It's Hunter S. Thompson's classic work. If you're interested in the subject matter or HST then buy this book, read it, put it on the shelf, then pull it back down and reacquaint yourself with it everytime you despair over the lack of original prose in your life. Any investment in any of the works by Dr. Thompson amounts to wise expenditures of those inflated Yankee dollars.

Exploring the Dark Side of the American Dream

Like most people, the only thing I knew about Hunter S. Thompson was that he was the author of "Fear and Loating in Las Vegas" and that mostly because I had seen the movie. I then went on to read the book (a long time ago, in a French translation, since that's my mother tongue) and quite liked it. But even with this background, I wasn't sure what I'd find with this book.

I wasn't disappointed. Quite to the contrary. In fact, this is a most well-written book, well researched, very insightful and thought-provoking. Thompson makes very interesting analyses about the relationship between the actual Hell's Angels and the way they are portrayed throughout the media; that alone is worth the interest. Naturally, you also get to know about the Hell's Angels proper.

I especially like how they fit in historically. To put it in simple terms, here's how it'd be: the world after World War II seems to have no idea where to go anymore, and the mix of wasted energy and confused lives led in an existential vacuum brings about self-destructive behaviour. That doesn't sound quite right, because things are way more complicated than this, but that's a model, so don't take it too literally. The Hell's Angels were started shortly after the end of World War II, and many of them were war veterans who couldn't get back to a normal lifestyle. So I think it's fairly legitimate to put it in such a perspective.

As to the book itself, I definitely love Thompson's style. Not only is he clever and witty, he's also hilarious at times, and moving at others. I never once got bored reading this book: it's a pure reader's delight.

Motorcycles, alcohol, drugs & thugs . . . classic "Gonzo" journalism

I was a young, impressionable 18-year-old high school senior in upstate New York in 1970 when I read Hunter Thompson's first book, "Hell's Angels," and was totally blown away by his first person, in-your-face, stream-of-consciousness "Gonzo" writing style. It was absolutely incredible to me. His unique writing style combined with a fearless attitude toward actually living and riding and learning the truth about this outrageous band of motorcycle outlaws produced an incredible look at the seamier, lawless side of life. And, of course, the alcohol and drugs and high-powered Harleys and thugs and ex-cons who eventually beat the crap out of him also added a real-life luster and dimension that Thompson captured so brilliantly in this amazing classic.

Any ideas supporting an end to the cycle of violence and discrimination in our teen population developed by these authors is a guarantee of a resource that is valuable and effective. The activities, excercises and information presented in this book seek to encourage teachers, parents and counselors of teens and the teens themselves to look into their own experiences and enlighten and expose their own potentially violent and discriminative attitudes. By acknowledging, exploring and identifying their own biases each person becomes a critical thinker capable of reading between the lines of human behavior and political propaganda. The authors explain the cycle of violence as beginning with the oppression and discrimination of people based on race, religion, gender, class, etc. The frustration and hopelessness felt by the oppressed manifests itself in the form of a violent act on the individual him or herself or on another person. By using this perspective the authors demonstrate the importance of not trying to stop violent behavior by encouraging teens to simply act in ways that others deem proper and simultaneously deny and repress true thoughts and feelings. As an educator I strongly recommend this book for you and your students and/or children.

When I first got this book,I wasn't really sure what to expect since it was primarily for ages 9-12. However,I found it to be quite enjoyable with a wonderful lesson to boot:Just because you may look like a geek or nerd, that doesn't necessarily mean that you are one and if people look closer, they'll find that you do have something to offer. I highly recommend this book for anyone of any age-you'll learn what a hero is really all about.

Learning mythology is a critical component of education and this book is a valuable secondary reference
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-02
Although some don't like to admit it, a great many aspects of the Judeo-Christian culture, including religion, have their basis in the myths of the early Greeks. Their principle of superhuman and fickle gods who grant immediate favor or disfavor is clearly apparent in the accounts of the Old Testament. References to entities such as Icarus, Oedipus, Medusa and Midas appear rather regularly in discussions about modern activities. Given this backdrop, a fundamental education in Greek mythology is essential for the modern person. This book can serve as a key cog in that education.
The stories in this collection for young people feature among others Perseus, Theseus, Daedalus, Icarus, Atalanta, Midas, Pygmalion and Galatea. There is little reference to the more powerful Greek gods, which makes it more a secondary reference than a primary one. I strongly recommend this book as a source for the education of middle school students.

Samantha Hunters 4th book in the Hot Wire series is by far the best. It has all the elements of the first three books with a little extra. Sexy Hero and Heroine, good plot and, a little bit of a suspenseful ending. Nathan persues Jennie the way most women only dream about being persued. Jennie gives him quite a good chase. The last few chapters will keep you on the edge of your seat, wondering what is going to happen next. I recommend that you read all four books in the Hot Wire series. They are all very good reads.

I'm a huge Vampire Hunter D fan and this second book didn't disappoint. I love the drawing style and the stories really lend themselves to this format. I can't wait for the next one to be available.

This artist does D such beautiful justice...she captures his cold beauty perfectly while retaining his less than loveable personality. This manga was even better than the first one, it was almost poetic. It's a shame that it could not have followed the novel exactlly, but for the most part I cannot make a complaint against that. I was still very thrilled to be reading it. She did tend to make D a tad bit more emotional that he was in the book, but it worked quite well with the story. The last few pages were flawless...just the thought of them makes me want to cry. Get this manga!

A wonderful look into the nuts and bolts of 1870's safaris

If you are into the nuts and bolts of "How did they do it back then?" then "Hints to Hunters" is an excellent source. It is especially useful due to its relatively early original publication date (1874) and its many illustrations, many more than are usually in similar books of the time. Levenson is indeed opinionated on subjects such as equipment and methods but find me an outdoorsman past or present who isn't. It was also interesting to see how the lads across the Great Pond were doing things in Africa and India while we Yanks were on the Great Plains. This book will show you the similarities and differences. My only real complaint was that at $45 it was a tad pricey. Fortunately, I had an Amazon Certificate.
