This is one of the best books I have ever read on the topic of how to influence others. It was both practical and easy to read. I have used some of the techniques in both my business and my personal life and they really work. The Convince, Collaborate and Create Influencing method has helped me understand what I need to do in order to influence people in a variety of different situations. However you need to be more effective influencing others-- sales, negotiating, customer service, recruiting or managing your employees this book offers excellent ideas. I was particularly impressed with the chapter dealing with cross cultural influencing. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to advance their career.

If you read only one book this year this should be the one

UP: The Art of Getting What You Want
Lee E. Miller with Barbara Jackson
by Dr. Bonnie Kellen

If there is a golden skill in the era of emotional/social intelligence it is that of influencing/negotiating. If there is one person who can teach it best, it is Lee Miller.
I once heard from a Human Resource director that the biggest problem they see with their employees is that of Emotional Intelligence defined as how to communicate with ones peers, supervisors and teams. Basically, that translates to how do you get your agenda across in everyday life and get a positive response. Influencing is the foundational skill for all situations.
Accordingly most people view the world based on their own points of reference that are derived from their personal experiences. The U Perspective requires you to look at the world differently, through the eyes of others.
His Convince, Collaborate, Create method consists of a three part formula to win others over, one part psychology, one part problem solving and one part structuring your interactions for maximum impact. As Lee Miller says, people do not want you to treat them the way you want to be treated. They want to be treated the way they want to be treated.
The concepts and techniques in this book are well thought out and described in easy to understand dialogue. The book gives readers the opportunity to develop a sophisticated and constructive way of interacting with people in business and in life.
The book is informative and gives much insight. It is definitely not "the same old thing".
I recommend this title as one of the most important books you can read.

Written by experienced businessman and winner of the 2005 Seton Hall University Business School's Award for Teaching Excellence Lee E. Miller with consultant and entrepreneur Barbara Jackson, UP: Influence, Power and the U Perspective - The Art of Getting What You Want is a self-help guide to cultivating one's ability to influence people and build lasting agreements that advance mutual goals. Chapters discuss the "three C's" method of influencing others (Convince, Collaborate and Create), and the importance of understanding others' perspectives. "Since our beliefs and values are developed over time, on a subconscious level, most people simply assume that everyone sees the world the way they do. Even when we recognize that someone else sees a situation differently than we do, our first instinct usually is to try to persuade them to see things our way. The U Perspective takes the opposite approach. Its effectiveness is not rooted in the ability to convince others to change their views or adopt different values. Instead, its power comes from recognizing what others already believe and want and providing solutions based on that information." A top-notch guide, especially ideal for greasing social wheels in business circles but packed cover to cover with tips for more effective negotiation and team-building in personal circles as well.

I picked up this book because I read and loved the author's last book A Woman's Guide to Successful Negotiating. I wasn't disappointed. I started using his U Perspective approach at work and at home. I find I can get more help from my boss and my coworkers. It even works with my kids. All I can say is this book is terrific. You have to read it.

This book provides an excellent overview of the science linking sprawl and public health that will be useful to both public health professionals less familiar with planning and planners less familiar with public health. Dr. Frumkin's message is clear: urban sprawl is having a detrimental impact on many aspects of public health. However, his tone remains objective and hence more useful. Moreover, the references alone make the book a very valuable text for all professionals working in this area.

The Europeans are way ahead of our efforts to consider health issues in the urban planning process. This book provides a history and direction to address urban sprawl and understand well the health implications of reckless or solely market-driven city planning. After all, no built community will have sustainability, if its populations are at risk for chronic and acute illness.

Presented are the ingredients to make our cities safer and livable. This is a must read for City Planners, County officials, and anyone interested in cleaning up our urban communities with an eye toward social equity and environmental justice. MJY

The costs of sprawl are enormous. This book describes the costs in terms of many different types of public health measurements. If you haven 't thought about sprawl, this is a good place to start. It is chilling to think about how many physical, emotional, psychological and medical ramifications there are to the US automobile lifestyle. The price to degradation of the planet was not discussed in depth but that too would make you think about our legacy of our lifestyle to the quality of our planet for future generations. I am encouraged that the topic is being developed. The automobile lifestyle is addictive and to change it will require a paradigm shift. The shift starts with organized discussions and lucidly presented data. This book is excellent on both accounts.

A broad (though not particularly deep) guide to the public health problems associated with sprawl, including: (1) the air pollution caused by sprawl-induced auto traffic, (2) the health consequences of the reduction in walking caused by automobile dependency, (3) injuries and deaths from auto traffic, (4) water quality problems associated with suburban development, (5) the alleged intangible costs of automobile dependency (e.g. driving-induced stress, the isolation of nondrivers). None of these issues are addressed in enormous detail; for example, the book occasionally mentions pro-sprawl counterarguments, but does not fully address them. But then again, each of these topics could probably justify a separate book.

A Fairy-Tale Treasure

Review Date: 2006-05-26
This book could not be more beautifully illustrated. Spirin's art has a wispy, dreamlike delicacy combined with beautifully rendered detail. It looks truly magical. One two-page spread depicts a battle royal between armored cats and an armada of rats sailing in ostrich-egg shells -- it's almost too beautiful and fantastic to take in.

The story itself is a lesser-known fairy tale, filled with heroism, romance, virtue, and wicked villains. My four-year-old fell in love with it immediately, and we have played many games of "white cat" in the last few weeks. The cat queen is lovely, brave, wise, strong -- and exquisitely dressed! What little girl wouldn't be enchanted? Boys will love the high adventure and excitement of the story, complete with wicked dwarfs and fire-breathing salamanders. In every respect, one of the finest fairy-tale picturebooks I've ever seen.

My parents bought me this book when I was about 9 years old at a book fair at school. They even got it signed by the Author. 13 years later, I am now 22 and still love this story.
The Story of the White Cat comes to life as you read it. The artwork is drawn in such fine details that when I go to sleep at night I can still remember all that happens in my dreams. The White Cat her self is filled with magic and mystery that it makes one want to know more about her. If you enjoy reading about enchanted castles and Wise Cats in fantasy then this book is for you.

The experiences that shaped John Carlos are made vivid by the CD Jackson biography titled "Why?" It brought to life the inner struggles he experienced as a young athlete who had to struggle with both racism and a learning disorder. His strength of character and strong beliefs in fairness and justice prevailed over his desire for personal success. This same strength sustained him in his later life when personal tragedy struck him repeatedly. It is a book whose message will not be forgotten.

Why? is the riveting biography of John Carlos, the Black American who in the October 16, 1968 Olympics held in Mexico won the bronze medal for the 200-meter race and then, with Tommy Smith, his Black American teammate who had one the gold medal for the same event, raised on black-gloved fist in silent protest. This engaging and superbly presented biography explores the childhood events that led john to this moment of world-wide attention -- and the serious consequences that followed it. Here is a true-life story of triumph, perseverance, and principle that is highly recommended reading for students of Olympic sports history, black studies, and the fight against racism in all the arenas of life, both on and off the field.

John Carlos' story is candid, blunt and inspirational.

This book sets the record straight on the contributions of one of history's least understood icons. Author C.D. Jackson, Jr. has captured the "story behind the story" of John Carlos, one of the fastest humans in track and field history. The book tells the John Carlos story from his humble beginnings in Harlem, NY to the racism his family endured while running track in 1960's Texas. He chronicles his journey to San Jose, California and his rise to multiple World Records and an Olympic Bronze Medal. You will see a very complex and powerful "thinker" with a mind of his own. He used his "mind" to cripple and destroy his competition.

John's personal tragedies, his "bravado", his athletic rivalries and his bold statements on human rights are merely stepping stones to uncovering John's personal spirit. This book will tell the good, the bad and the controversial "ugly" side of this complex and prolific giant of sport and the struggle for human rights.

His athletic accomplishments go far beyond the Olympic podium of Mexico City in 1968. John Carlos triumphed over the ostracism he and Tommie Smith received in Mexico City, and his own personal battle with dsylexia to set or tie 4 World Records and earn the title of World's Fastest Human in 1969 & 1970. John went on to earn four All-American honors and become NCAA 60yd, 100yd, 220yd and 440yd Relay champion while at San Jose State University.

This book also relates to John's ability to maintain his fighting spirit through the deaths of his father, wife and son.

This book is a must read, you will learn what makes John Carlos "think" like no other man you will ever meet. John Carlos loves people and C.D. Jackson, Jr. captures his most entertaining qualities.

TASTE OF HONEY by Delilah Devlin
1880, West Texas - Honey Cafferty makes her way in this world by selling potions and elixirs from her traveling wagon. She's a bit apprehensive about the newest potion her friend Senora Garza has concocted for her to sell - a male performance enhancer. She's positive she'll be run out of town if the good people become aware of her bawdy product. Garza's suggestion - tell the women what she has, they'll buy!

Sheriff Joe Tanner has heard multiple complaints and discontent from the unmarried men about town since Honey's arrival. It's a nice quiet peaceful town and all of a sudden the normally placid pace has changed. Married couples are starting the day later and single women are in hot pursuit of the town bachelors. It's up to Joe to restore peace to his town but how can he possibly resist the allure of Honey?

Honey's potions aren't posing any threat to Joe's town but just her presence has his libido all off kilter. The only hope to restore life to its normal placid existence is to tell her that it's time she hitched up her wagon and moved onto the next town. Honey's hopes to winter in One Mule are dashed - or are they? Not if the good women of the town have anything to say about it.

Delilah Devlin will have readers laughing out loud at the antics of the town's womenfolk in TASTE OF HONEY. This story is full of characters I found admirable and situations that had me anxiously flipping pages to find out what would happen next and if Honey would truly be run out of town.

QUEEN OF HEARTS by Layla Chase
1880, Mississippi Delta - Gambler Lissa Tate takes great pride in her skills at the poker table and can bluff with the best of them. Her skill doesn't end there. She can also charm any potentially hostile players and walk away with their money without them taking too much offense. When she sees a handsome stranger in the saloon crowd she decides to see if she can entice him to a private game in her room.

Roarke Sheridan has recently become the proud owner of a riverboat which he won during a game of cards. As a gambling man, he finds Lissa's skills at the table intriguing to the say the least, but when she offers to extend their game privately, well he's not about to resist the temptation.

Roarke's visit to the saloon is a much needed break from the demands of being the owner and captain of the QUEEN OF HEARTS riverboat. Like every other man in the room, he's drawn to Lissa and the game. Lissa is a smart player and quits once it becomes apparent that her luck has changed for the worst. She has a previous business commitment starting tomorrow, but tonight she wants to play and Roarke is just too desirable to resist. What will happen when her commitment and Roarke's ownership of a riverboat collide?

Layla Chase presents readers with a thrilling storyline in her story QUEEN OF HEARTS. Lissa and Roarke are both accomplished gamblers who love the thrill of the game. Lissa not only finds love with Roarke but she learns a harsh lesson about gambling which she'd seldom thought about - especially since she's normally the one winning the games.

TOUCH OF MAGIC by Myla Jackson
1872, Abilene, Kansas - Trace Adams has just spent months driving a herd of cattle from Amarillo. At the onset of the cattle drive he'd promised himself to have made up his mind about marrying Martha but he still hasn't reached a decision.

Catarina Novak is facing some tough decisions of her own. Her mentor, Marco Mancini, has passed away due to pneumonia and she'll have to perform their magic act for the first time by herself. She's trying to earn enough to pay the hotel bill and get her assistant, Nora Jane, and herself to Chicago. A spectacular entrance to town would assure them a decent size audience for the show.

To say the Amazing Catarina's entrance into Abeline is nothing short of spectacular would be an understatement. The horse she is riding charges through town until Trace steps in front of it and refused to move. Then Catarina jumps off the horse and sweeps her cape dramatically which spooks the horse who then bolts with Trace still hanging on. Later at the magic show, Trace accuses her of being a fraud. Her response - to put him into a trance and make him howl like a coyote for the audience. It's her other suggestion that brings him to her bed for one night only - but will that be enough?

Myla Jackson brings all the joy and wonder we experienced with magic shows into this fun filled storyline. Catarina and Trace get off to a rocky start but they're soon in a heated embrace which neither of them regrets (even if the details are a bit hazy for Trace). I loved reading each page of this story and wondered if or when Catarina and Trace were going to be honest with each other about him coming to her room to "pleasure her."

WILD, WILD WOMEN OF THE WEST is destined to find it's way to many keeper shelves. Unlike most western stories where the women are waiting for their Prince Charmings and protect their virtue at all costs, these women go after what they want and make no apologies for doing so. Each story is vastly different and brilliantly depicts exciting aspects of the old west with women in unusual occupations. If you enjoy reading about the old west, strong women and hot steamy love scenes then this book is for you. Beautifully written ladies!

Taste of Honey by Delilah Devlin

Honey Cafferty is bonafide wagon driving traveling salesperson. Brewing her own concoctions, she can sell just about anything to anybody. Landing in One-Mule, Texas, Honey sells every bottle she has of her libido improving `medicine' to the women of the town. When the men start complaining to Sheriff Joe Tanner about how the women are acting all sweet and smiling, the sheriff had had enough. Marching to the colorful wagon, Joe figures he will run the money-grabbing prankster out of town. He didn't count on wanting a Taste of Honey.

Queen of Hearts by Layla Chase

Lisse Tayte can't afford to not pay attention to what she is doing. Playing her way to earning a place in a high stakes poker game, she has to pay attention to what she is doing. When the owner of the riverboat comes around, Lisse is more than distracted, she is hot under the collar in the worst way. As the stakes rise, so does their arousal. Who will win the Queen of Hearts?

Touch of Magic by Myla Jackson

Houdini doesn't have anything on the Amazing Catarina! When she captivates a disbelieving cowboy into howling like a wolf, she also sublimely suggests a bit of naughty play in her room as well. When the cowboy catches on, he turns the tables on Catarina and gives her a run for her money. Is their attraction for each other real or is it a Touch of Magic?

I will be the first to say that reading and reviewing anthologies are not my cup of tea. However, I have read nothing like the Wild, Wild Women of the West. I found myself laughing out loud at the antics of Catarina and her cowboy, I steamily fantasized about Lisse's riverboat owner, and I achingly wanted Honey's sheriff. Each story in and of itself was a truly enticing and entertaining read. This anthology was a perfect mix of three talented authors and I thoroughly enjoyed each story. Cowboys and wild women. Who can go wrong reading this? I know I didn't.

This is the "standard introductory textbook" that is also a true joy to read for any layman who wants some accurate information on early India. At the time the book was first published (1954), Professor Basham was teaching at the School of Oriental and African Studies of the University of London.Later he moved to the chair of Asian Civilisation, at the Australian National University, Canberra. His book remains a perennial despite his passing.

This is a classic work on pre-Muslim Indian history. The author's scholarship is evident on every page. While the preface specifically states that the book is intended mainly for a Western audience, South Asians especially should find this book salutary reading--it is an account of their history that is both objective and respectful, a healthy contrast to the unscientific views of history that are often put forth by right-wing politicians in India and Pakistan. The book is a little dated when it talks about the Indus valley civilization.

This Book is Great. Every page of it makes very insightful and intresting reading. It can hardly be bettered in the Subject its dealing with. But, I guess he may not be wholly impartial in his assessments and retains i guess some "Mlechha" attitude. I know the authors reputation and this might appear silly but at a few places he makes some sweeping statements which appear to be made without much proof.

Following are some such sweeping statements.

1. Comparing vedic culture to a culture that bears a generic likeness to that of 'Beowulf' who were semi-barbarians.

2.'and was somehow less advanced than that depicted in the Iliad.

3."BUT IN GENERAL THE MUSLIMS WERE REASONABLY TOLERANT "
Its tough to find any scholar agreeing with this view point. This is almost exclusively of AL BASHAM.

Lot more like this but believe me!.

Bashams scholarship is without peer, he is as comfortable translating tamil as he is in sanskrit, talks about vedic, jain and buddhist ideas with equal flair, passion and clarity.

The book presents ancient India; an idllyic society in an intellectual pursuit unparalled in any society made possible by a liberal and benign social and political environment.

His understanding of philosophy, religion, language and culture (art and prose) is just a pleasure. I am amazed to see the breadth in one person.

His timeline of history and how (only)Indian society has absorbed wave after wave or outsider and make them one in a melting pot is illuminating.

If you are intersted in understading Hindu's(or India); it's a must read, there is nothing as clearly written for an english reader as this.

This first in a series is simply the best of the youth oriented readers I have ever read. This was an easy page turner and I can just see young African American girls curled up in a comfy spot engrossed in these heartwarming stories. Believable situations and reactions from Miss Brown. Loving and dignified family and extended family portrayals. I loved the accurate depiction of African American life, culture, and situations in all the stories, but how these shined through in "The New and Improved Reggie Brown". What little black girl hasn't struggled with the "good hair/bad hair", and true definition of beauty dilemmma on some level. This story captures the essence of those issue with a lovely lesson to boot. Also, as an African American female growing up with two brothers, I can totally relate to the sibling spats and teasing. While I don't fancy myself a book reviewer, I know what I like and Reggie Brown is a hit. Adults who read these will relive their own youth. Girls and boys will be caught up in the rich story telling, positive images, and valuable lessons. Wish this series was around when I was a little girl. I can't wait for the second installment!! Great work, Ms. Jackson.

I think this book is must read for children ages 7 through 13. What the book does is gives Black children (Afircan-Americans) in particular another opportunity to read positive stories about themselves while learning valuable lessons. The book is an uplifting piece because it helps the young reader to not only learn lessons about life on their level, but it also helps them develop positve self images. The reader sees him or herself as a beautiful and valuable person with something to give and something to gain. I reccomend that parents and adults buy the book and give it to a child so they can experience some good literature as well as learn some good values. The book is a very good read for both boys and girls, not just girls. I hope the writer will bring us more full stories in the future about Reggie Brown and hopefully turn Reggie Brown into a series. Reggie is a refreshing character that is full of energy and surprises and I'm sure there are many stories and experiences children would love to read about with Reggie Brown in it. Get the book for a child, but take a peek and read it yourself. I'm sure you will like it, I did.

The Comic Book Checklist and Price Guide published by KP Books and the editors of the Comic Buyers Guide continues to be my comic price guide of choice. The 2007 edition is another 832 pages of prices and information from primarily1961 to the present. A more apt description may be from the beginning of the Silver Age to the present as if covers those DC books such as Showcase # 4 which kicked off what we know today as the Silver Age of Comic books.

There are several things I love about this book. First, it can, if you wish, be used as a checklist. Rather than list comics in a run of issues (for example, Avengers 101 - 110) and listing one price for each issue in that run, this book lists each issue number individually with a check box next to it to check off if you own that issue. Hence the reason that it covers only the silver age to the present, otherwise it would be about 2000 pages instead of 800. I like this idea as a quick reference to one's own personal collection. Second, it lists only the near-mint price for each book with a grading guide to figure out prices for lesser condition books. Anyone who's been collecting comics for any length of time can easily do this right off the top of their heads and I've never found it necessary to list three different prices for comics.

Another thing I like is that the book lists the month and year of each issue. This is a small tool that I think people overlook but that I have found to be very useful. But I think what the Comic Book Chcecklist Price Guide doesn't give you is just as important as what it does give you...namely it doesn't give you hundreds of pages of ads like Overstreet does. It also doesn't give you dozens of pages of stale market reports from dealers whose motives are somewhat dubious in what they report in terms of price information. Rather than rely on this `advisor' information this book has garnered real world data from auction services like eBay to provide what I feel is true pricing, black & white data and that's all I really need...not some dealer in Hoboken claiming to have sold book X for seven billion dollars.

If you want a true price guide without all the vacuous fluff then this is the comic book price guide for you!

Best title in its class!
This Title has a very diverse collection of titles and values good for finding the value of an old unheard of comic. There is normally multiple dollar values for each comic edition and its associated grade on a scale of 1-10. All this book needs is some more guide lines on how to price out comics that are signed and have CGC authentication. They do have general rules for determing CGC (professionally graded comics from a new company) comic values but they seem a little off especially when combined with fractional grades.

I read this after reading a book about a silver mine fire in Idaho. This is more of a historical type book, but it held my interest. The book author did his homework and brought this sad story to life. I recommend it.

As an avid reader of non-fiction books based on historical events, I picked up 47 Down in hopes of learning a bit about my home state and in return I got so much more. Not only does O. Henry Mace give a gripping account of a disaster that affected the lives of many but a concise representation of the background and history of mines in California and across the country. What I appreciated most about the book is the detail the author took into researching the lives of not only the 47 miners and their families, but also the reporters, rescue workers, and the town as a whole. By the time I closed the book I had a clear picture in my mind of what life was like in Jackson, California 1922. I can hardly wait for the next book O. Henry Mace writes!

"47 Down" refers to the number of miners trapped in one of the deepest and most prosperous gold mines in the California foothills, in the year 1922. I bought the book because of a distant relationship to one of the individuals managing the mine, thinking this would be a good way to learn some family history. I was prepared to wade through what I thought would be dry melodrama, but I was gripped from the first pages.

In addition to learning a great deal of interesting information about mining and mines, I was completely captivated by the human story of the trapped miners and the bravery and ingenuity of the rescuers. There is a story line involving the contemporary media which was also interesting in that it points out how little some things have changed. The technology of the media may have evolved, but the competition and frenzy for a good story and headlines has not changed much. This was a terrific book that will interest people who have no idea what mining is all about as well as those who do.

This is my daughter's favorite book and has been since she was 5 or 6 months old. I think she was initially attracted to the pictures, but it probably helps that the adults who read it to her also enjoy the book. The images are luscious and include fun details to notice with your child (the girl's cat is pictured somewhere on every page), and the voice of the story is enchanting.

This book was written by Shirley Jackson whose spooky short story, "The Lottery", you might have had to read in High School.Originally published in 1963, it's back now with beautiful new illustrations filled with color and dreams from the lively imagination of childhood.
What if a magician with stars on his hat suddenly came up to you and gave you 9 wishes? Would you wish to live forever, or for world peace or for something much more wonderful like "a squirrel holding a nut that opens and inside is a Christmas tree." The wishes our lucky girl chooses are delightful and the illustrations of them are pure magic. The ending is the most beautiful part of a very special book. Read this one and find out.
