As a sports-nut kid, I adored this book. It was great sports--and it taught me there's always a way to get it done. What a
treat it is to find out it's been re-released! If you love sports, if you've ever been told you can't do something, if you
like to see the good guys win...READ THIS BOOK!!!
P.S.--the guy who wrote this book won a gold medal in the Olympics, so he really *knows* sports!

Mr. Jackson has produced a classic. With his accurate pen and ink drawings of dozens of the most valuable collecor cars in
the world and with their histories, descriptions, and specifications the book is a must for any avid car buff...His close association
with the Harrah's Car Collection in Reno Nevada with its original ownership of 1200 collector cars and world famous restoration
facilities gives an insight to Bill Harrah's aim to own the greatest cars that still existed.
He enhances the book with his own history of growing up in an isolated Oregon coast Town and with his auto related adventures and mis-adventures with bootleggers and erratic relativews. The book is definitly a keeper.

Bob Jackson was born in Westlake, Oregon, and still lives there on the Oregon Coast, just a few miles from Florence. He is
the author of several books about the area in the 1920s, including HELLS HOLE AND BATTLE BEACH, The Westlake Story. His latest
book is obviously the culmination of years of work, the proof of his lifelong passion for beautiful automobiles, sketching
and writing. The book contains not only amusing recollections of life on the shores of Siltcoos Lake, in a tiny isolated
logging community, but also dozens of on-location drawings of classic cars from the Harrah's Automobile Collection in Spark's
Nevada. This 163 page book will appeal to anyone interested in Oregon history, classic cars, boats and airplanes. As a Bookstore
Owner in Florence, Oregon, I am proud to recommend this high quality, beautifully crafted, book to my customers.

Should be considered a classic of the Civil Rights Era

This is the story of Medgar Evers - one of the lesser known heroes of the Civil Rights Era - and the story of how his family
and the movement managed to continue after Medgar was brutally assassinated in the driveway of his home while his wife and
children were there.
The story is lovely in parts, terrifying in parts, joyous in parts, humbling in parts, and poignant throughout.
Any student of American history should read this book. It's more than the tragic love story of two amazing people; Mrs. Evers's fine writing adroitly details life in the Deep South before the civil rights movement gained widespread recognition and appeal.
I highly, highly recommend it.

I am 38 years old and I read this book when I was 17 years old as a senior in high school. It wasn't a requirement that I
read this book. I simply saw it in the library and was intrigued by the title. Now that I am an adult, I want my children
to read this powerful book. I am also ordering the book today so that I can reread it. There were so many people who participated
in the civil rights movement and it is time we learn about more of those American heros. I could not put this book down.
I read it in two days! Myrlie Evers shares her darkest fears and greatest joy.

Carlton, I know you are on the mailing list for the Torch of Remembrance Mile Hi Salute quarterly newsletter. So you know
that I let over 800 (42 in foreign countries) people (mailing list) know about your book. My plan is to get to know how to
use the Internet because I want to send the quarterly newsletter out on it, under the HMT Rohna Web site. Is there such a
Web site? Please contact me at peach2drew@aol.com if you can help me out on this. Thank you, Carlton for writing history
ignored, the sinking of the HMT Rohna. The goal, for the Torch of Remembrance is to erect a National Memorial Monument in
Denver, Colorado, to honor all the HMT Rohna victims and 236 survivors, of the almost 2,000 soldiers. We are meeting with
Colorado Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell in two weeks to show him the design. He said he wanted to help us. Waiting for
you response. Thanks again..

My dad is a survivor of the sinking of the ROHNA. He never talked about it, I think it was too overwhelming for him, and
now he is attending reunions and talking, but before that all my sisters and I had was Carlton Jackson's book. It gave us
the story he had difficulty telling us. I was overwhelmed and shocked at how lucky he was to be able to swim, and the hell
he went through. He was even scheduled for KP on the day of the hit, so I'm glad he wasn't in the kitchen area. Thank you,
Carlton, for the story, now if more people could find out on A&E or the History Channel before they are all gone, there
are only about 230 men left and they are ages 77-80. Let's go people. These men were heroes! Thank you

Seth Jackson Horne's "Friendship-Fate-Fortune" is an original novel about the role of serendipity in the successful lives
of two friends and business partners, Bob Callaway and Doug Jennings. The history of their relationship and mutual business
growth dovetails with their personal relationship choices and lifemates. All development is expressed through character dialogue,
with a few italicized narrative summaries sprinkled throughout. Variety is the spice of life; perhaps that is a central theme
of "Friendship-Fate-Fortune." One looks forward to more efforts by this painstaking and quite promising new author.

In this fictional novel, lifelong friends, Bob Callaway and Doug Jennings, amass an oil and gas fortune under what some perceived
as very bizarre circumstances. Some people thought they were just plain lucky, while many others believed it was fate that
played a hand in the conditions that led to their wealth. The reality was that one man's tragedy is another man's treasure.
It was a strange set of events that brought Bob, from northwest Louisiana, and Doug from southwest Montana to the same college. Was it their destiny that they should meet the very first day of their freshman year and become roommates?
"Friendship-Fate-Fortune" takes us through Bob and Doug's developing friendship and the tragic events leading to the formation of the multi-million dollar oil and gas company, LIO & SAG, Inc. We will learn that they have personalities that were characterized as resembling sandpaper. There was a smooth or soft side that was relished by many but there was a coarse or harsh side that you didn't want to encounter.
Friendship, Fate, Fortune is a very inspiring novel about the lessons that can be taken from pursuing life with vigor and honesty. It seems the Bob and Doug, the two main characters, gain success and fortune in life by making good decisions and working their butts off. Despite some tragic episodes in both their lifes they become luckier the harder they work. This is a story about devotion to family, friends and co-workers. Doug and Bob are just not satisfied with the ordinary successes people achieve in life, they are compelled to pursue bigger and bigger goals while remaining true to those that mean the most in their lifes. At times I was surprised at my emotional upwelling at certain stages in the novel and can only conclude that I really identified with the heart felt message that was being conveyed. This novel reveals many of the truisms behind why certain people achieve greatness and others do not. A real winner!

Getting intimate with frogs

This is my first acquaintance with the photography of Thomas Marent, so I did not know what to expect really. But more often
than not a picture on the front cover of the book can tell you something about the quality of photography inside. And considering
the low price, I did not really hesitate to buy.
From the very beginning, upon opening the book, I was delighted. The book begins in a very nice way: upon opening the cover and leafing through the frontispiece and title page one does not immediately get to the copyright info and list of contents, but one is treated first with ten pages of gorgeous photographs of frogs with just small captions of their names and places, so that one is immediately pulled into the world of frogs and amphibians before any 'explanation' begins. After the list of contents (listing the foreword and chapters on 'identity', 'body form', 'survival', 'reproduction', 'amphibian families' and index) there is a foreword by the photographer, telling a bit about his motives for making this book (mainly his passion for nature and wildlife in general and frogs especially).
I am delighted by the editing, which is gorgeous: the crisp colour photographs and white typeface are set on black background, with many photos covering the whole page or the total width of two pages. Also, on many pages a few photographs are placed on the same page to compare features, shapes or sizes among different species (or sometimes within the same species, like the different skin hues for day and night on the tree frog Hyla rubracyla). In other occasions, one photo overlaps the whole page and just a bit of the other, leaving space for one or two other photos and some text now and then. Some photos also zoom in on details of the bodies, like heads, eyes, legs, toes or fingers. But most of the photos show the frogs in portrait, from special angles (like the exquisite glass frog being photographed from underneath to show its transparency), perching in typical stances or in action: walking, jumping, 'flying', calling, feeding or mating.
Thomas Marent's art is wonderful. One can see the effort that has gone into taking the best possible shot (sometimes a deliberately posed shot), also taking into acount background. Sometimes a wonderful effect is created with varying depth/sharpness, but always with great style and with purpose behind it. And of course the eyes are always in sharp focus, especially in extreme close-ups. Often, at the same time, the photographer has 'come down' to eye level with the frog, creating a wonderfully 'intimate' view, especially when the frog seems to look at you with sort of a 'puzzled' or 'amazed' look on its face (however impossible that may be, but that is part of the great mastery of the photographer). In my view, this is a great book that is expecially worthwile because of the photographs (how many months of hard work must have gone into creating all of those!!!). And the text, while basic, is very informative. Also, the captions sometimes add a little extra delightful information about the species photographed. A lovely aspect of the text are a few 'anecdotes' (eight if I count correctly) from the adventures of the photographer, making the story behind the photos coming alive, which is wonderful.
All in all this book is a true gem and a delight for all who love high quality nature photography in general and of frogs/amphibians/animals especially. Each and every photo in it is a little work of art and some are simply stunning. Paging through the book, looking at the pictures and reading the bits of wonderfully informative text, really draws one into the world from a frog's perspective (pun intended). Also, this book, just by showing the sheer beauty of frogs, should help to heighten awareness of the many endangered species of amphibians (called "the canaries in the coal mine" because of their high sensitivity to environmental pollution). So when you have the idea that the frogs are looking you in the eye personally when looking at the pictures and when you feel touched, you have made an important step in your awareness I believe: you feel the call of good conscience and respect for nature and wildlife: think what you could do (or do without) to lower your impact on the environment.
Highly recommended.

Dr. Jackson has presented a fresh view of Martin Luther King, Jr. and his place within the civil rights movement. First of
all his picture of King as a searching, evolving activist adds flesh to a complex, often enigmatic historical figure. It
gives him texture, shows him as continuously evolving his ideology. He is never at rest, always seeking, always questioning
himself, always questioning others surrounding him, always growing, right up to the minute of his untimely death. The other
really important aspect of FROM CIVIL RIGHTS TO HUMAN RIGHTS is the view of King removed from the strictly American civil
rights movement. Dr. Jackson places him firmly within the international human rights movement. This speaks to both his growth
as a man and philosopher as well as his growing awareness that American civil rights and human rights worldwide are inextricably
linked. This book makes King believable as both human being and icon.

This is the most important and original book on Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. to be published in years. Jackson offers
a persuasive account that challenges the conventional wisdom about King and his goals. King was not just the apostle of nonviolence.
He was not just someone who wanted everyone to get along. King was a radical--who saw that personal transformation was not
enough. Jackson shows how King saw the black freedom struggle as one of power and economics. This book is beautifully written
and deeply researched. It will be impossible to think about King in the same way ever again after reading Jackson's account.

The ghost of a drowned fisherman rows his boat across the moonpath by night, leaving it waterlogged among the lake weeds by
day... Or was it only imagination that propelled the boat? The four RIchards children and their friend Kenny frighten themselves
nearly out of their wits trying to find the answer to this question. They also have a very good time, as will the reader
who stays with them right through the Chamber of Horrors, featuring a set of pickled tonsils (taken from inside of book)
I may be a bit nostalgic in my rating...

I read this book about 30 years ago. I enjoyed the tale of this group of friends and their storytelling gatherings. I recommended
this to my stepson when he couldn't find something to interest him, (he doesn't like to read), and he truly enjoyed this story
too. Great tale for 4-6 grade readers.

I found the writing warm and sincere, and the suggestions for improving listening skills were practical and valuable.
If more people read this book, the world would be a better place.

Delightful book that gives insight into what it might have been like for a boy to travel and move to Texas back in 1850.
I was able to meet the author and can tell you her enthusiasm for her book is very catching and you can see the love that
she has for each of her characters. I definitely recommend the book to younger children who enjoy true-to-life or historical
adventures.
Definitely a page turner......

This is an excellent book that can easily be considered a classic in its style. The fact that the story is derived from a
true story about a member of the author's family really draws you in and makes you wonder what the next chapter will bring.
This is a real page turner. I hope the author decides to write another book that will tell us more about what happened to
the slave boy. A++++++

However, the love of the game burns brightly within Clint, so he goes to the head of intramural athletics and asks if he can form an intramural team and use the University's old abandoned football stadium. He receives permission and with the help of Shoo-Fly Finnegan, an eccentric but powerful local businessman, he puts the stadium into shape and gets uniforms donated by local businesses. His idea also catches fire at other schools, so Clint's team, now called the Rebels, get to play some games.
At first they get clobbered, but after getting some quality coaching from an injured member of the varsity, they start winning. Since the quality of their game improves and there are physical and academic casualties on the varsity, Clint and his friend Yancy are asked to join the varsity. When the first-string quarterback gets booted out of the game, Clint takes over and leads his team to victory.
While the themes of determination and hard work are the main plot devices of this story, there is another one about the sport of football. Throughout the book, Scholz points out that football is not just about large men pushing each other around and knocking each other down, there is a great deal of strategy and teamwork involved. To play football well, you must think and react fast and every man on the field must handle their assigned tasks. This is an excellent book about many other things besides the sport of football.
