book and find out what you really need to do is to get on top of your hormones. The way it's explained here, it's not that hard. You need to watch your diet, especially caffeine, alcohol and sugars (the things we automatically turn to!); you need to see a doctor for natural (not synthetic)hormone replacements in some cases; but most of all you need to understand that while you are trying to get on with your life, your body has its own agenda. This book is packed with useful information and is upbeat and easy to read. In short, it's a lifesaver, whether you are a teenager just starting your menstrual cycle or a middle-aged lady still going through the motions.

Good General History Of The Ramakrishna Movement In The USA
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-04-23
One hundred years after the Vivekananda'a talks in Chicago at the World's Parliament of Religions in 1893, this book appears to trace and evaluate the spread of the Ramakrishna / Vedanta Movement in the USA. While he does no more than touch briefly on what the movement is doing presently in India, Jackson illustrates the peculiar forces at work in India and the US at the turn of the century that were so propitious to the movement's beginning. He shows the reasons for its early growth while so many other eastern religious imports languished and died, and sketches out the many causes of its later successes and failures. He does not go deeply into the theology or spirituality of Vedanta, but gives a brief summary of the lives of Ramakrishna and Vivekananda and their general teachings, and he contrasts the movement with the more modern USA phenomena of Krishna Consciousness and Transcendental Meditation. He suggests some of the strengths and weaknesses that will affect its future success. Most of the history of the movement has been written from within; it is good to have an outsider and a professional historian give his interpretation and present the various sides of the conflicts that have arisen. I think he presents an informative, objective, and balanced picture.

Written by a professor of history at the University of Texas, this medium sized book tells the story of the Ramakrishna-Vivekananda movement from it's asian and American preconditions, through it's origination, through it's first twenty difficult and upheaveled years up to the present time (ca. 1993). It also deals with questions like, how the organisation compares to other hindu groups in America, what the typical member looks like (, although this is based on too spare materials,), then what of the movements teachings appeals to western people etc. Highlights are topics like schisms, or the exclusion of of a swami from the organisation, who was a direct disciple of Ramakrishna. Then the many deaths of hartatacks of swamis, even one bombing. Although a scientific book, it reads nearly as easy as a novel. The number of facts Jackson has collected is amasing. Since he knows so much about the movement he can afford to write complitely unemotionally about the topic. Some of the critical statements he has hidden in the notes, probably for not totally offending the swamis. It has to be said, that this is not a spiritual book. The author avoids any spiritual statements. It's after all a history book.
